Very well explained, I enjoy how you actually explain how the firearm works. This is a strong contender for my first EDC and after this video and the comments I feel a when 1 would be best.
Thanks for the video. I just purchased the M&P Shield 9. I did look at the M2 and decided that it was not worth the extra cost. My local gun dealer also had the 10 round magazine in stock from pro mag that fits the pistol perfectly.
Got a M&P 45 Shield with the Performance Center upgrades about 2 weeks ago As a left handed shooter, I have no problem with the magazine release. My left hand index finger hits it quickly & nicely. Now, locking the slide back isn't as smooth yet. All in all, I'm very happy with this weapon. Size, fit, accuracy, all acceptable for what it's designed for.
I own the original Shield 9mm and I am looking to get me a 2.0 9mm I've been carrying my shield 9 for years and I love it can't wait to try out the 2.0 9 Shield
Will be picking up my new S&W Shield 2.0 9mm this week. Great price at $335. Wanted the Shield for better IWB concealment at 4 o'clock. I felt my .380 just wasn't enough stopping power (psychologically) and my Sig SP2022 9MM just wasn't concealable enough. I noticed many times I was printing to much. Will probably still utilize my .380 as a boot gun for backup only. Went with a BraDec IWB holster for my new Shield 2.0 we'll see how it feels and works out. Great video. Be safe and EDC
I own a 1. 0 shield 9mm and a .45 shield. The .45 is not called a 2.0 but it has the aggressive texture and better / lighter trigger. I shoot the .45 a little better than the 9mm due to the upgrades. But if you already own a 1.0 9mm I'm not sure its worth the extra money.
I bought my 1.0 shield a couple months ago at academy for 329.00 I don't see anything I'm missing out on very happy with it I put a rubberized talon grip I ordered from talon gun grips that made the grip very nice got the grips for my 3 mags also
Does anybody know if Shield 1.0 mags service 2.0’s? I can’t find OEM mags anywhere for the 2.0 right now and I see what look like a lot of double stack mags available but not for the 2.0..
I have had 3 of the original 9mm Shields and 1 of them in 40. I have carried and practiced with the 9mm since 2014. I love this gun and the price point compared to most other guns is another reason it’s such a popular carry gun.
$579 is the MSRP with Tritium night sites, the base model is $479. With INTEGRATED CRIMSON TRACE® RED LASER the MSRP is $499... Great video!! Thank you for making it and sharing it!
On a side note the 9mm font on the barrel probably has more to do with production date than 1.0 vs 2.0 as my original shield has the newer font. As for changes, your basically paying an extra $50 for a stipple job and a very MINOR trigger lightening. Changes are very minimal compared to the larger 2.0's. This is more like 1.2, they are the same damn gun. 2.0s are going for $429 here and regular shields $375 (except 40 cal which I guess are unpopular enough to sell for $299).
The print on the barrel is what caught my eye in the video, I looked at my 1.0 and the font is the same as the 2.0 he was shaking around, so I was wondering if the guy who had it before me switched barrels or something. It's definitely a 1.0 slide and frame.
This is a very nice side by side. Thanks for doing it. i got the shield 40 for 279 when the $75 rebate was going on. i carry this and I’m used to the trigger and wondered if the 2.0 was worth getting. I’m thinking now if i did anything it would be to find a gen 1 performance center model for less than the 2.0 since it has a “better” trigger than what i have now. Thanks again for the video. It helped me make up my mind.
I bought mine back in 2015 (Gen 1) and has been [imo] one of my best firearm purchases, by far. This was a very well detailed explanation of the differences between the two models, however I [personally] prefer my Gen 1 model over the "2.0". I would also like to point out, that on my Shield®️, I have the "sharper" 9mm stamping on the barrel, opposed to what you detailed in your differences (not that it really matters! 🙄) and by it being a "California issue", mine doesn't have the topside "peephole", but a "when loaded" (red) raised indicator instead! 😉👌 Outside of that, you were spot on!..💯% #LoveMyShield!..🛡🥰
I'm putting it in rotation this winter as a pocket fire extinguisher! So many people loving the Shied, they can't be wrong! My local shop didn't have much to say good and said "the Shield is a weak handgun" !!! I laughed because they know me well (we're gun snobs) but I have complete faith in the little Shield to get it done! Thank you very much for your contribution on UA-cam! Your videos are very professional and well done.
This is 2024 now and I just bought a brand new M&P 45 shield, but I had to pay $500 for it. I do not regret it though, I've been carrying it for over a week now and I think I'm in love haha. It replaces a Phoenix arms hp22a which I carried on me at work since it was easily concealable but ridiculously underpowered, and I was carrying a full size Taurus PT 24/7 Pro 40 S&W when I would go to larger stores but it was very difficult to conceal. This Shield has been a dream for me already to conceal carry because I forget it's even there all day while I'm at work. 🙂
In over 50 years of shooting, I have yet to ever press check a gun. Why people want to purposely take a gun out of battery is beyond me. I know some will say they want to ensure the gun is loaded and that's stupid. If you don't trust your gun enough to KNOW it's loaded after you release the slide on a loaded mag, then you need to change guns. It's a crap gun. If you can't remember if you loaded your gun or what the status is, then maybe you need to reevaluate your ability to carry a gun. But let's give that a benefit of a doubt and say, you just forgot, for whatever reason, then simply clear your gun and start over. Drop the mag. Clear the gun. Reload the gun. You can do all that in a matter of seconds and never take a Condition Red gun out of battery and maybe put it back in battery. And your hand never gets close to the muzzle where those dumbass serrations are up front. By the way, when I say I trusted my weapon enough to know it was loaded, I had a lot riding on that knowledge. Multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan with over a thousand patrols in some of the shittiest shit holes in the world, and I trusted my weapon enough to never have done a press check.
I picked up my original 9mm shield at Cabella’s with vets discount, Smith &Wesson factory rebate, tax and additional approval cost $250 out the door about 6 months ago.. It’s almost identical to my Taurus slim 709 which I’ve had for years. They both use the same holster and shoot about the same. Don’t know if I can give the edge to either one over the other. Nice gun for conceal carry.
Roadrider19119 my buddy just bought the original shield and I shot the pistol and it was dead on for me and I am not a great pistol shooter but the gun fells great in hand
Probably a better choice to get an original (while it was on sale) and upgrade to an apex carry duty trigger and talon grips. Would have been nice if the 2.0 had a lower rail for a light
Julie goulob did a test and the compensator didn't do much of anything... The shirt barrel is so close to rotational axis that it would take stouter or longer barrel for it to work... But u also get the trigger... I tried for one... But I'm not paying the extra money for a vented barrel that does no good... And they say u lose velocity no much but still... It's a short barrel
I bought the Shield 9 2.0 in 2017, never shot the 1st generation. I use it as an EDC, and have fairly good success at training out to 7 yards but not much more. I have heard that the tigger is an improvement over the 1st gen. The recoil is an issue with hotter defensive rounds and the trigger has a punishing bite on my finger. I prefer my S&W 5904 or 910 for shooting and accuracy but of course those pistols are heavy on the hip.
I recently purchased the 2.0 and I love it. I feels well balanced and is far superior to the Glock 43. My only issue is that the magazines are stiff as heck! I have to push the follower with a pen because I cannot with my thumb.
@DR Dan amen to that man. Yes, that is a good solution. After a trip to the range and about 200 rounds later, the mag springs have gotten less stiff as well as the slide stop. Guess it takes time. Also, I loaded both mags to full capacity and let them sit with the rounds for a few days and that has helped a lot. Just out of the box they are insanely difficult. I'm just glad i didn't get the mags with the springs that bend and warp inside the magazine and creates a tangled mess. But when i took apart my 8 round mag the spring looked differently from the ones that warped. Must be new from Smith and Wesson.
So if the biggest difference is the trigger then why shouldn’t I buy the v1 for $250 and add an apex trigger for like $100? That would put me way under the cost of the 2.0 which goes closer to $425ish.
They are almost exactly the same. Grip texture slight change. Trigger slight change slide front serrations slight change. All in all I can change all of these on my original shield.
These are made in Massachusetts, funny thing is you can't legally buy anything without a load indicator in MA (Also must have safety switch, and 10 lbs trigger pull, lol, yes, 10 lbs!)
I have the 1.0 I bought for $225. Just got the 2.0 with integrated laser for $335. I like the idea of having a factory laser and not a bulky add on. Almost identical in every way. Triggers are exactly the same. Weight is suppose to be lighter in the 2.0 for some reason. Can’t really feel it. Finish on frame is more smooth on the 1.0 and grip is more aggressive on 2.0. Says new audible reset on 2.0 but my 1.0 sounds exactly the same. I’ve owned close to 30 carry guns and I feel the shield is the best for what it is. Now with the Plus version out I would consider that over the 1.0. Only thing I’m not crazy about is the cheap looking flat trigger it comes with. Add some Trijicon HD’s on these and your good to go
Got my gen 1today❤️came with green&red sights Don’t like the flush mag, had to get a tyrant designs +2 extension and put mag guts in the 8 for +2. Now to port the slide & barrel😁 Edit: Don’t get tyrant mag extension they do not include a spring which is needed. Go with Xtech👍theirs come with a spring
I'm a little concerned about the interest in a plastic box for "presentation" for what is essentially an inexpensive, albeit very well-designed and effective, self-defense tool. These aren't prized collectibles, or range queens. It's like worrying about how your framing hammer was boxed. Really, the only "presentation" you should be concerned about with a pistol this size is on a target at the range, or a threat anywhere else.
I mean, I'm not really all for the plastic case. It would be nice to have it though, for example when taking it to the range, since you would have your back up weapon concealed. Would have been a nice plus, but like the other folks mentioned, not a big deal.
@@YouWhatMate_Official The only worthwhile ergonomic upgrade to me are the fish scales on the front near the muzzle. I hate the aggressive grip texture honestly. I prefer the original's much more.
If I had the original Shield, I would not bother to upgrade, but I didn't have one. I bought the 2.0 and it's my favorite gun to shoot. The Shields are the best value of any on the market imo.
@@AxcelGamer97 I took some 100 grit (on the seems) and sanded it down some. I also did work on the beavertail and trigger area inside and out. Looks and feels nice now.
as a shield 2.0 owner, ill say this: super reliable, accurate, small, light and budget friendly gun. As far as negatives: the grip does snag on clothing pretty badly, I added the hogue over grip sleeve, and it cured any gripe I have had with the firearm. trigger is excellent for what it is, its not a 1911 or a single action revolver... capacity is adjustable with magazine extenders if you wish. overall excellent choice for edc, cc.
Seems like no real differences. Glad I got another of the originals on deep discount and the rebate. Would have been helpful to note what parts are interchangeable and if the APEX upgrades are the same for both. Thank goodness S&W isn't following the path of Glock with a new version every year..... sheesh.
I just recently bought a used gen 1 shield. Haven't shot it yet, thanks bills for existing so I can't buy ammo lol, but it will be my carry gun for the foreseeable future
Basically the same exept for a lil better trigger, grip and mini front slide serrations. I love my 2.0 but not sure if it was worth spending like 200 more than the original
Hello from Zionsville, Indiana. The 7-round factory magazine for my Shield 2.0 doesn't drop freely when it's empty, when I press the mag-release button, like in my Glock 26 Gen 5, aside from that, it's been great.
Dont forget, you can also make your.40 shield to a 9mm just with the barrel swap, and the .40 mags will still shoot 9mm so in my opinion you get both worlds in one GREAT TOOL. God bless.
This is a very informative video. However, when viewing a comparison video such as this, one would expect a more side by side comparing of the two firearms. (First one then the other you miss a little) All of this information that you provided could have been easily obtained from S&W website. After watching your video, the only difference in the two that I see, is the stippling on the grip, the front slide serrations, and the 2.0 markings. Oh, of course the price difference. Maybe I missed something after 18 some odd minutes of watching...

After 200 rounds on my s&w shield the trigger is as smooth as a baby's butt. (Original Shield)
@JKay11235 any jams or malfunction?
I have well over 2,000 rounds on my Gen 1, and my trigger still feels crunchy. I don't like it.

Very well explained, I enjoy how you actually explain how the firearm works. This is a strong contender for my first EDC and after this video and the comments I feel a when 1 would be best.
Have a shield 9mm performance center. Absolutely no complaints. Accurate and feels good in hands especially since I added a houge rubber grip.
Thanks for the video. I just purchased the M&P Shield 9. I did look at the M2 and decided that it was not worth the extra cost. My local gun dealer also had the 10 round magazine in stock from pro mag that fits the pistol perfectly.
Got a M&P 45 Shield with the Performance Center upgrades about 2 weeks ago
As a left handed shooter, I have no problem with the magazine release. My left hand index finger hits it quickly & nicely.
Now, locking the slide back isn't as smooth yet.
All in all, I'm very happy with this weapon. Size, fit, accuracy, all acceptable for what it's designed for.
Hands are gonna slip with that much oil jeeez!
Based on your review, I would call the newer version a 1.02 as it is little changed.
To me, 2.0 would mean bigger changes.
I just bought a original Shield 9mm this weekend and loving it so far
Thinking about doing the same thing. The original one is at a great price compared to the 2.0.
@@signsofthetimes886 I paid 299.99 on sale two weeks ago at Scheels sporting goods
I own the original Shield 9mm and I am looking to get me a 2.0 9mm I've been carrying my shield 9 for years and I love it can't wait to try out the 2.0 9 Shield
It tears shirts like crazy just heads up I sold mine and got the OG.
Matt Soares ty for the information on that isn't that aggressive to wear actually tear shirts that much
Will be picking up my new S&W Shield 2.0 9mm this week.
Where are you and people finding the 2.0 for under $350? Everywhere online I see it for like $450+
Try Buds
I own a 1. 0 shield 9mm and a .45 shield. The .45 is not called a 2.0 but it has the aggressive texture and better / lighter trigger. I shoot the .45 a little better than the 9mm due to the upgrades. But if you already own a 1.0 9mm I'm not sure its worth the extra money.
I had my carry shield for 3 1/2 years. Great gun for the price.
Do you still carry it?
I bought my 1.0 shield a couple months ago at academy for 329.00 I don't see anything I'm missing out on very happy with it I put a rubberized talon grip I ordered from talon gun grips that made the grip very nice got the grips for my 3 mags also
Does anybody know if Shield 1.0 mags service 2.0’s? I can’t find OEM mags anywhere for the 2.0 right now and I see what look like a lot of double stack mags available but not for the 2.0..
Talon Grips work well on my Gen 1 Shield. I do love mt 2.0 Compact though. Great comparison...thanks!
Put them on my 2.0 as the stippling was too rough on my old side when carrying.
@@oldgoat50 I thought about it, but decided to take some 320 grit automotive sandpaper to it...worked great.
Excellent review on both!! Thanks on the insight n information, doesn't get easier than that in making a decision..
Excellent review👍👍👍👍 looking at purchasing this pistol for my daughter.. This was a big help..✌
Excellent review and comparison!
I had my m&p shield for 2 years, fired a 1000 rounds though it, no issues what so ever, am Very Happy with it 😍🔫💎
@Maurice Haynes Yes, it was Excellent...
😉👌 Outside of that, you were spot on!..💯%
#LoveMyShield!..🛡🥰
How’s it run? Any mis feeds hear and there or flawless ?
Thanks! Just picked up the original Shield tonight for $349. Great comparison review.
Thanks for watching! Enjoy your Shield - its a good choice
The M&p 45 is not labeled as a shield 🛡️
If never understood why people complain about a trigger on gun. If it's for self defence last thing id think about is how gritty or heavy it is
Roadrider19119 my shields 6 pound trigger would turn into a 1 pound trigger in self defense setting
People like to be able to make accurate shots. You may have to shoot at greater than 3 yards.
Roadrider19119 my buddy just bought the original shield and I shot the pistol and it was dead on for me and I am not a great pistol shooter but the gun fells great in hand
Enduro EPICHUGGYBEAR must be nice.
Seriously.... and its pretty damn easy to change the trigger if it is that big of an issue
17:57 just to tell us the diff? I have a 5min attention span pal!
Really good review. Thank you.
Probably a better choice to get an original (while it was on sale) and upgrade to an apex carry duty trigger and talon grips. Would have been nice if the 2.0 had a lower rail for a light
Just bought the shield original from Academy. After in store $50 gift card and factory rebate my price was $213 with taxes.
Crazy good deal.
Evers Irias i got 40ty with lock for 420 USD
The shield has always had the steel mag release. It's never been all polymer......
I got mine on a military base exchange for $283 after a discount and general sale going on at the time 👌👌
Original or 2.0?
Would love to see maybe just a quick video of 2.0 vs Performance Center Shield.
I prefer my S&W 5904 or 910 for shooting and accuracy but of course those pistols are heavy on the hip.
good and thorough explanation. I went to your site. you don't have any for sale.
Thanks for your comparison video. Was wondering what was the upgrade difference. Thanks
Hyve makes a nice extended mag. Kit For this.
They are almost exactly the same. Grip texture slight change. Trigger slight change slide front serrations slight change. All in all I can change all of these on my original shield.
A section of bicycle tire innertube works great stretched around the grip.
I always have a round in the chamber..I don’t need to look.
These are made in Massachusetts, funny thing is you can't legally buy anything without a load indicator in MA (Also must have safety switch, and 10 lbs trigger pull, lol, yes, 10 lbs!)
Bass Pro has the Original 9mm or 40, with thumb $289 + $50 instant rebate + $50 mail in rebate = $189 !
I thought 299 was a decent deal wow. They almost gave you that thing.

same here + TruGlo TFX Pro sights.
So what oil do you recommend? 5w-30 in a 55gal barrel?

Very informative! Great job with this video.
Thanks I really appreciate it!
Add some Trijicon HD’s on these and your good to go
excellent video! subbed! Did you write out what you were going to say in order to maintain the narrative, or were you winging it? You did good
Got my gen 1today❤️came with green&red sights
Don’t like the flush mag, had to get a tyrant designs +2 extension and put mag guts in the 8 for +2. Now to port the slide & barrel😁
Edit: Don’t get tyrant mag extension they do not include a spring which is needed.
Go with Xtech👍theirs come with a spring
Will the shield 2.0 mags work in the original shield ?
Bobby Powell pretty sure they’re inner changeable
Anyone else kinda bothered with the cardboard box instead of the hard case?
Nope. I buy a pistol for the pistol.
I tend to throw away factory hard cases and get better hard cases that hold multiple guns
Mine lives in a holster. If they would have charged $2 less I wouldn't have given a cap if it came in a zip lock bag.
I mean, I'm not really all for the plastic case. It would be nice to have it though, for example when taking it to the range, since you would have your back up weapon concealed. Would have been a nice plus, but like the other folks mentioned, not a big deal.
Basically it's the same gun.. I thought some of the design itself might have changed.. no big deal.. not buying the same gun over again.
Right? Having some ergonomic upgrades does not seem to be worth the increased price. Which is why I have the 1.0 and not the 2.0
@@YouWhatMate_Official The only worthwhile ergonomic upgrade to me are the fish scales on the front near the muzzle.
I only see a difference in the grip and those tiny front slide serrations. Who really needs those?
I have an original and would like to point out that the originals do have an over travel trigger stop although it is smaller and placed differently.
Nice thorough review. I was going to pick up an older version but I think I'll go with the 2.0.
The M&P shield 380 2.0 is really a nice piece as well❤
as a shield 2.0 owner, ill say this: super reliable, accurate, small, light and budget friendly gun.
Do the 2.0's take double stacked magazines?
@@donsal.t.1765 nope. Still single stack.
@@beastcarsnj868 ah ok. thanks
Seems like no real differences. Glad I got another of the originals on deep discount and the rebate. Would have been helpful to note what parts are interchangeable and if the APEX upgrades are the same for both. If you take a look closely the groove inside the barrel the 2.0 is thicker than the original.
I just got the original. Love it.
Information on those two pistols very informative
Will the 2.0shield fit in a holster for an original shield
Yes
Basically the same exept for a lil better trigger, grip and mini front slide serrations. I love my 2.0 but not sure if it was worth spending like 200 more than the original
Hello from Zionsville, Indiana. The 7-round factory magazine for my Shield 2.0 doesn't drop freely when it's empty, when I press the mag-release button, like in my Glock 26 Gen 5, aside from that, it's been great.
Thank you!!! Great explanation! Appreciate your time!!
Dont forget, you can also make your.40 shield to a 9mm just with the barrel swap, and the .40 mags will still shoot 9mm so in my opinion you get both worlds in one GREAT TOOL.
God bless.
Interesting
Why so much oil on the gun? Nice comparison btw..👍
I was thinking the same thing!
Maybe I missed something after 18 some odd minutes of watching...
supposedly better trigger
Good job cutting to the chase regarding the differences. Certainly not worth upgrading to the 2.0 if you already have the original.

Ted _ Cori I thought they did make a 45 gen one I got a 45 shield in 2016 and it had the stippling
Enduro EPICHUGGYBEAR I want a 45 without the stippling

I put on a Talon grip, much better feel and doesn’t slip in your hand.
Also... The Gen 1 shield you have is a gen1.5 the very first releases literally had no tactile or audible reset.
Watch colion noirs video you'll see the lack of a reset. They actually worked with Apex to improve it before the official 2.0 release.
