Thank you so much for this video! No one’s really discussing this but not wanting to let go of originals has been a major issue for me. I’ve been wondering why and you’ve hit the nail on the head there with the fear based thinking... super helpful channel! 🙏🏻

Just to say I'm an oil painter not professional but if I do manage to create something that I really like and even surprise myself with a little artistic breakthrough I think it would be hard for me to let that go. Not that anyone is breaking my door down to buy anything.

Not real attached but my wife snagged a sketch/study of a friend of ours dog I did in preparation for a birthday piece I was gonna do for her and framed it and gave it to her haha! I told her it was a sketch and she was like “ no it’s great I’m giving it to her” . I was a little mortified and laughed pretty hard.
I do feel my art is very personal. I’ll do a good one and give that too her too:)

Thank you Ellen for this video! At one point, I decided that if I wanted to make room in my work space and get into new creations, I had to let go of my originals. I want my artwork to give happiness and color into other people's home. My feeling is that this way, I can get to the next step. Best regards, Chantal

Thank you for this, I’m thinking of selling some originals and am struggling letting go. I feel a lot of attachment to them bc I spend a lot of time on them and put a lot of energy and emotion into them. These paintings are like my heart and soul but when I realize that other people will enjoy them more than me having them in a big room I use for storage, I think I might be able to let go.

Hi Ellen.... the joy of selling original work comes later when a customer writes you after many years and just wants to say hi and tell you that the piece they bought from you is their center piece of their collection. It's a good feeling. When I first finish a piece, and I really like it, it is difficult to part with it, but if the price is right, I can always paint again. Good video.

I had to think about this, and came to realize that I like to keep my paintings because they make me feel safe. Seriously, that’s how it came to me (although my reasoning mind wouldn’t have thought of it). I can see my worth in them. They reassure me. I don’t feel as much that way about the ones I don’t love, but I love most of them. Consequently, I really have too many and need to sell some, lol.

I've never really been reluctant to part with my art. I was a little sad to sell one piece-- it was one where I overcame a lot of fears and stepped in a very new direction-- but even then, I wasn't super attached to it. I think it's because my favorite part of being an artist is making the art and once the art is done (sometimes before), I've already moved on and I'm excited to start something new. I'm happy when one of my originals gets a home because otherwise it will probably sit in a corner collecting dust. (I only have so much wall space you know.) It's way better if it goes to someone who will display and treasure it properly

Great subject. I have sold my work in the past, I have given paintings away to people who I could see really appreciated them. I have only just realised, thanks to your video, the emotions attached to certain paintings since my son died, is why I won't sell, and the other reason, could I ever produce something like this again.
Having these works around me is proof I can do this.

I am a freelance artist and a Zentangle Teacher. I have created many original artworks, small and large sizes, unique and beautiful, each of a kind. And I tell you, it is weird that I don't find it hard to sell my originals. I don't know, I feel, as long as I am working on my artwork daily and committed to it, I see this as an opportunity to grow. Also, when I do an artpiece, I start with an intention on selling and not keeping it. I try to keep a finished scan copy for myself so that I can put it on my website or elsewhere. I think, its the intention that plays the role while creating artwork.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I want to sell some of them the ones that I'm not attached to, but my very favorites it would take a really nice chunk of money to get me to let go. There are some that I have sold that are my best work and that I am really proud of I don't mind that I sold it because they love it so much they actually take it places to show it off. So I made someone really happy and they are advertising they love it so much.

  • @ellesnyder942

She mentioned the fear of what would become of them.. I personally feel that if someone pays me well for a piece, it's not going to end up in a landfill or thrift shop (although that kind of thing does happen when folks die and others get rid of their belongings..) While I have a few pieces that I'm attached to and wouldn't sell, I'm usually most in love with the latest piece, and older ones "age out" of that "specialness". (lol I made the comment before I finished watching your video and found you had said the same thing.)

I often have no issue parting with originals, but there are a few I really like (breakthrough moments, subject matter, etc) Those originals I just price a little higher than the others. A teacher once told me that I should never walk away from a sale disappointed, and I still think of that when pricing work today, because ultimately would I rather be sitting with the piece I made or money to buy supplies to create more? Usually the answer is I'd rather sell the work to support creating more work!

So if any question or want to know from me I am always helpful or I also want to know from others because of society never alone from one person always need for each other, many times ago I like to meet you and know what about art society

The reason I really don't want to sell the originals is because with alcohol inks they fade and I just can't feel right about selling something that will fade in the future. So, prints are what I've figured I would sell when I get to that point. I don't mind selling acrylic pours because they are more stable.

Sorry to hear about your pup's.
Selling my artwork used to be difficult for me. Then, like every other art whore, I started charging more for it. A decent price add to the consumer's idea of worth. I paint miniatures in oil. Getting two hundred dollars for a 4 inch by 4 inch canvas does ease the pain and besides, I can always paint another one.

    • @EllenBrennemanStudio

Great attitude, Daniel - and yes, that price point does take the sting out of letting them go, I'm sure!
