Why It's So Cold Inside a Plane

  • Have you ever thought about how low the temperatures in the passenger cabin usually are? Is there an aeronautical reason for this suffering? One can think that by setting such freezing temperatures inside the plane, airline companies are just trying to help passengers acclimate to different weather conditions. After all, the weather might be way colder in the place they're heading to.
In fact, despite how ridiculous it may sound, chilly winds are blowing through the passenger cabin to provide you with maximum comfort! But what about the passenger cabin's dryness? Is this gripe unreasonable as well? And isn't that too cold for the animals that are transported in the cargo hold? Let's figure out!

    SUMMARY:
    - The temperature in the cabin isn't as cold as it may seem. It's normally kept between 71 and 75 degrees, and rarely drops lower than 64 degrees. In fact, that’s the average temperature in most office buildings.
    - Passengers tend to lose consciousness in the air more easily than on the ground, due to a special condition called hypoxia.
    - Just to be on the safe side, airline carriers prefer to keep temperatures in the passenger cabin a bit lower than normal.
    - Newer aircraft have more advanced thermostats, which can regulate cabin temperature more precisely.
    - The air conditioning on the aircraft is always turned off to save fuel until the plane leaves the ground. As a result, the combined body heat of all the people onboard, plus the absence of the air conditioning, can warm the cabin up to an uncomfortable temperature.
    - Even pilots admit that the average passenger cabin is incredibly dry and, thus, dehydrating. It has just 12% humidity, which is way drier than most deserts!
    - Many people are surprised to know that the hold is pressurized, just like the passenger cabin. On top of that, to air-condition the cargo hold, they use the same air as in the cabin.
    - If a plane is transporting goods that are sensitive to temperature, there are special cargo bins with temperature controls inside.
    - The exhaust from the plane is humid and hot, and when it mixes with the frigid air and low pressure at cruising altitude, the water vapor not only condenses, but can also freeze.
    - Contrails can vary in their thickness and duration, depending on the humidity and temperature of the atmosphere, as well as the plane's altitude.
    - Another surprising phenomenon you've probably witnessed is two planes flying nearby, but with one of them leaving behind a thick, long trail, and the other - an almost invisible one. The reason may lie in the fact that different planes have different engines.

I find that the cabin temperature is usually too high on most flights I go have on, even with the air vent turned on
Though I always thought the lack of humidity was done intentionally as a way to sell more drinks during the flight (similar to how indoor amusement parks always seem to be very hot, and conveniently, you can buy a bottle of water for $6.50)

The last time I was on a plane, it was a 6 hour flight. I had a crying baby right in front of my chair, I angry baby next to me talking to his dad that he hates ducks, and a baby behind me kicking me seat. Oh, and it was a overnight flight, and this happened ALL 6 HOURS. I tried to take a rest... impossible, watch TV, nothing on, and I was in the window seat cramped as well. I hoped you enjoyed my story!🤷‍♂️😀

    • @thatguyalex2835
      @thatguyalex2835 2 роки тому +1

@@_filipovicluka Actually, it does. Since it is so cold outside, the airplane heaters (powered by the engines) have to work extra hard to keep the plane warm (say 16-18 C). It is like trying to heat a house when it is -40° out. It is hard to keep the house above 15°C (60°F)

  • @johnh1001

From an Aerospace inspector : Aircraft fuselages are made of aluminum . This magnifies the cold . If you were to take for example a Bombardier Global express 7000 aircraft . The insulation in the fuselage walls is just regular light foam padding , believe it or not , only one half inch thick with a very thin layer of plastic covering it . That clear plastic covering would be about 1/4 thinner than the plastic bag on a regular loaf of bread . Figure that one out .

A specific airline I fly to Asia because the their business class prices, they like to keep the cabin hot and it makes it very uncomfortable to sleep. Even they seem to be running the A/C, but in a low fan setting, I discovered that since I was on Airbus A380 the storage bin was cold, so I took a pillow from a empty seat and would swap them as I got hot. It surprisingly worked and was able to sleep.

I stopped trying to figure out the coldness since I was a child. As an adult I noticed that when walking to the bathroom,I'm not as cold. Also knowing that I at times can't get a blanket, and their pillows are flat as a plastic bag😆,I carry a cap and thick jacket to cover long ways like a blanket, but if traveling in Winter,a thick coat and thick socks. I loose a lot of heat through my feet and they're not well.

4:44 My favorite temperature is hot only. I was flying to India in Late March, and I experienced some cold weather, which might be because of the temperature outside, which is horribly cold (-65 degrees F)! colder than the Arctic, Antartica, and Greenland! After that, once I opened the window, everything was very hot, which would be because the plane is hot with it's fuel and other stuff. It was also a sunny day outside at that time. (my flight was on the last Wednesday in March during the mid-day.)
Overall, I love to rather sit next to the isle, which I did while coming back from India. That helps me gain more comfort, and also looking at the entertainment screen camera is a lot better for me than looking out the window, because I get to see even the front side of the airplane, not only the sides. Also I get to see right below (when the plane lifts off, that is where I get to see the views more easily.)

It is not just on planes that it is cold. I have made two trips on ships of the MSC cruise lines. On both occasions I found that the public rooms were always cold. I once ask a steward why this was so, only to be told that we passengers could wear loose clothing but that staff had to wear heavy uniforms and so they kept the temperature down for their own convenience.
