True. There is also the interference issue between bluetooth and wifi which leads to audio stuttering from time to time. With wired, you don't have to deal with all this stuff. And you need to keep it charged always which is also a nuisance. Apple solved a problem that was non existent to make money and everyone followed suite!

Two years ago, in the summer, I was at my cottage in the mountains, and coming home one evening, I took the shortcut where you have to jump over a river about two meters wide and about half a meter deep. Since there is no light there, I use the flashlight on my phone and before I jump I put it in my pocket, as I have done hundreds of times before, but this time the phone decided that it should fall in the middle of the river. Thanks to his flashlight being on I was able to get him out of the river almost instantly, he was under water for no more than five seconds but not only is this phone not waterproof it also has a million holes in the case, I immediately turned it off and while I walked to the house, disassembled it and disconnected the battery from the socket. I left it open on a fan heater for 2-3 hours, put it back together and the phone has been working flawlessly ever since. @@vibetribe52I do waaaaaay more on my phone than make phone calls. Especially as a graphic designer. I appreciate the big screen. My hands are big as hell. That’s actually the sole reason I changed because I couldn’t type well on a the keyboards. I appreciate the fast pace software. I appreciate I can send more than a text. I definitely appreciate I don’t have to use zoom or other video software to talk with my friends. And as a graphic designer, if I don’t have my computer by my side, I can easily get my graphics and send them where they need to go. As a photographer, I appreciate the fact that the camera on phones today can serve as temporary replacements in case I can’t get my hands on an actual camera. I appreciate the big amount of storage you get on phones today because for people like me, that’s exactly what I need. And also as someone who loves music, having my music right on my phone at my disposal instead of having to grab a portable CD like I did when I was growing up is epic. I come from the era of flip phones and portable dvd and CD players and although I miss some of those gadgets, I understand fully why they are replaced. Yall are legit showing yalls age. And I’m a person that typically likes to keep things traditional. But my phone and gadgets are not one of those things. If phones were like they were in the 2000s while everything else has advanced, I would be highly dissatisfied.
They kept headphone jacks until they were relevant and after mass market bluetooth earbuds became q thing they removed it. Remember Apple ridiculed saying Iphone 4 does not need go be any bigger. There was Galaxy Note at that time. Note 1 basically changed the industry.
Because you know what I want when I'm listening to music? A notoriously-unreliable wireless signal that cuts-out periodically and starts blasting my music through the phone speaker instead. Make a pair of wireless earbuds that never lose connectivity and don't need to be recharged for 20 years, and you'll finally have a better product than wired earbuds.
I like the headphone jack but it has nothing to do with not being to afford wireless as mentioned here and much more to do with not having to charge something else. It is annoying when you are using bluetooth and it dies. You don't have that issue for devices using the headphone jack. So especially if I am at home, I will 100% use wired.
Not trying to be a smart ass but all you need is a $5 adapter and then you can plug in your wired headphones. So basically a headphone jack is redundant to have.

The headphone jack is the thickest part of the phone? Funny I don't remember phones having headphone jack humps the way phones have camera module humps now.
Have a roomba. Realized very quickly that its simply a novelty for a medium sized multilevel home. Constantly gets stuck in certain spots with warnings to untangle, can't do stairs and sometimes can't find its way back to the base station. Bought a lightweight\portable dyson which has proved to be much more practical and useful IMHO. Robot vaccums have a long way to go to replace existing vacuums.
@@joeking433 For the roomba to work properly, you need to live in a single story home, there should be no obstructions and the place should literally be cleaned out (leaving aside a few bread crumbs and dust). Thats not very realistic IMHO and people will give up using it after a couple of months. The idea behind roomba was a great V1 but they really need to figure out these basic issues if they want mass adoption.
I have the irobot vacuum and mop robots, and I can honestly say i don't think i can live without them! The feeling of coming to a clean home after long day of work is just too good! Especially if you have pet. The shiny floor is everything.

@Geeks: Since the charging time is takes forever and the sound quality is an abomination, clearly, you're collecting a paycheck for making this pathetically erroneous claim. Or you're just clearly insane.
I can't use wireless earbuds they constantly fall out of my ear, but I love my wireless on-ear Bose headphones they work great. My music collection is all MP3s so getting a higher quality wired headset and DAC would just be wasted.
I just use a bluetooth receiver. That way I can use all my wired stuff. It also helps that some of my wired headphones/earphones have removeable cords, so I can get a shorter cord to attach to it or just use a small plug or official bluetooth attachment cords.
I don't understand the arguments for ditching the headphone jack. If you are lisening to music no really good headphone exist without a jack. You can get pretty serious studio quality wired headphones for $200 or 300. You can get better quality than any ear bud for 50. The wireless offering lacks high quality options. On top of that latency on BT headsets is still way to big if you are making music with your portable device. Space saving is not an argument you can definitly fit the port. Waterproofing is not an argument, I got tons of ip68 devices with 3.5mm jack. The convinient of having no wires is definitly there. But you can have BT and a jack, like it still exists on tons of devices.
I still miss the quality of my cheap wired earphones. My bluetooth earbuds don't have that same sound. I didn't realize my Google Pixel 4 didn't have a headphone jack until i bought it :(

The issue with these "low cost" devices that still have the headphone jack is the fact that people want the headphone jack AND high performance Same with battery capacity You can get a phone with cutting edge performance, but the battery capacity will be subpar, but if you want decent battery capacity, you can get a 13,000mah phone, however you will be getting performance from 5 years ago We need a device that is designed as a tool, not as a fashion accessory
If we were talking about phones being a tool, not an accessory... They could also make the devices reasonably durable right out of the box. Instead of making them out of glass on both sides that extends all the way out to the soft aluminum corners, they could recess the screen slightly into a more durable chassis. That way it would have to fall directly on it's face onto an object protruding from the ground in order to break. We should expect a handheld device to be dropped frequently, and probably get wet occasionally.
@@somethingelse4424 the closest I have found to a phone designed as a tool, is the Ulefone power armor 13, I actually bought one specifically for the utility features, durability, and battery capacity it's waterproof up to 1.5M, drop rated to 1.2m onto concrete, has a ring around the screen and rubber on the corners for drop protection, has a massive battery, has most of the bells and whistles that exist in modern flagships, it even has a laser rangefinder, expandable storage, a reprogrammable button, 48MP camera with 4K video recording, a headphone jack, and reverse wireless charging But like all these devices, it is cursed with subpar specs in the form of a MediaTek G95 (which is serviceable for games, but is definitely not going to keep up with even last year's flagships) lack of an AMOLED display, and it's hard to get it repaired when it does break since spare parts are not readily available outside Asia If it had an AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 888 or dimensity 1200, and was popular enough that parts are available in the west, it would be pretty much perfect
the technology used for these wireless headphones are similar to infrared or antennas, distributing low frequency from right to left ear, basically slowly cooking your brain in-between. no worries though, they have not studied the long term effect and no body has complained any damage in-cases where that small battery explodes in the ears... ..and good thing that you said "apple popularize mp3" because i was enjoying my mp3 player way back 1998 when I was in asia.
And that's why I bought the Sony Xperia 1 mark 3 which has a headphone jack and all other features of 2021 flagship phones, another reason for me was micro sd card slot which also many phones these days lack of while charging 200-300usd premium over additional of 256gb storage which can be had for 50usd in micro sd form factor - one more reason for carriers to make people use their data while I can listen flac music from my phone with 1tb micro sd card. So removal of headphone jack and micro sd slots are pure marketing BS which people adopted by buying those feature-less phones...
I find it funny that nobody gives the Sony Xperia any credit about the headphone jack. I currently own the Xperia 1 MK III and absolutely love this thing. And it's a flagship. While Apple, Samsung and Google has removed the headphone jack and sd card slot (Samsung), Sony brought back the headphone jack after seeing what everybody else is doing and still have the sd card slot. After the Xperia 1 MK 1, they brought back the headphone jack on the MK II models and moving forward. I've owned both the Xperia XZ 2, XZ 3 and while they are good phones, I hated the dongle. I alway lose it. Just my imo.........
That's because of these UA-cam phone people never talk about Sony so they don't know such a phone exists I have the X5MK2 and man... I love it in every way EXCEPT... no removable battery Sony should have an X line does have a removable battery feature which would be amazing because with a spare battery you essentially will never be tethered to a charger cable again since you will be charging the spare while using the battery in the phone Other then that.. I'm actually surprised more people are not getting Xperias they are rock solid feature rich phones People don't want more features on phones now it seems by the way the phone industry is
iTunes sold copy-protected AAC, not MP3. MP3 has been popularized much earlier, Jobs hijacked this train, kicked out the driver and steered it where he wanted.
There are IP67 rated waterproof phones with a headphone jack and removable battery. For example the Galaxy S5. So waterproofing is not a good excuse for removing the jack.

You missed how the Droid mini was supposed to get andriod 5, but got stuck forever on Android 4.4.4. And Motorola/Lenovo never have their customers a reason why
Nah, I don't think they will even make many wired headphones in a couple years. No one wants to snag a wire. You can get a fine pair like the Skullcandy Uproar Wireless headphones that are great. I was listening to music when all you had was wired headphones and never want to go back to snagging the wire constantly and breaking the input jack. Bluetooth headphones connect well and have a reliable signal that doesn't drop signal when you move like the old ones. What kind of wired headphones do you have and do you use them with your smartphone?

You can have my Roomba! I absolutely hate it!!! It doesn’t even vacuumed in a logical pattern. It just makes swirls on my carpet with the dog hair. It goes over areas it already did and then it dies. I gave it to my daughter who only has hardwood in her condo.
Absolutely true this. Cheap Chinese alternatives simply cannot match the sophistication and high-quality of materials for premium tech gadgets. I've been using and abusing my Plantronics Voyager Edge for 7 years now - absolutely stunned by how reliable it is. High quality too. The iRobot is genuinely great piece of kit, however I've been using the REDMI EVE Plus for 3 months now after returning the i356 iRobot Roomba. The EVE Plus is simply MUCH better value for money and does almost everything as good or better than the iRobot which is simply too expensive!
I do have Bose Sport and Air Pods, but still I prefer cable headset, that I have been using since mid '80's. The very first mobile phone had purchased back in 2001 was, Motorola (Intelligence Everywhere) Talkabout that too a third handset, without charger.
I've never really understood why people till today still use iPhone and the ridiculous reason is because of a camera. Nothing more but a flashlight on the back.
As an audiophile, I can tell the difference in sound quality between wired connection and Bluetooth through my quality headphones. It wasn't untill very recently that I gave up my old phone and found a portable headphone amp that handles a very new less compressed lossless Bluetooth. As an audiophile, a normal Bluetooth headphone receiver does not cut it, it needs it's own built in headamp, PCM/FLAC file handling ability and it's own generous sized battery. The only problem I had with my old phone was it did not have enough power to properly drive my 16 ohm cans

Apples removal of the floppy drive and the CD drives from their macs is a good example of them moving the industry forward. Those are now hilariously antiquated pieces of technology and their exclusion allowed for better laptops. The space that had been used for the CD drive is now usually allocated to a larger battery, for example.
I agree. I also look at it as less moving Parts... Something that became more obvious with the iPad... At the time I had to purchase the disc drive accessory... I can't remember what apple called it. I think it was the Super Drive. It still works for this day and every now and then I'll plug it in to watch a DVD (remember those) or something. But why would you want change that makes things worse off in some cases? Case in point, wireless Bluetooth tech interferes with WiFi signals. So you can hear Audi stuttering from time to time when this occurs. Not to mention the constant need to charge the head set. I would have been more receptive of a wired standard that uses usbc and improved audio quality over this move. We got none of that.
Since my old phone didn't have a headphone jack I used a dongle that allowed me to use the USB-C port on my phone with an aux cable. The problem is that when I used it on long road trips, I couldn't charge my phone while listening to Google maps and music. If the road was really bumpy, the volume would fluctuate a lot too because vibrations would affect the cable contacts. I honestly probably wouldn't have had those issues with a different phone or a different cable but it really soured my opinion on getting rid of the port. Bluetooth is another option but I'd have to upgrade the audio system in every vehicle I own, which is not worth the money either.
I don't miss wired headphones what I miss is the absence of micro-SD cards. Obviously, they want consumers to have storage crunch and pay for cloud subscription and it seems to be working.

Sony still got the jack 💪
Because you know what I want when I'm listening to music? A notoriously-unreliable wireless signal that cuts-out periodically and starts blasting my music through the phone speaker instead.
Make a pair of wireless earbuds that never lose connectivity and don't need to be recharged for 20 years, and you'll finally have a better product than wired earbuds.

I like the headphone jack but it has nothing to do with not being to afford wireless as mentioned here and much more to do with not having to charge something else. I just use a bluetooth receiver. That way I can use all my wired stuff. It also helps that some of my wired headphones/earphones have removeable cords, so I can get a shorter cord to attach to it or just use a small plug or official bluetooth attachment cords.
My Bose earbuds still fall out.

The issue with these "low cost" devices that still have the headphone jack is the fact that people want the headphone jack AND high performance
Same with battery capacity
You can get a phone with cutting edge performance, but the battery capacity will be subpar,
but if you want decent battery capacity, you can get a 13,000mah phone, however you will be getting performance from 5 years ago
We need a device that is designed as a tool, not as a fashion accessory
If we were talking about phones being a tool, not an accessory...
They could also make the devices reasonably durable right out of the box. Instead of making them out of glass on both sides that extends all the way out to the soft aluminum corners, they could recess the screen slightly into a more durable chassis. That way it would have to fall directly on it's face onto an object protruding from the ground in order to break. We should expect a handheld device to be dropped frequently, and probably get wet occasionally.
@@somethingelse4424 the closest I have found to a phone designed as a tool, is the Ulefone power armor 13, I actually bought one specifically for the utility features, durability, and battery capacity
it's waterproof up to 1.5M, drop rated to 1.2m onto concrete, has a ring around the screen and rubber on the corners for drop protection, has a massive battery, has most of the bells and whistles that exist in modern flagships, it even has a laser rangefinder, expandable storage, a reprogrammable button, 48MP camera with 4K video recording, a headphone jack, and reverse wireless charging
But like all these devices, it is cursed with subpar specs in the form of a MediaTek G95 (which is serviceable for games, but is definitely not going to keep up with even last year's flagships) lack of an AMOLED display, and it's hard to get it repaired when it does break since spare parts are not readily available outside Asia
If it had an AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 888 or dimensity 1200, and was popular enough that parts are available in the west, it would be pretty much perfect
the technology used for these wireless headphones are similar to infrared or antennas, distributing low frequency from right to left ear, basically slowly cooking your brain in-between. no worries though, they have not studied the long term effect and no body has complained any damage in-cases where that small battery explodes in the ears...
..and good thing that you said "apple popularize mp3" because i was enjoying my mp3 player way back 1998 when I was in asia.
So true , i am still using my samsung s9+ , only issue is battery life , nothing else , won't upgrade for a few more years
I find it funny that nobody gives the Sony Xperia any credit about the headphone jack.
Beloved headphone jack? What other choice did we have for a long time? People just don't want things to change lol
Sony
But why would you want change that makes things worse off in some cases? Case in point, wireless Bluetooth tech interferes with WiFi signals. So you can hear Audi stuttering from time to time when this occurs. Not to mention the constant need to charge the head set. I would have been more receptive of a wired standard that uses usbc and improved audio quality over this move. We got none of that.
I'm pretty sure this is just a really long commercial. Good stuff.
Serious questions, why don't wired headphones just shift to being USB-C? Seems to make the most sense
There isn't an universal standard yet so an USB-C headphone from one brand may not work with another.
Sony still offers flagship and mid range phones with a SD card slot and headphone jack
Not on Xperias bud.
Xperias have it all even notification light (Sony actually removed this on the 5th gen of Xperias sadly boooo)
Where have you been?
Seems like now they are the only ones still offering this feature or one of think Asus also offers it on their ROG phones but I'm to lazy to check LoL
I guess SD and SIM slots are also to dang big now as well like the jack was aye
@@iamdalibor yea I'm disappointed that the notification led is gone! Sony should bring it back! I've brought this and other issues to Sony personally, so hopefully they will take note.
Most smartphones still have a headphone jack, though.
And wireless only is just laughable. Wireless charging is really slow and inefficient, and only works on distances where you might as well use some form of a wired connection.
Who’s to say it won’t get faster and better eventually? You’re dismissing new technologies based on their early implementations, not very forward-looking of you.
@@diamondwave100 Wireless power transmission is nothing new. You might know it by the name of radio. The first implementations for power delivery were made by Tesla way back in the day.
We have a very good understanding of many types of EM radiation, and it's a fact that wired connections are the most effective for power delivery.
You show the smartphone marketshare in April 2010 twice in the video, but with completely different numbers. 17:05 saying Apple has 52% and RIM 32% then again at 19:18 saying Apple has 46% and RIM has 6%. Which is correct?
I don't even know what phone i'm gonna get next cause no flagship phones have headphone jacks anymore. I've always bought a flagship phone and kept it for 4 years each time. My current phone is a OnePlus 6 which i purposely bought a month before the OnePlus 6T came out because it wouldn't have a headphone jack. Gonna hold on to my OnePlus 6 for as long as i can so that i can hopefully get a midrange phone with a headphone jack without it in any way being a downgrade.
Or just move on that headphone jacks are thing of the past.
Get the Sony Experia
@@droiddevx03 Yeah wired is so old school. I always HATED the wired headphone because they always go all tangled up and then spend 10 minutes fixing that.
Just watched three Videos back to back and enjoyed the awesome history and a look back on some of the amazing products and Companies. Thanks so much for sharing ✌️
