Manring's music reverberates in my skull and my chest in a way that I can't really describe... like it goes through my ears, but doesn't go to my brain to get processed. Instead, it goes to my whole body, and my brain says nothing but "close your eyes".
For those who are thinking that playing on a bass is "easy", for those who needs basses with 5, 6, 8 strings or more... To all of us playing on 4 strings basses, Michael Manring is a good example that music is an art and a infinite source of inspiration ! Stunning.
not only is he extremely talented on bass, he's very proficient with the use of the ebow. i love the slightly Indian raga themes that run through this for the first 4 mins.
Makes me think of going back in time to Egypt and having a glance into the people, watching the great sphinx getting built and looking at what the great civilization used to be.
Okay, like I said earlier I've never used an ebow nor seen an ebow up close. But after watching some of the stuff Michael does I understand how it works now. It's amazing how talented this man is.
Marijn Pelkmans I agree with your statement. I think the main Reason Jaco is not really a good bass soloist is because there wasnt much theory or expansion on soling for Bass guitar in the 60's or 70's. You can use Stanley Clarke as an example he makes good music as a Band composer But solo wise I wouldn't say he's more appealing to listen to like Victor Wooten. Jaco, Stanley, and James Jameson or Paul Mccartney and John from the who they paved for bass players expand the creativity Larry Graham is another example. As a Bass Player I agree Jaco wasn't really apealing because of the lack of creativity he knew of that time period. Billy Sheehan is great at his techniques But I'll take him over Jaco. But I learned a lot of interesting Things from Jaco then I have from Billy Sheehan or Stanley Clarke. I enjoy Stu hamm as well as Victor Wooten for solo improvising.
Christian Henry. You're entitled to your preference of course. But Jaco wrote the piece of music that created this entire style of bass playing, "Portrait of Tracy". To say he was not a good bass soloist and lacked creativity is just self contradictory.
pCeLobster I'm saying that most people who dont like bass music really don't understand his improvising techniques for bass. I think you didnt understand my Comment.
Another thing he does is uses relatively small string gauges, standard gauge strings and lower tuned-standard gauge strings need a lot of energy to vibrate them amply enough but by using a thinner string less energy is required. Just something else to think about beyond all of the sweet spot stuff that is still needed.
i was the same, at times it did nothing but i got it working. its VERY sensitive!! you have to hold it over the "hotspot" over the bass pickup, thats crucial. if nothing happens still, hold it a little closer to the string and bend the string with your left hand a lot if you want those harmonics :)
@ThanatopicalRape My Question came up because of the lightnes he plays. It sure looks like someone just improvise nice music. Therefore was that question. Please look at it again, and You will notice, that I only was interested in Manring and his music. Now I learned more, now I see clearer. Cheers.
@gebass6 Thanks for Your reply. I didn´t know Manring. Yeah, in this case it´s awesome. But imagine: Any nerd could sit in a livingroom and fiddle on a bass. OK, not anybody, he should know how to play, the intonation is very good. But watching him remains me watching a child, playing with toys. He has fun, sits there, grinning - and "fiddling around". I don´t mean this in a unfavourable way. Thanks for the fast answer!
El alumno supera al maestro, en este caso, tenia que ser usted el portador de la tecnica, gracia y habilidad de Pastorius a otro nivel. Excepcional, fenomenal y unico.
cough . . WOW! . . . thanks for your latest upload from this phenomenal loungeroom gig. Does this mean you have even more footage to share with us?! Truly AMAZING!
I think if I work really hard at practicing scales chords patterns licks etc 16 hours a day for the next ten years I could be almost as good as Manrings little finger
That was pretty intense, I know Capo's are not commonly seen being used on Bass, But I love playing Bass with a capo, try it sometime if you haven't before.
@The1Kong I can tell you're not a troll, so I will also reply to this - This is in NO way "fiddling around" I assure you...Every single song of his, he can (and STILL does) recreate Live PERFECTLY...I mean, this video itself is obviously live, so this is a prime example. There is an insane level of structure and what I suppose you could call "Quantum Music Theory" in each of his songs. And because of his 2 Signature Bass's De-Tuners, his songs are 100% unique and original. He cannot be matched.
Manring transcends the laws of physics and imagination. I just hope that with the hundreds of times that I have watched these videos put up by wizman440 something rubs off into my playing.
The only way to stop the troll is to stop feeding it. Give him thumbs down, mark him as spam, whatever. But don't feed him anymore. It'll just make it worse.
how does he get the bass to continuously ring like that? I know that something like a D-comp can keep a note for a long time but that long? And what about the ability to keep a fingered note going as well and making it swell and dissipate?
@ThanatopicalRape Thank You for not calling me a troll, if You had done so, I never would get feedet again. :D As You see on my reply to gebass6, I am able to change my mind. I didn't mean my question as offense of any kind, but I didn't know Mr. Manring at all. In the löast few months I got me some pieces of his musik, and all I can say about this: Awesome! I had a question about Mr. Manring, I did get an answer, andf I did look for further Information. No problem at all. :D ;-)
Just one question: Is he able to reproduce any song twice? Or is he just fiddeling around? OK,it sounds just awesome. But are this reproduceable peaces of music?
On a fretless it's easy to adjust for the issue (just as pianos are slightly detuned to compensate), was it the strumming or tuning you were objecting to? No, my opinion is not retarded, for the reasons I gave in my first comment. I like it, it's not about being a fanboy. However arrogantly you choose to make your point, it's not an objective opinion. I doubt a world class artist like Michael would care at all about your likes or dislikes, regardless of your penchant for false authority
this shit is kinda scary and i listen to heavy underground black metal!!! Its wierd as fuck. What kind of bass is that? I have so many questions!! This is all new to me it's freaking mind boggling!!
Stop talking about things you don't understand. As a player of both bass and guitar, I can tell you that almost no matter what strings you use on either, it's going to be worlds easier to play harmonics on the bass than the guitar, and they'll sound infinitely better. You aren't winning any friends or approval arguing your points here, give up while you're behind.
really y'all ? no structure no rhyme or reason? sorry michael but its just a bunch of noise and you pulled what i think is the root melody, straight out of alice n chains "heaven beside you" bass line! sorry man i hate to be the bearer of bad news. suggestion... spend a little more time on each of your songs. you don't need to record and implement the first things that resonates off your strings every damn time you play. many times in your structuring you keep drifting and drifting, eventually getting so far away from melody and song relevance that it becomes lost and then we are just back to a dude who memorized a cool finger patterning and right back into chaos of frequency and no structure
I agree that he's a fantastic bass player. Truly ground breaking. However, Drew is correct about the Alice in Chains comparison.

+Scott Hogg.. Please explain to me how he is right about the Alice in Chains comparison. So wait, because there are a few notes that sound similar, he is ripping off AIC? So wait, every other bassline that shares notes and melodies similar to others are also complete ripoffs and shouldnt be appreciated?.. smh.. We all get our inspiration from other musicians and sounds. Who cares if there are some similarities. Michael Manrings whole body of work is probably the most original and diverse collection of Music I have ever heard. The guy has played almost every style of music and has composed so much original music it is truly astounding. So even if he did bite of AIC(which I highly doubt) I think i'll give Michael a pass here lol
He's right about it sounding like an Alice in Chains song. I never stated that Michael Manring ripped off the band. Similarities happen all the time.

+Scott Hogg.. Absolutely similarities happen all the time.. But remember, the OP was insinuating that Michael straight ripped this song off of AIC and is saying that it is a bad thing that there are similarities and you agreed with his statement. There are thousands of songs that have similar riffs and melodies, but that doesnt make them bad. The OP's whole comment is completely criticizing every aspect of Manring's music. I mean come on, this song is over 10 minutes long with tons of aspects to it and tons of different sounds. "Heaven Beside You" by AIC is comprised of 2 bass riffs repeated and that is it.
I agreed that it sounded like Alice in chains because it does. That's all. If you look at my original post you can see that I also praise Mr Manring. He's a talented guy.
This is phenominal. I've never heard anything like this before. Magic, simply magic.

Manring is absolutely incredible!

the harmonics in the end from 9:32 are so incredibly beautiful...

Michael has detuners and also plays piccolo bass.
So it's not your typical 4 string.
Beautiful bass and playing!
Simply amazing. Very emotive piece.
Wonderful! I think this might be my favorite of his performances.
what a great bassist..
amazing talent!
not only is he extremely talented on bass, he's very proficient with the use of the ebow. i love the slightly Indian raga themes that run through this for the first 4 mins.
Wooow, you're a fantastic bass player!
An inspiration to many, thumbs up
the part starting around 7:41 is absolutely amazing
Having been in the real Sagrada Familia, I must say that he captures that feeling of sheer SCALE of the thing perfectly.
Now, this is art!
This brings me closer to the bass god..............amazing to say the least. I swear Michael is from Planet Bass millions of years in the future!!!!!
Makes me think of going back in time to Egypt and having a glance into the people, watching the great sphinx getting built and looking at what the great civilization used to be.
+Seth Johnston Very nice visualization.
Okay, like I said earlier I've never used an ebow nor seen an ebow up close. But after watching some of the stuff Michael does I understand how it works now. It's amazing how talented this man is.
Das ist es. Danke dafür!
lovely. a true innovator on the electric bass :-)
Another great piece! Thank you so much for posting these.
This is so beautiful and unbelievable, especially if you play bass yourself. Now don't kill me, but I like this way more than Jaco.
+Marijn Pelkmans
I agree, for me Manring expanded the possibilities of the bass far more then Jaco ever did.
+Matt Hooke yes. there's no doubt about that.

¡Qué maravilloso es esto!
sweet, a new Manring video!
Космос. Просто далекая галактика. Вселенная.
Amazing
Quelle merveille!
bellissimo!

It all just dissolves at 4:57. It can go anywhere.

I think that is a capo at fret 0 of 0
=)
Amazing song!!! Viva manring!
Great video, I wish Manring played at my house. Kind of harsh to sack someone for coughing.
They're the effects of ingesting highly purified awesome.
El alumno supera al maestro, en este caso, tenia que ser usted el portador de la tecnica, gracia y habilidad de Pastorius a otro nivel. Excepcional, fenomenal y unico.
Shitt hes so creative! damn i like it. the new wizard of bass.
@DarkCross123 Yep! He was his teacher
indeed is proud!
cough . . WOW! . . . thanks for your latest upload from this phenomenal loungeroom gig. Does this mean you have even more footage to share with us?! Truly AMAZING!
the best
so really. you know your fucking excellent at what you do when you're playing fretless. Manring is fucking talenteddd
For all you dubstep lovers, the drop is at 9:39.
Lol
Entrancing melody.
An Eb-Bow! Damn If I knew this thing could be used for bass I would've bough one years ago!
I think if I work really hard at practicing scales chords patterns licks etc 16 hours a day for the next ten years I could be almost as good as Manrings little finger
listen to it instead of watching it, and you'll find it funky boy
Dark, unreal, amazing moment at 3:55 =O
bellezza!
It's hard to line the grooves up with bass strings, and it takes longer to get the mass of it moving. It's a skill in itself.
That was pretty intense, I know Capo's are not commonly seen being used on Bass, But I love playing Bass with a capo, try it sometime if you haven't before.
I NEED A HYPERBASS!!!!!
What comes from Mixing up Jaco Pastorius and Michael Hedges?
@doublethumpbass89 jaco and god must have worked together doing manring. Not sure if you know, but manring was jaco's student.
I pictured a scene from Black Hawk Down, something when someone is in serious trouble... this is perfect for that.
@The1Kong I can tell you're not a troll, so I will also reply to this - This is in NO way "fiddling around" I assure you...Every single song of his, he can (and STILL does) recreate Live PERFECTLY...I mean, this video itself is obviously live, so this is a prime example. Damn.
make me chill !
its called an ebow. google it. it is pretty awesome.
I just got one a couple days ago and I can't get it to work on my bass. It works fine on guitar, though. I have no clue how Manring does it.
Thin gauge strings? high string tension maybe?
@MrStrangeSensation Only if you can pull out that kind of
The actual piece like the recording doesn't start until 4:00.
When he puts down the E-Bow.
It'll just make it worse.
and have you counted the zero fret ? ;)
Michael Manring = Jesus of the Bass Guitar
how does he get the bass to continuously ring like that? I know that something like a D-comp can keep a note for a long time but that long? And what about the ability to keep a fingered note going as well and making it swell and dissipate?
Truly amazing but one question bugs me, is that a mute or a capo on there? if it is a capo, as a guess, what fret is it on?
@ThanatopicalRape Thank You for not calling me a troll, if You had done so, I never would get feedet again. :D

Pardon me asking, but why? I have never used an ebow and I would really like to use one on my bass
Can anyone tell me please what effect is he using
si chiama E-bow, produce un campo elettromagnetico che fa vibrare le corde all'infinito (o almeno finché durano le pile ^_^)
Sooo the whole movie? lol
Just one question: Is he able to reproduce any song twice? Or is he just fiddeling around? OK,it sounds just awesome. But are this reproduceable peaces of music?
holy god i went to cosmos
this one doesn't have a bridge detuner
What the hell is he holding in his right hand ??
Extra-Ordinary.
I suppose that's the only adjective that fits to describe this playing.
Pascal
Any idea why Manring uses two hyperbasses? How are they different?
Rael0505 The bass used in this song is not an HyperBass
that's the first time I've seen a capo on a bass
Paul McCartney did it on a few Beatles songs way back when...but yeah, kinda rare.
i think it is a capo
it must be like on the 7th or 8th "imaginary fret" haha
he uses an ebow. infinite sustain. im getting one in 2 days :)
amazed dude, "Gah...*" 2:36 lol
The MDMA Ultra-zone
to anyone putting down his performance, upload a video of you playing this, then improving on it.if you cant, then settle down.
On a fretless it's easy to adjust for the issue (just as pianos are slightly detuned to compensate), was it the strumming or tuning you were objecting to?

What make of bass is that? Thanks
A Zon Hyperbass Michael Manring signature model.
this shit is kinda scary and i listen to heavy underground black metal!!! Its wierd as fuck. What kind of bass is that? I have so many questions!! This is all new to me it's freaking mind boggling!!
Bruh how he make it sound egyptian
@zebport You disagree with yourself lol...
ampeg

normally I like his strumming technique, but I agree that it is a bit sloppy and distonic in this composition.
You must be a riot at parties. Bye bye now.
Dat why guitarist suck, and bass ftw, true talent and possiblities.
this guyz is god, dat all :o
He is using drugs!!!
