    Marvel's Incredible Hulk is a character with one of the most iconic color schemes: Bright green skin contrasted with purple pants. It's visually striking, but besides that, why does Hulk wear purple pants?? Does Bruce Banner simply like the color purple, or do the ripped violet shorts serve as a symbol for his constant inner struggle and how the Marvel Universe often paints Hulk as a villain instead of superhero? Hulk's pants might be more than they may seem at first!

    Hulk Vol 1 Issue 393 had a psych report by Doc Samson, with him saying why Banner had all these endless purple pants. While in college, a friend told him that, in order to always keep focus on his work, Einstein had closets and drawers full of the exact same stuff to wear. This way, he would waste neither time nor effort deciding this. Bruce ran out, found a store clearing out irregular clothes, and snatched up endless pairs of what would become his trademark pants.

    Gamma radiation turns pants purple. It's a scientific fact.

    The modern explanation is clearly that Banner, who goes through pants faster than any normal person, put in an order with Amazon for 500 pairs of kinda stretchy pants, but accidentally specified purple before checkout.
    To this day, Banner is always too exhausted to go back and change that color spec, when he re-orders another 500 pairs... because he was too busy changing his address and credit card info.

    I've seen them as a symbol for Banner himself. When the Hulk comes out, all else is torn apart. His body is changed and most of his garments are gone, but the pants are always there even if damaged. Showing that even after the physical mutations, the mind warping to another personality, and all the blinding anger, Bruce is still somewhere deep inside trying to control his inner monster.

  • @AR-mq2sd
    @AR-mq2sd 5 років тому +6

    Maybe it's to reflect his emotions. Red is rage, anger, regret whereas blue is calm, relaxed, without worry. Purple is a great middle ground and reflects the conflict in Banner's personalities without it being overemphasised.
    I'm writing this before viewing the video properly. Just thought I'd put my initial theory out there first.

Seriously they need to show Bruce Banner waking up after a transformation with a hundred pairs of purple pants in the background and then just have him sigh as he grabs one. Also I really want to see nerdsync do a video on the Hulk's intelligence and how it has changed over the years.

    • @mr.honeycomb

      So you're saying: Hulk, while enraged, figures this is a good time to stock up on extra-large discounted purple pants just to make sure the next time he transforms he's covered, and Bruce just has to go along with it once he recovers? Sort of like Bruce begrudgingly accepts and accomodates Hulk's need for large purple pants, as long as Hulk is thoughtful enough to pick some up while he's out?
      Ok, I can go along with that.

      Maybe... When he transforms, do his cells actually steam off the gamma radiation, making him normal while human and gamma-ed while transformed? If so, it would make sense to why he doesn't make everyone gamma mutant as Bruce and also why his pants change color and density... But WHO knows?

      I'm taking psychology in college and we just went through colors and colors are simply wavelengths, different wavelengths make different colors, so here's my theory, he has stretchy pants under his clothes (as stated by Stan Lee told to us by Scott in today's video (September 19th)) and the radiation he emits when he transforms changes the wavelength frequency of his pants turning them purple.

    I find it interesting that the common villain color scheme (green and purple) is what's called, in color theory, "complementary colors" while the common hero color scheme (red and blue) are called "clash colors." Perhaps illustrators, subconciously, believe their villains are the "compliment" to their heroes and the hero is called to "clash" against the villain. Probably a big stretch but I always found that little tidbit intriguing!

  • @wyattberens5723
    @wyattberens5723 8 років тому +4

    You know, I think the purple pants look really cool on Hulk, and I wouldn't change them for the look factor... but I might want to change them because really capture the essence of Hulk, because he really is trying to do good, key word "trying", so that's why the majority of his appearance is a "villan color", because that's how the majority of people see him, but there are a select few of people, not just Spider-Man or Captain America, but even bob the banker could like the Hulk so having a "hero color" would be a way of symbolizing that on the outside he's a scary monster, but at his core he really is a good guy. So that's why I think it might better capture who the Hulk is if he had a "hero color" on him, but then even if they did change it in the OCD would get the best of me and I want the shorts to be purple again :)

    I've always wondered why The Hulk's ripped up pants are so often worn. I mean, in the marvel universe, nobody else has a problem with their clothes getting torn up or destroyed when they transform. The two biggest examples are Johnny Storm and Reed Richards. Johnny Storm doesn't incinerate his clothes upon "flaming on" and Reed Richards clothes are able to stretch and bend with him without any problems or tearing. I know, they use unstable molecules, but why doesn't the Hulk use unstable molecules to make his clothes?

    • @DrPluton
      @DrPluton 7 років тому +5

      Because the Fantastic Four have never been friendly with Bruce Banner (AFAIK), and the unstable molecules are proprietary technology. He could definitely order some through his cousin She-Hulk because that's what her leotard is made out of, and she was a member of the Fantastic Four for a while.

      early comics does indeed show marvel characters talking about DC comics. The Beast has mentioned Superman comics in his early adventures with the Avengers. Also, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen exist in the Marvel universe, and while they have the same jobs, Clark and Lois are married and Perry White is their boss, Clark does not have powers nor an alien background, even though they still mostly use their cameos to make fun of his lore. They don't have Bruce Wayne though, but instead have a "Bryce Wyne" who is bascially the same character that was only seen once.

  • @SgtSupaman

    Green is only opposite purple in the additive color wheel. Because comics use ink, they would be on the subtractive color wheel, in which green is opposite red, and purple is opposite yellow. Even the wheel you use in the video doesn't work very well to say that green is opposite purple, because you had to go far into a yellow-green that is definitely not the same color as the Hulk. In fact, the trend you point out at 4:00 follows this, as the heroes are subtractive primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), and the villains are subtractive secondary colors (green, orange, and purple).

    Colours in superhero design is SO important. This is why I'm still reluctant to see Superman or Batman without their exterior trunks. Yes, it looks silly, and I think the circus strong man is not a visual motif that means anything to anyone now days, but on the other hand... it throws off the colour distribution somewhat. that's why I like what they did with Superman in the Injustice comic; he doesn't have red undies, but he does have red in his tights around the pelvis/thorax region.

The one thing that we discovered in class is that Bruce Banner should have never had secret identity back in the days, because how many people wear purple everyday (though I do). Should be easy as saying "Hey that Bruce guy on the job that always disappears midshift, ever notice he only wears purple pants? Does he not own jeans or sweats?)

    • @JL-tg1mg
      @JL-tg1mg 8 років тому +1

      It was a bit of both but mostly a decision. Lee wanted it grey cause it reminded him of Frankenstein's Monster (which appeared only in Black and White and he thought it would help the character be more recognizable and associated with). After the first issue printed they tried other colors like Scott said in the video because grey wasn't really cutting it. Green took gold and became the next pick. The rest is history.

    • @NerdSyncProductions

      The closest thing I can find is that the grey in the first issue was so inconsistent that it sometimes appeared green by mistake. But I can't find anything that says they took that mistake and said, "Y'know what, green looks good. Let's do that." The only thing I could find is from the colorist Stan Goldberg who said green was tossed around at first before they went with grey, and then when grey came back looking bad, they just decided to go with green for the next issue. I have sources in the description of his exact quote.

    Actually if you think about it there might be a really clever reason behind having 'purple' pants (rather than him being naked), once they decided to pigment him 'green' as there is no colour purple in the spectrum of, light. It is only cone cells on the retina being stimulated in a certain way that this colour is perceived by the brain. But then also gamma radiation would also be colourless as it's wavelength frequency is also outside of the visible light spectrum.

  • @louisalectube

    I always hated the purple pants. Purple and green don't actually go together, it's just something that people have been indoctrinated into thinking. The color opposites are red and green, orange and blue, and purple and yellow. Purple and green aren't even next to each other on the color wheel. Hulk's pants should be blue, white, grey or black. That's it. Edit: That color wheel in the video. Google "color wheel". You'll see plenty of wheels where purple and green are *not* opposite of each other! smh

    I think colour association is something that plays a part in what colour are evil and what colours are good. In the Middle Ages green was evil because it is the colour of decay and black was evil because it was the colour of death, darkness and the Unknown. Purple might be considered evil because quite a few poisonous plant have purple flowers, such foxglove. So some of these colour association could be due to a natural instinct. Also purple was used in comics as a substitute for black as it was easier for shading in the panels. The primary colours have been colour worn by Knights, especially red, and depiction of knights as heroes in literature and art work could have help cement which colours are perceived as good.

    Historically colours like red and blue, which were worn by knights specifically during the crusade, have been view as heroic and it is common for coat to arms to contain the primary colours. So throughout human history we have had association with different colours, which could have been established by plants and fruits of certain colours being more likely to be poisonous and colour of the completion of illness (ie sickly green). In the middle ages green was considered an evil colour due to it being the colour of decay. Also purple has been used as a stand in for black because it easier shade for comics and for animation. Again going back to the middle ages black was associated with evil because it is seen as the colour of death and darkness. So it may be due to purple being a stand for black that purple started to become a villainous colour.

    I like Hulk because he this guy who just wants to be left alone, but because he's this big green thing that can throw a tank with ease, he's looked at as a monster. One story that I liked was one where Bruce and Hulk were separated. Hulk left the world alone and Bruce was shown to be the reason Hulk did what he did. Even with Planet Hulk (which was brought up), Hulk fought the new planet for peace, and only came back to earth because [spoilers] his men blew up his home and wife and blamed it on the Illuminati. Dude wants peace but will fight anyone that wants to pick a fight with him.

    before watching this. i'm gonna write what i think it is.
    colors in comicbooks are important. the heroes usually use the primary colors - blue, red, yellow. (superman, spiderman, ironman... and so on). while villains usually use the secondary colors - purple, orange and so on. like the joker f.e.
    P.S. as far as i know green is primary color, but it was switched for yellow :) in heroes, and is mainly used for villains. (although green lantern, green arrow and so on are green)
    as hulk is not always in control, he can sometimes be seen as the villain. his pants are purple, showing us that he is not exactly a hero. suggesting us on subconscious level that he can be viewed as the villain.

    On the color wheel, where it shows as primary, secondary, etcetera, purple is on the opposite side of yellow. Green and red on are opposite sides too.
