    I was just reading The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Howard the Duck crossover, and they refrenced this story by saying this in the bottom page text "Man, It'd be crazy if we killed off Howard in this issue" "Just have him get secretly replaced by a duplicate from a parallel universe before this crossover ends. It'll work out great, I promise."

    so Steve Gerber wrote two crossovers at the same time for Marvel and Image, cross those stories over and took Howard the Duck into the Image universe and Spider-Man took a fake, and then Steve Gerber died? this has to be the most pimp to ever happen in comics ever.

    What if the Collector got his hands on the real Howard somehow, that would put him back into the Marvel Universe, wouldn't it? The Collector does have ways to get things from alternate universes.

      problem is it wouldn't be canon considering, the original creator is dead along with the real howard. Unless Marvel can revive dead people other then in comic books, It's otherwise nearly impossible. It's like living your whole life with the wrong parents only to realize it just before you die. It's the perfect checkmate!

    • @dredwick
      @dredwick 6 років тому +5

      You are asking if a company that makes comics and movies can revive a dead character in a comic book that they created and have the rights to...? Its not nearly impossible, its completely possible. And trust me, it is nothing like living your whole life with the wrong parents only to realize it just before you die (in reality) (in the real world) (where things are actually real) (and not in a movie) (or a comic book).

    This is pure genius in every sense of the word. This is one of the best revenge stories ever told. Guy loses rights to character then years later subtly gets him back in such a genius way. This is genius, this is amazing. People like this guy doesn't come around often, but when they do its great.

    Great video. Good to see all the attention that Howard is getting at the moment. One slight correction. In Gerber's original stories Howard didn't come from Duckworld. His planet was inhabited by all kinds of "animals". Duckworld was invented by Bill Mantlo after Gerber and Marvel parted company.

      As he is talking with the Collector, I am certain that The Collector would have noticed if the Duck was a fake.
      Also, as one of the powerful characters in the world, I recon he has some means of dimension-travel if so is necessary.
      However, it isn't.
      The switch happened in a story where image and marvel shared universes.
      So, even if Howard would be currently renamed into Leonard, he is still in a universe shared by Marvel.
      That is from where the Collector got him, probably disposing of the other duck in the meantime.
      It is possible that the cameo is there to take Howard back.

    So that must have been a clone of Howard in the post-credits scene...
    Wow. My mind has been blown. This was the greatest stunt in CB history!
    It is especially amazing because Howard in the Marvel universe was after that being written by different people from the original writer, which means he probably was characterized ever so slightly differently, which supports the idea that he is a clone in the Marvel Universe.

    I take it for canon, because I think the original creator have the rights on his characters.
    That's indeed what pisses me of more, about american comics: too many writers.
    When you read a manga, it doesn't matter how much long it is (some really should close, after so many years), the writer is always the same... and in 95% of the cases, he's also the artist who draws it.
    Same for graphic novels and some european comics.
    So yes, I think they did a smart and right move and *Howard* is no longer in the *Marvel* universe.

      Mangaka use unnamed "assistants" to fill, and sometimes even do all the work of keeping a popular title in production. It's not a perfect system there, though it is different. More akin to the way syndicated comics in the States were done in the early 20th century with big names like Will Eisner and Al Capp being slapped on the work of other artists. Creator-owned properties aren't out of the question here, especially since the Image revolution, though you have to actually make an effort to support them instead of whatever Warner or Disney are pushing.

    @Javiikyuu 9 років тому +19

    I'm totally with you! I don't care what Marvel says, this heist is legit since it took place in an official crossover approved by Marvel themselves. Granted, it didn't happen in a Marvel book but still was officially canon to the overall crossover story.

  • @tippiclday805
    @tippiclday805 9 років тому +26

    ***** The duck was not secretly stolen, Marvel did know about it immediately. The Marvel editor of the book was angry because he had specially asked to work with Gerber on the project, because he was a major Gerber fan. But then when Gerber pulled this..he said it was the "biggest mistake" of his carrier.

    • @NerdSyncProductions
      @NerdSyncProductions  9 років тому +9

      Was Marvel aware of it as the comic was being written, or was the plan still a secret in that phase? I have a feeling that they wouldn't have printed the comic if there wasn't at least a little secrecy to the plan.

    • @tippiclday805
      @tippiclday805 9 років тому +7

      ***** Firstly I have to praise you for this awesome episode of your show! But your video makes in sound like an art heist where they replace the original with a copy and get way unnoticed at least for a while (the perfect heist basically). In this case however the editor at Marvel immediately fired back as soon as the issue came out and was furious. It wasn't a smooth crime..it was like saying someone robbed a 7/11 and then his face was all over the news and had wanted signs with his face; up everywhere. If Gerber had replaced Howard with a copy and no one noticed ever, or bothered to say anything or even no one noticed for just a little while then it would have been a different story. But this poped up immediately, I wouldn't call that 'secretly' stolen. Again with robbing the 7/11 or even an art museum..it's not really the crime of the century; if all the authorities know what you did.

    • @NerdSyncProductions
      @NerdSyncProductions  9 років тому +11

      I guess we just see it differently. In National Treasure, Nic Cage stole the Declaration of Independence. He was found out almost immediately and people went after him for the following few days until they caught up to him. Even though he was caught, you still have to appreciate the creativity and style that went into his heist. Even though he was caught, I'd still call it the crime of the century had it been real. I think the idea of no one finding out about it is kind of irrelevant to me.

    • @tippiclday805
      @tippiclday805 9 років тому +2

      ***** Not necessarily what I mean is if he replaced it with a copy and everything went of smoothly, and he began using the character for himself than okay..it worked! But Gerber never really used the Leonard duck again, (except maybe one cameo). I would say that 'perhaps' maybe he feared legal action from Marvel because they knew what he did. Basically I think the difference here is your calling it the Nic Cage crime of the century.....then yes...I actually Agree with you! BUT if your calling it a "secret" art heist where they got away scott free..then I wouldn't say so because 'everybody' knew immediately what he did. There was nothing secret about it. Know what I mean? It's more to do that in the video you say it was a 'secret' crime and nobody knows about. You even say 'secretly' in the title of the video. Good video though by the way..great episode of your show. I also like your ninja turtle connection to iron man episde a lot too.

    • @NerdSyncProductions
      @NerdSyncProductions  9 років тому +2

      Ah, so it's more about semantics than anything else. It's just how we define "secretly". The actual definition (sorry to be THAT guy) is "not known or seen or not meant to be known or seen by others." It's that last part about something that is not meant to be known or seen that is what I'm getting at. Gerber wasn't forthright about this plan with Marvel. He kept it a secret from them until it happened. It doesn't matter if Marvel found out immediately, the point is they were never intended to know. He wasn't going around telling everyone his plan before it happened. The whole thing was intentionally being kept from Marvel until the end. So by that definition, I really don't see anything wrong with using that word.

    I know this video was published a couple of years ago, but I just now watched it for the first time and I have two problems with it:
    1. Gereber created Destroyer Duck to fund his lawsuit against Marvel in 1982 via the creator-owned focused publisher Eclipse - ten years before Image Comics was formed.
    2. Gerber did return to Howard the Duck after the Spidey crossover, and in 2002 wrote an amazing Howard mini-series published through Marvel's then-new adult imprint MAX. I believe it was Gerber's last work on the character. Since then Marvel used the character sparingly, from a short registration story during Civil War, through a 2007 mini-series by Ty Templeton, and eventually a revamp by the great Chip Zdarsky in 2015, thanks to a renewed interest in Howard.

    This counts as one of the coolest things ever done in Comics and I feel happy for the creator of Howard the Duck seeing that he got his creation back before he passed away and kudos to Erik Larsen for helping Mr. Gerber. Now lets see if Rob Liefeld can pull off the same trick with Deadpool.

    Having interacted with Steve Gerber back in the day on AOL (back when they had some of the best message boards around), this was really Steve being Steve. Marvel likely figured to just let him think what he wanted, THEY were the deciding vote on the identity of their characters. Besides, Gerber eventually went back to Marvel to write a new Howard title (part of their more mature line of books), so who's to say how pissed off he was in the end. If he still felt in his heart that Howard was safely hidden in the Image universe, whatever gets ya through the night, Steve...

    Also Angili
    I think I spellt that right sorry if I didn't
    Who was in Spawn comics has recently become a Marvel superheroe if im not mistaken o think she is the sister of Thor and Loki
    I might be wrong and you probably know more about Comicbooks than me

    As I suggested in a reply to some inane comment below...I really suggest picking up a copy of Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, for a little more insight into this situation with Gerber and Howard, as well as many, many others.
    Marvel had some seriously shady, greedy, under the table business dealings happening for quite a long time, and Gerber got caught up in it...and yeah, it pissed him off, obviously...as it would piss off any creator with half a brain.
    As for whether it's canon or not, I don't really see things like that.
    I am not some die hard company fan.
    There are books from all companies, both huge, corporate ones and tiny independents...that I love...and I refuse to give in to the fanboy nonsense that encompasses the idea of 'canon".
    Every company is different, and even artists and writers within those companies have different approaches to stories and characters, and then you have various off-canon one shots, tv shows and movies.
    It's all so convoluted and complicated that trying to be a stickler for canon is flat out ludicrous, in my opinion.
    Regardless, I thought Gerber's little jab and secret theft of Howard, by replacing him with a clone, was pure genius, on his part...and I will always support a creator, before I will support a company.
    That's my 2 cents.

    • @NerdSyncProductions
      @NerdSyncProductions  10 років тому +2

      jack ireland I am super excited with going the route of no origin story. I think Guardians did a great job of introducing all the characters and giving you everything you need to know about them in as little time as possible through some quick dialogue and the actions they take. If they can bring that sort of writing into the next phase of Marvel films, I'll be happy.
      That being said, I also really enjoy Dr Strange's origin story. I guess only time will tell. I think it's good to have already established super-people in this world instead of giving them origins year after year. Doctor Strange in the comics is old, but he has magically enhanced longevity so he doesn't age like others. Imagine if they played off that showed the dynamic between him and Cap. Both men who have outlived most of their loved ones, but Dr. Strange had to watch as all of them slowly grew old and passed away. It would be interesting.
      That's just my two cents though. :)

    Fantastic story! Reminds me of the story of Arne Anka/Arne X, which I will now tell in the unlikely events that someone will notice it among the previous 1159 comments, and be a bit amused. “Arne Anka”, who could be called “Arnie Duck” in English, is a Swedish satirical comic character who looks very similar to Donald Duck (whose Swedish name is “Kalle Anka”). The Arne Anka comics mostly take place in a bar where Arne, an unsuccessful writer, and his friends have conversations about bachelor life and politics, lots of beer, and occasional interactions with women. Because of the way he looks, Disney accused Arne's creator Charlie Christensen of copyright infringement some time in the late 1980s, which prompted Arne to, in the story, be subjected to plastic surgery that made his beak made smaller, pointy, and no longer Donald Duck-like. He assumed the name of Arne X. But after some time, Christensen, never quite satisfied with the new look, got fed up with it and wanted to return to the original beak, so he had Arne get himself a fake Donald Duck-beak to put over his smaller beak. Now, he looked just like he used to, except that in occasional panels you could see a string around the back of his neck, holding his fake beak in place. As far as I know, Disney never challenged this, nor the character's name change back to Arne Anka. With time, as Arne became more popular and well-known, the glimpses of the string happened less often, until the character was back to his old self altogether. Arne Anka was cancelled in 1995 but resurrected in 2006 and exists to this day.

    Of course it doesn't count, it's Image, Early Image and it's stupid. Does this Leonard Duck keep appearing in Image afterwards? Does this Clone have all of Howard's memories? Do you honestly think Marvel even considers any crossovers canon? Especially with Image? Seriously, it's a stupid little petty piece of bullcrap some butthurt artist did because he was being a bratty little kid about having to leave one of his toys behind. I don't think it's clever or funny, it's just more evidence that everyone who ever worked for Image when they first started was a selfish, self-serving, whinny little jerk who needed to get over a lot of things.

    • @PhillipCummingsUSA
      @PhillipCummingsUSA 9 років тому +2

      Steve Gerber was a writer not an artist.

    • @FNGLHR
      @FNGLHR 9 років тому

      Capn Cummings So? It's a writer who got selfish with a character and acted like a dick Image is probably not even using that stupid Leonard Duck anymore, so the whole practice was just pointless and incredibly petty. You don't count crossovers as canon. Period.

    • @FNGLHR
      @FNGLHR 9 років тому

      Capn Cummings He already explained everything in the video. The guy was a petty little shit who couldn't handle the fact his character couldn't come with him when he left. So he acted like a spoiled brat and basically wrote a little fanfiction into his dumb crossover so he could pretend he won. The uploader may have respect for this, I don't. I don't give credit to petulant man children who do petty shit like this just so they act like they've won.
      This isn't canon, it's stupid and no one in their right mind should care. Early Image was crap and their shared universe went down the toilet. No one gives a shit. Howard isn't stuck in their craptacular universe, Marvel doesn't count this Crossover as canon and Gerber acted like a whinny two year old. End of story.
      Now leave me alone and stop bothering me with your annoying half-hearted attempts to defend this dead writer's immaturity and the stupid little fanfic he inserted to make himself feel better.

    • @vexistentialist
      @vexistentialist 9 років тому +6

      1 - I feel like you need to calm down and realize that writers and artists connect with their creations on a very personal level, and if you actually did some research into this fiasco, you'd see that Gerber was not just some "butthurt/petty little shit". You seem to have some personal grudge against anyone who dared defy Marvel...and Image comics, particularly. Your hostility is unwarranted and misguided.
      2 - A much more detailed back story of what went on with this situation, and many others...is covered in Marvel Comics: The Untold Story. Fact of the matter is...Marvel had some pretty shady, backstabbing business practices going on for a quite few decades, and Gerber and his Howard the Duck creation got caught up in that, along with a ton of other artists and writers...you know...the ones who created all those characters and stories you love so much.
      Admittedly, these guys signed contracts, and they knew their creations would be swallowed up by their employers, but that doesn't make it right, nor does it make them lesser people for getting upset over it.
      Until you've actually read and processed these things, maybe try to keep an open mind and be a little more objective when it comes to things you obviously know little about, as a whole.
      For what it's worth, I agree that some of the people who used Image as a springboard, to break away from Marvel were a bit on the petty side, (I'm looking at you, Rob Liefield and Todd McFarlane), but I don't think anyone can deny the impact they made, as an independent comic startup...against the two giant, corporate monsters of comics, Marvel and DC.
      And FYI, they're still around, bud....and they're not going anywhere.
      Leonard the Duck may no longer exist, but plenty of other amazing Image characters do, and sell a lot better than a ton of Marvel titles, so put that in your angry pipe and smoke it.
      That said, I suggest anyone wanting a more realistic, (and a little depressing), history of Marvel than what most of the televised documentaries have given us...go read Marvel Comics: The Untold Story.
