War Thunder Sim - Top 10 tips for beginners! | Sim guide #4

- Welcome to the fourth installment in my War Thunder Sim Tutorial series! Today we are looking at my top 10 tips for new players.
People always ask me what tips I have for sim newbies, and instead of giving the obvious answers I took some time to sit down and have a proper think on the matter - and this is what I came up with.
Introduction - 00:00
Tip 1 - Set up trimming 0:36
Aircraft trimming in war thunder is vital to getting the most out of your aircraft, especially the more twitchy ones like the Spitfire. Trimming will keep your aircraft stable, improve your accuracy and flight performance - not to mention reduce the chance of an embarrassing flatspin!
Tip 2 - Gun convergence 3:00
This can vary based on personal taste. But I set up my gun convergence to between 300m and 500m depending on my aircraft. Any further out seems excessive for me, unless I am flying a high tier jet. Usually my dogfights are settled at ranges below 400m, so that is where I want the highest accuracy.
Tip 3 - Maintain situational awareness 4:52
'Check your six' is an expression for a reason. An unaware pilot is a dead pilot! Keep an eye on the sky and make sure your'e aware of any potential threats. A keen sense of awareness will improve your performance, and also allow you to keep an extra eye out for your wingmates too!
Tip 4 - Keep your altitude 5:53
Altitude = energy. Having the energy advantage means you get to decide how, when or even if you re going to engage your opponent. You will be able to spot incoming threats or opportunities with far greater ease from fifteen thousand feet than you would at fifteen hundred feet.
Tip 5 - Look after your aircraft, know when to retreat 7:19
If you take critical damage to your engine or cooling system it will fail eventually. Your aim should always be to preserve your aircraft and thus deny a kill to your opponent; also you will only get the full silver lion reward for your flyout if you manage to successfully land the plane back at your airfield, this applies for both bombing bases or getting ground and air kills.
Tip 6 - Use your radio messages 8:34
Radio messages are a key part of communication in simulator battles, use them. At a bare minimum you should use the following.
“Follow me” - Most pilots use this to mark their position on the map. It can also be used when you are chasing an unidentified aircraft. More often than not, if its a friendly, they will see your ping on the map right behind them and also signal their position so that you know not to shoot them down.
“Cover me” - Speaks for itself, its calling for help. It also marks your position and altitude for your allies to see.
“Returning to the base” - Lets your allies know that you are heading back to base, and cannot be relied on for immediate assistance.
“Thank you” - Manners are important, if somebody has just saved your ass its only common courtesy to say thanks!
Tip 7 - Utilise the replay system 9:35
When I was still new to sim, I spent a lot of time looking over the replays, especially when I was flying in a match where some of War Thunder's top sim pilots made an appearance. Watching how they fly was a goldmine of information for me and I learned a lot from watching them.
Tip 8 - Find others to fly with 10:55
War Thunder is a multiplayer game, so find some fellow pilots to fly out with! Its a lot more fun flying in a team, and it will improve your effectiveness and secure more victories. Not only that, but if you find yourself flying with a more experience pilot, be sure to learn from them to improve your own development.
Tip 9 - Have a varied lineup 12:12
Certain aircraft will have a spawn point cost, and if you die in that aircraft you also then need to wait a certain amount of time before the game allows you to spawn in again. Do NOT bring a heap of aircraft sitting at the same battle rating (unless it is the minimum which has no spawn cost) otherwise most of your lineup will be locked out if you lose that aircraft, and if its a top tier vehicle you will face a 30 minute respawn wait.
Tip 10 - HAVE FUN! 13:48

Hey, about trim and replays, im ps4 player, i dont have enought buttons in the controller
question: is a team in sim battles, always a team of nation, which were allies in real life. I mean if the one team is only an axis power and the other only allies. Or is it mixed, which means german planes teaming with american planes
@@wolfsedo1576 idk, its supposed to be realistic so
"set up the trim"

hm, interesting
Or fly the f4u-1D you fly mostly straight
I had to use the trim, because I was fling with aswdqe keys until I got a joystick XD.
@@commonnerfer any french / Italian twin or for engines planes fly straight with no trim (or any plane with 2 engines that spin in opposite direction). That is soooo satisfying
@@ahouais5620There's also planes with 2 inline contra-rotating props, like the V.B.10-02 or Wyvern
Just a few days ago I played the b57b with a talisman and a premium account in two simulator air battles and made well over 400k rp
Whatttt? U can get that much rp?
@@johanneskirestos5316 not anymore
Too bad. Im in bankrupsy rn. The repair cost is killing me
@@johanneskirestos5316 I was gonna say, sadly this is no longer possible because apparently Gaijin thought the grind was too easy. I haven’t played sim since the ridiculous nerf to the earnings in sim
I did on the plus side research several vehicles before the nerf resulting in me having all top tier keys researched although I still have to grind for the sl eventually
Just realized that there's a control for trimming, i played my first sim battles a couple days ago and i didn't know much about it (i played it in the fw-190 with a mouse without the trim settings and only got 1 kill until i got spanked by a yak-3) so thanks for the tips
Thank you for doing this, i always want to start with Sim but i give up cause it is so overwhelming, this video's want me to get back at it.
Definitely give it another go! Sim is always a bit intimidating at first, but it's relatively easy to adjust to :)
It’s the same for me xD, I always thought it seemed cool, and I even bought a joystick to try it xD. I ran into problems with flying with it though because I need to move my camera around with my mouse and at the same time I need to control the plane with my joystick, since I’m right handed I bought a right handed joystick so that’s a bit of an issue lmao
@@Blizzard_the_Pilot_Wannabee oculus rift cv1's are going pretty cheap on Ebay. Just try to buy the later ones that come with touch controllers. The awareness alone upped my game considerably.

I keep my convergence at 800. Used to have it at 400, then 600 for a while. Decided to just put it at max and see how it is. My aim improved dramatically. I usually fire between 500-800m anyway, rarely closer, so it works perfectly for me. I might not get many pilot snipes but I always hit something at least and it usually brings them down if they aren't a bomber.
Great to see stuff like this. Keep up the great work!

@@WingalingDragon how do I join
"You'll find the vast majority of us are very open and friendly"... True, but my mind immediately went to the few SB players I know to be totally toxic and total dicks haha. Not naming names but you'll learn to recognize quickly if you play sim for any extended period haha.
Good content. Hope it gets many many many views, cause more sim players who know what they're doing is always good.
Totally agree with most of these! (only thing is I don't bother to trim fixate but that's just me) and having fun is so key especially after a grindy Op like Op Suffer. First thing I did after getting the F-11 wasn't to take it out (I actually still haven't)... I went and got into a Tempest Vickers and went Zero hunting with the 47mms. Put a huge grin on my face whenever it worked and no hard feelings when it didn't.
(If you see me in a match and need help holler -- CML TigrisJK)
Thank you very much!
The Tempest Vickers is also one of my favorite aircraft to fly - its an absolute meme machine in the right hands ;P
I got into sim maybe 2 months ago and I just got my first 3 kills that dose not use a tail gunner. I fond out using test flight missions I’m able to practise my dogfighting skills. The plane I managed to gat a kill was the fury mk 1
Grats! I am impressed it was in the Fury! Biplanes are hard to see out of!
Nice work! Biplanes are some of the trickiest to master, so well done indeed!
@@TeaRexChannel what would you say is easy to master? I'm new to this and the easiest craft I've tried so far has been the Hurricane 1/Late and the Venom FB4
@@benfennell6842 Hurricane is the easiest to master. I also think the P40E and Bf109-E1 are quite newbie friendly in terms of props.
For early jets the P80 and Meteors were the easiest for me but that's my opinion.
@@TeaRexChannel thank you❤
I agree on all but one, flying at altitude like you said at around 1000m. I learnt some hard lessons about that more so getting jumped from below. One place you can't check easily is underneath. So my thing is fly super low at very high speed and you'll see ever plane and be able to sneak up on there 6 from below. If you miss time it head for the ground and repeat.
I find that most can't fly in between trees and usually they hit the ground, not always but most.
See you in the skys MAXrpm.
Situational awareness is key, sure, but if something is below me it's cause I intentionally made it that way. Flying low even fast gets you killed, unless your "high" target isn't all that high.
That said certain planes do perform better low and fast.
Ah yes, perhaps I explained it poorly in the video. I only use 1000m for trim settings, usually I fly a lot higher - between 3000 and 5000 meters depending on my aircraft.
Totally depends on the plane though, right? I wouldn't recommend what you're saying to do in a P-47 for instance, since that thing is terrible down low, has trouble climbing AND it's greatest asset is it's ability to dive away from any baddies trying to kill you.
@@Birdy890 Yep i agree the plane is critical. What i find when your low and the attacker is following there's a very high probability that his so focused on you that he slams into the ground.
you should be tipping your wings to look for targets below. it becomes as natural as a peek behind
in my experience the easiest plane to first fly in sim was the corsair, specifically the f4u-7. every other plane i would pull to hard and flat spin while the corsair just accepts the 8g im tugging it around with
Fw190-A4 was a really easy starter plane for me because it could do those maneuvers easily due to its energy retention and the 4 20s allowed you to make no more than 2 passes on an enemy if done right
Yeah I was able to do ver well in the corsair compared to other planes. Although the spit turns nicely and often wins me engagements.
I think heavier fighters in general are more forgiving, I mostly fly the P 47 in sim because it never flat spins for me
@@braedynhoward3644Yeah, spitfires good, but with just raw input, it feels like it's on ice skates. I configure my pitch controls so I can pull up all the way with no trouble, but even then, it's still a little squirrelly.
Exactly what I need. I'm no pushover in RB, but I started playing sim a couple of weeks ago and can't go back! Completely hooked, maybe in a masochistic kind of way. Started from watching how to setup a mouse-joystick to dishing out my old force feedback joystick then escalating to a new FFB joystick and pedals. Still learning the ropes right now, so tips like these are really handy!
Glad the tips helped, and welcome to sim!
@@TeaRexChannel thanks! And thanks to videos like yours, I am now starting to make positive K/D in sim. Its working!
👍🏽 Very well done and packed with good info. Tip # 6, glad someone mentioned that one. Love that someone is doing this kind of work for sim. Cheers and o7.
Glad to hear people are liking what I do! o7
Thank you very much for the series, I've learnt a few things, even if I mainly stick to playing EC 6 many of the mainly prop based tips did help me learn how to apply it to the jets

good vid mate, well done,
Haha, thank ye kind sir!
amazing video dude, you just save my life with all of your tutorials !!!
Good grief! Didn't know about the trim settings. Very new to the game, had about a dozen Sim battles and gave up Sims. First 2 games I didn't even know i had to start the engine - yea too eager to jump in and play something. So true about the awareness part, I mostly died to "phantom" enemies. Neve knew where they came from. Good tips.
Even though I play arcade mostly , this video was still very informative and enjoyable . Subbed
Love any content on how to improve in sim. Keep it up!
Thank you - I shall! :)
@TeaRex I have noticed for your gun convergence you have "Vertical Targeting" enabled. I have heard that having it enabled doesn't effect the convergence of where the shells will "come together" as you might say. I have been told when it is enabled it effects the Y-Axis of the guns. So in this case your guns are set to fire 300 metres above the wing. Now the shells do in fact come together at some point in time, just is. But having "Vertical Targeting" enabled it might help with getting shots on target for when trying to get a deflection shot. But when you ever manage to sneak up on someone from behind the shells could go over the enemy's wings just giving away your position. So having it turned off will give you the option to set the distance in which the bullets "come together". So, In my opinion having Vertical Targeting off will improve your performance because you don't have to correlate the Y-Axis when shooting, where otherwise you can just fire the rounds and watch the pretty flame erupt. But, also it is up to the pilot to set the distance in which the shells "come together" cause to them they might like staying farther back and getting the kill, while others might enjoy roasting marshmallows when downing the enemy. But, otherwise great video and great advice!
Ah yes you are indeed correct. I change between vertical targeting depending on what aircraft I fly as I have noticed the issues with shells flying "over" their target!
@@TeaRexChannel the biggest issue with vertical targeting, atleast in aracde and RB, more so JET sim not prop is if you're sideways, it still "Vertical Targets" but now instead of offstetting bullet drop it just makes the show shoot to the side and down with the bullet drop, (90 degrees bank to the left, it shoots further left and down, 90 degree bank to the right is likewise further to the right and down of the target, upside down and suddenly the vertical targetting is ADDING to the bullet drop) so it creates another factor of compensation unless you're perfectly level.
and talking about jet, higher tier jets, ESPECIALLY RADAR means fly LOW or ORBITAL not "High" or Medium altitude. you do NOT want to make yourself a easy radar target
edit: okay i just noticed its a 3 year old video my apologies xD, vertical targeting part is still true though!
Thank you! Excellent tips !!!
This will help a lot. The spitfire is a pain to fly, especially aiming, but it will be well worth it when I am good at it
These are good tips I will treat. Thank you
Yes!!! This video was perfectly put together and I thank you and have liked and subscribed. I'm an avid aviation lover and have been itching to get into War Thunder for some time now but never went out and spent what I probably needed to to ease my transition into flight sims. Thanks for the tips, just started yesterday on console, man I wish I had either VR or track IR :)
Hi Rex. First of all, you’re doing great videos and they always fun to watch. Second i’m about to start playing sims with xbox pad, could you give few examples of planes easy to learn to fly in sims? (I have almost all prop and majority of jet planes). Best regards!
Hey hey! Thanks for the kind words :)
Some good planes for beginners (at least for me and some friends when we were new) are as follows.
Bf109 E series. P40E. Hurricane Mk1L. Bf110C. Yak2-Kabb. Any of the Yak3s. A6M2.
There are honestly a lot more, but those ones tend to be pretty forgiving.
For controller players I use my left stick as throttle and rudder right stick for elevator and alieron just like an rc plane then use a d pad button to disable the throttle /rudder and enable freelook then put it on left stick. I also save buttons by doing things like pressing rb then triangle for gear, rb and ○ for flaps l, rb and □ for airbrakes so they are usable but not on my immediate buttons so i can use them for other things like triangle to switch view circle to cancle square to zoom, things like the f5c are crazy good for their rank in sim and are capible of making 1.6 million SL in one full sim match
great Video!
Number 1 tip: have good fps
Been using the SBD-3 1.7br Perfect plane in my opinion
I have a nice hotas so I prefer manual trimming, where you can adjust each value with a rocker, If you have the extra keys available, id definitely do this, it helps a lot
you are my favourite youtuber right now
Daww thanks!!!
Very nice video man🙂👌👏👏
Thank you! :)
Great tips thx
Throughout the video I watched how you aimed in the battles, I could never land a shot other than co-incident or spray and pray shots. Thanks. :)
Wish I could afford to play this free game.
This video was very helpful. My only issue with sim VR is I feel like the frames get choppy. Even at 90fps the lines are not right and zig zaggy. Haven't figured that out yet
I get noticeable frame-time spikes in War Thunder on a plain old 60hz monitor even when my system is reporting 180fps, and the dip only falls to 120fps. You'd think that wouldn't cause a lag, but if the GPU runs out of VRAM, it will go to system memory, and I think that's where the lag happens? What fixed it for me was not running a browser/video while playing, and reducing graphics settings. If you see your GPU going to 90-100% VRAM during play, maybe it's the same issue. I ignore FPS in War Thunder, and just go by feel.
The only problem I have, is aiming. I can't really hit other planes bc my flying skills suck. Although, I can land perfectly.
Aiming is definitely one of the trickier aspects. If you fly with a stick I suggest having a look at sensitivity, non-linearity in your control settings.
Me too, I can maneuver to grab the enemy's six no problem, and then its Imperial Stormtrooper marksmanship time
Just keep practicing. Gunnery is arguably one of the hardest skills to obtain and can take years to master. I've been flying various combat sims for around 20 years but still struggle from time to time.
@@reggiekoestoer1511 try to shoot while not putting a load on the aircraft i.e. pulling the stick. Trim your aircraft to be stable and try to make smooth, calm inputs.
It also helps to get really close, I generally set my guns between 150-250 meters, less on some planes. Try to get so close that the enemy plane fills up your entire crosshair, then fire a single, well aimed burst. This will conserve ammo and increase the probability of a killing blow.
@@ItsATrap614 oh thanks, that's a really useful tip, gonna try unloading when shooting! You're right about getting up close too. I've read and watched interviews of former Japanese Zero pilots and they recommend the same (shoot only when you're so close you definitely can't miss). That's the only way I can get kills since my aim >300m is piss poor haha
Just now getting into sim, since I'm loving cockpit in VR. Can't really do that in arb or air arcade. Hard to be on even playing fields. Ive gotta say, this is giving me a massive headache on trying to control my aircrafts
If controls are your issue you’ll figure them out as you learn the plane if it’s how the plane flies you can look up tips on specific planes and just do random manoeuvres to get a feel for it
merci baucoupppppppppp pour tes conseils

I'm new to sim. I got a T. HOTAS One as a gift. Is that enough? Do I need rudder pedals? How do I avoid spinning out?
Hello I have a question I am planning on purchasing the f5c to play simulator battles to grind the tech tree however he does not want to play sim what can I say also the f5c does not have radar how can i compensate for that
I am confused when I join a simulator battle I can't turn my plane it just goes forward then turns and crashes. How do I fix this?
If you want the most realistic experience sim is the way to go. If you're not playing sim you're cheating yourself. And the lack of razzle dazzle markers is a plus! You don't need to broadcast your intentions with those "look at me!!!" markers like AB or RB does.
How do I spawn in a bomber first spawn in sim with enough spawn points, can I even do this anymore???
So I'm new to the game I only have it like 1 week and I was playin sim because I have not many silver lions but when I took of my plane kept dragging its self straight down no matter how much I pull up how do I fix it
So, I'm new to WT (lvl 10) and new to EC, playing on an Xbox 1, and I can't find answers to 2 aspects you've discussed. 1) If you're flying a bomber, on your way back RTB, and the game ends, do you still get the rest of the withheld points you earned earlier with your bombing (even though you don't get a chance to land)? and B) I've returned safely to base with one aircraft, waited through the repair, refuel & rearm period, then left that aircraft to take a different one, still be flying when the game ends, and still end up losing my security deposit (although I'm not sure on which aircraft). Is that normal now? BTW, great videos. Thanks for putting so much into them.
Edit: OK. After a few more EC sessions, I still don't have an answer for question 1, but for question B I think I understand that the security deposits work like the costs for individual aircraft to join an assault air arcade game, i.e. you pay your fee up front and never get it back. Then if you lose that aircraft, you've already paid for it; if you keep it the whole game, you don't get a refund; and if you get another aircraft, you get to pay another fee for that one. Also, I've noticed that you don't have to have an aircraft from the lowest BR in your lineup anymore - at least that's the way it's working for me. I think I may have just confused the rules for Spawn Points (with which I've never played) with Security Deposits (which is all I've ever known). Still, what do you think about both questions?
Also, do you know where I might find a complete legend for the aircraft maps in EC (Like, what are the letters 'B' & 'C' for in the Port Moresby map - are those additional bombing targets, or ports to be captured somehow, or what)?
Tearex you got some weird comments
Yes I am suffering a bot problem, trying to solve it at the moment but right now all I can do is manually delete this crap :(
Yknow what the most fun thing to do is?
To take out mini based with a swordfish and to actually kill a boat in one
what joystick do u use?
i find the "mouse joystick" setting to be very hard to use
i just really want to know how to aim as good since i usually try to rudder my sight onto target
how do you trim the russian I-16 for a joystick? I have tried but it still flies all over the place
Would you have any tips for IFF? I get really confused wether I’m shooting a friendly or enemy before I’m either too close or killed them already :/
I know this is old but you did you get your FOV that far back???? Mine is so close to the front I can’t see anything side to side
Just one question: how do you know how to trim the rudder on the spitfires? (or how much rudder to use in turns). I can't find the slip/turn indicator
I trim mine based on how the plane "feels". Everyone will have a slightly different preference but my goal is to try and keep its roll as neutral as possible, if I can trim the pitch then its a bonus.
The slip skid indicator in british planes isn't a ball in a tube like the rest, it's a gauge with 2 arrows on it. The upper arrow is slip/skid, the lower arrow is turn rate. It works exactly the same as the other type (i.e. if the arrow points right, add right rudder to correct), so once you get used to it it's easy.
As far as trimming goes, get into straight and level flight and trim the rudder when the slip/skid indicator is neutral, or slightly more if you need to counteract rolling tendencies since spits dont have aileron trim
how do i fly in sim its really weird on xbox atleast for me like first i couldnt get off the ground after 30 mins of f'ing with the controlls i managed to get into the sky but i still cant turn and shizz what do i do idfk controlls are weird tryd resetting em too but then i couldnt even take off again

One question about trim fixation, when I press the button to reset my trim axis after I make a change, will it zero it or will it go back to the fixation settings?
That's a real question I need answered myself
I started to play sim recently. Less than I would like to, because you cannot complete battle pass challenges in sim... I'm playing jets because they Re easier, usually the US because you get easy access to missiles.
Its a shame you can't to battle pass in Sim. I understand why they have not included sim but it still sucks. How are you finding it compared to AB/RB ?
@@TeaRexChannel why didn't they include it? I have no idea
Anyway, Sim is really fun and with missiles not even that hard. I usually go in with f3d as first spawn, then the cougar and then the phantom. Yesterday I got 6 kills in a row with the phantom, aim7 seem to work much better in Sim than they do in air rb
@@TeaRexChannel today I got repeatedly clubbed instead :(
Some days you will get clubbed a lot, especially if you are new to sim gameplay. Just keep at it, learn from it and enjoy yourself :)
@@TeaRexChannel I played again and tonight it was mixed. In a game I got clubbed at first, then I got several kills with my phantom. Sim is very fun anyway, I m really liking it. I m sorry helis cannot be used because they would really be great and add variety. And, I tried to use the ballistic computer on the phantom but it doesn't seem to be working
So what’s the point of simulating trim if you just hit a button and it trims itself. Not only that you can save the settings so you never have to think about it again?
idk I've flown over 100 battles, I don't think i want to continue without head tracking and/or a joystick. mnk isn't cutting it. does anyone feel the same?
Does autotrim work in sim? I have it on and my plane always slides off to the left
Every time I play the sim, the plane goes into autorotation and I end the game before I reach my opponent. Maybe it's a mouse control issue?
Can u make a Video about Crew Perks for Air SB? Cuz i really quetion some perks. Like "Awerness" wich actually help u in RB, where Icons from enemies plopp up around you earlier. I just want to know, what or how does it help u in SB?
Hmmm you raise a very good question. As far as I know it doesn't affect sim. Will take a closer look!
@@TeaRexChannel cool thanks alot! I asked already several YT'bers and noone could answer me that (they only copy pasted the ingame popup description of it 😂) when u are working forward to answer this misterious question, you maybe could make directly a vifeo abouz all Perks. Until now, there is not one video wich cover exactly this hole topic. Would be really interessting. Cuz for Tank SB, RB and Air RB are alot of videos about crewperks available, but not Air SB...
how do you make the lines go away when you spawn in do i have to have a flight stick or something because if i could make them go away i would learn sim. its two half cercles and a dot in the center i guess its supposed to help you know if your levle but its so annoyibg brings me right out what would be a beutiful experiance
