10 for sure! That's a really nice new blade. Illegal to carry where I live in the US, but not to purchase. I carried one all thru high school anyway, lol. Only got caught once by my shop teacher. He plucked it out of my back pocket, opened it like a pro, checked the blade, closed it and handed it back. All he said is " don't stab anyone." I loved the 80's.
In my school in the 1990s, a kid grabbed a scissors from the teacher's desk and marched toward another kid. There was no incident, but the point is, are we going to make scissors illegal now too?
At my highschool there was a longhaired kid in a metallica tshirt who used to sell them. A lot of us bought them from him and carried them. Back in early 00s.
10/10 restoration! Beautiful work. I had a butterfly knife in my teens but they were outlawed in the late 70s, along with switchblades. My dad made me take it apart and helped me turn it into a fixed blade knife. Cut and slotted a wood handle, peened the pins in place and I made a custom fit sheath for it.
Thank you for calling it a Balisong! As a person in the Philippines, people in Batangas have said that the origin of these knives came from them waaay back then. And it also sounds cooler than butterfly knives 💪🔥🇵🇭
The first one I owned was purchased in a pawn shop. It had horn handles. I knew a guy whose wife was Filipino. I was blown away by her skill with that blade. I've been a fan ever since. This has got to be some of your finest work !
10/10 restoration, only criticism I have is that when reassembling the handles and blade together, you put the latch handle as the "safe" handle for flipping the knife, it's supposed to be on the "bite" handle of the knife. Quick explanation for people who don't know much about butterfly knives and its flipping techniques, the bite handle as inferred by the name is the handle that the blade faces when closing, meaning if you are holding that blade and flipping it, your chances of being bit by the knife increases. The safe handle is self explanatory since it's the opposite of the bite handle. The latch goes on the bite handle both for comfort, practicality, and because of some tricks involving the latch. Your work on restoring the parts is amazing 10/10, just the reassembly I'd say is just because you probably didn't know that much about the knife, I assume that is the reason since anyone I've met who loves butterfly knives immediately starts flipping it when its in their hands.
10 out 10! I really liked the handle design. Many of us had butterfly knives when I was in high school back in the 80's but they were cheaply made with plastic handle grips and weak hinge pins.
@@Facetiously.Esoteric I am an auto technician by trade my 10/10 is based on presented condition at start of a job in this case rusted/damaged/worn versus finished condition which would be form/fit/function. So as for Form the only replaced part was the blade and it matches the form of the original and in my opinion the new blade looks better than the old one. As for fit the new blade and rivets are the only 100% new parts (to the original knife assembly) and even though the end of the blade is shaped slightly different it fits in very well with the original parts . And finally functionality. The moving parts work as intended (from what I can see as presented) There does not appear to be excess looseness in the repaired item as it opens and closes smoothly as for the blade I do not know the intended end use of this knife my guess would be most likely be display piece with occasional use as a letter opener and perhaps to cut tape to open a package which this knife will certainly be able to handle those tasks with ease. At the end of the day I'm not a metallurgist nor an expert in forging techniques so my 10/10 is based on my criteria as to what I would use this particular knife for and for what I stated above it would work great as a display piece/letter opener. :TLDR: - My criteria for 10/10 will differ from others criteria for 10/10.
@@MrKroogur I actually agree with you on everything as you present it now. He did a beautiful job on everything else. I think that's why the sloppy tempering annoyed me so much. He was meticulous with the rest of the build. Even the detail of the blade was perfect. Until he half quenched it. Well, the lock was poorly done as well. But that's only an issue if it's an actual working piece.
This is not a restoration -- it is an upgrade. I really liked the new blade profile and consider the resurfacing of the frame handles to be a refinement to what started out as a good-but-not-great build. But now it is finally finished. Nice work to whoever started the build and a pleasure to see this finishing work.

Nice job. Rate it at a 9.3! I always told my troops there’s always room for improvement! You definitely put time into it. I like when someone puts pride into their work. Great job from the state of Florida, USA!
I always called it Balisong. I used to collect these knives back when I lived in Poland. I think the term Butterfly became more popular just recently, because I remember everyone referring to it as a Balisong knife. I also think that Balisong sounds more badass. 😁
You didn't install a kicker. The edge is going to contact the handles and eventually dull the part that smacks together. The kicker is basically a little nub that extends past the edge of the blade and makes sure there's space between the edge and handle. Look at the benchmade 42 for example.
I've heard about this style many times and have seen them in movies but never in real life, as far as your restoration goes, I would to give a 12 out of 10 it's beautiful.
You my friend are one patient and determined man! Nice restoration! 10/10!!! I still have my first Butterfly knife that was gifted to me back in the late 80’s.
Don't you think the restauration destroyed the argument for having it as an antique peace from the grandparents 😅plus it also lost like the nastynes of the whole thing ..😂😂😂🎭
@ if it was in a display case on a wall you might get away with owning it but if you got court out with it you’d get ten years no matter how old it was it’s still a lethal weapon
