Color Correct LOG Like a Pro in Final Cut (No Conversion LUTs or PLUGINS)

This video is for FCPX - How to Color Correct and Colour Grade with NO Conversion LUTS or PLUGINGs. I also made this workflow for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, you can find those here:
►Premiere Pro: • Color Correct LOG Like...
►DaVinci Resolve: • Color Correct LOG Like...
Color correcting Canon EOS R & C200 C-Log or Sony A7 S-Log footage in FCPX cameras is actually much easier than you think. And with a tiny bit of knowledge you will be able to go from this… to this in about 1 min. Today I will show you how without any special plugins or LUTs.
When I do use a plugin for color correcting it's this one:
FCPX Color Grading Plugin: bit.ly/RafaelColorFinale
This technique I am using in this video will work in any editor that has color correction controls.
In this video we will talk about:
• How to set the exposure and contrast properly for Log Footage
• how to easily white balance with and without a color chart using the waveform.
• How to correct skin tone issues using the vector scope.
• How to check to make sure the skin tone is set to between 40 and 70 IRE and exposed properly.
• How to save the preset to use on all your footage.
• And how you will never have to ask for help again once you practice these steps
Full disclosure, I am not a colorist, for most of my client work I will gladly hire pros to be as precise as possible to grade the footage. However for smaller projects and my own personal work, I learned the steps required to quickly get from Log footage to a base grade without using LUTs or expensive plugins. I am still learning and tweaking as I go, but that's the nature of the creative field, it's always changing and improving.
So this isn't the be all and end all to color correcting C-Log (or any log footage for that matter), there are many ways to do the same thing. But it's a method I have found works really well to rough in a base grade and add some personality to it after.

In my opinion best tutorial regarding to color correct I have ever seen. I just watch, repeat and learn a lot, excellent guidance, thx Rafael.
Wow. I’ve seen lots of videos about this. Either too technical or trying to sell LUTS. This is by far the most useful I’ve found so far. Thank you! You have a new sub 😊
This is exactly why I made this tutorial! Thanks for watching and the nice comment Atreyu!
This is the best video explaining the myth of LOG I've seen after watching so many videos. Rafael this is great work, well done you :)
Wow, thanks for the compliment!
Rafael, This is the absolute best color correction for FCPX video I have ever seen! This was a God Send. Finally got my EOS R and wanted to take full advantage of the C-LOG, THANK YOU!
Wow, thanks!

So kind of you! Thanks for watching and the comment Michael!
Dude, amazing! You made it look so simple. I’ve been fiddling around for quite some time. I wonder why your video didn’t show up in my searches before. Too much not-so-good content on UA-cam. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the compliment! These videos are gaining traction slowly and YT is a Journey not a race so I have time ;)
Man!! This is the best video about this subject Ive seen!!! For 3 years I have been learning FCX and this just changed my game. You deserve the Million Subs. Thanks
Wow! Thank you for the compliment! Glad you found value in the video, that means a lot! I plan on earning those subs! Thank you for the comment, you made my day!
@@RafaelLudwig you will get more subs I'm due time. Perhaps slow down your pace a but for beginners? Just my w cents. I will apply your tips in my next video and share here. Hope that's OK
@@MR-AK Yeah for sure, I know I edit the tutorials a bit aggressively. Definitely will try to pace the edit more in future videos! Thanks for the feedback!
@@RafaelLudwig i have a Wealth building channel and I'm starting to take my videos to new level. I also get feedback that I move too quick on real estate videos. You see doing great.
This is an example of why the quality of content and the actual number of views can be inversely proportional. Very helpful! Going to go try this workflow right now. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate that! Thank you for the compliment and the comment Dave!
I'm shocked 10 people disliked your video, this video is beautiful, well edited, useful, clear, to the point, and taught me things I didn't know was possible. Thanks a million times. Thanks for also providing us with the actual practical information you said you would and not having a click bait video. I'm definitely watching this video again and some of your others.
Wow, thank you for watching and the compliment! I am editing my follow up to this video for advanced colorgrading in FCP (Without plugins and with colorfinale). It should be out tomorrow.
OHHHHHH. YAAAAAAAAAAA,
I learned more in that 17 mins than I ever have in the last 3 years. Thanks a mill Rafael, your a legend. Keep up the awesome work
Glad to hear it! It's not as scary as it first sounds, and soooo much easier than it should be! Thanks as always for the comments D!
This was the most approachable explanation of color correcting I’ve seen. Thank you for making this. I just tried it and my footage looks great already. You’re awesome

Wow! Thanks for watching and the nice comment! That is how I am planning my final cut course!
Just 5 mins in, and im learning loads already, i have to run off somewhere but ill be back dude. Cant wait to finish this off
Thanks Diarmuid! Glad I split this up into 3 video FCPX, Premiere, and Resolve - otherwise it would have been a beast of a video at an hour long! Thanks for the comment!😀
There is no better way to convey knowledge ! showing the same topic on different examples is ingenious, increasing the pace from image to image so that the workflow is memorized.
Wow! Thank you for this nice comment!
This Vid Solved My Aggression Towards FCPX Color system. Thanks dude!!
Great to hear! And yeah it’s a bit of a pain! Thanks for watching and the comment!!
many thanks, your descriptions are super clear and very helpful. Greetings from Poland :)
Thanks Rafael, straight to the point, this has been so useful C LOG with my R5
Thanks for watching and the compliment Chris!
Thank you so much for this, I was just throwing a LUT on my video and wondering why so much noise, this what I have been looking for.
Thank you so much Rafael, I've been creating videos on youtube for 3.5 years and now only starting to explore better quality footage. I use FCPX so this is extremely useful. Thanks a lot, dude!!! Subbed and gonna check out more. Stay saucy!
Wow! Thank you for watching and the super nice comment Darren!
Thank you so much for breaking it down like this. I finally fully understand the concept behind Rec 709 and LUT. Bravo!
Thank you very much, you are a very good teacher, you are clear and direct, I subscribe. Thank you again.
Nice job. Great job explaining color to FCP newbie

Awesome video man. This was the easiest to follow along and understand I've seen thus far.
Awesome, thank you for the compliment and for watching!
This is the absolute top advice. Many thanks!
Thanks for watching and the comment! Have a great rest of your day!
Sorry have to comment a second time . Just now try some of those tipps, and it is unbelievable what a difference does it give when I do this steps before adding a Lut/Filmconvert. So much more details and it just looks more natural. Thanks man really
Dude! Fantastic! SO so happy that it helps! Thanks again for the kind words!
LOL! I feel like a novice after watching this video! So much to learn and I LOVE IT! Thanks for the videos!
Second comment, lol... Well, I took the project I'm working on, which was a disaster as I have many things near skin tones in the background, and followed your video step by step and WOW 😳, I'm quitting the way I used to color grade and correct before FOREVER!!! Big thank you
So so good to hear! With a little bit of knowledge confidence goes through the roof! Looking forward to your next video!
A really pedagogic, smart, quick grading clog video. I suscribe!
Thank you for the compliment and the comment!
The better guide I found frome dozens of in the web so, many thanks Rafa!
Thanks for the compliment and the comment Dani!
you are amazing, wonderful mentor.
I am new to editing and was a little confused with color correction/grading. This video clarified many areas and gave me some great understanding to press forward. Thanks for the great video!
Excellent tutorial... cuts through the crap and goes straight into what can be done.
So glad you find the tutorials useful! Thanks again Federico!
I've been using FCP X for YEARS and didn't know most of this - super helpful and easy to follow, thank you!
Thanks! Using C300 MKII and Apple’s in built CLog3 Cinema Gamut REC709 is a dead match for the REC709 Proxi files which you can shoot at the same time with C300 MKII. Found in Resolve it was a nightmare to even get the footage to look accurate, as a starting point. Generally shoot how I want it to look so quick accurate conversion is lifesaver. Your way seems a lot easier than most I have seem! I miss FCP Studio from 2009. 😂
after 2mins watching... liked, subbed and saved in private playlist lol
Wow thank you for watching and the compliment Raf!
Ok, this was perfect timing. And thank you for that awesome and understandable definition of Rec 709 in the beginning and why we use LOG. I use FCPX and I shoot in Canon Clog2, and found this very helpful. As I continued to watch, I was got excited because Imlearning something new, and I looking forward to trying everything you are teaching.
It would be nice to watch more editing videos like this.
Very useful Tutorial. Well done! Thank you.

You can't imagine how much your video helped me. And also I can't understand how is that possible your video didn't hit 500k views already. Great job and examples. I will definitely use your tips. Thank you.
Rafael, I recently started a weekly coking channel and it was great to find your video, only 4 episodes in. I am shooting Log on my new EOS R and you helped me a ton on an issue that is very subjective and difficult to explain, for the most part. Great job! Thanks!
Thank you Gus! Make sure you also check out the video how to expose C-Log footage on the EOS R ua-cam.com/video/pM_q66KVNaU/v-deo.html - these two videos go hand in hand!

Thanks a bunch! This is great from a fellow FCPX user.
Practical clean and clear. Thx!
Thanks again Henrik for watching and the comment!
After watching, I think I'll try to start shooting c-log. Thanks for this great video on what's involved if not using a LUT
I love the look I can get from CLOG! Shoot in it gives YOU the control to shape the final image nicely! Thanks for watching and the comment Ricky!
Thank you so much for this TOTALLY underrated tutorial!! You are literally saving us $$$$$!
Thank you for the compliment and the comment! That is what this entire channel is dedicated to, saving time and money as a creative!
Clearest, information-richest guide I've seen yet to normalizing log footage. It's the Baby Bear version: not simple to the point of crudeness, and not complex to the point of wha? The use of scopes in particular suggests to me this is simplest approach a pro would take. Much appreciated, liked and subbed.
Great tutorial! I have just started video editing with Sony's camera, and this works perfectly too.
Yes it does! Thanks for watching and the comment Serge!
Great walk through - I'm seeing why your videos always look so stellar!

@@RafaelLudwig what can I do when I don‘t have a color chart? Can I e.g. use white and black points in my footage as a work around?

Awesome, thank you! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Total agree
Best explanation👍 thanks 🙏
This is absolute gold
Thanks for this one! just started in making videos and I switched from Pinnacle Studio to FCPX one month ago, I edited one music video with pinnacle and the color work was horrible XD. Now with Final Cut it looks pretty simple and effective.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Amazing video! Thanks so much for sharing. Been bashing my head against the wall with the LUT I'm "supposed" to be using...
You're so welcome! I felt the same way with the recommended Technical LUTs - all just made the footage look terrible! Thanks for watching and the compliment James!
brilliant video! thanks so much. Perhaps in the future you could make a color grading video for the most challenging light situations. I'm thinking very dark (night) or very bright scenes. I've been shooting wildlife either very early morning or late at night and found the whole c-log exposure a challenge in the first place. Again thanks for the work you've put in this video.
Hi! I've just started using Final Cut and your vids have really helped me set it all up so a big thank you for that. I like using the colour wheels for changing and enhancing my flat footage. Though I'm not sure how to add to all the film clips. So far doing each one which seems long winded! I'll get there. 🙂
You could use an adjustment layer, or create a compound clip and add the color correction to that one layer. You can get an adjustment layer in the description of this video: ua-cam.com/video/6oetjz1adh8/v-deo.html
@@RafaelLudwig Oh that’s great! Thanks for your help mate 😊
@@Morphaplasm 🤙tell Serge I sent ya!
Damn, clear and concise and no need for the extras. An excellent place to start. Thanks. I have not been shooting log but I will use the techniques for what I have and I'll start shooting in log.
Thanks for this video; very helpful 🙌
Glad it was helpful Hector! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Always interesting to see others workflow. good job!
Thanks Tony! Are you an FCPX or Premiere User?
Rafael Ludwig I’m a Premiere Pro. Been getting frustrated with it lately though.
After making these three videos doing the same thing in Resolve, FCPX and Premiere- comparatively PR felt well behind in basic functionality, just felt clunky and dated. If you don't need much collaborative workflow or AE dynamic link, Resolve is really really good. FCPX is the best for quickest in and output for personal work.
Rafael Ludwig ya, i wasn’t so invested in Adobe, I’d think about transitioning. I’t will be interesting to see what happens with Final Cut Pro with the iPad Pro for quick easy turnarounds. The ipad is incredibly zippy even with. 4K files, more so than even my high powered iMac. I think there’s potential to integrate FCP into that workflow so i could start a project remotely on the ipad and then finish it on my iMac.
Oh yeah! I am really looking forward to what is coming down the pipe with all this software!
This video has helped me soooooo much!! Thank you good sir!!
Great job, but I have to admit, it's hard to beat the look of the camera straight out. Those engineers know what they are doing.🙂 I may make a few slight tweaks on it, but I'm generally happy with the Sony look straight out of the Fx9 and 6.
This video was great to begin with and then you threw in that recap. So helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
Woooh! This is great! Just bought an Eos R for Vlogs, can’t wait to apply your tutorial to my c log footage 🙌

@7:16 WOW! Super simple (shockingly so), crystal clear (like my future footage), and freakishly fast! Super stoked I kept watching - I just clicked on this to comment about the clever title of this playlist and planned to come back later to watch! #SynchronicityStumble
PS As a photographer for almost 40yrs (who avoided digital post production, until I could no longer just covet the cool shit I was seeing + not use it) I love that your focus, based on your merch/ logo "Fix It In Camera", is not on Needing post production but using it effectively, efficiently, and when needed!
PPS I am also guessing you are a proud Capricorn? I'm raising a very strong-willed 9yr old Capricorn. It might drive me batty if she weren't an artist like her Gemini mama!😂
I shied away from color grading for a long time as well. Understanding the core concepts really helped for me. As a post and vfx supervisor, the running joke when someone on set would say we'll "fix it in post" was for me to say "no, fix it in camera" when it was something that would literally take 10 mins on set, and potentially days in post to fix.
Yes a capricorn through and through!
Thanks for watching and the comment!

Ok, excellent information. As a stills photographer I was used to programs that would create a profile from the color card. This is very helpful. Hey thanks for making this video I really learned a lot I’ve been struggling so much with log footage and I recently discussed with Sony the loss of detail and sharpness shooting in a log 3 and they told me it shouldn’t be any loss in sharpness of detail so thank you for confirming I’m not crazy
