WOW!! This is great. I've been a fan of the group since just before PEOPLE LIKE US came out. You've presented the story with true interest AND kept the style sort of cut and dry. That's a hard trick to pull off, but you did - and thank you. If you know anything about drug culture and hormones, you can pretty much figure out what happened behind the scenes. Denny, Cass, John and Michelle were all massive talents. Their downfall was having the money to pay for their temptations. Liked and subscribed Mr. Sean!!

You are correct about too much money contributing to very bad habits. But from what I have read and heard when the $$ runs out, they just find other ways to carry on with those habits.
My first skate video used their song California Dreaming- back in the early 90s, when I was riding World Industries. I wish I could get my hands on the VHS tape, and others we(skate crew) made during our years at Key West High
Noted sir. I'll keep that in mind and will likely do that at some point now that it is requested! I appreciate you watching and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I've got the CD "Many Mamas, Many Papas". I remember, after seeing The New Mamas and Papas in 1982, waiting and waiting for them to release something. John was always writing new songs for them. For some reason, nothing was ever released. That is - until this compilation was released. All I can say is: the original is still the greatest!
Thank you very much! I have spent the last month studying a legendary filipino folk rock band called ASIN. I would love it if you check them out. I'm editing the video on then right now. They're fascinating. But I hope people will give them a chance... Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this! TMATP have always been one of my favorite bands! And Mama Cass has always been one of my favorite artists. And “Dancing Bear” has been one of my top favorites since I was first introduced to this amazing band! It’s too bad there was so much strife within it. BTW.... I luv your kitty!! He looks just like my late feline son! When he first came on screen, I said “Aaawwwwe look at that handsome boy!” The camera sure loves him! ❤❤❤
Yes. He is the most important little dude in my life. There was NOTHING in this world she hated more. Even bath day was a sinche compared to having to go for a ride in the car. Well we got there and she was so stressed out she had a cardiac arrest and she passed away right there in my arms.... I fell to the floor sobbing and weeping. Great commentary and delivery!! Thanks for the mention…it was an amazing experience and I am always forever grateful for the opportunity. There are some videos out there that I know exist so if you every find them let me know . One thing….John Denny Spanky and me did 4 Queens October 1986, a UK tour November 1986 and a slew of American shows through to April 1987. Mackenzie returned and came in and out frequently so I was able to fill in the gap for her. There was always the “what papa will show up” question each time I went out but for the most part John didn’t make his exit until 1992. I don’t know why Wiki and other sources have him leaving earlier for his illness and ensuing liver transplant! I have pictures…many tour pics with each configuration…John Denny Spanky Laurie, John Scott Spanky Laurie, Denny Scott Spanky Laurie. It was a swinging door for sure!! I have a band “Laurie Beebe Lewis & The Electric Underground” which features music of the 60’s including songs of groups I performed with Mamas & Papas, Buckinghams and more! ❤

Good work! I am a subscriber now. BTW, I am a big fan of the first side of "People Like Us" album. (The second side, uh I'm not so sure of). Thank you for mentioning the bass player. Awesome groove. He was a big part of the sound of that record. IMO.

I love that song too and had three days with a girl named Ivy that I was totally falling in love with but then she had to go back out of the country for work and I haven't seen her again. So I dedicate that to her. Thank you for commenting!
A lot of information indeed. I love this band’s history as well. You are right there are inconsistencies by even the band members themselves. If you have read John’s book “Papa John,” and Michelle’s book, “The Mamas and the Papas” they are inconsistent on the color of the car Lou Adler got them. Michelle said it was a White Buick convertible and John said it was black. Either way they named it Harold the Bleak. I never heard of them all living in a one bedroom apartment. Upon arriving in LA broke and no where to go, Michelle claims they stayed for a while at Barry McGuire’s house. While McGuire did in fact get them an audition with Lou Adler, another source claims they showed up at the door of Jim “Hendricks” and his girlfriend, Vanessa’s house in Laurel Canyon. Yes that is the Jim Cass Elliot was married to. They didn’t stay there very long. The gas and electric had been turned off and Jim and Vanessa were getting evicted. They then rented a suite at the famous Landmark Hotel, the hotel where Janis Joplin died 5 years later. The story goes that they checked into the Landmark in Sept 65. It was Cass’s Birthday and she cooked Duck A L Orange to celebrate. While Cass and John past out at the dinner table, Denny summoned Michelle out onto the Balcony. While Denny leaned against the next door over, they discovered it was not latched and opened. It was there that Denny and Michelle officially had an affair. Per Michelle, “on the wall to wall” There are also discrepancies over the car they drove to the Landmark. At any rate, it was stolen with most of their belongings according to Michelle. John said, it was a rented Mustang. Another source claimed it was one of Journeyman’s car. The credit card they used in St Thomas also belonged to the group, The Journeyman, not John’s personally. They moved out of the Landmark and into a 2 bedroom house on Flores St also gotten by Lou Adler. That is the house where the bath tub cover was shot for “If you Can Believe you Eyes and Ears” They called it the Green House. It was a dark olive green and in need of repair. John and Michelle had one bedroom, Cass had the second bedroom and depending which source you believe, Denny slept in the dining room or porch. After John caught them flirting and found out about the affair back at the Land Mark, John and Michelle moved out. They bought or rented a one bedroom bungalow in Laurel Canyon. Michelle would live there mostly by herself. John moved into another home with Denny. When John and Michelle reunited, they moved to a mansion in Bel Air. Denny bought a sizable home in Laurel Canyon once belonging to Mary Astor. Cass bought her second home in Laurel Canyon, the first on Stanley Hills, the second on Woodrow Wilson once belonging to Natalie Wood. Cass did get hit on the head with some sort of piping at Duffy’s Acvordong to Michelle it did not change her vocal range and was a mere excuse of John’s to accept her into the group.
Thank you for the great comment and all the information here! It is likely that I will make a new version of this video in the future and perhaps I'd like to chat with you further. Sorry for the lateness of my reply, I have been in The Philippines learning about a band here and have been super busy. I wanted to take the time to leave you a quality reply that addressed most of what you're talking about, but I feel I just keep putting it on the backburner and would like to at least thank you and say hello. Hope all is well with you. Thank you again for all this information! I spent way more time researching the Mamas and the Papas than I had expected, and though I very much enjoyed it, I get a more rewarding feeling from researching bands that are more obscure, so that is my focus right now. My next topic is a Filipino group called Asin, they are absolutely fascinating and basically everyone in the Philippines over the age of 25 is aware of them and their impact on the culture. Their songs were chanted in mass during their 1986 revolution. I had the honour of meeting the founding member and spending three days with him. That's what I was doing when you left this comment. Thanks again! Cheers!

Thank you so much for watching and leaving a kind comment, Collin! I really appreciate it! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video so thoroughly! I'm never sure if people want any of my opinions. But it feels more natural to speak from the heart instead of just telling the story. Thanks again!
You can hear Mama Cass's voice on the album People Like Us on The Mamas & The Papas - Ultimate Anthology 2016 version. I uploaded People Like Us and it includes Mama Cass's voice please listen to it, it's a gem.
Hey, another good one, Sean! Although I'm not sure it's worth all the effort in trying to unravel this group's history. Sheeeeesh..... You mentioned that they headlined the Monterey Pop Festival. Well, that was because John was the guy behind it. With the other acts on the bill being rockers, and Otis being like an friggin' explosion, no one was really geared up for the sweet pop sounds of the M&P. The film of the event, of course, was edited to not reveal that. I don't know if you were ever interested in The Grateful Dead, but for many years "Me and My Uncle" came up every few days in their live shows. John Phillips wrote it and was surprised to hear that he had. One messed up dude. Nah....you're too young for the Dead experience, I think. I got to know Denny for a while when he was doing his TV show. I was on it two or three times, and we kinda hit it off. He may have been the most sane of the bunch. His story of the M&P doesn't quite mesh with yours (big surprise, huh?). Although I was around for The Great Folk Scare, I never got to see The Journeymen or any of the early outfits these people were in. Well, Barry McGuire I saw a couple of times with The New Christy Minstrels, but I think that's about it. He was a good frontman. Really got the crowd involved in singing, "Green, Green." Maybe the others just never came up north, where I'm originally from. I feel like I missed out, having heard them on record. I saw the later incarnations a few times, including the version labeled "John Phillips presents The Mamas and The Papas," which did not include John Phillips. They were all pretty good, but they were just a so-so imitation. Especially having seen and loved the real thing several times a few decades earlier. OK, one last thing. You mentioned that you wouldn't mind an instrumental version of one of the albums. YES! As far as I know, The Wrecking Crew never put out a record on their own. Should have. The best of the best in that era of music!! Thanks again, Sean!
Haha, time will tell if researching them for hundreds of hours was worth it. Haha, so far I feel like it wasn't... I did have a good time though. I believe I mentioned in the video that John was one of the guys who was behind the Monterey Pop Fest, but now you're making me doubt it and want to watch my video to see. I think you're right that I'm too young for the Dead experience. My guitarist and I rag on them for not being as daring as we were with our project, Fasba Fpel. We prefer Fasba Fpel. OH wow! That's awesome that you were on Denny's Sho, I assume. Very very cool. What do you do? I'd love to see/hear any art/music that you've been a part of! Thanks again for the great comment and all your support!
@@SeansMusicHunt Yeah, you probably did mention John's involvement in Monterey. You packed so much info into this that I can't be expected to remember EVERYTHING!!! These days, I find myself walking into a room and forgetting why. Denny had two TV things going at the time and one was a sort of variety show for kids. I don't do kids magic, but I CAN if necessary. That was a long time ago, but I was performing at a convention or something somewhere in Canada and someone involved in TV approached me. Always hustling connections, I went for it, although I never heard from that guy again. The rest I can't remember, but Denny was the one who wanted more, mainly because we liked each other despite the age difference. For some reason, I've always been able to be friends with people both older and younger than me. I'm older now then Denny was then. Scary thought. I'm a recently retired mentalist who focused on corporate events. NOT kid stuff!!! After a calendar of nothing but cancellations (the COVID years) for a year and a half, I decided that 40 years of it was enough. I was one of the young hotshots once. Now it's somebody else's turn. I hope you're enjoying your adventure! I have a friend near Manila. After an impoverished youth (actually, over three decades), she is now in what we would call the middle class after spending many years getting a bottled water business off the ground. It's still a local biz at this point, but it is a success story. Cheers!
It's all there in the music I saw her again is one of my favourites their story reminds me of the movie a mighty wind abba got their start in a similar way in Greece in the late 60's maybe minus the drugs
Excellent presentation. The Ms and Ps tend to be neglected for various reasons, and your balanced presentation helps clarify the qualities that made them a great band with something important to contribute.
Okay, Steven! I could do that for you! Shouldn't be too tough! Thanks a ton for watching my Mamas/Papas video! I really appreciate you checking it out!!
😂 that's may be my favorite part of the video. Thank you for pointing it out and thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed and subscribed! You're awesome!
So I liked this video but was disturbed by how you said Michelle "wore down" John when he was married to his first wife. That strongly implies that she was the aggressor but she would have been a teen and he was 10 years older. Did you find in your research that she was aggressively pursuing him?
That is what I remember reading, and I get how it would likely be the other way with a typical male/female relationship, especially with what we know of John from later in his life. But also, he was a star in her eyes and women often try to get the highest ranking man available to them. I can see it going either way. I have a disclaimer at the beginning about how the stories are all jumbled, would be interested if you could find a different side of the story. Glad you enjoyed the video though! Hope you have a lovely evening or whatever time of day it is.
Love the Mama's and the Papa's. I saw the interview with John Philips first wife. She dragged Michelle into the ground recalling how brazen Michelle that homewrecker was in pursuing her husband. She used those words and was still obviously hating on Michelle. It was an interesting interview for sure.
Wasn't Michelle only 17 when she got involved with Phillips? Only about a month passed being 16, in fact. According to what scientists now know, her brain wasn't even properly formed at that age, much less her emotional maturity (it's why the UK has recently banned marriage under the age of 18). IMO, she wasn't the one to blame for that marriage break-up; I think she met and got groomed by a predator. I have every sympathy with Susan's bitterness and how she focussed it on Michelle ... but ultimately she was lucky to have John Phillips off her hands.
Sorry I didn't reply right away. I guess because I wasn't sure if you're correct or not, I wasn't sure what to say. Part of me wanted to do more research on the subject, but I have too much going on. I hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers!
Chuck herer - Cool schedule of info. You might want to consider lessions of the vocal kind. We all are able to become us more. Fill out. Coaches are almost always used. J. Dean, others.
I'm not sure if this comment is an insult, a compliment, sarcasm, or a mix of the three. Haha. But thank you, I hope. And thank you for watching the video. I did use wiki, but mostly to find the sources that the page links to. A lot of those were books that you can fortunately read online. I also watched many other videos about the band online, listened to the albums over and over, and used Discogs.com to confirm information about the releases. I looked at every biography on the band that I could easily find and found tons of contradictions throughout. I hope you enjoyed the video. Again, I appreciate you watching and commenting.
This video certainly didn't give me the same fulfillment as others. Since most of the videos I do are on more obscure bands that need the recognition. Truth is that someone requested it over and over. And as the intro to this video points out, no other video seemed to tell the story correctly, so I attempted to make one that would be more factual than the others. I guarantee this video had more information packed into a smaller timeframe than any other video on the group. I have not seen any other videos mention their only single that is not on an album, nor several other things that I talk about in this video. To an extent, I agree with you. Because my passion is to tell stories that aren't told as often. I hope you enjoy some of my other videos on bands like COMUS, Harmonium, and Serum Giran. Those ones were definitely far more satisfying to create. Cheers!
Denny was the cousin of a schoolmate of mine. Met him numerous times at Rita's house. Saw the Mamas & Papas playing in Halifax. Enjoyed their music.

Many many years ago, I had my two babies,,,, the one who looks exactly like your boy,,, and I had his sister, Natassha. Well one day Natassha was having a hard time breathing, so the next day we took her to the vets. This was very very stressful for her, as she HATED HATED HATED the car.... There was NOTHING in this world she hated more. Even bath day was a sinche compared to having to go for a ride in the car. Well we got there and she was so stressed out she had a cardiac arrest and she passed away right there in my arms.... I fell to the floor sobbing and weeping. I returned home and picked up my boy and held him so close. After a while I turned on my CD player and the very first song that played was “No Salt On Her Tail” ..... “ ......This little bird,, she can fly away. No salt on her tail, no cage to make her stay.
It was like her soul singing to me, and ever since then that song is special and sacred. That’s Natassha’s song! 😓
Definitely going to subscribe! Happy a safe trip home!

Cheers!

Thank you so much for watching, Alex! I'm stoked that you enjoyed it! Hope you learned something new!
Cheers!

their story reminds me of the movie a mighty wind
abba got their start in a similar way in Greece in the late 60's maybe minus the drugs

John also had an incestuous relationship with his daughter
Wasn't Michelle only 17 when she got involved with Phillips? Only about a month passed being 16, in fact. According to what scientists now know, her brain wasn't even properly formed at that age, much less her emotional maturity (it's why the UK has recently banned marriage under the age of 18). IMO, she wasn't the one to blame for that marriage break-up; I think she met and got groomed by a predator. I have every sympathy with Susan's bitterness and how she focussed it on Michelle ... but ultimately she was lucky to have John Phillips off her hands.
Oh what a tangled web we weave…I won’t say any more…wouldn’t know where to start

I did use wiki, but mostly to find the sources that the page links to. A lot of those were books that you can fortunately read online. I also watched many other videos about the band online, listened to the albums over and over, and used Discogs.com to confirm information about the releases. Yes, so I've been told and I should have looked into it more before stating it in the video
Why have you done a video that's been done a 1000 times before. Its a just long line of regurgitated sound bites.
