fun fact about immortal, a fan told the creator in a letter that they felt immortal looked like lincoln, so the creator decided to add it into the lore
@@VlaxorVandal savage is just an immortal human from the cavemen days. He can't fly or use super strength. Although in hindsight Vandal Savage would beat immortal In my opinion
The best part about Season 1 to Season 2 is you see Nolan's reaction from the line of "You, Dad. I'd have you." There's no time jump. We get to see the torment that line sends him through as we follow him through space. He completely loses all faith in his cause because he realized Mark was right and that they'd still have each other to help each other through their grief of losing all their friends and loved ones and watching Earth turn to dust. It finally cracked Nolan's psyche and he almost kills himself because of what he did to his own son.
I loved it when in the alternate timeline Mark is able to get him to break his psyche also without getting the guardians of the globe killed. Showed how the relationship was always there and how much smarter Mark was becoming
Friendship would have to be your saving grace because scientifically people's minds change after a couple years and you would not have the same person that you met originally I think it's like people's personalities change once every 10 years or something like that...
I love Invincible because on the surface it seems like yet another superhero show that says that the very notion of a superhero helping people is absurd, but when watching the show it makes you root for Mark when he becomes the heroic persona Omni-Man was merely pretending to be. It's not a deconstruction of the superhero genre; it's a reconstruction of it.
Nolan doesn't completely lack empathy, though. There are a couple moments where he shows regret for his actions and how he's hurt the people around him. When Cecil tells him the the guardians were his friends, so he knew that Nolan didn't do it for the fun of it. And as he says this, he looks away and does the same thing when Cecil brings up debbie and mark. There's another moment when he thinks about attacking debbie, before snapping out of it and is disappointed and angry at himself for even considering it.
Yeah he even is more empathetic in season 2. He even shows empathy towards a alien race that has a 6 month lifespan. He was taught to think that way, he even acted barbaric when he was younger as well.
Some good details. I had to deal with anger management in my teen years, and these reactions really are close to what you feels/acts when confronted with the harm you caused, and you feel ashamed of yourself.
The whole neuro plasticity premises against his ability to change is a little weak. Additionally, as Viltrumites become older, they become stronger - they regenerate quicker too as seen in the show with Mark (and later in the comics).
Nolan and Mark have such an interesting dynamic with season 2. We've seen evil men turn good and our heroes broken, but having a father-son dynamic where each party is in pain. Yet, Mark capitalizes on his anger to shield him from pain, utterly unaware of how similar he is to Nolan, a unique storytelling device. I can't wait to see the second half of season 2.
1000 years could come and go, and the Matpat era of theories will never feel insignificant. Thank you, the entire theory team, for so many wonderful years
Some can relate to less intelligent recognize sentences. In other beings and time they have and time they are . Like insects. It actually came up in the last episode with those bug people
Really puts things into perspective when shows like this and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, show the long living characters as having a really poor sense of time, our lifespan really isn't that much in comparison to theirs.
And the fact that fraction is only going to get even shorter as time goes on due to his aging rate just getting slower and slower makes it a whole lot worse.
On that life span comparison, the show itself does a pretty good job bringing Omni Man's perspective to us in season 2 episode 4 with the bug people, which they said only live to an equivalent of 1 human year only minutes later, we see them slaughtered by other viltrumites It was almost as if the show was asking if we feel the same empathy for a species that lives that short It was crazy to see the number of people who were watching it say something along the lines of "well you were gonna die in a month or so anyways"
Even from the little bit of show we have seen, Nolan’s character is shaped by social conditioning that he begins to change as soon as mark is born. The special that shows Mark and Nolan early on, Nolan visibly shudders at the thought of harming Mark when he’s so young. Neural plasticity is heavily influenced by usage in cognitively normal individuals and can be improved in individuals with impairments. Earth being the first planet Nolan is used to conquer in the way it is all the way to his interactions with the bug people emphasize that.
I honestly feel like Nolan's speech to mark about how he'll outlive everything is just Nolan trying to convince himself that what he is doing is right. He loved Debbie, made connections with people and enjoy everything. But he knew what he had to do eventually at a certain point, it just sounds more like he's attempting to convince himself that it does not matter because its barely any of his lifespan and its so little that he thinks he just shouldn't care since the planet is doomed at the moment anyways.
He's not entirely wrong in that assessment from his own point of view, but as Darkblood shows, those who judge him after death will not see his atrocities as inconsequential just because he lives a really long time.
@@23Raind yeah he’s not wrong about his assessment, but he still knows he doesn’t like thinking like that and he’s saying that mostly to convince himself and mark, cause if mark agrees with him then he basically can say someone agrees with him and his way of thinking isn’t wrong.
Yup, that entire fight wasn't against Mark, it was against himself. He wanted to convince *himself* what he was doing was still the right thing to do and he realized it wasn't.
14:40 The difference is one heavily related to the themes of Invincible; Humanity. Immortal has lived _alongside humanity_ for his entire lifespan. He's had wives, kids, grandkids, brothers in arms and kings and subjects. He's _lived lives_ in all the human ways, and keeps doing so. Whereas Viltrumites? They've only known Violence, War, Conquest, Might makes right, "If he was weak then he deserved to die". They've been so seperated from the human experience for so long that it's almost impossible to snap them out of it. It takes 20 years of love and humanity to make even one of them doubt themselves. Where Immortal has known all of the human experience, Viltrumites have known only war.
@@anthonyortiz350True and also who knows how Viltrumites brains are set up to process emotions or other things. I mean, we have insight and know they are similar to humans but they could still be vastly different in those aspects. Like they could be easily swayed one way or another when it comes to emotions and this is why we see Omni man swayed by his son by basically one sentence and other viltrumites preferring to have families when they stay on earth for one of their first times and explains why they were ok with killing the weak, and probably family because they were swayed on viltrum to think a certain way.. Plus the first part of this theory, when he compared them to humans and their brains not being able to create the same amount of synapses to when they were babies or young children is also unknown considering Viltrumites get stronger and increase in other ways as they get older basically opposite of humans. They could create even more as they get older because of this, or even because of their advances in medicine and their abilities to cure disease to change their brain chemistry and other things as the such.. who knows their story could of gone anywhere and could of made sense and explained in these types of ways.. Sorry if some of this doesn't make sense lol I'm writing it has I'm kind of falling asleep lol
I think it's pretty clear that, from a thematic point of view, Mark gets his superhero name not because of his powers or winning track record (he does get beat up a lot) but rather from his human values. By holding on to his humanity and not giving in to the feelings that would make him more like a true Viltrumite. It's how he won the fight against his dad by attrition. As long as he has that, he will live up to his name.
The entire reason why Mark can beat the two big bads at the end of the comics is because of only his human values. Sure, him being a viltrumite helps, but its being a human with meaningful attatchments that lets him beat them
Bro, as someone in the field of health science and with a sister in the field of psychology, I applaud you in your use of biology to make your point. As always, your research is impeccable
I think my favorite thing about Invincible is, not only does it show how we need empathy to stay connected and not become monsters; it also shows (later in the comics) that there are people who DO NOT CARE. They can’t be reasoned with, they can’t be bargained with and they certainly shouldn’t be in positions of power. We have to be responsible and police these people ourselves, otherwise we are responsible for the damage they wreak.
it's a perfect commercial, because it gets those who wanna watch the show into it if they're on the edge and it's also educating the psychological aspect of the show
I watched this with my dad because we watched Invincible together and he was really open to the idea of brain development and empathy. Thanks to this episode he's started going to therapy again. Thanks MatPat
Just pointing out that if Immortal was alive at 3,000 BC it means he's 5,000 years old, not 3k as stated earlier in the video when comparing lifespans.
MatPat also aluppwd the part where Omni-Man went through the portal to chase after the Faulkans or whatever they were called and while there the perception of time moved faster compared to Earth making Omni-man older too
@@Antonio-ys5zd True but when talking about people who can outlive planets- i dont feel its necessarily an issue, plus given he wanted to give us a relatable timeframe using 3000 instead of a number magnitudes larger makes it easy. becuase going to 500 almost doubles to number and shortens his example from 1.6 years to maybe at best 11 months. thats alot less
This video was full of contradictions, wrong math and illogical points… For instance according to Mattpats math Omniman would mourn his wife for about 1.6 years before he went on… or the immortal Being empathetic… Which is definitely not true at the beginning of the show… In fact there are so many mistakes in this video that he disproves himself in the same video that I have to wonder if he even watched
@@AidanClutter true and even if it wasn't accurate , does that matter? the channel is an education channel- its honestly more about what he tries to teach, and i think just from what he was teaching it was a good episode
I didn't even consider Immortal and taking his experience as an example. Wow. Immortal is an awesome wildcard. Who, after 500 years, could still also be there. A beacon and example for Mark.
@@23Raind ohh 😯😮 yeah I actually forgot about that incident. Spoiler Hopefully though by choosing to change the future by having robot as a brain to help well ❤️🩹 will avoid that outcome!
Well I guess the closest example of lifespans is the way we look at rats, they live much shorter than us, so much so that even if we kept them as pets we’d eventually forget them. Omniman literally refers to his human wife as a “pet”, meaning that her death may hurt him for a while but he’d outlive the guilt, quite literally how we see animals with short lifespans, we’d definitely miss them but it would only be when we’re reminded of them
My grandma had like 3 kids that died as infants, noone forgot about them and their graves are cleaned every month. I get your argument but it really isn't universal truth.
@@phucdisshiet6838kids would have the same lifespan as the person who birthed them da f how does that relate to their theory. Omni man literally is conflicted by the fact that his son will be with him through it all cause they have the same life span
Viltrumites have their own healing factor aswell that lets them survive near death experiences all the time. it may not be on the immortals level but it would still in theory help their brains slowly regenerate more synapses across their long life spans.
That's the point, in the comic he is way apathetic and says that he "sometimes" things his dad was right and many times choses to be selfish, which is called out by Robot, but at the same time he shown to chose being better and be self aware to be better.
fun fact mark usually joins omni man when it comes to taking over the world because most versions of mark are narcissistic but mark prime (the one from the comic/tv) is one of if not the only mark who shows empathy and puts others first.
@@ContagiousSponge Yes/no. Multiverse does not necessarily imply infinite, and considering the whatthefuck nature of it, there could be weird math rules in the backgrounds that we don't know about regardings the odds of events.
@@ContagiousSpongeNo that’s not quite right. Let’s say you have an infinite amount of numbers, despite the fact it’s infinite, you’re still going to get more numbers without 4 than there are with 4. So not all infinites are equal, some are more likely to occur than others.
@@ContagiousSponge The probability of a mark becoming evil is far higher than of a mark becoming good. Sure, there might be infinite versions of both, but that doesn't mean the amount of them being good and evil are the same.
Its cool to see Matpat nailing the points on the head here, especially considering that Nolan gained empathy after having a second child and forming new relationships
I've recently read the invincible comics and honestly the concept of immortality quite scary, the immortal is one of the biggest examples. After year of watching his close friends and family die including his own deaths, he's become distant he didn't want to make any meaningful connections because he was scared he would lose those he loved again and go through the same thing. Hope the same doesn't happen to invincible but, you never know.
Yeah that future timeline with Evil Dictator Immortal is so fascinating - and then Mark solves it by giving him an immortal RexRobot....'s brain in a jar.
We all know omni man is right, that’s what makes Mark such an amazing character. He knows the pain he’ll face but does it anyway and sticks to his ideals.
@@ramonandrajo6348Oh ffs, yall fightin the imaginary woke boogeyman again. What is woke in the series again? Amber, they fixed her in season 2...and that's it.
This is a really nice theory considering in Season 2 Nolan struggles for a moment on why he cares so much for a species that lives for only a year after seeing a bunch of them dead. It's brief because him and Mark get attacked but he really had a hard time trying to come to terms with it. Empathy.
Once again, i think you would do incredible things with a Comics Theory channel. The amount of lore and history that are apart of many comic franchises paired with the amount of artistic analysis one can do with their unique combinations of art and writing, i think its ripe for your types of theories.
This is actually a good point that gets explored later in the comics, Mark being together with Eve, that is basically also immortal, and so helps him keep his humanity always there by his side and prevents him from becoming tyrant like others. The same happens with the Immortal, at some point he begins to lose it ruling the planet, and Mark gets an idea to help him keep his sanity as the millenia go by.
@@leonardopantano5220 I also realised that, Eve (assuming Marks death is stressful enough) could also extend Marks life to near immortality, so in theory, they, and their family, would live forever, or as long as Eve can do it.
"Explored" might be overstating it. The revelation that Eve is actually essentially immortal DOES come exactly 12 pages from the end of the series so....I dunno. lol
What Omni Man says about humans being pets for him actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it: We love them and may even consider them part of our family, but we are a totally different species and outlife them. Just think about how squirrels must see humans: A tree is everything they need to live a happy life, what maniac would destroy forests just to build houses?! They cant understand our goals because they think much simpler and dont see the world as we see it. So maybe for Omni Man we are the dumb squirrels, dumb and cute, but unable to see the bigger picture. This does not mean he is right, but his thoughts all make sense from his pov
@@peeeeeeeeeeaf they still dont understand, all they see for hundreds of years is people living, and they don't care about the same things we do, To the tortoise were just temperary things that can either help them or harm them
Maybe we should stop doing things that destroy the world of life forms with simpler minds than us then? If we want superior beings to come down to our level, we shouldn't expect lower beings to evolve to ours.
I could tell from episode one that Invincible season 2 was going to be great. It even seems like they have a great villain origin story. Angstrom Levy seemed like a truly good person that wanted to help not only his world but many, many, many others. And when you think about it, he saved Mark's life when he took the helmet off. If he did not, the Maulers would have beat him to death. Even when he was in the middle of accomplishing his ultimate goal, Angstrom cared about someone trying to stop him enough to try and save that person's life. Now that he has the memories of all his alternate selves, combined with the pain and disfigurement he is suffering through, he now is consumed with hatred for Mark. Keep in mind that in most dimensions, Mark actually ends up siding with his father to take over the Earth, so Angstrom has a lot of memories of Mark doing terrible things.
Ok but like hes also an idiot, why didnt he just drop portals beneath the maulers to teleport them away, he teleported them in with the helmet on, why not teleport them out?
This is why I really appreciate matpat its an understanding of the human mind that makes him sound so genuine like he’s actually talking to the viewer y’know in a way I lack empathy if someone is just rude I lack empathy for them one time one of them said there cousin died and I laughed but if someone is kind and genuine I treat them with respect and empathy
I have been waiting for a long time for Matpat to make a video about Invincible. It's my favorite animated show on television, and seeing one of my favorite youtuber making a theory about this show is truly incredible!
Bugs seems like conscious being and I respect their lives as living creatures for the time they have and. That actually was brought up in the show. With those bug Aliens who only live a year
@18:39 As a 28 year-old man, I can already relate to this main takeaway; I vividly remember watching a random kid on the street being amazed at the world and the things I myself was once amazed with, and how that scene felt particularly refreshing for me in the moment.
Right there with you, but I can say that while it won't just passively happen anymore with good planning and preparation you can find yourself just as amazed.
Empathy being something that is only capable of being learned at a young age makes Nolan saying "I'm not supposed to feel this way," all the more tragic.
another argument against Omni man Being not empathetic is how he starts to love on the other planet he goes to. They’re wiped out by the viltrumites, he starts crying. He actually feels for those people he even has a son with another person on that planet, and I think that really shows that he hasn’t fully lost that empathy
As a father struggling with my emotions, torn between expectations and feelings, the pain expressed by Nolan when he leaves Earth, choosing his son over the empire, is something that always brings tears to me. This scene is powerful, and I hope I'll have the courage to always choose my family first.
This was hands down one of my favorite film theory videos. It not only had one of my favorite shows (CANT WAIT for you to do The Boys too!), but learning about how brains work like this was mind blowing (no pun intended). Great job Matt Pat and everyone else in the theory team!
Dr Who also does a great job of tackling this idea of immortality, with Jack/Boe, Lady Me, Clara, the Master and the Doctor himself all offering different views on the same issue.
This is already one of my favourite Film Theory videos. The combination of science and comic book nerdiness is why I subscribed in the first place. Great job matpat. 👏🏾👏🏾
Based on the comics, because I assume the show will still follow them very closely with what we’ve seen already, the main factors are mark being from earth and his relationships. You find out that Nolan really did change from his time on earth, and all of the other viltrumites also change because of their time on earth. They can and do experience empathy, but because they were never shown it as a child, the viltrumites needed to experience it first hand to apply it
But on topic, I actually experience (kinda) the Omni Man 2 years span. I work at a university, and my student workers who I see every day generally disappear forever after 1-3 years. The first 2 students that I "lost" to graduation I literally cried. I saw myself in them, tried to give life advice and such. Now several years later I can't even be bothered to learn most of their names or even tell them apart.
I love it when people replicate/parody the almost-meme title of Invincible when they are talking about it. That whole thing of cutting off mid-sentence to show the word or any title at hand always gets me
Another reason why Mark is good is because he was given a talk by his mom, Debbie that humble him and made him less narcissistic which could be one of the only reasons why our Mark is good
Outside of neurology, I think socially speaking Nolan's context means he didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't right, but with all information avaliable in both the show and comics at the time of his fight with Mark he was doing the only sensible thing.
Its taboo, but THANK YOU for finally bringing up the issue of Nolan throwing away his whole life for a mere 1-2% fraction of his lifetime. Though its not everything, from a logical perspective its not reasonable for him to throw away his viltrum life for that.
this is further proven not only by the fact that omniman has a change of heart in season 2, but that he shows mark what it feels like to be with someone with such a short lifespan, as just as omniman is to humans, humans are to those bug creature thingys. its really good thematic storytelling and i cant wait to see how they evolve upon it in the rest of s2
This perfectly explains why characters like Homelander and Reverse Flash are so evil and monstrous. Homelander grew up in a lab with no empathy or healthy relationships, before being put on a leash by Vought. Reverse Flash, meanwhile, spent so much time on studying the Flash that he never gave himself a chance to experience compassion or healthy relationships (the fact that Flash also humiliated him doesn't help either).
I just realized the metaphor of the thraxans. The thraxans are like what humans are to viltrumites. I love this so much and ive read all of the comics, can't wait to see how the show adapts and creates new concepts
Ive never felt this way about any other subject that MatPat had covered on any of his channels but… am I the only one who would actually pay just to see him cover invincible in like an episode to episode basis and to see his reactions? I know he doesn’t do that type of content, but it would be fascinating imo
Keep in mind, the 1.6 year estimate is based on a 3000 age estimate. If Nolan was any less then 3000 years, he’d probably not have saiid “thousands of years”. Three thousand is pretty much the bare minimum age. He’s probably much more than 3000 years old, and that 1.6 is likely to be a lot lower.
@anna.owo. Im pretty sure he is older than 3000, how? Because we know how Invincible looks after 500 years, he looks like a man on his twenties, why is this important? Because we know Viltrumites age slower the older they get, which means that in order to look like Omni Man, Mark will have to live much more
The 1.6 estimate was also based on 60 years together, which they haven't been together nearly that long at that point in the series so the actual percentage would be way less
@@eduparada970I am not really sure about how Mark looks. Cory's style is very different from Ottley's and it's difficult to make comparisons. I honestly see it as more of "just passing 30", but you never know.

I think just being on Earth even for a relatively short time will have a big impact on Nolan's ability to feel empathy. He went from a planet full of violence and devastation to a planet full of heroes. He arrived and he was thought of as a a hero because he kept trying to protect his claim to the planet but people thought it was heroism. If he's on Earth for 60 years that's equivalent to 1.6 years of his lifespan? That can still have a big impact and he can see how much humanity can achieve
@@PhantomGato-v- oh no I'm not arguing it changed him completely. I'm saying it had an impact on him. I'm not sure if you've seen Season 2 but when you do you'll see changes.

@@sebastianacevedo9444 I, on the other hand, actually do agree with the argument. I think Nolan's had a complete change of heart, from only being loyal to his home to finally loving the little ephemeral parts of life. It's a good change.

I dated a girl for only a year and a half. She took her life. As someone who has spent time with some for only 2% of their total life. I wouldn't have given it up for anything. I just generally feel sorry for them for having to deal with that
This video was great, and I did have this expirience during Covid 19. A lot of people just stayed at home and did practically nothing. People lost empathy or became lonely, and I noticed that after everybody went outside and lived their normal lives again. You can notice the change in character, really cool video and very deep.
The film "the man from earth" explores what immortality might seem like from the perspective of a man born during the Paleolithic age. Might be worth looking into
Are we sure the Viltrumites aren't just able to breed with whatever they can get their hands on? Omni-Man had a kid with that weird bug lady too; so maybe they are just genetically compatible with most things, like goblins or orcs.
It's more like their not allowed to breed with non genetically similar species, plus bugs are still made of carbon it's not like Nolan could impregnate star people.
how i took it was that human and viltrumite dna is compatible enough that when it comes to their offspring, mark ages/appears as a human/ages like a viltrumite would. when it comes to oliver, he ages very fast but its just slowed down due to the dna of his mother
I think its that they can interbreed with plenty of species. But only genetically compatible ones will get full Viltrimite powers. His kid with the bug lady won't have super powers.
One thing I noticed is that Nolan is as fast as the speedster in the first episode and the speedster experiences time incredibly slowly compared to normal humans. So Nolan has not only lived thousands of years but one minute to him could feel like an hour or more . This would be incredibly exhausting for him living among humans that much slower. So when he kills the pilot and says “now or in 50yrs what difference does it make” to him that’s both a really long time but also no time at all. The same way to us a 3hour lecture is a long time but also no time at all in comparison to our entire lives.
An important detail about the Immortal is that he doesn’t have a solid grasp on his memories. He pretty much looses the entirety of his memories. He keeps things like muscle memory so fighting styles and languages but actual memories aren’t there. So while Immortal is 3000+ years old mentally he’s only as old as his last death plus his age when he gained his powers.
I do not think he forgets every time he dies, he does remember his previous team but like you do not remember everything you did when you were 10, he does not remember what he did when he was 100
@TheDrexxus I think the bug thing is weird too, but I think I understand why the author did it. They bugs are there specifically because they only live 1 year. It helps put Mark in a situation where he can empathize with his father. Omni-man's whole deal was that he and mark will live for thousands of years so none of those people on earth really mattered. Mark is still only like 18 so he has no concept of what that is like. But now he has met a species that only lives for ONE year, and he has lived nearly 20 times their lifespan already even though he isn't even old. Even you guys reacting to it were trivializing those bug people's lives because they're so short lived saying things like his new wife will only live one year so it doesn't even matter. I think that is the whole point of the bug people. To give the audience, as well as Mark, some perspective. Omni-Man felt about humans how yall feel about those bugs. Thats why killing them all didn't really matter much. This comment is a repost. I wanted to drop this from another channels comment section because I feel it adds to the conversation. I always hear Omni-Man talk about making lemonade
There’s an edit online of the lemon rant over Omni man and it fits perfectly its wild.

60 years for Omni-Man equaling 1.6 human years is actually quite horrifying when you think about it.
That actually reminds me of my first girlfriend. We were together for about a year.
And the fact that fraction is only going to get even shorter as time goes on due to his aging rate just getting slower and slower makes it a whole lot worse.
Imagine literally dating, marrying and having a child with someone within the span of 1.6 years: That's what happened with Debbie from Nolan's pov.
On that life span comparison, the show itself does a pretty good job bringing Omni Man's perspective to us in season 2 episode 4 with the bug people, which they said only live to an equivalent of 1 human year
only minutes later, we see them slaughtered by other viltrumites
It was almost as if the show was asking if we feel the same empathy for a species that lives that short
It was crazy to see the number of people who were watching it say something along the lines of "well you were gonna die in a month or so anyways"
Honestly it's even more tragic those people died because they lived so long relatively only to be slaughtered by a alien threat suddenly
wow we really are no better. Just biased to be on the human side
So basically there is a life span:empathy ratio.
Im comics they live for about 9 months
Anyone who has had a dog that aged out knows.
Regardless of how you interpret it, it's still a valid question. What will Mark have in 500 years? Or even less than 100?
Yup, that entire fight wasn't against Mark, it was against himself. He wanted to convince *himself* what he was doing was still the right thing to do and he realized it wasn't.
@@insertname9736 his kids. It was always pretty obvious. Kids, grandkids, ect.

And it also shows how to be good is an active choice and not you born to be.

Omni Man is logically right, but morally wrong.
Another reason why Mark is good is because he was given a talk by his mom, Debbie that humble him and made him less narcissistic which could be one of the only reasons why our Mark is good
We actually see Mark doing pretty well for himself after 500 years in the comics
My favorite bit is when Eve dies and just reincarnates lol
Outside of neurology, I think socially speaking Nolan's context means he didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't right, but with all information avaliable in both the show and comics at the time of his fight with Mark he was doing the only sensible thing.
This went waaaaay deeper into human psychology and development than I expected, and it was great.
Its taboo, but THANK YOU for finally bringing up the issue of Nolan throwing away his whole life for a mere 1-2% fraction of his lifetime. Though its not everything, from a logical perspective its not reasonable for him to throw away his viltrum life for that.
An old school style of Film Theory. Love to see it.
this is further proven not only by the fact that omniman has a change of heart in season 2, but that he shows mark what it feels like to be with someone with such a short lifespan, as just as omniman is to humans, humans are to those bug creature thingys. its really good thematic storytelling and i cant wait to see how they evolve upon it in the rest of s2
I appreciated Matpat's analysis of All Star describing the dread of growing older.
"the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'"
"fed to the rules and I hit the ground running. Didn't make sense not to live for fun. Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb"
"So much to do, so much to see, so what wrong with taking the backstreet?"
"You'll never if you don't go. You'll never shine if you don't glow"
"Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play"

Well played.
Keep in mind, the 1.6 year estimate is based on a 3000 age estimate. If Nolan was any less then 3000 years, he’d probably not have saiid “thousands of years”. Three thousand is pretty much the bare minimum age. He’s probably much more than 3000 years old, and that 1.6 is likely to be a lot lower.
he is over 2.000 according to Wiki, nothing implies he is over 3.000. he was born after the civil war or he was a baby back then.

I’m so happy you made an Invincible theory, thanks matpat and the whole theory team ❤️

This really feels like a more classic film theory. I love it!
As some one who isn't a loyal film theorist what's changed lol (to clarify I've watched his older stuff "back in the day" but haven't watched anything "new" excluding this)
@@loganduphily6193 I don't know. I think that more recently, he's been theorizing more about the lore and message of the shows/films, rather than extrapolating things from the show and analyzing them in ways that were never intended by the writers
Hi MatPat. I hope you see this. I've been a fan since 2016 and I really appreciate the content you've made over the years. Thanks for making my childhood.
Wait I thought he ruined childhoods…

Insects seems sentient people can see the consciousness in bugs and use insects as examples of making most of life time we have.
And an episode actually use but Aliens. As contrast
19:36 was vibing, then that hit hard
I think just being on Earth even for a relatively short time will have a big impact on Nolan's ability to feel empathy. He went from a planet full of violence and devastation to a planet full of heroes.
He arrived and he was thought of as a a hero because he kept trying to protect his claim to the planet but people thought it was heroism.
If he's on Earth for 60 years that's equivalent to 1.6 years of his lifespan? That can still have a big impact and he can see how much humanity can achieve
I've seen someone who's argued that Omni-Man has had thousands of years of apathy, but just a measly 20 something years on Earth changed him entirely
@@PhantomGato-v- oh no I'm not arguing it changed him completely. I'm saying it had an impact on him. I'm not sure if you've seen Season 2 but when you do you'll see changes.
I think it did change him completely. He gave up everything he once stood for and turned against his home planet. I can't wait to see where the series goes next, especially how Debbie is going to react to the father-son reunion and Nolan's change of heart.
@@sebastianacevedo9444 I, on the other hand, actually do agree with the argument. I think Nolan's had a complete change of heart, from only being loyal to his home to finally loving the little ephemeral parts of life. It's a good change.

Viltrumite aging as Nolan described could mean he’s 100s of thousands of years old
gotta say i just like that this is a great excuse to show one of J.K. Simmons' single best performances.
You can just hear every single emotion in every line so clearly it's heartbreaking
6:15 RIP Steve Harwell
I haven’t seen the show, but this was one of the best theories in a long time. I’ll definitely be thinking about this one in the future. Very well done.
I dated a girl for only a year and a half. She took her life. As someone who has spent time with some for only 2% of their total life. I wouldn't have given it up for anything. I just generally feel sorry for them for having to deal with that
Oh...im sorry.
May God bless you and her family.
Might be worth looking into
It’s a good movie.
‘thanks to samsang’ i audibly gasped, you guys have come so far (and deservingly) great job :D we appreciate you!
I love how the latest episode basically asks this same question but in reverse with the much shorter life spans of the species of Mark's brother.
14:07 I ALWAYS COME BACK
One thing I noticed is that Nolan is as fast as the speedster in the first episode and the speedster experiences time incredibly slowly compared to normal humans.
That Invincible transition at 13:02 was clean!
I do not think he forgets every time he dies, he does remember his previous team but like you do not remember everything you did when you were 10, he does not remember what he did when he was 100
@@anna.owo. that’s more what I meant. It’s how he’s able to recognize Omni-man in the last few episodes of season 1.
Evil space mustache empire 17:10 💀💀💀💀💀
Wow the creators of this show really did their research bravo 👏 it’s like they knew Mat Pat would get to them eventually
@TheDrexxus
I think the bug thing is weird too, but I think I understand why the author did it.
