The fretless bass will always sound best with jazz music. Michael Manring did such an excellent job in this tune, it was a real pleasure to hear his playing!!
It does not get much better than this. A beautiful flightworthy fretless bass tone. Pat Metheny"s " Bright Sized Life" has become a sort of right of passage template for fretless bass. Richard Bona also performed this piece with its composer and does an equally excellent job. Jaco's influence lives on!!
I didn't expect that Michael is able to pay such a good trbute to PM & JP because alsways considered him in solo-bass department mostly... but he sounds here so close to JP, it is such a joy to hear that. Thanks!
People should start giving thumbs up to insightfulcomments that actually have reason to be posted instead of cliche jokes always getting the dime over nickle.
One of my favorite songs ever written, and it's in good hands. He pays tribute to Jaco's original bass line with obvious respect and love, and the guitar work is fantastic. He gets that light, airy tone just like Metheny. Who's playing anyway? I only recognize Manring.
The original Manring signature series, which is no longer available was 9 grand, came with everything but the bridge and there was/(still is?) only 2 in the world, Michaels and the designers. 3 Models were available when they first came out, 5, 7 and 9 grand. Haven't lookedin a long while as even 5 grand is a bit out of reach these days. :)
@Ambary2Shy Good point(a little rude), but if you know anything about Miles Davis. Betty Davis saved his career and his stance in music. Also Betty is one of the main reasons for the "Bitches Brew" album. Whether it's sex or just having a soulmate(and sex), it can have some impact on a musicians career and what music he/she produces. Especially if that musician is empathetic and/or emotional like say a normal human being would.
@drkam6 but you cant beat the verison with bona because the three of those guys are just so tight, and they do some metric modulation too which is incredible
@Ambary2Shy i wouldent say musical skill and sex have nothing in common guitars have been helping ugly people get laid since forever i agree with the rest of your comment tho and JAZZ RULES!!! i prefere a little more all over the place jazz tho but this is still awsomely smooth makes me wanna sit in a really posh coffee place sipping my drink while waiting for some important meeting =P
I know I shouldn't be so critical, but ... after listening to Antonio Sanchez play this song, the drumming here sounds a little light weight. It doesn't really carry the song forward int he same way.
This version with Michael is WAY better than Bona. Bona shows too much off! Michael plays it here with a lot of melody, I love those open strings, adding ambient.
This video finally answers the ancient question: Who gets laid more, the bass player or the guitar player? Neither. This song makes me think of elevators.

Michael Manring is the man! I've been listening to his music since "Unusual Weather".
You should check out his early stuff.
I Love this álbum.
Michael hedges got me into manning.
Wow, love how you can tell he picked up a lot from Jaco but worked to make it his own.
@@isaacbeats2009 Yes, I knew he was Jaco's student. That's why I made that comment. :)
My favourite fretless bass tone ever, spectacular bass in the hands of the brightest Jaco incarnation...
I didn't expect that Michael is able to pay such a good trbute to PM & JP because alsways considered him in solo-bass department mostly... but he sounds here so close to JP, it is such a joy to hear that. Thanks!
This sounds soo awesome! And it has that Michael Manring aethereal feel. Thanks for posting!
Marvelous!! What a bass tone! Thank you for posting!
amazing sound on that bass
... the class of these guys... A!
Man alive this is good music! Yes! Manring is a hairy scary musical bass MONSTER!
I wanna defret all my basses since I learned of this guy.
Mad skills and musicality.
Very nice work from Michael on bass !...
Woooooooooooow beautiful!
I love jazz!!! ♡& ESPECIALLY THESE GUYS!
great version of a beautiful song
it is fantastic music.
Epic achievement of sound and class...!!!
Wonderful!!!!
This guy is fantastic!

Capolavoro!!!
Es genial!
Good job.
Great song
Michael studied with Jaco when he was young!

Jamie Findley.
As long as they're not playing this song in it, I just might be up for it.
Nice! Love this tune. The whole album is great. I'll bet you guys could do a great job with Midwestern Nights Dream, too.
They look like they’re playing on a stage from an old Mortal Kombat game
Very fine piano playing.
man the guitar guy hit a few clams...dang
Fantastic playing, bro! and superb tone and many, many compliments for your impeccable intonation, and musicality!
@5fabfreds HAHAHAHAHAHA. Ah man. Thanks so much for that laugh, that was great xD
I prefer manring's solo over Bona's solo in the other vid of this song. just my opinion. more melodic. much respect for both.

@Ambary2Shy Hey i'm 14 and loved jazz.
The only other fretless that I would love to have besides the Warwick, Wal, or Carl Thompson.
@5fabfreds Hey you're right!!
@drkam6 but you cant beat the verison with bona because the three of those guys are just so tight, and they do some metric modulation too which is incredible
@MrStrangeSensation It says in description...
I cook the garlic slightly just before I add the sauce
amazing! but, to bad the video lags a bit.
@SteveCoxlap I agree with you. I think Manring is more of a performer than a jazz musician.
@ginaonthebass
I met him, and there may be only a few more humble, positive individuals on Planet Earth. Believe.
I was on this shoot as a camera guy, and you are right-he is really kind and humble.
@Ambary2Shy I actually love jazz and this shit is sexy..
@Klingen83 so who do you think are good? if you can't realise who are talented...
How’s he getting an acoustic guitar to sound electric?
0:33 ugh, 1:07 ehm, 1:36 ugh, 1:56 ehm.. is this a 'shreds'-video?
I would love to know who the piano player is.
Barry Gurley
From Western Maryland
@bjburesh1980 That's a pretty closed-minded approach to music listening.
Who’s on piano here?
Dude!!!! The sound is so off. It's too bad because this really is a bad ass song.
@@soundhealer6043 What do you mean not a 4/4 tune?
I love his sole stuff, but he is not making all the changes here.
Shame Mr Metheny didn't play on this.........
I imagine it would! But it sounds like he's farting, rather than playing..
He looks like Kenny G :D but playing bass! I still like Bona' solo better

Sometimes this song sounds good, but here it's a little elevatorish. The best I think is Pat Metheny's first studio version.
All of Matheny's stuff is Macy's material lol
the guitarist looks like LARRY CORYELL is he ??
+Carlo Giovannini Pat Metheny
+Cyborg Rabbit It's not Pat Metheny. This is a Pat Metheny song, however.
Kev G. oh okay, that would explain why i thought he was Pat Metheny, then
+Carlo Giovannini Jamie Findlay
he´s Kenny G
absolutely no transcencence idd
This version with Michael is WAY better than Bona. Bona shows too much off! Michael plays it here with a lot of melody, I love those open strings, adding ambient.
these guys are faking it
it's nice, but Bona plays it better!
SHUT UP!!!!!! He IS my sister!!!!!!!!
Price? That is not a 5 grand sounding solo.
I think thats your sister playing bass
... Feo
no picks. like real men
Pat Metheny played it with a pick.
This video finally answers the ancient question: Who gets laid more, the bass player or the guitar player? Neither.
This song makes me think of elevators.
Monty Python did a far better version, apart from it being Jaco on Main Street.
Love Manring, but the guitarist shouldn't quit his day job.
Dont really like it... :\
no soul here.....
turn off that piano
Great skill everybody, but.... what a mess. Anybody watching this, do yourself a favour and check out the original.
At least!
Real playing and not all this bullshit harmonics
Horrible bass sound :(
Wash your ears much more often, man!
Sucks! worst interpretation of Bright Size Life ever... Come on! there's no soul there!
amazing! but, to bad the video lags a bit.
