    I adopted a rescue beardie the day before yesterday. Thank you!!! I needed this. I was cuddling with him and taking him for walks and he is so chill. In fact, for most of the time he was in his tank, he was scratching trying to get out. And when I stick him on my shoulder he just chills. His appetite hasn’t been great, so I took him out to bask in the sun, and a bee flew by and he caught it and ate it and it really scared me bc I know they’re not supposed to eat them. He licks fruit I give him. But hasn’t rated any of it yet. It omg I love Enrique so much. He’s my dream pet baby❤️

      @CookiesCritters  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Miranda. Young beardies need to de-stress as a first priority. I’m glad this video helped you to start the journey on the right foot. If I can make a suggestion, please don’t feed superworms and mealworms to young beardies. They can cause regurgitation and impaction. Roaches and fly larvae are the best source of protein and fats.

He does seem to stay under the headlight a lot, but he doesn’t seem to go in his hide. He’s even sleeping on top of his rock where the heat lamp sits.

    I sent you a message on insta but you addressed it all here. Made at myself for not being patient. My poor beardie is so stressed now. Day 3 he won’t eat and won’t leave his hide. If he is out and here’s me coming in room he runs to hide. He wasn’t like this day 1 or 2- he would just bask.
    I feel like the few times I held him and added rocks to his tank I stressed him out.

      Hi Mia. I hope your little one begins eating soon too. If it isn’t eating at all I would contact the breeder or pet shop and let them know. Dragons should at least eat one or two bugs a day even if they are stressed. Non eating dragons may be suffering from parasites and need a vet checkup.

    Thank you for this video, I just got my first beardy earlier this week and realize I've made the mistake of handling him. Haven't been able to get him to eat at all. As for leaving the bugs in the enclosure would you have any suggestions for if they seem to just hide in the substrate? I left a few crickets in there and assumed he had eaten them but the next day cleaning the enclosure I found they were both burrowed in the substrate below the water dish. And for reference the substrate is the Terra Sahara bioactive soil, with the cold side around 85 F & 38% humidity, and the hot side being 102~99 F & 35% humidity, any answer is super appreciated if possible

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 роки тому +11

      Hi. The temperatures sound good. Is the temp for the hot side “air temp” or surface temp. The basking surface temp should be between 108-113 F.
      We never leave insects in their enclosure especially crickets. While the dragon is sleeping, crickets can easily eat the soft flesh (eyes) on the dragon.
      Roaches or Black soldier fly larvae won’t bite or eat the dragon and are a better option.
      How are you giving your dragon a drink?

I’ll back off now. He’s slowed down on the crickets and shows little interest to roaches, but likes dandelion greens so that’s a win I suppose. :) how long should I leave him with the crickets before taking them out? Is it ok to leave the little roaches with him in the enclosure?

    We took home a lil juvie yesterday evening, I've been worried because while he ate a few lil buggos yesterday evening, this morning he wont touch them! I quartered a grape and tossed it in his dish in case he gets hungry between when I leave for work and when my gf gets home from work, she'll try feeding him this evening too, with calcium-dusted feeders.
    I DID pick him up today because last night got a little cold (15c-60f-ish, window wasnt properly closed) and I was worried he was too lethargic to climb down from his branch perch, and wanted to help him get to his basking spot... excuses I know, sorry. he was fully awake at the time, looking around and stuff, so I didnt disturb his sleeping at all. He seemed to appreciate the warmth of my hand, and yeah I washed before and after handling him. But I'll make sure we dont touch him or bother him until he settles

    My baby beardie is about 3-5 weeks estimate ate a bunch one day about 20 ish bugs, got into the shedding process and on the 6th day he had his biggest shed. When he was shedding his appetite was very low normally ate 2-4 bugs then to one and after this big shed this is his second day without eating but I feed him water with a syringe and drinks. He’s getting fairly skinny and you can tell he’s stressed because of the dark spotting and his dark beard. Since he’s still small I have him in a 10 gal long will upgrade eventually , UVB is under a mesh screen and basking spot is 100F. Is it because he’s shedding he still isn’t eating, he’s getting skinnier that’s just what concerns me but he drinks some water everyday.

    Ya, I handled my baby right when I got him, he did fine for about a week and a half I could walk around with him on my hand crawling around or just sit with him resting on my hand, arm or a couple times on my shoulder, then he started going into shed and doesn't want to be messed with at all, I've had him for 3 weeks at this point and he's never ate the dozens of insects at a time like everyone says they eat, tho I don't feed crickets, mealworms and dubias with some wax worms thrown in every couple days, and of course a salad of collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, prickly pear cactus pads when I feel like cutting them off and preparing them lol, as well as yellow and red bell peppers and just picked up a butternut squash the other day to add in, just gotta prepare that, that'll be a weekend project along with preparing his salad for the week, he's never really hid in his enclosure and always out basking up on his rock or out on his logs and he's got a few places to hide if he wanted, and I've only had 3 days in the 3 weeks I've had him that I didn't find poop, 1 of the days I might not have found it because it was under one of his logs 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 but since he's shedding, I figure that at least means he's growing, so I must be doing something right, even tho he's being ornery right now, so I'm only handling right now to bathe and this weekend to clean his enclosure, so he might be mad at me a little bit for that lol, but he did take a mealworm and a piece of red bell pepper from my hand a couple days ago, so he's not too mad at me 😂

    I’ve had my juvenile for 4 days. He/she has eaten roughly 10 crickets a day for the first 3 days, but today only maybe 2. I’ve been stressing out thinking I’m not doing enough or maybe I’m not doing something right. He/she has been basking every day and hasn’t even been in their hide, but has been very active and curious and moving all around to the warm side and cooler side here and there on occasion. I also cannot get them to eat any greens or veggies. Is this normal? Should I worry? Or wait a few more days and see? I just can’t imagine them not eating anything for a day let alone weeks like stated in the video.

    I got a baby dragon 2 weeks ago and I feel like I did everything wrong.. people told me to handle him and other people were handling him as well but he was very skittish and seems to just have gotten more skittish and tries to run if I reach in his cage or runs fast and jumps from our hands if we hold him.. so I’m going to move him to a quieter area in my room instead of the living room because it seems to be stressful.. but my question is, If he has had a stressful two weeks with human interaction including with myself. Will he be able to still learn to be socialized if I give him time to adjust and then slowly start trying to bond w him just me only? Because I feel like I messed up from the beginning and now he’s somehow permanently going to be afraid and hate me lol.. because rn he doesn’t like anybody or to be touched.. help! 🤦🏻‍♀️

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 роки тому

      Hi Natalie. First thing is this is not your fault. The breeder should have stressed the point that the dragon should NOT be held for the first few weeks until it had settled and was eating normally.
      What you are doing to correct the situation is right. Move him somewhere quiet, don’t handle him for a few weeks and if he is in a glass enclosure cover 2/3 of it so he feels safe.
      When it comes time to handle him, take is slowly and keep the interaction to inside his enclosure. Once he starts feeling safe then bring him out of the enclosure for short periods. Keep in mind the activity of others in the room including animals. Too much commotion will scare him.
      Things like scent training and hand feeding (treats) at this time can be effective. Leave a shirt of yours in his enclosure. He will normalise your scent. With hand feeding, don’t do this for every feed only as a treat. Start off using tongs or tweezers and build up to just using your fingers. He will associate your hand as a good thing.
      Just be patient with him and as he grows he will settle. Baby dragons are naturally more skittish than an adult due to their small size.
      Please let me know how you go.

      Hi Mate. If you have already started handling your dragon and he still isn’t eating, I would stop the interaction immediately and only handle for cleaning and health reasons.

But today he/ she wouldn't eat or drink anything. I tried giving waxworms and superworms and greens and even shaved carrot but they didn't eat anything. I saw a video where this girl got her beardie at the pet store and it wouldn't eat but a couple crickets the first day and then wouldn't eat for 5 days. But its been 3 days and still the same amount of roaches, i just feel real worried. Also, is it ok to ‘not’ bathe my baby beardie for the first week? I was told by the breeder that they need daily baths. But in the video, you say not to handle them too much. And if i wanted to spray em with water, wouldnt they feel more stressed because they would he afraid of spraying water at them?

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 роки тому +1

      Ok. Starting with the bathing. Beardies don’t need a bath unless it’s for shedding issues of for hygiene reasons for handling.
      Daily spraying should be done gently. There are spray bottles that deliver a fine mist. If your dragon doesn’t like that, you can drop water on their nose from a kids medicine syringe.
      If the beardie isn’t eating by now I would be contacting the breeder or the shop and discussing your concerns with them. If it’s less than a month old it’s too young in my opinion to be sold. We sell ours around 8-10 weeks of age.
      There may be an underlying health Cindy that is causing the dragon to not eat. Stress and parasites are the biggest contributors to unwell reptiles.

I got him 2 and a half days ago. Yesterday I tried to feed him and managed to get around 4 tiny crickets in him which he hunted himself. I had to handle him a bit because the tank he came in was super dirty and I had to take him out of there to clean it. This morning he ate maybe 5-6 more dusted and gutloaded crickets. I can’t help but stress that he isn’t eating enough. He does come out and bask sometimes. I do my best to leave him alone and just let him chill out. Am I doing things okay?

      It sounds like everything you are doing is appropriate. Handling a young/new beardie for hygiene and health checks is the exception to the no handling rule. In 2-3 weeks he will be eating a normal amount of insects. If you have any concerns a health check by a veterinarian is always recommended. Get them to do a parasite check in their poo.

      @@CookiesCritters hi! Thank you :) I have a great update, we’ve switched over to wax worms and Phoenix worms and his appetite is big! He eats them up. He’s eating so much more now and is going to the bathroom regularly too! He’s also out and about so much more. I’m still limiting handling unless I absolutely need to as I still want to let him chill and get acclimated but yeah :) he’s doing so much better

    I just came across this video , I’m not sure if information in techniques and causes have changed since then . Since day one I’ve been handling her , I’ve had her for two weeks now .her size is as if she’s a few weeks to a month old .
    She ate the first day I brought her home so I figure we passed the get to know stage she’ll eat once in a blue and I’ve been stressing . So I water her so she drinks water , she has a bowl on the cook side of her tank but she only chills around it .
    I don’t want to stress her but I don’t want her to feel like shes being ignored . There’s no way for me to really tell if she’s hungry unless I try to feed her and this is daily . She really small and I just don’t want to fuck up and god forbid she gains health issues or passes from not eating . Animals will do that to you .

      I feed her Roman lettuce , wax and meal worms . Ill put water in the greens or worms just to trigger her appetite but it don’t always work . She ate about 5 times since I got her . I try to feed her every day, day and night but She mainly drinks water when I place droplets on her (spray bottle) . I want to try peppers next since they’re rich in color and taste .. but again this is the “ I want her to eat because I’m worried “ issue , I know to give her space which I do , she just stares at me and angels her head at every sound she hears even me talk or talking to her .
      She closes her eyes when I stroke her , even when she’s just laying on me all flat 🥹 … but I’ve read it means she’s scared and I’ve read it means she’s comfortable… I just don’t know . I thought I did all the research I could before getting her , even made sure her inclosure was set up hot and ready for her first day . I don’t know if she’s happy or stressed but I don’t want her to feel disconnected due to lack of socializing

      Hi Nicole. What are the temperatures in the enclosure at? Lack of appetite and inactivity are due to stress and low temperatures. Tell us more about the enclosure and we will be happy to help.

      @@CookiesCritters hey there. Unfortunately he passed away. I think he was either too young or sick. His temps in basking spot, and warm and cool side were all where they should be. He wasn’t that active when I got him and I thought he would perk up but he didn’t. I just adopted one from a reputable breeder that has a health guarantee for 30 days and I know what to look out for now.

      That is perfectly normal behaviour for a new beardie. The first 3 days they typically don’t eat much if anything at all.
      Don’t handle it for the first 2 weeks until it’s eating properly.
      Persist with feeding a few insects at a time, and please don’t leave insects in their enclosure at night.

      @@triple_threat6368 make sure your beardie is only getting heat at night if the temperatures are going down to 10 degrees C (50 Fahrenheit).
      Daytime temps should be up around 40-43 degrees C (103-110 F) at the basking spot. Heat promotes appetite and digestion.

    I’ve been stressed. I’ve been feeding my juvenile/baby dragon small crickets and small dubia roaches but the pet store I go to was out of small crickets so I got medium crickets. The woman also said that superworms would be ok for my baby dragon just one every other day or so. So I fed him about 4 or 5 medium crickets and he ate that superworm. This is going on the second day where he isn’t eating. I seen online where it said baby dragons should never eat super worm as it can cause impaction. He has used the bathroom fine and I think he might have pooped or threw up undigested piece of super worm. Should I be worried that he’s not wanting to eat or if I overfed him. He’s the size of yours in the video just fatter bc of the crickets. Been hand feeding with tong and also throwing some in closure

    • @CookiesCritters

      Hi. Yes we never feed our beardies superworms until they are around 6 months. They are hard to digest and can cause impaction. The larger food items will definitely account for the lower quantity eaten and will take longer to digest. Don’t stress too much about your little one not eating again the following day as it’s probably still full.
