Thank you for putting this story together. The Tesla community has been talking about these for almost 10 years now, but Tesla never really publicizes all the good things they do, so they get a lot of haters because they're a popular company. The people who really dig in and fact check know that Tesla is a good company and is looking a the long term improvement of Earth. These people have also been rewarded by investing in Tesla. Glad to see some positive coverage on Tesla, it'll be useful for people who just read headlines and never really dig into the company's history and just hate on Tesla based on what they hear from their friends and other liars.

Tesla does do a lot of good stuff, but it certainly deserves some of the criticisms it gets, e.g. not treating it’s factory workers particularly well, or making its chargers incompatible with other manufacturers’ electric cars and its cars incompatible with other manufacturers’ charging points

From what I could find SK and LGs dispute has ended in a Settlement leading to both companies working together for further innovation. The topic ended nearly halfway through 2021.

Much of this is last year's news. The SK vs LG dispute has been resolved. Basically SK agreed to pay LG enough to cover LGs liability for their batteries catching fire in GM vehicles..

Everything about Tesla is crazy! The battery life, the tail lights, the interior etc. Tesla stocks is the best of them all! I have always hoped to invest in Tesla stocks one day but the thought of doing so without enough knowledge of the stocks market makes the whole thing less attractive to me. On just one row, 55504 is a state that produced more than that on wind alone with 92,440,997MH/h of electricity produced with a vastly dirtier grid. Residental (solar) appears to be missing and perhaps is just a vague estimate, however there are no facts (unless someone can produce the amount of energy curtailed by self production, CaSIO reports less than 2,000,000MW/h curtailed) to back up the claim that California is the top renewable energy producer.

Home battery storage is in an interesting phase where there are hobbyist. Really reminds me of the early days of personal computers where you could build a better system than you could buy and get it a piece at a time. Can't wait to see more products in this area. There is a lot of effort to link this to solar but solar is not required. Home energy storage can just be a backup for your house or shifting usage from low demand to peak demand times of day.

What are the problems with older technologies for storing energy? For large scale (city size) maybe melt salt or lift a very heavy object during the day and used the heat or gravity to create energy when demand is high? For a home or a group of homes, expensive batteries make sense, but for a city, wouldn't it be cheaper using old school technologies?
There have been some trials with molten salt and it is certainly promising, but it is far from a mature technology. It's not something that can be immediately scaled. It requires considerable improvements first. Pumped hydro is a mature energy storage technology which works very well, but there are a limited number of places that are suitable for it. Compressed air in salt domes is working in a few locations, but it still needs some improvements and again it requires a specific type of geology to work. Meanwhile, batteries are becoming cheaper and are far faster to provide power when needed. They are especially useful for balancing the grid if it begins to become unstable. What's more, without the weight constraints that are necessary for vehicles, a greater variety of battery chemistries are available to work with, some of which can be much cheaper while also providing other beneficial qualities, such as near infinite charge/discharge cycles.

I live in Canada and seen may two E-cars in my life on the road. I think they do not work good in winters. Batteries hate cold and now that battery must also heat the inside of the car with window defrost fans, making the dismal range even worst.
The reason "everyone is scrambling" has little to do with economic viability and more with government sanctions. There is a reason why electric trucks for example are not a thing, that reason being that the batteries are so insanely heavy that the load capacity of the vehicle drops to unacceptibly low levels. That includes anything Tesla currently has.

Nice video summarizing the powerful emerging trend in Energy. One quick note: at around the 23:16 mark, the potato Battery is introduced where it’s asserted that acid in the potato are converted to energy…. That seems to be asserted in popular websites too. However this is false. Not that in the instructions for the classic potato battery, 2 different metals are used - for example, one steel and the other copper. The voltage is created by the two different metals connected by the wires (with a mini light bulb or LED) and electrolyte - the potato in this case is the electrolyte. So it’s better thought off as the potato electrolyte experiment though it doesn’t sound catchy. To do a quick check, try doing the same experiment with one type of metal only, and measure the voltage - should be close to zero, and voltage is low or zero so that even the LED would not light up.

This was a great video, until you forgot about Tesla Battery production. You named 3 companies in Solid State or other tech who will not be up and running in any kind of capacity until 2026. Tesla is making batteries in Fremont, they have a battery production facility in Austin and they are Building one in Germany, which does not count for the US, but it is a US company. Tesla is working on 100GWh in production by the end of 2023. Global GWH was 286 last year, up 100%. So if Tesla can deliver on the US production by the end of 2023, they will be maybe 20% of the world EV batteries. Their plans are around 500GWH a year by 2025 and 3 TWH by 2030. Something like this. Tesla is the only Car company that has contracts with more then 15 mines for metals. They are a battery manufacture and will be the largest in the world in the next 5 years. Come on, Recycling Batteries in not to expensive. Tesla is starting to recycle, Redwood Materials are a Recycling Company selling to Panasonic who is making batteries for Tesla. There are other companies getting into the space and the cost is going down to make it profitable. Redwood Materials is already profitable, but they are investing in the company to get bigger.

Here in Canada the electric car is simply non viable because of losses in the cold. Even with heat pumps in the new Tesla you still lose 1/4 of your range if not more.
Let's revisit the regeneration diagram for electric cars. What is the weight difference between 30%, 40% and 50% of the battery and a full size electric motor? For an one electric motor model, you can reduce its battery size by 30 to 50% and replace it with an electric motor solely dedicated for regeneration which can match the output with regulator-booster circuits. And by using super capacitors and inductors as initial energy storage, you can further reduce the battery capacity, thereby getting yourself out of the tunnel vision syndrome of needing more battery materials and lack there of. Dedicated electric motor for regeneration, super capacitors and inductors are far more inexpensive and intelligent solutions to the 'not enough' batteries conundrum. Furthermore, it is not difficult for the engineers to add one more inductance coil architecture to capture the kinetic energy adjacent to the electric motor or motors. This means you don't need all that much materials to build batteries and charging stations. I'm not sure how many more face-palms I can inflict on myself.
No thats not the full story.... 1. Supercaps lose power sitting around after a few days your car super caps with be significantly if not fully drained. Imagine you battery or fuel tank going empty just sitting there and people having to pay for the energy that depeleted itself. 2. They take up more room and/or provide less energy density than most high density li-ion batteries of the same size. Space and energy is a huge deal in auto industry. 3. Voltage change on super cap over time means you can only use supercaps for certain systems for limited time intervals. Your "fix all solution" isnt really a fix all and requires a lot of trade offs in design/engineering of the vehicle. Auto industry is trying to stay out of that redesign right now and keep from losing package space to power systems. They dont want to give up package space for supercaps. Plus more super caps pushes the car to be only a city vehicle type car which industry doesnt want to shift to either. In the future there will most likely be a mix of all diferent types of electric vehicles some city, some long distance, some in between. Meaning different battery chems and different levels of super cap usage.
Electric motors can create electricity or use electricity, one motor goes both ways. You just need a controller changing which way the energy goes. Most electric cars already do this “regenerative breaking.” This regeneration does not usually exceed the batteries ability to recharge, and they’re quite efficient so no capacitors necessary. So give yourself one more facepalm because everything you’ve said is already done more efficiently in cars we already have.

Electric cars would still need brakes and rotors eventually. Wipers and wiper fluid are also still used. Cabin filters, car wash few other things. Autozone etc. will be ok
@@dcan4 EV's don't need them that much, my Prius has 120k miles on the original brake pads, it uses the motor to slow down the car and charge it, so its easier on other components, they also don't require oil changes or transmission fluid.
Ugh radioshack was a gem but they lacked the ability to properly advertise and adapt the same will happen to auto zone but it will be a slow phase out in my opinion but solar is definitely the way to go I have several solar chargers for my phone I even have two solar generators in case of a blackout. I was the only one in my building who was able to cook during hurricane Sandy I kept it to a minimum though I was able to keep lights on because I have blackout curtains

They are working with energy cooperatives, too - they are working with NOVEC (Northern Virginia Energy Cooperative) and Southern Maryland Energy Cooperative (SMECO) which my mother and I are members of. The lack of discussion of graphene aluminum ion battery as an alternative to these complicated lithium ion battery chemistries is sad. Would really like to see coverage of what Graphene Manufacturing Group and University Queensland is up to. Advantages over lithium ion include: massive power density increase (~60x faster charging); potential for much higher energy density; comparatively little concern with overheating or combustion; much simpler battery chemistry (carbon, aluminum, chlorine) which means easier to recycle, cheaper to source raw materials, and increased energy independence for everyone. All while being very compatible with existing lithium ion manufacturing processes.

i have always wondered why would we not just give every house hold a large storage battery like a tesla wall style starage battery, then everyone has their own system that will work to lessen the stress on the aging systems, they also wouldnt have to waste huge amounts of land building these stations

I think lithium ion is a great battery however I think it is more for portable type things I think the stationary is going to have to change because it's going to have to last a lot longer than 8 to 10 years ,people buy and not realizing that in 8 to 10 years they're gonna have to buy an expensive battery and then another 8 to 10 years the same thing so I so I don't think it's as consumer friendly as some people think , for starters yes it's going to work but I think in the long run things will have to change, the battery types will definitely have to change or I think they are in for big surpr I think flow batteries are key to our future they are cheaper to build cheaper to use maintenance is lower and last longer and have way more cycles and less issues issues , I think in a few short years these will be the battery to compare wish and I think they will be the battery that will be used for a long period of time

The current limitation on recycling EV battery packs is simply that there are not enough scrapped EV batteries in the supply chain yet. In the meantime, Redwood is recycling lithium-ion batteries from other products, such as smartphones. The cost of that recycled lithium is significantly less than lithium mined from the ground, and it does not require as much processing. EV battery recycling also yields other elements, including nickel, manganese, iron, aluminum and cobalt.

Great video but at 45:55 you left out the world's largest hard-rock lithium deposit which will be producing approx 160k metric tones very soon, 4x the production of Australia which you cite as the world's largest producer. Granted the Manono deposit (also in DRC) is not yet in production but initial site works have begun and it is expected to start production late 2023. Australian company AVZ Minerals is developing the project.

Solar is the cheapest form of power generation now and as more renewables are put online with power storage the price of electricity will fall

Residental (solar) appears to be missing and perhaps is just a vague estimate, however there are no facts (unless someone can produce the amount of energy curtailed by self production, CaSIO reports less than 2,000,000MW/h curtailed) to back up the claim that California is the top renewable energy producer.

Home battery storage is in an interesting phase where there are hobbyist. Really reminds me of the early days of personal computers where you could build a better system than you could buy and get it a piece at a time. Can't wait to see more products in this area. There is a lot of effort to link this to solar but solar is not required. Home energy storage can just be a backup for your house or shifting usage from low demand to peak demand times of day.
The biden infrastructure bill will charge you per mile to drive, regardless if you drive an EV or gas.

I purchased Mercedes EQS EV vehicle and I must admit it is fantastic. The battery performance is much better than I expected.
What are the problems with older technologies for storing energy? For large scale (city size) maybe melt salt or lift a very heavy object during the day and used the heat or gravity to create energy when demand is high? For a home or a group of homes, expensive batteries make sense, but for a city, wouldn't it be cheaper using old school technologies?
Cost and efficiency
There have been some trials with molten salt and it is certainly promising, but it is far from a mature technology. It's not something that can be immediately scaled. It requires considerable improvements first.
Pumped hydro is a mature energy storage technology which works very well, but there are a limited number of places that are suitable for it.
Compressed air in salt domes is working in a few locations, but it still needs some improvements and again it requires a specific type of geology to work.
Meanwhile, batteries are becoming cheaper and are far faster to provide power when needed. They are especially useful for balancing the grid if it begins to become unstable. What's more, without the weight constraints that are necessary for vehicles, a greater variety of battery chemistries are available to work with, some of which can be much cheaper while also providing other beneficial qualities, such as near infinite charge/discharge cycles.
The wisest thing that should be on every wise individual's list is to invest in different stream of income and don't depend on the government to bring in money especially now the pandemic is hitting the economy

I think they do not work good in winters. Batteries hate cold and now that battery must also heat the inside of the car with window defrost fans, making the dismal range even worst.

The reason "everyone is scrambling" has little to do with economic viability and more with government sanctions. There is a reason why electric trucks for example are not a thing, that reason being that the batteries are so insanely heavy that the load capacity of the vehicle drops to unacceptibly low levels. That includes anything Tesla currently has.

Nice video summarizing the powerful emerging trend in Energy. One quick note: at around the 23:16 mark, the potato Battery is introduced where it’s asserted that acid in the potato are converted to energy…. That seems to be asserted in popular websites too. However this is false. Not that in the instructions for the classic potato battery, 2 different metals are used - for example, one steel and the other copper. The voltage is created by the two different metals connected by the wires (with a mini light bulb or LED) and electrolyte - the potato in this case is the electrolyte. So it’s better thought off as the potato electrolyte experiment though it doesn’t sound catchy. To do a quick check, try doing the same experiment with one type of metal only, and measure the voltage - should be close to zero, and voltage is low or zero so that even the LED would not light up.

This was a great video, until you forgot about Tesla Battery production. You named 3 companies in Solid State or other tech who will not be up and running in any kind of capacity until 2026. Tesla is making batteries in Fremont, they have a battery production facility in Austin and they are Building one in Germany, which does not count for the US, but it is a US company.
Tesla is working on 100GWh in production by the end of 2023. Global GWH was 286 last year, up 100%. So if Tesla can deliver on the US production by the end of 2023, they will be maybe 20% of the world EV batteries. Their plans are around 500GWH a year by 2025 and 3 TWH by 2030. Something like this.
Tesla is the only Car company that has contracts with more then 15 mines for metals. They are a battery manufacture and will be the largest in the world in the next 5 years.

Let's revisit the regeneration diagram for electric cars. What is the weight difference between 30%, 40% and 50% of the battery and a full size electric motor? For an one electric motor model, you can reduce its battery size by 30 to 50% and replace it with an electric motor solely dedicated for regeneration which can match the output with regulator-booster circuits. And by using super capacitors and inductors as initial energy storage, you can further reduce the battery capacity, thereby getting yourself out of the tunnel vision syndrome of needing more battery materials and lack there of. Dedicated electric motor for regeneration, super capacitors and inductors are far more inexpensive and intelligent solutions to the 'not enough' batteries conundrum. Furthermore, it is not difficult for the engineers to add one more inductance coil architecture to capture the kinetic energy adjacent to the electric motor or motors. This means you don't need all that much materials to build batteries and charging stations. I'm not sure how many more face-palms I can inflict on myself.

1. Supercaps lose power sitting around after a few days your car super caps with be significantly if not fully drained. Imagine you battery or fuel tank going empty just sitting there and people having to pay for the energy that depeleted itself.
2. They take up more room and/or provide less energy density than most high density li-ion batteries of the same size. Space and energy is a huge deal in auto industry.
3. Voltage change on super cap over time means you can only use supercaps for certain systems for limited time intervals.
Your "fix all solution" isnt really a fix all and requires a lot of trade offs in design/engineering of the vehicle. Auto industry is trying to stay out of that redesign right now and keep from losing package space to power systems. They dont want to give up package space for supercaps. Plus more super caps pushes the car to be only a city vehicle type car which industry doesnt want to shift to either.
In the future there will most likely be a mix of all diferent types of electric vehicles some city, some long distance, some in between. Meaning different battery chems and different levels of super cap usage.
Electric motors can create electricity or use electricity, one motor goes both ways. You just need a controller changing which way the energy goes. Most electric cars already do this “regenerative breaking.” This regeneration does not usually exceed the batteries ability to recharge, and they’re quite efficient so no capacitors necessary. So give yourself one more facepalm because everything you’ve said is already done more efficiently in cars we already have.

@@dcan4 EV's don't need them that much, my Prius has 120k miles on the original brake pads, it uses the motor to slow down the car and charge it, so its easier on other components, they also don't require oil changes or transmission fluid.
Ugh radioshack was a gem but they lacked the ability to properly advertise and adapt the same will happen to auto zone but it will be a slow phase out in my opinion but solar is definitely the way to go I have several solar chargers for my phone I even have two solar generators in case of a blackout. I was the only one in my building who was able to cook during hurricane Sandy I kept it to a minimum though I was able to keep lights on because I have blackout curtains

Tesla has received a total of $2.44 billion in subsidies since 2003. Oil and Gas substitutes only since 2017 are $649 billion. So lets cut all EV and Fossil fuel subsidies and see what is actually more affordable.
You assume this government is a homogeneous entity and not various departments with competing interest often beholden to special interest that may or may not align with EV. This is like thanking the private sector for finding a Covid vaccine in record time.

The lack of discussion of graphene aluminum ion battery as an alternative to these complicated lithium ion battery chemistries is sad. Would really like to see coverage of what Graphene Manufacturing Group and University Queensland is up to. Advantages over lithium ion include: massive power density increase (~60x faster charging); potential for much higher energy density; comparatively little concern with overheating or combustion; much simpler battery chemistry (carbon, aluminum, chlorine) which means easier to recycle, cheaper to source raw materials, and increased energy independence for everyone. All while being very compatible with existing lithium ion manufacturing processes.

i have always wondered why would we not just give every house hold a large storage battery like a tesla wall style starage battery, then everyone has their own system that will work to lessen the stress on the aging systems, they also wouldnt have to waste huge amounts of land building these stations

I think lithium ion is a great battery however I think it is more for portable type things I think the stationary is going to have to change because it's going to have to last a lot longer than 8 to 10 years ,people buy and not realizing that in 8 to 10 years they're gonna have to buy an expensive battery and then another 8 to 10 years the same thing so I so I don't think it's as consumer friendly as some people think , for starters yes it's going to work but I think in the long run things will have to change, the battery types will definitely have to change or I think they are in for big surpr I think flow batteries are key to our future they are cheaper to build cheaper to use maintenance is lower and last longer and have way more cycles and less issues issues , I think in a few short years these will be the battery to compare wish and I think they will be the battery that will be used for a long period of time

Great video but at 45:55 you left out the world's largest hard-rock lithium deposit which will be producing approx 160k metric tones very soon, 4x the production of Australia which you cite as the world's largest producer. Granted the Manono deposit (also in DRC) is not yet in production but initial site works have begun and it is expected to start production late 2023. Australian company AVZ Minerals is developing the project.

Gas taxes are not the cash cow you may think they are. As the fuel efficiency of gas cars got better the gas tax collected per car has gone down. Solar is the cheapest form of power generation now and as more renewables are put online with power storage the price of electricity will fall
