I personally love that Rick explained the Bechdel test in a way to make us understand that the makers of R&M understand what the test is and why it's a thing, just to make sure that we understand that they're not making fun of the test itself.
The episode shows that the test is stupid. You can do a sexist story that passes the test, as Rick and Morty do. And you can make a story for example about a woman who tries to escape from a toxic relationship in which she doesn't talk with any woman, and it will be a lot more of the taste of a feminist.
@@harlizuga that depends on the way you interpret the test. The way it's classicly described is definitely stupid in this way, but what the test is actually for is to check if the female characters are actual characters instead of just objects to be interacted with. The intention of the test is reasonable, it's just that the best-known interpretation of it is stupid
The only thing that’s very clear in this mental labyrinth of an episode is that they’re lampooning it and calling it stupid, generally any way you try to apply a “test” to story writing is easily bypassed and like in this case, you can always write a story that completely reverses it’s intent and still pass it, likewise you can usually do the opposite just as easily and still not pass it. Stories along with any art have infinite contexts so hard rules don’t work well with creativity

This is what happened to South Park in an experimental season of the show where each episode continued the storyline of the previous for one long cohesive story. Half the fan-base hated it for breaking the episodic nature of the show.

While watching the video, I had an idea I wanted to share: What if there was a story train with junctions on the tracks? Would that mean there was a story train with 2 formulas for the stories?
Yeah, most of the time, atleast in my experience, writing stories is to evoke all my hidden feelings into that piece. Like, I'm not really creative when it comes to artworks, but in writing, it feels free. Writing all the thoughts going inside my head, writing my own world. :)

Two random thoughts came to mind and they just linger in my mind: 1) There's no hidden meaning to "the fifth wall", it's just "the fourth wall plus one", rendering the concept silly in a Monty Python kind of way. 2) A show that comes to mind having an incredibly creative and daring first season then getting sabotaged by network greed taking it over is Ren & Stimpy on Nickelodeon back in the early 90s.
@@benjaf1058 I would say its more a "Aint Too Proud To Beg" moment. Which means, no matter how prideful you or your character is, there will come a time eventually when they or you beg for help to someone you loathe (ie Rick to God/ Jesus)
My theory : this version of rick and morty died on the train. The last scene with morty and the toy train IS the story breaking the 5th wall like what the storylord said. The jesus scene is the tool used to break the 5th wall. The storylord won. This version of rick and morty is not our rick and morty. Theyre the rick and morty whose been featured in every ads. In every ads they keep refusing to sellout and keeps trying to break free of the ads. The train represent the show itself and how the writers or the studio using it writing story after story just so they can get ads deal, and this rick and morty is the actual rick and morty they use to promote the ads. They somehow broke the dimension from their ads universe into the canon story device trying to break it so they dont have to make more ads. Ofc they failed cuz if theyve succeeded the show would have been ended. The machine at the end broke the 5th wall and pushing them back into their ads universe but at a cost of their soul. Theyre now a complicit part of the ads without their original rebellious nature/soul. There. Every loop of the train is one episode, the passengers are the writers with head writers being the storylord and the ticket guy,
OK, but that still leaves out the Harmon formula. And honestly if you read the formula in detail, you immediately make the connections to this particular episode of Rick and Morty. Also, if yours is to be believable you will have to account why it starts at the very middle and ends, without a start (if they are R&M from the ads, there has to be an explanation on the beginning, implying that they'd have to be on the train for quite a while already). Not to mention at the end the train derailed, which, if you ask me is yet another metaphor for Harmon and Roiland trying to stay unpredictable and yet still be consistent with the general feel of Rick and Morty.
@@maltorian1258 ofc they use the harmon formula. The train is the actual story device For the canon story. And every ads of rick and morty starts in the middle of the story without a beginning. Thats the nature of rick and morty from the ads universe. Theyre just put in a situation without explanation and they tried to get out of it. Thats how they exist.
Googled it. I already knew the definition but I thought I’d give the EXACT explanation of what it is. According to Google: Canon (fiction) ... In fiction, canon is the material accepted as officially part of the story in the fictional universe of that story. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of fan fiction.
@@azha242 well it is meant that we will never know whats cannon in Rick and Morty since any given episode could be like the story train, this show is like: Nothing is true everything permitted
I knew that this whole episode was a farce when 'Evil Mortys' Rick Army was not wearing the same uniform he gave them at the end of the Citadel episode.
Kinda-sorta. Most modern story theorists, Harmon included, owe a lot to Campbell, but he's by no means the sole source. You can map the Story Circle to the Hero's Journey, but if you look at Harmon's expansions, you'll see other elements drawn from turn-of-the-century French structuralism, Baudrillard, Save the Cat, and plenty more.
matpat: everyday 2020 has something to worry about me: true matpat: first it was the super virus me: yeah matpat: then the us goverment basically confirmed that aliens are real with declassified footage of UFOs me: wait wat?
Hi Matt Pack, I actually don't think the story clock structure is absent at all in the interdimensional cable episode despite Rick referring to is as a one-off. In that episode, although the title is "Interdimensional cable" the true story clock narrative follows the relationship between Jerry and Beth. If you map their progression throughout the episode it matches the structure Dan Harmon uses almost perfectly- but what makes it different from some others is that they used it as a base, so they can then have their other characters (Rick and Morty) do anything they wanted and deliver as many random jokes and ideas that the audiences love. It creates the illusion that the entire episode was random joke, while at the same time providing a fulfilling a character arc within Jerry and Beth behind the scenes subconsciously.
Why has no one got that if the story train website went live, THAT would have been them breaking the 5th wall in the episode, by effecting our reality.
I honestly feel like this might be the most important rick and morty episode in the entirety of the show. After you went in depth with it, I not only 100% agree with your points about it, it also gives me a certain amount of closure no matter what direction the show ends up going in. No matter how it ends, this episode is here to make a statement and even tease an alternative ending. It also makes me feel like fan fiction is actually a good idea in this instance.
I thought "breaking the fifth wall" was when an actor references another show or production they're in. So when Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool talks about Green Lantern or if Justin Roiland in Rick n Morty were to reference Gravity Falls etc
You should have included the fact that the "bechdel test" was originally a comedy cartoon made in 1985 by Alison Bechdel. She also said "The Bechdel test was a joke... I didn’t intend for it to become a real gauge’. Love these R&M theories, great videos :)
Great episode I love how they make the viewers really sit and think deep about what is going on every episode is about the world we are living in and how complex it can be
2:16 prying something the characters would never do. flash back when rick prayed to god that his device would work when he was trapped in space and need the neck collar to work(right after he says f god) but still he still prayed
I have a theory: The second half of Season 4 is going to rehash all the "best of" moments. Episode 6 was the new "Inter-dimensional Cable" and while it was rather fresh in many ways, it fully acknowledged it was hitting some of the same old beats. The conversation where Morty says "we don't need to overthink" is almost exactly like he said it in the past, and a few of the moments come off as recycled. Much more so in the following episode (which to its credit acknowledges itself as a rehash by alluding to Purge Planet and Gear World) when they rehash 'Summer goes off and becomes great' and 'alien assimilation misunderstood as an invasion and/or war'. If the creators truly do feel that they're being stretched thin and squeezed dry from this, they shouldn't have signed that 9 season deal. If however, they're just trying to use this as a way to tell people not to expect them to be miracle workers, then I'm totally ok with it. I think this episode was about as close to 'perfect' as you can with that concept. Looking forward to how it turns out from here, regardless!
As a matter of fact, people tend to forget UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object, which could be any flying object in general. Even a flying plastic bag can be an UFO if it wasn’t identified.
I like reading about theories, but I don't count on them to be true. For me, I just want some kind of conclusion to the story, as long as it's handled in a "non-screw you" kind of way I'll be satisfied. Rick and Morty is action and hilarious filled. They can turn any bland concept into a bizarre masterpiece of cartoon entertainment. I don't need Evil Morty to be related to our Rick in any way (other then he just doesn't like Ricks). But I still want to see some kind of clash between them since they have some history and the writers brought him back so there has to be some kind of continuation there. I understand the writers have a lot of people to please, but when they create a canon continuous story behind the one-off gag structure, I do then desire to see that story unfold in some capacity.
It's a good thing they've got 64 episodes and a good few years left to dive into more of that stuff. They will get to that stuff even that get to it, to force it at any point would likely reduce it's quality.
I think the side-story with Beth and Summer killing the scorpions is also about how you can technically pass the Bechdel test, but do so in a half-assed, non-sensical way. That writing up something lazy just to pass this test shouldn't really be considered an achievement and wasn't the point of the test in the first place.

There.
Every loop of the train is one episode, the passengers are the writers with head writers being the storylord and the ticket guy,
Makes sense, how is this not pinned though..-
No more theories, the writers don’t like it
OK, but that still leaves out the Harmon formula.

It creates the illusion that the entire episode was random joke, while at the same time providing a fulfilling a character arc within Jerry and Beth behind the scenes subconsciously.
the A plot of those EPs IS the cable their watching, the B plot is just there to do something with the characters that wouldn't partake in such event

But he didn't success because Jesus come to save him.
Man the story train was so confusing with every thing especially when Rick talked about buying stuff

Ghostwriter...
The King sorry but all that is gone, we kept telling them how to write the show.

I think the side-story with Beth and Summer killing the scorpions is also about how you can technically pass the Bechdel test, but do so in a half-assed, non-sensical way. That writing up something lazy just to pass this test shouldn't really be considered an achievement and wasn't the point of the test in the first place.
