    Jack Daniels is made in Lynchburg, Tennessee. It was a dry county then, but all the workers got a free pint every six weeks. When I was 13, I went there with my dad. We took the tour and it was really cool. I grew up in Tennessee and jack is still my favorite drink. On the tour they told us the story of him dying from gang green due to kicking his safe. I'm 50 now.

    I just tried Gentleman Jack minutes ago. Is lighter, goes easier on the buds and yeah, it can be a beginners' whiskey. But I still prefer the Old #7. I was hoping to taste Gentleman and it was good, but not as good as the original. But that's just my opinion and taste. Great channel.

    old no 7 is a solid whiskey folks, my favorite for many years, and unfairly gets bashed on reviews, but if you want to nose and carefully sip your whiskey and spend a whole load of money -then sure the likes of old forester and eagle rare are a really lovely pour.

      I don't care what anyone says...it seems like it's popular to bash Jack nowadays for whatever reason, many saying it's over rated. I don't find it over rated at all. I've tried many higher end whiskies over the last 8 years, American, Irish and Scotch. I do love Irish and Scotch, but good ol No. 7 is still my all time favorite whiskey. It is very distinctive and don't understand all the hate it gets.

    I love jack daniels (my fathers and grandfathers favorite) and the gentleman jack is the same but way more mellow and smooth. It doesn't have the burn that old no. 7 has and the drunk is very mellow. Over all they are both good

    In the spirit of never letting old videos die, I figured I'd comment. I've tried a lot of whiskey at this point (much of it higher end) and recently had some Jack Daniel's at a casino. The last time I'd had JD I didn't like it at all. To my surprise, I smelled a lot of banana and really enjoyed it neat. I bought a bottle of the stuff and am rather confused at how much I enjoy it. Grew up thinking I hated this stuff, always handed to me with coke, and really did not like. 20 years later, a bottle that had sat untouched (gift) in my cabinet was opened and I had a go of it straight. You know what, not bad at all - perfectly drinkable. Nothing outstanding of course, but lets just say the bottle didn't last very long.

    Great channel, I did this test with Gentleman Jack and with No 6 distillers edition which is *meant* to be the same as the no 7 save the higher ABV, I much preferred the no 6 had a lot more fruity character where as the GJ lacks character for me and has no real punch to the flavour profile. Gentleman Jack seems to be a bit timid to me just to cut down from the original flavour of Jack.

    Gentelman Jack was the first "better" whiskey I bought after a friend gave me a taste. It is well made and smooth and has probably put many on the path to good whiskey but its so light that when you try to drink it in a tasting with others you better try it first as after just about anything else the nose is gone and so is the taste. That second charcoal filtering after it has aged in the barrel takes out a lot and gives you whiskey with training wheels.

    It was my understanding from a salesman for the brand back in the 1970's, that the "old" in "Old #7" was to distinguish it from Jack Daniels #7 Green Label. At that point in time , all they had was the Green Label and the Black Label. Exact same whiskey, except the Black was aged longer. Hence "old" compared to the Green.

    I used to be a 'Jack' man but got a bottle of Evan Williams black label (86 proof). I was amazed how the flavor was 'fuller', less watered. Now I cannot really enjoy a 80 proof as they all seem to give me the opinion that it is watered out. An 80 proof Scotch, on the other hand, like Glenmorangie Original, allows some of the more subtle flavors to come through. Do you notice this also?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  7 років тому +1

      +PCShogun Back in my early 20s when I had zero money but still wanted whiskey and coke, I switched from Jack to Evan Williams black label. I always found that equal quantities of EW vs. JD would give me a hangover. So I dealt with it for a while but eventually switched back.
      As for Scotch? Scotch is such a different animal, but yes... Scotch doesn't seem to be about the alcohol, more about flavor, so ABV does seem to have less importance.

    • @jshicke
      @jshicke 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. I am not a big drinker, preferring to sip a few ounces straight up, nursing it for awhile. Hangovers have never been much of a problem for me due the the small quantity. Wonder if that charcoal filtering is what makes that difference in your case?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  7 років тому +1

      +PCShogun I've wondered the same thing personally. At some point I'll get to Evan Williams and hopefully come up with an answer. At that point in my life I was drinking three pretty heavy pours at a time with my coke, and also staying up super late... So it could have been more than just the whiskey that factored into it.

    • @jshicke
      @jshicke 7 років тому

      I just had a thought. I should send you a bottle of a local distillery's offering, a frankenstein version of whiskey (bourbon according to them). It is 'artificially' aged in a 'reactor' to give you a 4 year old whiskey in about 3 months. Personally, it was some of the worst swill I ever tasted. Probably makes that Johnny Walker Red Label taste good.

"According to Daniel's biographer, the origin of the "Old No. 7" brand name was the number assigned to Daniel's distillery for government registration.[2][15] He was forced to change the registration number when the federal government redrew the district, and he became Number 16 in district 5 instead of No. 7 in district 4. However, he continued to use his original number as a brand name, since his brand reputation already had been established."

    I remember last year at a Christmas party i drank half a bottle of Jack with Coke then drank half a bottle of JD Honey and passed tf out in my car lmao. Woke up next morning feeling like i was actually dead lol. Still love Jack to this day tho, great drink.

      Oof.... I've turned a bottle of Jack upside down to my lips a few times, it's always been fun for about 30 minutes... then it's been a big mistake.

    Honestly Jack was fine until somebody introduced me to "higher tier" whisky.. Now I always have Scotch and to me Jack's standard bottle is as good a drink as gasoline D:

    At this point on my bourbon journey, I don't care if it sounds snobby or elitist. Jack Daniels No. 7 is trash. It's a great starter whiskey, but only mixed with cola. It's not a sipping whiskey and for me if I can't drink it straight, I can't be bothered with it. Gentleman Jack is underrated and far superior to its better known brother whiskey. I'd guzzle a bottle of GJ long before a skunky bottle of Town Branch (horrible!) or Wild Turkey 81.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  6 років тому +5

      I'm with you... kind of. I'll still totally drink jack and coke. Its nostalgic for me. But I wont drink it straight.
      That being said, single barrel is a surprisingly good dram.

      My whiskey journey was Jim Bean, to Jack Green, Jack Black, Wild Turkey, then Weller. I stopped drinking whiskey for a few decades and then I was introduced to Knob Creek. I have tried Basil Hayden and it was very good, but I preferred Knob Creek. Now it's time to try something new.

    • @atb8660
      @atb8660 5 років тому

      I agree! I wanted to like it as I pride myself on not being an elitist but I was trying buffalo trace, eagle rare, Woodford reserve, WR double Oaked gentleman jack and Russell Creek (and really enjoying them) and I thought I would try no 7 to see how it compared hoping to be pleasantly surprised, I wasn’t it was trash. Whisky Dic I love your work but i can’t agree with you on this one

    I love jack, particularly the single barrel. Sure, jack isn't complex
    Ike scotch or some of the irish whiskey's or high end bourbons, but to outsiders, my wife, for example, it all tastes like kerosene. She loves the smells etc, but as soon as she sips it, cringe....I just laugh and enjoy my whiskey, whether it's jack or Connemara. Oh, love your channel! And I never mix my dram with anything. ...love whiskey for whiskey's sake..Cheers!
