Why Pilots Dump Fuel Before Landing

  • Picture this: you're nestled cozily in your window seat on a jet airliner when suddenly, you notice weird white spray coming out the back of the wing. Is something wrong with the plane? Are you going to crash? No need to panic! At this moment, the pilots are performing a standard procedure called fuel dumping.
    Btw, it's by no means cheap. For example, a mid-sized Boeing 737-300 uses about two and a half tons of fuel per hour of travel. The price of jet fuel is more than $600 per ton, so that means that while flying such a plane, you spend approximately $1,500 per flight hour. So why do they do that?

    #planes #aviation #brightside
    SUMMARY:
    - Most planes must be lighter when they land than when they take off, like more than 200,000 pounds lighter!
    - If a plane doesn't use a certain amount of fuel before landing, it might hit the ground too hard, which can lead to some serious damage.
    - From time to time, emergencies occur, and planes are forced to land way earlier than planned.
    - Few people know that most fuel is stored in the wings of an aircraft. That's why, when a pilot flips a switch in the cockpit, a sophisticated system of pumps and valves comes into action, and special nozzles in the wings let out excess fuel.
    - On the other hand, not all planes have this complicated system. For example, narrow-bodied planes like the Boeing 757 or Airbus A320 can't dump fuel.
    - But if the plane's construction allows it, pilots prefer to eject fuel rather than to risk people's lives.
    - Most fuel evaporates while still in the air and never hits the ground.
    - It may seem terrible from an environmental pollution standpoint. But here’s one bitter truth: one way or another, when planes fly up there, all the fuel ends up in the atmosphere anyway.
    - By the way, every plane must carry more fuel than is necessary just to cover the distance from point A to point B.
    - On December 29, 2014, Virgin Atlantic Flight VS43, bound for Las Vegas, took off from Gatwick Airport. Shortly after, the pilots realized that the plane's right-wing landing gear had gotten stuck and hadn't retracted.
    - After circling for several hours, the pilots finally ejected enough kerosene over the territory of southern England to return to Gatwick.
    - One of the reasons for locating fuel tanks in the wings is to lighten the aircraft's fuselage, which reduces the pressure on the wing roots.
    - If all the fuel was stored in the nose or tail of the aircraft, the center of gravity would change along with the fuel consumption, and it would mess with the plane's stability.

    I don't know that I'd describe this as a "standard procedure," exactly. Fuel dumping is unusual, and many commercial aircraft don't have the capability at all. Generally only the largest aircraft have the ability to jettison, and it rarely happens. In all the years I've been an airline pilot I've only dumped fuel on two occasions.

    You give the impression that the inability for smaller jets to dump fuel presents an inherent danger but they simply don't need to.
    In simple terms their max takeoff and landing weights are close enough that even an overweight landing in an emergency can be tolerated safely although there will be a thorough inspection afterwards.
    Even larger aircraft like the A330 or 767 may or may not have fuel dumping capabilities depending on options

    The video is wrong. Planes does not dump fuel during the flight. Levitation fuel is only consumed 80% of the fuel for take off purpose only. How it works is the fuel is filled in both wings and it's not a jet fuel, they are using rocket fuel in both engines. The rocket fuel is mostly liquid hydrogen which makes the plane easily take off from the runway, so pilots uses the term levitation fuel. Without levitation fuel, the plane will not be able to get off the runway into the sky. During your midflight travel from one city to the next, the plane is already on reserve fuel and consumed only 5% of the reserve fuel to make it to the next airport for them to land. That is why you don't see fuel dumping during your midflight and landing.
    Also, the video states certain information, some of them are inaccurate. Wings do bend during midflight travel which is why wings don't break. There is nothing about dumping fuel to make it lighter, the plane is already lighter after take off from the runway due to levitation fuel consumption.
    Finally, the plane's wheel are not impacted by the fuel. It doesn't matter if the plane has 80% fuel left, the wheel is fine regardless of the fuel intake. Wheels are made by different parts that doesn't break the wheel and its legs, it has nothing to do with fuel.
    If you are wondering about plane, do your research before you come up with your results before you make the video and this video is not cited properly so the information is full of inaccuracies. Always cite your work when doing the video on UA-cam.

    Only option was to dump fuel down to a safe landing weight. We still landed slightly overweight and the aircraft was immediately taken out of service for inspection.
    As an aside, most airports will have a pattern/area for aircraft to hold/orbit if they have to dump fuel.

    I was talking to a farmer who had a cornfield close to a major airport. One day, while inspecting his field, he found small yellow dots all over the leaves of a large swath of the corn. He was in his 60s, a lifelong farmer, and had seen just about every pest and crop disease around, but had never seen anything like this. He asked around to other farmers to see if they had any ideas but came up blank. He eventually called the Ohio State University's agricultural extension office in his county, and an agent came out. It turns out an aircraft had made an emergency landing a week or so before due to a medical emergency and had to dump fuel. The altitude they did it from was too low for the fuel to entirely evaporate, so droplets ended up drifting down onto the leaves and causing little pinpoints of damage where they hit. He said he thought he'd seen everything, but that day proved him wrong.

      you saw a fuel dump?
      sure cuz its not very commen it may be something else too so its a very low chanse its actually fuel dumping and did you land at a different airport cuz if you dumped fuel you probably landed at a different airport and in tht case your pilot would do a PA about the situation and tell the passengers that they cant go to there destination because of an emergancy did these things happen?

    its so easy answer,when landing there are many fuel left and makes the plane very heavy so they dump the fuel to light weight and land,too much fuel may break the landing gear

    • @aviationdude1
      @aviationdude1 3 роки тому

      Planes normally only dump fuel in an emergency because jet fuel is expensive and it can rain down on the land below

      If a plane dumps fuel, the Pilots will be trying to dump fuel at a safe altitude, meaning that the Fuel wont reach the ground. Also I don't think that dumping fuel is a nice method, a pilot will only dump fuel if they need to land earlier then expected.

    • @JamesSmith-xf1yb
      @JamesSmith-xf1yb 5 років тому +2

      That never happens. Fuel is dumped at a high enough altitude to evaporate.
