Completely agree with this. Understanding that Old No. 7 is made for mass market and bars then realizing the rest of their product line is actually good is so important.
I'm 2 months into drinking whiskey, I found gentleman jack last week. It's freaking amazing. I did drink half a bottle yesterday at a wedding, the easy to drink statement is a fact. Also I'm in grand rapids.
Sounds like it's time to have a Jack Daniels single barrel flight fight. 1. Single Barrel Select 2. Single Barrel Rye 3. Single Barrel Barrel Proof 4. Single Barrel BiB 5. Coy Hill (for even more fun!)
When I was on college in western Maryland we had access to such a variety of Kentucky and Tennessee whiskey and bourbon, so many names. Jack from that era existed in a world without Gentleman Jack. Loved Jack in that time frame, today's bourbons are a treat to the palate, especially barrel proof unfiltered
Had about 7 glasses of gentleman jack on New Year’s Eve. So damn smooth, hit the spot. It is what it is! I would recommend for someone just getting into whisky. 💯
So many channels cater to one audience by placing barrel-proof whiskeys as the be-all-end-all. Thanks for bringing love to the lower proofs, because there is always a place for them. As you guys stated, we've all started somewhere in that neighborhood, so you can't ignore that audience. WT Longbranch was my first love. Also, sometimes I just want to warm up with something nice and easy, before unleashing my nuclear arsenal. 😏 Cheers 🥃
After long years of scotch I just saw this at the local store in Turkey, Bursa, on sale, and thought why not. I am into my second glass (bottom half tip of a glencairn) and this is exceptional. It does not tell you any particular story. It just sweets you. Honey honey honey. Love it. This could make an alcoholic out of anyone.
I stared out with Buffalo Trace and at 90 proof it felt like fire in my throat. An 80-proofer would have probably been a smarter choice. Sweet spot for me now is 110-120. Some of those 130+ ones are still a bit much for me, though there are exceptions.
I'll admit that on my whiskey journey, I used to poo poo gentleman jack, just like I poo poo'd Longbranch. But, as my tastes and perspective changed, so has my opinion of both products. I get why they exist now and appreciate them for what they are. Do I buy them? not personally. Will I buy them if they are for cheap at a bar?? Hell yes.
Good place to start....not very complex, not a lot of great expanding flavors on the palate. Which is interesting because the SBBP is SO amazing so you know they CAN if they want to.
The BP SBBP is a big difference. You're talking 120+ proof vs 80 proof. Having more ck.plex flavors in 120+ doesn't mean they could do the same at 80. That is a very naive claim to make.
My closest store has this for $25! Everyone else is $30-$35. Its imo the best whiskey coke option. Mixers, shots, easy sipper. 100% grab another before i run out.
I love me some Jack of all trades, I just wish that they would get that proof back up to at least 86...that's why I jump on the legacy bottles that sit around and eventually go on sale. I feel like JD is missing opportunities to get more people into Old No. 7 by bringing back the way it used to be. How are they not marketing more retro versions at the original proof points? Do they really need to eek out a couple extra bottles per barrel for more 80proof whiskey? Gentleman Jack could be the easiest way to get back to the 90 proof option but I guess the double mellowing is the gimmick they want to stick with and get more product at lower proof.
Got my start on makers mark, 90 proof. Got me coughing and wiping my eyes, but for some reason i went in for another drink. Ever since, been the whiskey guy. Unless there is whiskey or beer, i’m having pepsi
Watching this during my post whiskey weekend layover in Junkie Country. Just waiting for post shaved dan to start appearing in video. He somehow got even better looking. TeamDan

I used to always take a bottle of gentlemen’s jack to pregame party’s in college. Compared to all the plastic bottle garbage people drank back then it was like walking in with a pappy. Everyone always enjoyed the hell out of it.
I use to hate whiskey and my best friend loves J.D. after years I got the gentleman jack last month and drank it. Of course I made a nasty face and after the 3rd day I was drinking it straight and don't make ugly faces no more. I've tried other whiskeys and J.D is really one of thr smoothest. Great review guys!
Agreed. Enough of the hating logos and brands. Had a 50ml of Gentleman Jack recently and enjoyed how nice and friendly it is. Just good times, that's all drinking should be ☺️ Still getting something else though for the 750ml 😆
Glad you didn't shit on the bottle because of how advanced your palette is now. It's not bad for the price. Is it great? No, but is it bad, not at all. It's just a decent bottle for what it is.
I've only been drinking whiskey for 4 years and I've had many different kinds because I found the regular JD to just be a bit boring or just had a favour that never wowed me maybe because my first ever whiskey was peated Idk but Gentleman Jack takes No 7 but flips it, as I'm typing this i take my first sip and i actually enjoy it even though I've had other whiskeys that have more flavour and taste GJD is a win in my books.
@@lfish21. I’m in Ohio (a control state) so unless you’re a retiree with no life who’s at the store at 3am good luck getting anything better than standard BT or Weller SR lol
Before I ever buy Gentleman Jack for myself, I would buy a bunch of lower-priced bourbons, like Wild Turkey 101, which is a much nicer whiskey, in my opinion. Your opinion may be different.
JD actually recommends starting out with GJ as an introduction to their product line. Just stay away from the Old no. 7 or 8 or whatever the fuck it is.
Call me crazy but I am newish to the bourbon/whisky game but I much prefer russels single, Rare Breed , 1920 etc.. to WFDO, EC, BT even 1910 blah blah. To me anything over 70-80proof has enough alcohol that the mouth feel, taste, finish that sounds wrong lol is really all that matters. The lower proof bottles almost all seem to feel thin, bland and more astringent. Even though there is a little more warmth especially in the chest the actual taste drink and experience is nicer and easier with higher proof. I’m not talking 130+ but I would much rather sip something that’s 110 over a 90.4 anyday. More flavor and surprisingly less harshness
@@ljdecker546 I like what someone told me about MM46 - "you can taste the barrel". I like the spiciness and mouth feel. It's not my daily drinker, but it makes a good Old Fashioned.
I'm going to come back to it But honestly this stuff taste like water with no finish 🤣..... Currently have a bottle in my possession.... I will go back to it to see if my experience changes. I went back to it.....I got peanuts this time which is nice because I like peanut butter....the finish is non existent....I think this is a solid choice now that I'm coming back to it 👍....but there's better out there if you enjoy a nice finish which is essential to a whiskey in my opinion
I like smooth drinks. Gentleman Jack is a smoking-jacket-wearing fellow with a grey Mephistopheles moustache and a black silk tie who is wheeling all the ladies in the bar.
To me old 7 tastes like gasoline, while gentlemen jack taste like filtered gasoline. I think it's bareable whiskey, but for the price while being ultra smooth, it lacks the flavor of a bourbon in the same price range. I love me some 1792 small batch, or kirkland bottle in bond, or even larency for that matter.
So your sayin that if Coy Hill were a car it would be an F1 racer and Gentlemen Jack would be like sitting in a wheelchair pushing yourself around with one foot in the retirement home trying to get to the rec room to watch jeopardy.
Good but not very complex. And VERY OFTEN OVERPRICED. I can get for $28-9-ish at Walmart in FL when I go down there from NC. That's about upper range of what I would pay
Digging the back to your roots review! The allocated and $100+ bottles are nice and delicious but I like diving into the cheaper stuff too now and then.
How did we get this many comments and no one is talking about Dan's "check out our patreon, there's nudes" comment?!? I'm sure it's cookie, nox, and timothy the beluga-rabbit, but still...
Gentleman Jack was the first product that made me think “oh not EVERY JD product sucks”. Single Barrel really hammered that point home.
Completely agree with this. Understanding that Old No. 7 is made for mass market and bars then realizing the rest of their product line is actually good is so important.
That was my exact thought with Gentleman Jack as well
