I came across this video randomly and I just like it so much. It's simple and gentle in structure (as opposed to videos designed for monetization I suppose). I'm really fortunate today that you chose to make and share this.
For over a $100 it should work better than any snap point knife. It’s obviously heavy with a nasty edgy grip. Thanks for the mention of the Tajima. If I find I must get another one that’s what I’d buy. I have a couple of their chalk lines. I Keep a snap point knife in my tool pouch for when I must cut against a substrate that eats points or when I need to reach deeper than a utility knife. I must own a dozen Stanley 10-499 quick change knives. That’s my edc!
Applying a little molly powder with an acid brush helps too. I didn't mind the cost because i like AvEs channel and it was a good way help support him.
AvE doesn't need any more support. Did you know at one point he was #1 or #2 on Patreon? I've been watching his videos back when he was working on the rock crusher. His tool teardowns were the best. He started some pretty cool projects with us that we never seen again. I know things change and I can't expect creators to pump out the same content week after week in perpetuity. Or really any content at all forever. However, it's been so long for his BOLTRs that we have several new generations of tools and batteries. It'd be cool to see if anything changed in the manufacturing during the pandemic.
I flushed and polished my outer edges too, came out really nice. You can also easily flush the protruding screws too, that's what I did. Finally slightly rounded and polished the corner edges, feels great. Well done and regards.
Great Video, thank you. Great description of how someone who uses these knives often evaluates them. I'm just using it to cut up boxes, and I realize I'm way overpaying, but I don't mind supporting a YT channel that I've enjoyed watching for a long time makes it worthwhile (I have no use for stickers, mugs, etc.)
I just got mine, thanks for the video, maybe he will come out with some upprade parts like blade guides for tightness or a belt clip, thanks again for showing us how to do it, cheers
AvE's production guy could make the blade spacers from thinner materials to tighten things up but then it runs the risk of being too tight if someone uses a thicker blade or gunk gets built up in there.
I was putting mine together the other night and realized it would need some additional work. Kind of sucks to spend $100 doll hairs on something and have to work on it, but I've always enjoyed the channel. So a little DIY fit isn't something I'm not going to be a blowhard about.. Thanks for the video. At least I know which way I need to go with it.
If you have an auto tumbler with appropriate media it will put a perfect finish on the material and save almost all that sanding. I say almost as it will still need fine tuning here & there. Fantastic tool.
I use an olfa HD with the plastic stripped off. I put a piece of reflective tape on it, cos it's very slim and easy to lose. Only downside is that the blade can slide out the back if it's loosened because the stop was on the plastic.
If you use your olfas with the blades extended you should really check out the Knipex one. They have a spine that can be extended to support the blade which makes it way better to use with longer extensions. Nice video. I think I'll pick one up. But there's definitely a bunch of things I wish were done differently. Might try to develop my own 18mm version.
I favor the sinister hand as well, and I like this idea. I may disassemble mine and see if it goes together opposite-wise. That would also give me a chance to do some more sanding. She's still a little rough round the perimeter.
As a laser operator I see things about how this kit was cut that kinda grate against my standards. The cut lead-ins (little divots on the side of the parts) should have been on an inside facing edge or the end of the part and the bridges on the two spacers could have been much thinner for easier cleanup. Speaking of clean up, the operator could have gave the parts a gentle wipe when the slag was hot and it mostly would have brushed off, or refine the cut to reduce how much is produced in the first place. Whining aside, you've done a great job cleaning it up and I love the idea of the knife but these small changes wouldn't have cost any production time to result in a better finished product.
Great and patient job on the sanding. I was a little impatient on mine. I may disassemble and do some more edge cleaning, plus see if it can be assembled left handed, as someone else commented below.
My dumbass spent hours and hours hand finishing my knife in prep for cerakote. Got it finished really nicely, had my boss coat the knife and then my blades showed up from Amazon. I didn’t assemble the knife with the blades in it and ended up completely misaligning the scales to get the blade to fit 🤦🏻♂️ I would definitely suggest assembly with the blade in the knife. It’ll help tons getting the alignment perfect
Graphic illustration of "the other part of the machine shop" that is rarely talked about-Deburring! It's often done by hand and is absolutely necessary to get the fit and finish that is expected of machine parts and assemblies.
Did you buy one? Have you held one? 😂 It feels better in the hand than my $35 snap-on. If only I could find 25mm blades. Every store in town has 9mm and 18mm and that's it😢
@@leftyeh6495 I know overbuilt when I see it, for the price and actual use, it's not worth it. Exotic blades, I'll stick to the olfa I've had since I was 14

Is it the best knife, no. Is it cool as hell, yes. does it make sense, no. But, for all the laughs and education ive received from watching Ave's channel, i bought one immediately. Also, took me about 10 minutes to assemble. Make cool shit and put it on tinternet.
I like Ave. I like his videos, reviews, teardowns, and his whole concept in general, so I bought this. That's a fun knife but for thoes who don't want to spend that much and want a ridiculous heavy sturdy 25mm snap knife look into tajima acm-700c even on board blade storage. Something a little lighter yet still stupid strong tajima ac-700s and it comes in many styles of locks and colors. 👍

Honestly I haven’t been using it as my everyday knife lately. I’ve gone back to my red Tajima that I show in the video. It’s comfier in the hand, there’s less play in the blade and moving the blade in and out is easier.

Yeah, kinda backwards. If it's going to require so much finishing work, and is essentially a starting point kit, it's supposed to be cheaper than a ready to go product. Great clip. Thank you. Would the outside layered edges turn out better if the bulk of the edge sanding was done after assembly? I will try that.
So cool, a lot of these knives have an Olfal design.

Mine (18mm) had laser spatter that made it tight. Sanding helped a lot.
When can I buy one at Cambodian Tire?
