Story of CARMEN | Documentary on early Flamenco Prog Rock
Full history of American/English band Carmen.
Flamenco and progressive rock first came together in 1970 with the formation of the band Carmen. David Clark Allen and his sister Angela Allen were the children of famous entertainers who ran a flamenco nightclub in Los Angeles where the band first performed under the name Los Angeles. Joined by Roberto Amaral and John Glascock they moved to London in 1973 where they met drummer, Paul Fenton and quickly got signed to a record label with.
David Bowie invited them to appear on Midnight Special and they recorded 2 albums with production by Tony Visconti, "Fandangos in Space" and "Dancing on a Cold Wind" before going on a long tour in the US. They opened for Jethro Tull on the last few months of the tour then when the tour ended and funds ran out, they settled in Massachusetts, recorded a final album, "The Gypsies" and ended the band in 1975 due to stacking difficulties including a major injury. John Glascock joined Jethro Tull before his unfortunate death in November of 1979.

Hi Sean! It really makes me feel very very good when I see other people around the world who are passionate about the music of Luis Alberto Spinetta. I met him during the pandemic, and because I was so caught up in his music, today I have a bass and electric guitar so I can play his chords. So much so that my youngest son, since he was 9 years old, is passionate about his music and is now studying and playing bass. Greetings from Paraguay!!

Hey this is an awesome video shedding light on a brilliant band. I do want to correct one small thing. "I'm Dead", the freakout jam you talk about at 2:35, was actually one of the first things recorded by the original lineup of the Flowers in 1969. It was recorded for Toshi Ichiyanagi's experimental album "Opera "From The Works Of Tadanori Yokoo" which was released commercially that same year. The album is impossible to get on vinyl and it sounds very different from the Flowers other output so that may make sense as to why its often attributed to the later Flower Travellin Band. But that is definitely Katsuhiko Kobayashi on pedal steel on that jam, and he left Japan in 1970 which is part of why Uchida reformed the group.

Well, this comment is certainly making me want to get back to work on it. I haven't been motivated to work on UA-cam lately. Playing bass and my band Fablewake has been my priority lately and I'm bummed that my videos on Argentine bands don't perform well and do far I've only had one supporter give me any $tips. Not that I'm doing it for money necessarily, but when a day only has so many hours and these videos can take over 100 hours each, it's often hard to feel like it is the best thing to do with my time... But I definitely intent to eventually make both Invisible and Spinetta Jade. Your comment has been on my mind for the last 24 or so hours though and is sort of motivating me to get to work.

    • @someguymakingvideoz9854

@@SeansMusicHunt Wow that means a lot! But yeah I was surprised to see that the Spinetta bands are relatively unknown in most English speaking countries, especially seeing other Argentine rock bands like Serú Girán and just foreign prog in general is gaining traction online. I'm pretty sure you're the only English-speaking person on UA-cam who even makes in-depth videos about Spinetta's music, which are easier sources of information compared to scrolling websites with poor translators. Despite this, I really don't want you to feel any pressure from my comment to keep doing UA-cam. As someone with a small music UA-cam channel (obviously not this account haha) which I've also somewhat put on hold, I can completely relate to the feeling when you spend all day working on a video, putting in so much effort, only for it to get 50 views in 2 days - and even that is generous for me. I've yet to check out your band, but I've listened to your originals and I really enjoy them. If making music brings you the most joy, you should definitely just do that instead. But if at some point your motivation to make UA-cam docs comes back to you, I would be excited for any new content. Wish you luck on your ventures with Fablewake!

@@someguymakingvideoz9854 I will definitely continue the channel, the passion comes and goes. It's usually when I'm in between videos that it is really hard for me to get going on the next one. But it definitely makes me feel like I'm contributing to the world. Obviously, there is already sooooo much music out there that playing music is just for the enjoyment of playing it. No one NEEDS to hear music from me, that's for sure. But as you said, I'm the ONLY person talking about certain subjects online, so even if the views aren't there, it is still rewarding to know that I made a video that even just a few people got a lot of value from. Even if you are the only person to watch the Invisible video all the way through, though you certainly won't be, it'll still feel rewarding to make and I'll get to be proud of the time I spent. You know how it is, our feelings flow like a tide. For the last few weeks, I've been considering taking on one of three topics, one of them being Invisible. I'd already somewhat started on it before and two days ago I pulled up my notes. But it didn't grip me at the moment. I think somewhat because I already basically know the story and it feels more like work than something that curiosity is drawing me towards. So I looked up The Crazy World of Arthur Brown because I've been curious about that and it seems there is some interesting stories there and I got super sucked in. So I think that'll be my next video. I'll definitely return to Invisible and Spinetta Jade in the future though. Thank you very much for the support. What is your other channel?

@@SeansMusicHunt Great to hear that you're thinking of making more content! I know the basic story of Invisible but I don't know all the details or the context surrounding the bands formation or disbanding. I've never heard The Crazy World of Arthur Brown but upon looking up the band and Arthur Brown it seems like there's quite a story to tell haha. There's all these oddball bands or duos like Flo and Eddie that have these really fascinating histories that crack me up. Oh yeah my other channel is called IsaacRossMusic, I usually uploaded covers and occasionally original music but ironically my most low-effort video (for lack of a better word) is a backing track I especially made for a solo I did on Insta a while back so I uploaded the backing track and it somehow it got lots more traction than my other vids. The reason I stopped uploading is because my audience likes guitar solos and covers which always take a while to film and edit. And there's only so much you can do with that type of stuff.

    • @SeansMusicHunt
      @SeansMusicHunt Місяць тому

@@someguymakingvideoz9854 I think you should definitely keep making your guitar videos, but you may want to consider ways of lowering your work load. You are editing different shots and stuff but you can just use one camera without so much video editing. And just make sure you're doing it for fun and not to fulfill a schedule or an algorithm's demands. Just create when you feel like it. That's basically how I'm operating my channel at this point. I'll make a video and then I'll allow myself to enjoy other aspects of life. Until this can somehow ACTUALLY be a full time job that pays me, I'm not going to treat it like one and hope it pays off in the future. There are times that I know that if I work constantly, it'll be way more likely to become a full time job. But I just want a happy life and I really don't like being at the computer constantly.

You must defently check Tripes and Metro Decay also from Greece (but they sing only in Greek). They have put out some real masterpieces of rock music (Tripes are art rock with alternative and many post punkish elements, and Metro Decay are more post punk/new wave but both have their unique character and sound ) "Tripes" is one of the most underrated rock bands ever (they are almost unknown outside of Greece) In Greece they are legendary and especially in the 90's. They were formed in 1983 in Thessaloniki. At that time there was a strong good underground post punk scene in Thessaloniki. Fear Condition is another great post punk band of that era from Greece (check them also). Their first album (the only one released, despite the not good recording - it is a cult underground gothic post punk rock masterpiece) There are many more. All of the bands mentioned here have some phychedelic elements but can not be categorised to classic phychedelic rock. (Now i show that you are more on classic phychedelic rock on your channel, but maybe anyway may interest you )

I just discovered your videos last night. You are so funny and I appreciate all your research. I have been exploring music from Argentina, Uruguay and other places in South America for the past year and love it all so much. Would love to see a video about Charly Garcia or Soda Stereo!

Hello! Thank you for watching and commenting. I actually have 3 videos about Charly Garcia. Starting with Sui Generis. I have not gotten around to doing his solo career. Thank you again very much! I hope you explore more on my channel!

@ Yes! I watched the Seru Giran last night and came back for more. Clics Modernos was my most played album this year next to Artaud. He is a character to say the least.

@SSFBITD they're both characters for sure. 😂 Love them. Clics Modernos is great for sure. Seru Giran became one of my all time favorite bands I wish they had more albums together

I took a music business class with Volman as the instructor. "You know what thrill it is to get a phone call in the middle of the night from the Salt Lake City Police Department asking you to come down and identify your guitar player who died after falling out of the hotel's second floor?"- Mark Volman. This is one of the things I remember him saying in his classroom.

Why didn't Mark and Howard start a new band with a different name? Maybe a Turtle member or two would have joined them. Hard to believe the two couldn't find a label and reputable agent after all they had accomplished in a relatively short period of time. Seems that they had the name recognition and resumes to do it. By any name, the Turtles concept died way too soon.

That's a great question, my personal assumption is that they didn't have the confidence or strength to be leaders again so soon after all of the management difficulties. Sorry for the late reply, Thanks for watching!

Huge Flo and Eddie fan here, indoctrinated in either 71 or 72 when my older sister bought live at the Fillmore East. I was a 10 or 11 year old, racing home from primary school to jump in the beanbag, put headphones on and trip out to the mating call of the adult male mudshark. ....i was also naturally very musical, learning piano, and understood i was perhaps listening to genius.

I'm in that same boat, my friend. I'm not sure if I mentioned in the video, but this is possibly the only album that even after listening to the entirety, I feel like I want more of it so badly that I can just listen to it again immediately. I NEVER listen to any other album twice in a row if I've heard it more than a dozen times, but whenever I'm in the mood for Artaud, I can put it on repeat. Crazy Thank you for watching and commenting!
