  • Today's tutorial focuses on how to fly the Spitfire in War Thunder Simulator battles. Now this is not a specific guide on the Spitfire in terms of its guns, combat tactics etc. This guide is meant to give you a broad understanding on how to handle the Spitfire and fly it appropriately as many people struggle with its in-game flight model.
This video also includes a brief explanation on wing-stalls and flatspins, and offers some tips to help you get out of a flatspin should you find yourself in that particular situation!

I got my head tracking working today for the first time, I wanted to go into SIM but the only worthy battle was for me to be British and try and fly a Spitfire, OMFG, what is this? (and with the new to headtracker!) Is this how Spitfire's really handled? Seriously? Yeh a dedicated control setup, the model for the Spitfire is sooooo mad.....well said, great video, really want to 'fly' this amazing plane!

@@ZaYn.91 Yep, we do. One thing is not mentioned here, and that is how taxing flying the Spit in WT is. I can fly a 109 for entire EC, or even better - a 190. The butcher bird is almost as comfy as a P-38. On Spit ? There is quite a bit of strain on the pilot, you need to do everything properly. Keeping your turns coordinated, trim, manage engine, temps etc. Basically you fight your own kite as much as the enemy. An hour of flying like this, and I am usually ready to throw the towel.
The performance is great, but so is the cost.

@@hespheus2255 I've been flying the spits a lot for about 3 months. Probably at least 200 hrs. I can easily be glued to the rear of a 109, except maybe if it dives away. At the same speed and turning rate as a 109, there's a pretty good clearance to the spitfires turn limit, can still comfortably turn more to delete the 109 with hispanos.
Pretty sure the roll rate of the spitfire using the rudder is better than the 109 also using its rudder.
Only real option for a 109 is to just dive and extend away.

The Spitfires in my old Combat Flight Simulator exhibit the same stall characteristics as you demonstrated here. As you pointed out, with gentle inputs on the elevator, good rudder coordination and enough speed the Spit will sail through turns. Also, its low wing loading means you don't have to bank as steeply as other aircraft to get a good turn rate.

There’s always been a problem trying to simulate big control sticks with feet of travel and dozens of pounds of force with our plastic joysticks and springs without becoming unstable as hell. Planes that were in a reality joyous to fly because of easy responsiveness become nightmares of nose bounce. The BEST answer I’ve tried is good Force Feedback, I wish War Thunder would get on fixing their support for that.

Love flying the Spits, the rudder is so good for snap rolls.
I take them out in ground sim a lot, just shred through enemy fighters then dive bombing a tank with 250lb or 500lb bombs. Gotten pretty accurate with the bombs, but pulling out of a dive can sometimes rip the wings.

Well a year later this video has popped up on my feed and since then I’ve managed to master vr graphics in war thunder and also the ability to fly a spitfire competently. This is a very good video for anyone attempting to fly this plane. I have found i just have to coax it in the direction I want to turn with a little touch of rudder , aileron and elevator and it just whizzes around like it’s on rails. I even set the pitch multiplier to .08 as I never need to use full deflection, and doing so will put you in the situation expertly detailed in this video.

When I started war thunder in the stone ages the spit flew like a dream - super comfortable - then some years ago they totally changed the FM to become almost unflyable, a year ago or something they tweaked it making it manageable - more like it was irl I guess. I like personality of planes - that they have their own issues to learn and your video certainly do make me wanna take it out for a spin ^^ again. I've had SOME fun with it the last year, you don't HAVE to make a special setting for it in my opinion... - still... I can't forget how smooth and easy it once was - back in the stone age.

The D.373 would like to talk with you. It literally spins itself into death because of that giant radial engine, and it's a reserve, so it's many people's first sim fighter, including mine. However, it has a tendency to flatspin whenever you use the rudder any little tiny bit, so avoid the A and D keys like the plague while flying that plane because it'll stall out and crash. Even worse, it has a strong prop wash and simply likes to crash whenever it feels like it, especially on takeoff or during high power settings, and thanks to its spindly undercarriage, it's about as easy to land as the Space Shuttle.
All of that in a reserve fighter that could be your first sim plane...nice.
(However, if you do manage to get past these shortcomings, it's fantastic. 4 decent MGs and high top-speed for a 1.0 plane).

On the other end of the spectrum, some plants inexplicably can’t pull into the accelerated stall under many flight conditions. For instance, P-51s can’t get any benefit out of their maneuvering flaps because they just can’t pull to stall AoA below corner speed with flaps deployed, which is precisely when you might want to pop flaps.

Another thing you can do is when you *do* have her in a nice and stable configuration and all you're trying to do is change pitch is throttle down or up a little respectively. She'll change her pitch a bit just by doing that. This is true for most aircraft btw, but it's not viable for a lot of combat applications, so bear that in mind.

I’ve gone over to DCS and bought the MkIX. It’s great being able to actually do a full preflight check and startup just like it’s done in the real world with a fully clickable cockpit , and with a reverb G2 it is amazing. War Thunder in VR seems to be a lot more fuzzy compared with IL2 and DCS. I struggle to spot anything on the ground at all...and planes can’t be IDd till they are virtually on top of you.

I’m using a joystick and it’s damn near impossible to dogfight or hit ground targets right now, but I’m pretty good at bombing and getting better at dog fighting.. I feel like I’m doing something way wrong either with controlling or getting those specific pitch roll yaw settings right (dead zone, non-lin, etc). What are you setting numbers for your german fighters? Right now I’m in the 3-4.5 rank aircraft

The problem with the spitfire is that the joystick sensitivity settings for it as to numb for use in other planes like the Mossie, the Hawkers and the settings that maximize the maneuverability of the Mossie and Hawkers result in the spitfire flailing about as every small control input leads to massive nose movements.
The only way around this is to create a setting for the Spitfires and a second one or everything else.
At this point I've given up flying the Spit unless it's the only plane I'm flying that day.

You are quite correct: The Spitfire in real life would not turn well below about 220 mph... It made a fast but much wider circle than most other types, maintaining a high turn rate of 20-22 seconds, but on a poor radius: Its trick was it could stall itself to briefly point at a smaller 109 or 190 circle, but this was a poor crutch at best, since the guns had a 1% hit rate... Kudos for getting this right... Much less well known is that the FW-190A was the probably the purest slow speed turn fighter of the entire War: It literally did nothing else well (what sea of nonsense Eric Brown said about this notwithstanding): It was the purest turn fighter this side of the Ki-43 Oscar, with possibly the worst high-speed handling of all WWII fighters. Russian Red Fleet evaluation said: "It will inevitably offer turning combat at a minimum speed." while Clostermann, who shot down 10 of them, said the notion that the Spitfire out-turns the FW-190A at low speeds below 220 mph (the Spitfire did vastly out-turn it at higher speeds) was "a good joke: Few who tried it came back to complain about the Spitfire legend." Johnnie Johnson himself, with 20 FW-190A kills said (top Allied scorer on the 190): "The Spitfire would be out turned by the FW-190A: In multiple consecutive circles, it was only a matter of time." Turning at low speed was the most important attribute of a WWII fighter, because it "locked the target in" (usually poorly replicated in games), and also easily broke high speed diving attacks, while giving the guns a lot of time for the 1% hit rate to take effect: See more on this on my channel: ua-cam.com/video/uYnCI3XURx0/v-deo.html, or: ua-cam.com/video/S31ZtXFHFFQ/v-deo.html

Hey, it's me again. Unlocked a few of a Spits, gave them a whirl. The thing that my slip readout in WTRTI made very clear is that the problem is the Spit yawing HARD right when you pull G in the thing which must be ruddered out or you're asking for a spin, like a freakin' Sopwith Camel. I've never heard of such a trait for Spitfire and it seems unlikely since there is not 300+ pounds of rotary engine up there spinning on the front of a Spitty.

I have been flying Spitfires for years in WT, both the low and high tier ones. The point he mentioned about horizontal turning and not turning at low speeds are in my humble opinion, incorrect. The thing is, a competent Spitfire pilot knows what TeaRex pointed out: You don't need maximum joystick inputs (Basically, at 100% input), rather... Keep the inputs around 75 to 80%, and a Spit will outperform a 109. Even at low speeds. A Zero is always a worthy opponent, but in that case your Spitfire has something the Zero lacks: Serious power. It's a LOT quicker than a Zero. (tier for tier.)

Progress with Brit tree in sim:
The Spit LF IX seems to be the most stable so far, and is baaaaaaaadass. The Spit XVI otoh is such a basketcase that even with two decades of sim experience and joystick curves I can’t make it go straight.
No other single engine plane I’ve tested yaws with application of G so much like it has huge gyroscopic effect, not 109s not Italian jobs nor Tempest/Typhoon. Simply bizarre.

well all my sensitivity is at 0. my only problem is im pitching too much on my joystick which i dont think it should be. since i normally pitch up and down too much on the joystick and always does an accidentally and uncontrollably role to the left and to the right i just adjust the multiplier to limit the pitch of the airplane but not on the joystick.

So a faster turn can be also tighter becuase you're not using full elevator deflection? Do you know if Yaks also turn tighter with more speed? (it's the only planes I use :P)

    • @TeaRexChannel

Faster turn is never going to be tighter than a slower turn at full deflection, however the Spitfire is un-matched in these faster turns. So if you can, keep your dogfights fast!

Idk if they've been fixed but the Sim flight models for the Spitfires in WT were fundamentally wrong when I last tried them. IRL the Spitfire had a neutral static stability in pitch (literally the opposite of what's displayed in this video; when you point the nose in any which direction it remains more or less where pointed when the stick is centred) and was extremely intuitive to fly. It's just blatantly falsely modelled. Fly any of the IL-2s or DCS for a much, MUCH better representation.

My issue with Gaijin's man-made flat spins is, not being able to come out of the flat spin. Pilot training includes deliberately going into a spin and how to get out of them. This is all part of what a pilot has to go through to get his pilots license. However, with Gaijin, once you go into a flat spin it is virtually impossible to come out of that flat spin. This is what pisses me off. Imagine if a person training a pilot wanabe to come out of a spin, and never being able to come out of that spin, there would be no pilots as all would be killed in training. Gaijin's treatment of the Spitfire is not based on fact and science, it is based solely on kissing ass of all those who use to complain about the Spitfire kicking their ass. That is when Gaijin decided to completely mess up the flight model as putting useless guns and ammo on them was not enough to stop all the crying and complaining in the forums by snowflakes. This is my complaint about the Spitfire. That its flight model was delibert and its guns and ammo were all deliberate by Gaijin.

You can absolutely come out of a flatspin in War Thunder (as was shown in this video). It's not a complex process and works almost every time so long as you have the altitude.

    • @darbray7948
      @darbray7948 3 роки тому

The spitfires are very good when you get used to its flight model, its just more sensitive than other planes.
What do you mean by it can't come out of flat spins, it shows how to come out of them in the video and the spitfires are the planes than come come out of a flat spin relativity quickly and easily compared to other planes.
Also Air targets on hispanos have HEF-SAPI which are bugged and don't work. Best belts are Stealth, and Default for a belt with tracers. Both Stealth and Default have 50% HEF which you want. Stealth will quickly delete any fighter it touches
