Very informative video. Thanks for posting it. I am amazed that you were able to make the 360 kinect (v1) work with the Windows SDK 2.0 which was more compatible with and perhaps even made for the xbox one's kinect. I couldn't, so I had to use Windows SDK 1.8 made for the 360 kinect. Brekel Body even provides it as an option for install. All the other info was spot on. Thanks, again.
as someone who has worked with lighting setups here is a tip for you brother never let your shadow cast in background unless you are making scary movies. it's distraction for informative content but huge advantagous for creepy, scary shoots. i hope you don't take my advice as bragging i just feel like you are sort of rising youtuber and this might help you. also if you find difusers expensive then you can try those cheap LEDs and add butter paper in front of it. to this day we use that method in case we have some unsettling spots and we need to light those places we carry LEDs and butter paper or white sheet just in case we need.
I've owned my kinect for about 5 years and just recently purchased Skanect. It's been a great asset so for scanning objects and environments. I've been on the fence for years about Brekel Kinect but their multi cam setup looks solid. Three sensors would be great but at least two allows seamless front to back tracking. I also bought the nyko zoom but barely use it because the result are mediocre. Yeah it helps a bit with zoom but the kinect still has a finite depth distance. Also, after owning one for so long, I find any ghost hunting video using these becomes a comedy.
@@BigBadBeaver You make a good point so I'll just generalize that most kinect software is expecting standard FOV. Also consider dabbling with the coding for these. Majority of the concepts for brekel are in a book called "Kinect Open Source Programming Secrets". Beyond using the mine for 3d scanning, that's the direction I'm going.

It was funny because as soon as you mentioned "the connect" I was saying "good god" but then the "oh brother" line came in and I was like- well with that realization out of the way- lets go.
I'd be really interested in if the Xbox One Kinect would be better since it does have a better camera in it. Perhaps a friend has one you can borrow? They came with the original Xbox One, I'm pretty sure even I have one laying around somewhere.
From what I read, the Xbox One Kinect, even though on paper it sounds like it would perform better, doesn't really have any major improvements on Windows due to the SDK still utilizing code meant for the 360 Kinect. Would be an interesting test though...
@@BigBadBeaver I've got a two-Kinect setup, I was initially using different software that no longer exists so I am considering swapping to Brekel Body. You mentioned the Kinect you had suffering from pretty limited resolution, field of view and framerate. The V2 improves on all of these aspects, I believe its either 720 or 1080p resolution in 16:9 aspect ratio and its framerate to my knowledge is 60fps. Not huge improvements but given the hardware you were working with here, its an improvement... and I found mine for £40 each if you include the cables needed to connect it to PC. Compared to other Motion Capture solutions, its well worth the price given the improvement it has over the original Kinect. My only issue is that it still suffers from the "hand behind back" issue, though with two connected this should be mitigated... the software I used originally was able to handle two Kinect inputs, I'm not sure if Brekel does or not.
I have 8 Kinects and Brekel v3 ... for capture of multiple figures ... and no idea how to put it together yet. I'd appreciate it if you'd give it a whirl with 4 or 5 people!
Something to note. The Xbox 360 Kinect is only 640x480 on the camera, and I think is 640x640 on the 3D scanner. However I believe the Windows 360 Kinect is higher resolution despite being identical to the 360's in every other way. The Xbox One Kinect is 1080P. So if you can, try and get the Windows Kinect or Xbox One Kinect for better results.
This video is fantastic and informative but I have a question. How does this compare to using a regular camera and then adding the joints in post? My brother has a very good ape impression and I want to take his motion and turn him into an ape. I want him to be able to interact with things like furniture and people. In your opinion or of anyone reading this, should I record with the connect in addition to my camera or just do the camera and add the joint? Or possibly a third option that I'm not thinking of? Thanks a ton!
yeah that has been my issue with many of these old paid Kinect Apps. Once you buy them it all adds up and for the total you might as well invest that money in a modern day solution. All of Brekels products combined, which could have been in a single app, are $300USD, which is $470aud in my local currency. I could buy a Quest VR headset for that. Not a good option if you're trying to do this on the cheap to save money.
Anyone that is going to try this; #1 download the SDK before ever plugging in the kinnect after the software is downloaded #2 restart DONT PLUG IT IN YET launch the sdk libary store then close out of it shutdown your computer completely #3 now plug in the connect and turn on your computer. This will make the intial setup gp smoothly, I havent done alot of movo yet but I do build alot of SLS cams for ghost hunting. Since doing it this way I have had ZERO (Knock on wood) issues with having to play with drivers.
No idea if this would even work BUT... what if you setup 3 or 4 Kinects pointing towards your front, sides and back. Link them somehow to get the maximum amount of input data 🤔
The most I've seen any software support is 2 kinects. And considering the age of the Kinect many of the apps that allow motion capture haven't been updated in a long time.

I can't get the kinect sensor work with my laptop 😢 Apparently, it is a common problem, something to do with the USB controller in many laptop/PC's bios 🤔
I thinjk maybe a lot of the issues are caused by the re targeting. I tried to retarget to a rigify setup and initially had to carefully match the joints or it just went a bit weird, but I got it working fine now. Why do you not use deep motion that's awesome website because you don't want any kind of suits or any tracking points you just need a camara/phone camera thats enough just shot a video register in deep motion upload the video and select what kind mocap you want (like face tracking, body tracking, upper body, lower body) and your video is ready.
It is! (Tho I only seen this on brekel body 3, not sure about 1) this helps the program have a more 3D view even mixing kinects and cameras (only on 3)
iphones are often used for facial capture both in professional and hobby settings. I have no idea about blender, but in Unreal Engine you can link your iphone as a face capture with Live Link Face. you'd need iphone 10 or above because they have an IR face scanning thing, android does not have this ability.
I'm trying to learn if this will work for a stream setup. Has anyone figured out how to combine 360 with VMC while also having the true game of the Xbox working? Like splitting the feed somehow of the sensor data and using it specifically for live mocap? Maybe average webcam data with the Kinect data due to the limitations of the frame rate?
Xbox one kinect or Xbox 360 kinect? Which would be better because I can get either or for $20. I'd assume the Xbox one kinect but I am on edge about it.
Xbox One Kinect has a higher resolution and higher framerate. Its also a big brick, I don't know the quality of the 360 version but I'm really not worried about breaking the Xbox One version any time soon.
When I was a kid and even into my college years, I was a huge fan of pudding cups with a little dollop of Cool Whip or spray of Reddi-Wip. It was the perfect after school snack or simple dessert to keep on hand in a college dorm fridge. Then I just stopped eating the little snack packs and didn’t purchase them again for like 15 years. However, one day a package of vanilla and chocolate swirl pudding cups caught Elle’s eye at the grocery store and ended up in our cart - with a can of Reddi-Wip of course. And now my sweet girl loves pudding just like her Mama. But when I want to indulge in a bowl of pudding? Honestly, homemade pudding is the only way to go. In a small bowl, whisk together ¼ cup of the milk with the cornstarch. Set aside. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the remaining milk, salt, and sugar. Allow the mixture to heat over medium heat until it is steaming; do not let it boil. While the milk heats, whisk the egg yolks in a separate small bowl. Once the milk is steaming, slowly stream ½ cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Slowly add the egg yolk mixture back to the pot, followed by the cornstarch mixture. Continue to cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture starts to simmer and has thickened. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter and vanilla. Pour into individual serving dishes. Top each with a layer of plastic wrap touching the top of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming and serve warm or allow to chill for several hours before serving.
Hope you guys enjoyed. If you have any advice on using Rokoko's Blender plugin, let me know here or in my Discord server :)

Bought a new Kinect camera adapter the other day just to play it again. Just started learning Blender a week ago, and today this video popped up.
I can relate to the setup issues. Getting it to connect consistently required some kind of voodoo.

Nyko zoom results are typically bad from what I understand because Brekel’s algorithm is expecting normal kinect field of view
