We rented a PRIVATE ISLAND in Finland! (for under $200/night!)
We lugged our gear on a sled across part of the frozen Lake Ivalo and for three days we stayed on a private island in an off grid cabin. And when we say off grid, we truly mean it! In the winter, there is zero electricity, lights, or running water. But what you lack in luxury, you gain in solitude, silence, coziness, and simplicity.
🏠BOOK this cabin: www.loueliving.com/contact-8 (the owner Köpi says the best way to book is to fill out the contact form. This avoids any Airbnb fees!). You can see availability for the cabin here: www.airbnb.com/rooms/28190724

Love your travel to Finland.
I've seen other travelers go to Finland, but no one has done it. The way you guys have and the winter, thank you very much.
@@candycornett5061 We are so glad you've enjoyed our Finland series so far!
I was thinking that I'd like to have the link to get to those cabins .... and at EXACTLY that time you said it would be in a link below.
You two are troopers ... I would not be dipping in the freezlng water or rolling in the snow !!
@@kebeaux6546 It's still a wonderful experience even without the icy dip!
@@AdventuresofAplusK
I would definitely enjoy the quieter side of Finland -- in a the only cabin on an island, that sounds perfect!
Now this is something... all other foreigners out there who are planning a visit in Finland, this is how you should do it. Forget Rovaniemi Santa Claus Park, Kakslauttanen luxury Norther lights igloos and all those touristy reindeer and husky farms that 98 to of 100 tourists do. Book your own cabin instead, far away from everything. I really appreciate A+K for this video, this is far more realistic Finnish/Lappish experience that you can ever achieve in tourist destinations.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to us!
I felt the same about A&K when they visited northern Canada and Yukon on the way to Alaska. They do it right. Travelers, not tourists.
@@AdventuresofAplusK You absolutely did. I doubt half of the Finns your age could do what you did. But that's the authentic thing.
So sad you were not lucky enough to see the aurora. I've seen them multiple times, but I cannot ever formulate a thought as to what seeing them means to me. Besides awe.
you guys earned some Finnish street cred with this vid
Yes! That means a lot to us!
@@AdventuresofAplusKAbsolutely. Many citizenship requirement boxes checked! ;D
I was just about to say that. This is really impressive, you went full in on the experience.
The most impressive part was how she didn't just run directly back into the sauna after getting out of the water but stayed around to film.
Kudos for having your sauna debut in the winter in an old fashioned real mökkisauna (cabin sauna) that you heated yourself without unnecessary luxuries like running water. This gives you the right to secretly judge all the UA-camrs that have visited Löyly or some other modern design sauna spectacle (nice though they can be). Glad you're enjoying our country.
😂😂 love it! This is exactly the experience we wanted! We were so pumped and excited when we booked this months ago! We thoroughly enjoyed Finland and can't wait to visit again! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Next time in the summer?!
@@sket179 Absolutely!
Nice story, good editing, super brave foreigners
Huge respect for you guys. I know spending a weekend in an off grid cabin is quite mundane for us Finns and usually the tourists we see are jumping around the touristy attractions. What you guys did got you more closer to what being a Finn is about. Silence, peace, nature and good simple food. Thanks for visiting Finland.
That means a lot to us to hear that! We had a wonderful and refreshing experience. Thanks and thanks for watching!
when you realize that less than 5% own a off grid cabin in Finland.. its a rich people thing.
@@grimmow187 off the grid is optional for this type of experience. Many cabins are very remote from population centers, and the main difference is having electricity and sometimes running water. These types of cabins are quite common, and even for those who don't own one they're relatively affordable to rent for a few days.
Love how you pronounse sauna correctly 😘 You have more balls going in the lake than most Finns! Love it!
YES! haha Thank you!
Oh yes, the pronunciation caught me off guard, a chef's kiss.
Most folks have no idea what total quiet "sounds" like -- experienced it in Monument Valley, and it was one of the most profound sensations ever! It's startling, isn't it?!
Yes it really was a startling feeling! You hear nothing, which I suppose is its own sound!
I hear it every day
Most of us finns love the silence. Peace and quiet is something i just can't live without.
As a native Finn, huge respect for you! I am glad you had the courage to take the leap and experience the "true" finnish way. While it's nice to have electricity and modern conveniences, nothing can truly beat going to mökki (the cabin) and just be. It's the way our fathers, grandfathers and every father before them did. You feel more connected to nature and, if you're lucky, you can learn more about yourself.
Enjoy the silence, and the world around us. And at the end of the day, go to sauna and wash all the worries away. It's the finnish way.
Glad you got to experience it, and hopefully you had a wonderful time!
That means a lot to us!
It was a very rewarding and fulfilling experience! Can't wait to do it again!
I am happy you got to experience this. Much more original way to experience Finland than glass iglus!
We agree! While those look fun, we really wanted to experience Finland in a different way than most visitors.
So over rated
This is the most authentic Finland vacation I have yet to see on youtube, very nice 👍 The only thing missing was maybe some skiing
That means a lot to us! Thank you and thanks for watching!
This video is the best !! And you indeed have SISU in your soul. Dipping in frosen lake , icefishing in harsh weather... But in one point at video i heard something good ; Slow down and relax. Why i liked this video is that i have slowed down and relaxed same way. And i will do it again. So thank you for this !!!!👍👍👍
Yes we need a lot more of that slowing down and relaxing stuff in our life. That's one of our themes for the year! Here's to hoping we can accomplish it!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Love how well you did your research on what to do and how to dabble with the Finnish ways 😄 I've seen too many videos like this where someone just sits in a cold/lukewarm sauna or barely tries any local foods
We wanted to get as much of the experience as we could! It was so fun and exactly what we were hoping for! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great video guys. - Heh, during the war time, in 1942, a Finnish magazine organized a public competition on what the readers thought "sisu" meant. The winner was an 11-year-old boy who was awarded for the definition: "Sisu is when you get beaten and you don't cry." The following suggestions were also awarded: "Sisu is continuing fighting with a knife sheath when your puukko (= a traditional Finnish knife) is broken." and "Sisu is the feeling that makes you to try to go for the third time into a restaurant where you've already been kicked out twice." 😜
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that!
One of your best adventure videos yet, the quiet, the cold, the cabin, perfect!!!!!!
Thank you! ❤
There is nothing like a cabin in a frozen woods. I love it! And you’re so right, the quiet is so nice.
We are definitely going to need to find more winter cabins in the woods!
Minnesota has a few @@AdventuresofAplusK 😉
As a finn totally agree this
I've never been off grid on a cabin. But I have hiked many of the finnish nature parks and camped out. I don't know what it is about the fire but being completely away from everyone, sitting in silence watching and listening to the crackling sound of an open fire... I miss that. Haven't done trips like that in many years. I'm hopeful that when my kids grow older I get to share that with them and that they feel it as powerful as I do.
We totally agree! We want more of it in our lives as well. Thank you for watching!
I’ve followed you guys for three years and it’s so bizarre seeing videos from my own country, on the ferry and on the trains and eating Finnish food 😂😍 I’m so glad you’re enjoying it and I hope you’ll consider coming back to the Nordic countries for summer, it’s as (if not more) gorgeous then! Lots of love from the Åland Islands 🇦🇽
100%!!! We are dying to visit Norway in the summer and we really want to visit northern Sweden and come back to northern Finland (especially this cabin!) as well. Oh and thank you for following along for so long, we appreciate it ❤
That was AMAZING! Good for you for going sauna and dipping in the lake and snow!! You are living my dream. I made it to Finland 22 years ago. It was the best vacation of my life. Unfortunately, I didn't get that far north. Thank you so much for filming and sharing your journey. Perhaps I'll make it back one day...Darcy from Wisconsin
We hope you can make it back one day! It was such a rewarding and fulfilling experience! Thanks, Darcy!
Finland has loads of summer cabins that are remote, in solitude and sometimes bit offgrid so that is true finnish experience! Really doing the best finnish things there are!
That's what we've learned! It was an amazing and fulfilling experience! Thank you for watching!
Very cool. As a finn who doesn't dip into water unless its above +20 Celsius, I have to say you are brave. Not every or even a majority of finns dip into an icy lake.
Thank you! We LOVED it!
True, we Finns do not like to swim in icy waters! Only those few sporty ones. Come to Finland during summertime and enjoy swimming in a lake! That is enjoyable. Thank you for your video! Greetings from Finland
One of the best adventure videos I have seen in years. Thank you guys for exploring and trying things as they are meant to be experienced. That cabinet in the corner with some board games, books etc. is so Finnish cottage coded, brings back a lot of memories.. Can´t wait for summer and cottage season to be here.
We're so happy we got to have this experience!
About the wintery silence...
Naturally all the migratory songbirds have buggered off to Africa etc. months ago so there's no birdsong (maybe the occasional raven etc), but the secret ingredient to that winter silence is the snow. It dampens and absorbs sound waves.
Makes sense. Thanks for sharing!
@@AdventuresofAplusK an Arctic fir forest with a foot or more of powdery snow is like the lake turned up to 11. Ground is the same but there's lowhanging braches all around also covered in snow. It's an eerie soundscape
I really like how you got there, you abled yourselves to survive there, and you did extra activities to sustain yourselves in your stay in your cabin space. My dream.
It was a very rewarding and fulfilling experience! Thank you and thanks for watching!
About winter fishing... fish spent time in deep part of lake near bottom, and if there is any fishes they attack in few minutes. If not it is time to drill other hole, people often drill 10..25 holes during day until spot is found, then yoou can pick 10..50 fishes from one hole.
Ah ok! Thanks for sharing! I'll know for next time!
I absolutely loved this video!! It's one of my all-time favorites by you both. You should do more videos exactly like this one! Any thoughts on where you would like to do a similar video like this?
We’d love to do more videos like this! The hard part is they aren’t the cheapest to produce. When we’re in the US we can stay for free in our van and we only have so much time and budget to travel internationally.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
This was a very authentic Finnish way to spend a few days in a cabin. Just add bird watching/photography to that and that's basically my life. Some may find it boring, but I feel very alive that way. How did you sleep after having a nice sauna and cold dip experience?
It wasn't boring to us at all! We could have stayed much longer!
We slept amazing! Can't wait to have this experience again one day
Yeah, like lot of people have said. This really was the way to experience finnish winter. Doing all the fun things there are during winter for normal finnish family.
It was a special experience for us! Can't wait to do it again one day
True relaxation comes after.. when sauna and icy water has straighten your veins and blood has circled.
Have to say, this video's headline could very well be "Guide to the true Finnish experience" so other travellers could try something like this in the future. Well done.
Oh that means a lot to us! Thank you and thanks for watching!
We loved the experience and can't wait to do it again one day!
You did have a perfect traditional finnish experience :) This is what every foreigner should do when they come to finland, as this is really popular time to spend time in Finland. Be it summer or winter, go to the cabin
We highly recommend it! It was very special. Thanks for watching!
One of the best travelling vlogs ever.
Thank you so much!
24:22 I was a bit scared for you shins there, gotta keep your feet apart!
Yeah, came to the comments right after the intro clip showed this, to see if anyone had mentioned it. Especially in a remote area you have to be extra careful even with the mundane stuff like chopping wood.
Rookie mistake! Thanks for the tip!
What a great adventure! Finland is so different than what we experience in the U.S. The cabin was amazing! 👏
Yes it is wayyy different! It was such a rewarding experience!
The sauna. Adam..."my chest and chestnuts hurt" 😂
😂😂
Kiitos! Your video is probably the most authentic tourist experience in Finland I have ever seen on UA-cam or anywhere else. What you got to do is normal around here and what most Finns do at their private cottages but most tourists never get a chance to experience the true Finnish way of life. I'm glad you guys did! This is how all tourists should do it!
I lived for a couple of years in a cabin in the middle of a small forest in southern Finland without running water or any other comforts (except for electric light, an oven and a fridge) because I dislike modern technology, and it was basically just like what people can see in your video. Nowadays I do have running water and a toilet inside the house but seeing what you did brought back sweet memories! :)
Kiitos! That means a lot to us! The experience was very rewarding and fulfilling! We're so happy we got to have it. We hope we can have the experience again one day!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
absolutely stunning experience.
I would do that in a heartbeat. Quiet, solitude. And you are right, the feeling of doing everything for yourself
Well done, thank-you for sharing your enthusiasm for adventure.
It was such a wonderful experience! It was rewarding and fulfilling to do it all yourself for sure!
Every Finn knows the tingling ever since childhood because when you'd been playing outside for hours in the winter as a kid and you get back home in the warm, the body is needles and pins all over. 😄
It was an amazing feeling!
What an adventure! Thanks for taking us along.
You guys have had more authentic finnish experience in your trip than me in my lifetime as a finn. I must improve my finnishness. Lapland has felt a bit dull to me always, but it has grown on me over the years. It must be the isolation and the sense of calming down. I like your videos and the positivity. These ones lit a spark in me. Keep up the good work!
That's awesome to hear! It was an awesome experience and we want more of it! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Such a beautiful video it looks like you had an amazing time. And its fun to see someone else calls to the fish when trying to get them to bite.
haha anything to get a bite! 😂 thank you and thanks for watching!
I love this video. It’s perfect, you did a great job with filming and experiencing this remote cabin and Finnish way of life. Thank you for sharing with us.
Also, this looks like a dream experience and vacation 😊
Thank you so much!
It was so refreshing. We wish everyone could experience it
Thanks you guys so much for your new amazing video today’s from Helsinki, Finland @ this Winter Season in the forest to shows the amounts of Snowfalls in the country 2024❤❤❤

It really was! Thank you and thanks for watching!
What a great experience. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Amazing, glad you enjoyed!
Wow....might be the best A+K adventure yet. Happy Trails 🐕
Thank you!
Congratulations to you guys for your new remarkable video this weekend from Helsinki, Finland to shows these amazing places in March of 2024❤❤❤
This was such a great video! Glad you all go to have this experience.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
As Always Awesome video!!
So glad you did the sauna and got to experience how great it is!!
We're biiiig sauna fans now! Thank you!
Loved this video! What an adventure.
Oh my goodness this was a wonderful time. God bless you guys and thank you for sharing such a beautiful adventure in such an absolutely stunning part of creation.❤❤
Another wonderful video and adventure. Still got us with that squeaky snow. Thanks for continuing to challenge yourselves and for sharing it all with us.
Thank you, Bob!
You had a good choice for airbnb-place! Couple of years ago I with my girlfriend had the same place for us for some 4 days. It was great, we had a great time! Even as a finn, I think the atmosphere of Inari lake and cabin itself are truly unique. Also the owner was really great guy and really helpful. We spent our days skiing cross the lake and exploring island. Not forgetting sauna!
It was so nice and such a memorable experience! Yes and the host was very helpful and nice! We recommend staying there to anyone who has the right attitude!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
A+K, You too are so nice & I’m so happy my husband & I got to watch your experience & show us this place.
Your video is beyond beautiful.
😍Happy Sunday!!!
We're thankful that y'all watch! ❤
This was the coolest adventure ever!!! 💖 Literally Winter Wonderland! The stars were so beautiful! I am so proud of you both and happy that you tried the water dipping! You two honestly inspire me so much.
Seriously a winter wonderland! Everywhere you look! Thank you and thanks for watching, Nae!
Thank you for taking us on such a great adventure! I wouldn't be brave enough to dip in that water, lol. Epic trip.
Thank you! ❤
This is such an awesome video. So happy to experience all this vicariously through your guys! The whole scenery was sublime. Watching you both take a dip in the frozen lake gave me chills😮. Fabulous series.
We're glad we could share our experience! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Absolutely loved this. Thanks ❤️❤️❤️
Kudos for doing this!
Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thank you for watching!
This was such a FANTASTIC video…everything about it…the cabin, sauna, dipping in the freezing lake, rolling in the snow plus so much more…so VERY COOL❣️ Love love loved it❣️
It was such a rewarding and refreshing experience! One we'll never forget!
Also loved with 100 %.
Sounds like a great experience
You guys have alot of sisu! Greetings from Finland, this video made my heart warm. I felt all those things you did alongside with you while watching this video.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Such an amazing adventure! You are such troopers, pushing out of comfort zone and sharing all with your viewers! Absolutely loved this as much as your Alaska/Yukon/Artic Adventures! I am starting to miss your Van adventures with Mona though!
Thank you so much, Barb!
We love mixing international adventures with our domestic van adventures. We're gearing up to hit the road again soon and will have lots of van and Kona to share! Thanks for watching
Amazing video, the more our family travels, the more we want to stay in unique places and this one takes the cake 😂 what an adventure. I Read your newsletter a few weeks ago, glad your home, resting, and getting a routine ( love juice and Toya as well 😂) and gearing up for your 2024 adventures, amazing video as always, take care guys! Xoxo Melissa
Yes those workouts have been awesome! We've loved being home, but we are excited to hit the road soon! Thank you for subscribing and reading our newsletter! It means a lot to us!
This is a DREAM! Such a cool opportunity.
Hey Kathryn and Adam, thanks, really enjoyed your video! Looks like you caught some really crisp and lovely heart-of-the-winter days...:) Very glad (and impressed) that you decided to do a really authentic experience of an off-grid cabin. Those were everywhere when I was growing up, but these days Lapland is mostly full of modern or luxury cabins - and while they are of course great, you will miss some major elements of "Finnishness"...:) Enjoy your travels..!
Those luxury cabins do sound nice, but we're so glad we decided to do a more authentic experience. It is something we'll never forget! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great video. Y`all making me homesick.
Kudos on the sauna experience in Finland! Thank you for sharing your journey in Finland ... it looks so relaxing which I think we all need :)
Thank you, Grace!
Major props you guys for the off grid adventure. Triple for the sauna experience. Thank you as always for sharing.
Thanks, Jose!
Very impressed! Authentic Finnish experience. Solitude and sisu.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
U guys are so brave & adventurous! I love it 😍 great job! Thanks for sharing!❤
Thank you!
Amazing for me as a Finn? You did such things that only few is doing it in today Finland . Nice video . I loved it .
That means a lot to us! Thank you!
You guys are awesome!! I am living through your amazing videos!! Thank you guys for bringing us along on your adventures!!!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Love this! One of your best adventure videos ❤!! 😮😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Wow what an experience 🤩
That was fantastic! Good on you for giving everything a go 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Awesome video. I am still trying to warm up after watching. You guys are brave!!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Next you have to come back in the midsummer and repeat the cabin experience, I think it's even more magical when it's green, the birds are singing and it's light outside around the clock!
We hope to return one day to experience Finland in summer! Sounds delightful!
This was a great video! 🫶 I was holding my breath along with you when you dipped into the avanto 😄 I live in south Finland but been to Lapland too, and once stopped at the foot of a fell at night, where there weren't any other people. The silence... it was something else entirely, it felt powerful ✨️
It's such an incredible place! ❤ thank you and thanks for watching!
Holy cow! €1800 for the igloos! No wonder only sponsored influencers stay there
😅 yup!
I laughed so hard at you guys taking a polar dip. The two Texans. 😂
You 2 are so game to go outside your comfort zone. Kudos for another great episode!
These are the types of experiences we've been craving and want more of! Thank you!
Youbhad a great trip , thanks for sharing .
Wow! What a fantastic experience! The great thing about you it’s you choose to go all in. Your content it’s so inspiring. Now we want to do the same.
Anne & Eric
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was first video I have watched from your channel, and I have to say that this was very well made video. I need to check out more of your videos.
And also thank you for making this video, I have to say that this is by far best video about Finnish cabin living I have ever seen.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to us!
Thank you for watching! ❤
This is best travel video of Finland what I have seen. Most videos are just from tourist traps in Helsinki or lapland. Especially your food choices were great and the place ofcourse.
Awesome! Thank you so much! We loved our time there!
I am so impressed how well you did everything. Like absolute locals. And you did everything by yourselves?? ❤
If you did everything without a guide you are friggin absolute legends!
All by ourselves! With the very helpful instructions of the owner Köpi. Thank you for watching! 😃
Thank you for sharing this unique experience with us.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
This video was fantastic. Thank you!
❤❤
What great memories ❤
This video was wonderful and showed us something most of us will never experience. Excellent video and filling in the cold must have been difficult.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
COULD THIS B MAGIC.........LOVE IT.
This is the proper Finnish way. My grandmother who passed away just a couple of years ago, lived 91 out of her 93 years in a place like this without running water. She was 92 years old when she had a shower or a toilet for the first time, before that it was buckets warmed with fire for bathing and outdoor toilet.
Wow! What a life! Makes us feel so spoiled. Thank you for sharing that and thanks for watching!
WOW😮😮😮😮 how cool😅😅😅. Great vid, love watching your activitie.
❤
Having moved from the north to Helsinki for uni last autumn, I miss this so much. You did this so "right" that you could even inspire someone who lived in a place like that for 20 years! 😄 IF you are ever planning to come back, whether it is in the summer or in the winter, I recommend visiting Kuusamo, my home town, which is (arguably) much more beautiful and diverse nature-wise than Rovaniemi.
That means a lot to us! We sure hope we can come back one day! We loved the winter, but I think we'd like summer even more! Would love to check out Kuusamo too
WOW! What an adventure! That was so unique! I enjoyed the quiet and nobody around except for the reindeer. You guys are awesome!
It was such a rewarding and fulfilling experience!
Fantastic! Totally the type of place our family likes to stay. Both excellent books.
We really enjoyed those books! And the cabin of course! Thanks for watching!
One of my favorites from you guys... The best seclusion you could ask for ... AMAZING
Thank you!
