OG VIDEO: • Alice In Chains - Love...
ABOUT…
I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?
Also thank you for all your support. It means a lot.

Layne was one of the great singers of that era.. or any era really. So many rock and metal artists over the years were tortured souls and you could tell there was no faking anything they performed. It created a strong connection with their listeners but at the same time a lot of them left this world too soon.
True... been listening to some old stuff by Type O Negative and Peter Steele... he perfectly fitted into that category... honestly... can’t really listen to these Grunge era bands anymore... all great music to slash one’s wrist to but nahh... all those Cobain copies.. Idk not my thing.
But it was that time. And they were an essential part of it. that voice though, I‘m no expert... but it’s boring to me. I know so many better singers than that..
To be fair, I still had Peter Steele in my system when I listened to this.. he could only suck in comparison
✊
@@ZeitdiebX I've noticed that many AiC fans like Type O aswell. Layne and Pete were two sides of the same coin in my book, so different yet so similar. Love them both.
Ya Layne's voice was the sh$t! But Herion puts a stain on the Brain! Wish HE was still herre! RIP🙏
Music and art are very subjective. I actually like both Layne and Peter's voices for what they were. They seemed to fit the style of music they played.
Ma'am , with the utmost respect, when Jerry Cantrell is conducting a guitar solo we don't interrupt. :P
Ya!
Solace19k she needs thought bubbles.
Exactly.
I pmsl @ this 😂
You Sir, are one of the last true and noble gentleman....thank you for ur class n decency.
After his death, Tom Morello described Layne Stayley's singing as 'like an angry angel.'
Absolutly perfect description
I saw an interview with Layne's mother recently. She described it as "razor blades wrapped in velvet". I thought that was pretty apt, too.
@@pachangamarrana1 Absolutely flawless description.
he’s fucking right
Angels don’t make music .leave it to Tom
Morello to lie about something he probably doesn’t even believe in
I doubt Layne really realized just how good he was.
Oh, i guess he did know that..but it doesnt help if it can only partly heal ur hurting heart
Krayzi Jay I believe you are correct

Layne Staley..most haunting voice in grunge rock history.

I don't think I've ever heard a sentence that better describes AIC's music, as a whole.
Yes
I literally said the same thing out loud haha

Hahaha agreed
I was fortunate enough to see Layne perform live 3 times. His range, his pain is very real. Absolutely incredible
Youre so luckyyy. I was born in 98 so unfortunately missed out on a lot of amazing concerts😔

Yes!!!!! To me it was an even better performance.
My fave alice in chains performance
Yes, yes it is 🥰
Truth
My favorite AIC song!
You have to also recognize that this was DEEP into a tour. They had been playing every night for months at this point. For him to be able to sing these songs every night and maintain any sort of quality was an amazing accomplishment.
If I scream along at a concert for one night, my voice is fucked for a week. I don't know how these guys do it every night.
@@Centermass762 he isn’t screaming he’s singing you don’t scream when you sing ik it doesn’t make sense but you see him take huge breaths before the “screams” it’s because he’s forcing a lot of air using his diaphragm to hit those notes at such a loud volume
@@zforbes839 I didn't say he was screaming. I said "when *I* scream along at a concert..."

Witnessing you feel Layne’s presence was beautiful to see. His tortured soul brings tears to my eyes all these years later- The pinnacle of male vocals. Rest easy legend, your legacy carries on.
I would have to say the top two vocals in rock would have to be Robert Plant and Layne Staley.
My dude! Check out the Howard Jones era of Killswitch Engage! Trust me, you'll like his voice. 🤟 Edit: I recommend starting with the song, "The End Of Heartache".
If that song does not give you chills all over your body. Your soul is dead.
Eddie Bruce amen 🙏🏻
hahaaa Eddie Bruce thats very well said
This is IMO his best performance
Love hate love is good but overrated, listen to rain when I die, sunshine, or I stay away for his peak vocal performances
Cycle Path I stay away is one of his best vocals
Seeing a healthy Layne on stage delivering an epic performance is still hard to see all these years later. Such an amazing talent gone way too soon.
for sure! RIP Layne! so sad even to this day.
Link to a healthy Layne please
Yeah, contrast his health here to the unplugged mtv session and its very sad....but also seemingly appropriate
He was already addicted at this point
One of my favorites from bands from Seattle along with Soundgarden. Layne was taken too soon from us, but unfortunately the scourge that is Heroin has taken to many great musical talents before their time.
I wish my gf reacted like that when I listen to this music...
What a shame. She clearly needs educated! AIC rule

You might like Pantera (Cemetery Gates), Killswitch Engage (Holy Diver), Jinjer (Pisces), Tool (Schism), A Perfect Circle (Judith), and Emilie Autumn (Opheliac), if you like Alice in Chains.
He's not the only one that gives me chills but he's the only one that brings me to tears more often than not. Might be just one abused, broken, (ex) addict relating to another but I just can't help but feel every ounce of pain he conveys.
KURT COBAIN

You mean the in-fan-cyyyy part! Definitely!
She should react to the box set version of killing yourself, that intro note He screams is in the 7th octave.
I was lucky enough to see AIC live before Lane died. He was a powerful presence on stage.
The dude weighed 140lbs wet and sang like a 250lbs trucker. GOAT.
GOAT 🐐 love ❤️ it ..
I went to an Alice In Chains concert in I think 1993. My brothers friend that was with us knew the bass player, Mike Starr who we ran into in the back parking lot of the venue. My brother, his friend & I were bs'ing with Mike when the back doors of this old van come flying open. Out stepped Layne Staley & a huge cloud of hemp smoke. Layne was clearly very high, not just pot high and had clearly had plenty to drink. He was super cool though and said, "What's up guys?" and shook our hands. He then turned to walk to the arena. What stook out so much was how short and suuuupppper skinny he was. He always wore tight pants which I imagine would probably fit my 19 year old daughter. I honestly doubt he was 140 lbs. I would probably guess about 120! One other note, during the concert Layne announced between songs that the band had run out of pot and if anyone could share they would be grateful. Being early 90's pot of course was not legal so a roadie ran around the stage picking up around 20ish bags of pot that had been thrown on stage. He then quickly ran off the stage like a bolt of lightning and through a door marked 'Exit'. lol. I was a junior in high school then. Loved Alice In Chains & loved that concert.
@@timvertz3687 what a great story,I sadly never saw them play live,only bit I don't understand,Layne was over 6foot,skinny yes,short no..😉

The first time I heard Man in the Box, I was hooked on Alice In Chains. The first time I saw the video, for Man in the Box, I was hooked on Layne Staley! Man in the box was the first one I heard. I was driving and I heard it on the radio, had to look iz up the second I came home.
Aye! Same for me. It was akin to a religious experience.
Yeah Man in the Box grabbed you out of the radio by the throat and shook you. Everyone who heard it sat up and said WHAT WAS THAT??
Layne Staley had the most hauntingly beautiful voices of all time. RIP brother.
I think he had the greatest range of any singer ever recorded too!
Imagine what we would have got from him if he had the chance to grow old. He’s in good company at least.
Please consider Wake Up by Mad Season. Layne shines in any performance. I think you’d appreciate the guitar solo as well 🙃
Yes, "Wake Up" my favourite song!!!!
Or perhaps "River of Deceit"
Or artificial red!
Wake up is mayb my favourit song from Layne
River of Deceit 100% fantastic
I think certain people can just naturally sing and have the perfect voice without any practice or fancy words to describe what they're doing.
layne worked for years on his voice, practicing hours every day, and for a long time his voice was nothing special. it became special through work, like anything.
@jamie hovis I do agree with the practice part as practice makes perfect. That being said, I believe some can naturally do it.
@@warfossil well layne didnt have a naturally great voice. he had several vocal teachers and worked on it. theres stories of him playing records at music box and would learn how to imitate other singers. he found his voice, which everyone has.
@@jamiehovis7722 Nah bro. The vast, vast majority of people could practice all day every day for their entire life and not sound 10% as good as Layne nor have the natural inclination toward storytelling and artistry. There is such a thing as natural talent. I'm sure practice helped Layne figure out how to work with what he naturally has too, but to say he doesn't have something truly unique naturally is dumb.
"Don't think bass players get enough attention"

Almost midnight and here I am having shivers watching this. Layne was so incredible :(
The amazing thing about Layne is that he descends into dark, dark places over a period of time but that he is brave enough to reach out to the listener and take their hand and shows them ,very vividly and in much detail, how dark his world really is. My favorite rock vocalist of the 90s. The way he’d do those quiet/apathetic vocals in the verses, building a sense of dread/unease/suspense, then the violent bursts of raw emotion in the chorus... perfect story telling, and really reflected what a tortured soul he was. It took mother nature 30 years to produce another Jim Morrison. They don't come along that often.
my favorite comment ive ever read on youtube. FACTS 🤘🏼
One of the things I love about this song is how sparse the rhythm section is in the verses. The bass plays such staccato notes, while the drums has the absolute minimum of a beat structure with some short fills here and there. There's so much open space, and it helps create so much tension. The guitar is helping with creepy arpeggios. And it's just SO. SLOW. The whole time you're waiting for it to get going, and it just. won't. do. it.
Then the chorus hits and all that tension is finally released. It's great songwriting.
That's why i love AiC so much, it's so dark, scary and powerful, like Black Sabbath did in the 70's. It's simply beautiful, pure art.
Agree. It's a masterpiece and a very uniquely composed song amongst their other brilliant artwork and compared to anything else out there for that matter.
Gonna make a lot people envy me with this comment. Saw him live in Knoxville, Tennessee as a teenager. He had injured himself somehow and couldn't walk. @@anti-ethniccleansing465 Shut up, dumb bitch.
She loves him!! How can you not, this song is a classic! Layne had the greatest voice of the era... best of all of the “big 4”
Sean Baron Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder
At the time it was Eddie Layne Kurt Chris for me.
Now it is a tossup between Chris and Layne.
I think I like and feel Layne was better but Chris probably had a better voice. F$!! It pisses me off to type has and have to change it to had like I was just doing
Staley, Vedder, Weiland, Cornell..
There's only 1
Hung out with him in a moshpit back in the day, right before he went up to sing... being 10ft away from him - you could 'feel the sound of his voice' coming out of him. Pure energy... raw, powerful and primal. And for a pretty small guy - it was incredible!! Lost far too young!! Much love Layne!! Still missing moshing w/ you and thanks again for the waters!!
He's 6'1
Diego’s right Layne was 6’1
Google how tall Layne was
Definitely not “for a pretty small guy”
Unless you’re 8’
Pretty sure the OP meant that Layne was a rather skinny guy, not that he was short
@@diegogaytan9952 1 - he was a really skinny guy & 2 - you need to understand the mosh pits in LA, especially in the 90s
@@paulamccarthy9511 LMAO - Google how much he weighed! Google LA mosh pit scene in the 90s. Maybe stop arguing w/ people who were there vs your Goggle 😂👍
Thank for acknowledging what an amazing human he truly was. Ive never loved a person I've never met in person as much as Layne, his music and understanding of how I felt as an addict was what truly rescued me, just wish he could have known how amazing he really was. RIP Layne we love you and always will.
He shows his head voice in “down in a hole” chorus, “I can’t remember” he’s got a super sweet sounding high note in that one.
Fear the Voices is also a good one for the head voice in some spots
Any Alice in Chains from the Unplugged 😁 His voice is absolutely addictive
My favorite album.
Kind of ironic cause he was high during the performance, RIP layne :’)
Fucking EPIC....
I can never get it loud enough...
I still cry when he sings Nutshell. I am haunted by Layne, and that's ok with me.
@Matthew, he was not high during Unplugged
@@chigwesibanyama1148 yeah he was, and he also had little to no teeth at the time as well. Was the bands first performance back together after a good few years. And they almost bailed on MTV
Layne sounded great live.. I had the pleasure of seeing the band live.. What a show..
One of the great things about Alice In Chains, was the awesome harmonies between Layne and Jerry. I would love to see what you think about some of their other songs like “would” or “down in a hole”. Their mtv unplugged session was pretty cool as well...
I LOVE how u review all types of music HONESTLY. Listening to the truth of the vocalists instead of judging them. Down in a hole UNPLEGGED Is my favorite.
The most underrated vocalist of all times... He had a perfect voice! I love him so much and always will🤘🏻😭 thanks for reaction🙏🏻😭
RIP layne 🤘🤘
Well he's insanely famous and respected in the rock n roll world beastly talented but not underrated in my opinion
Layne is one of the greatest grunge vocalists you will ever hear. ☝️
Seems you accidentally dropped the word “grunge” into that sentence.
Grunge? No metal
As a fan of Alice In Chains there is still a sense of lost and Anger even after all these years later. Feel like He had so much left to offer.
Layne was something else. I still miss his voice. So unique. And he and Jerry Cantrell, had an amazing musical partnership.
One of the most creative thing about those riffs is how they evolve into roars then taper in to soft tones like the title "Love"= soft "Hate"=Roar "Love"=ends softly. The whole song is like that, it's great
Should eventually get to the stuff they did during the MTV unplugged. He was closer to the end and very sick but still gave a hell of a show
Edit: Layne died in 02 just like the other Seattle legends...I mean not in the same way or time, they all died at different times, just that they're all gone, except Vedder who is thankfully still with us and sounding awesome
I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
If you like this song, I suggest that you listen to the song "Would" It's my personal favorite by Alice in Chains
Brings me close to tears.
Mine too
She states the 1 element of Layne that has mad me idolize his voice, he made you feel what he felt. Always raw emotions with a angelic voice.
Dear Rebecca. Thank you with all my heart for this upload. "Our" Dear Lanye stil to this day helps people with depression, drugs and so on. All the best from Denmark.
will you be reacting to more from Layne Staley? I highly recommend his other band/side project Mad Season. the song "Wake Up" is a great display of his vocals. Check out "Rain When I die" from Alice In Chains as well.
Back to watch 4 yrs from this... 30 after the fact. Rip layne. Rip mike. ❤❤❤
Those close to layne said they could actually feel the energy emanating from layne when he sang
...we miss him still, he was a gift gone too soon...
His voice breaks my heart
Layne is the best vocalist I've ever heard in my life. And he was such a sweet person ❤ AIC BEST BAND
This song is a gothic masterpiece. Edgar Allen Poe + Bette Davis + Kurt Cobain = Layne Staley. It creeps along like Edgar's tension-filled stories. Layne croaks like Bette with a Cobain grunge twang. Nobody did it like these guys, and Layne is the GOAT in any style of singing near this one.
Do Bleed the Freak from this same show. You will be mind blown by the harmonies between Layne and Jerry Cantrell. It's amazing.
Mike Brase which show was this? I know the Bleed the Freak you are talking about, it’s phenomenal!
YES! YES! YES!
The best!
Yeah! The uncensored version 🙏
Mike Brase probably one of my favorite songs of all time
Listening to him always sends shivers down my spine! My favourite band!!
You know the man was a good singer when he makes a vocal coach smile.
I love when you analyse some of my favourite vocalists because you explain what they're doing and they themselves probably don't even know what they're doint. just naturally incredible
Pearl jam - black ( unplugged) I guarantee you that you will love it !
I agree..... Honestly, that version is far better than the studio version, ONly cause you can really see Eddies pain and feel the lyrics
YAAASSS!!!!
Agree!!! Yes!!! Eddie sang so sexy-raspy in that performance 😻😻😻
@@joshuaott7783 I prefer the studio version 😢
Incredible performance of that song
Soo glad you checked out this performance. This was Layne in his absolute prime! Few other artists could match his range and power.
RIP Layne. Some how his sadness has helped so many with theirs . Not meant for this world... So he left
Please more Alice in Chains! This is very early. They have great variety, both Layne & Jerry. I love their vocal harmonies. Songs with different styles and intensity.
