Log Cabin - Building a Family Legacy - (Log Decks)

- Log cabins, something almost everyone admires but few get to build. Like many of you, I have always wanted to build one and now I have the opportunity. I have been filming the process from the beginning when the trees were cut down, then peeled. I'll eventually go back to the beginning and start a series of the entire build. For now, the logs have some drying to do which will take a while. From there we will hew them then start construction, recreating my Grandmothers childhood home. All of these logs were cut off the land the cabin will be built on, grown in the same soil my Great Grandfather farmed, raised animals and had his family. This land, still in the family, is now ours to care for and ready for the next generation. This cabin, in honor of the past family, will be a place for the family to gather in the place where it all started.

What a beautiful thing to do..... Honouring your Ancesters. 🤗🥳💖
I wish you the absolute best during this build. So honored to be along for this journey, and I can really appreciate what you're trying to accomplish with this build. So many blessings from Jersey bud!!!!
Jersey Mike, Thanks. It won't be a fast project but with the logs properly stored high on these racks they are good to sit and dry while we get things ready to go.
@@thehomesteadcraftsman8975 I LOVE TN. Been there 11 times!!! It truly is God's country!!! Thanks for the reply & again, sending many blessing to you and your family on this and all your builds!!! Happy Memorial Day too!!!
hangin out with Dad, pretty cool
I don't believe you've ever posted a video I didn't like & learn from :)
Love the use of the chimney blocks from the 12K house
That is a great thing you are doing for you and your family ! Look forward to the build!
Looks like a lot of fun!
Hard work, but the idea of it is fun.
Please do keep showing us the log cabin building.
Looking forward to seeing this log cabin being built. That's really cool that you're modeling it after your grandparents old cabin. Really enjoy your videos thanks for sharing!
Your work ethic is astounding! Love these videos!
This would be nice to see. Especially how it could be a father and son series build.
Everything you post is interesting.
This is a great format. I think your channel would be absolutely huge if you uploaded regularly and provided a good mix of content. You have a very special gift with your tone/sound of voice, demeanor and overall presentation. Its a ridiculous amount of work but a great way to make I living.
This is a very interesting channel. Glad I found it.
Love it, continue posting all you’d like. 😁😁
I love the idea of the family gathering are placed on the family-owned land and done the traditional way. Thank you for doing these videos!
Look forward to seeing this progress!!
A delightful departure. Thank you! Get your Pa to say hi 😃
Dude, whatever you post is awesome.
You are the most versatile craftsman I’ve seen. How did you learn to do all that you do? Classes? Apprenticeships? Trial and error? Blueprints? Jumping in making mistakes? Something else? Amazing versatility!
I like you channel keep em coming thanks a lot .
I like this content as much, if not better than the other stuff you post. Great work. Can't wait to see progress on the log home!
I found it quite enjoyable. As long as you also do stuff in the video, it's always fun to see projects progressing. I don't really care for progress updates that only show what has been done.
looking forward to following the build, thanks for posting
Hey your twin brother has a great youtube channel. :)
/cheers
Indeed he does, I'm a huge fan of his.
LOVE these type videos!
Log cabin! Yeah I love log cabin builds, this will be great to follow. 👍🏻
Yeah, log cabin series💪💪
Looking forward to all the videos coming up!!!!
Like this much better than the home series (not knocking it, I loved it , i just really missed the woodworking, and simple life videos that you initially posted). First video I ever saw was your peaceful woodworking video and I was hooked, really loved the tranquility and passion. Hope to see more like your original works!! All in all I enjoyed this video as well keep up the good work!
Yeah, the houses took over a bit...as life progresses, you have to think long term, not only for yourself but mainly others. Having a family has changed things. I wasn't even married when I started my channel, basically had just started dating my wife. It's hard to make time for projects and videos like making that saw. With that said, now that I'm developing a base of passive income with the houses and youtube, etc. I'm hoping to spend some time doing some stuff I want to do. I've got some cool stuff planned and some more woodworking videos coming up.
I figured that’s what was going on. But I was addicted to your channel from the first so I knew you’d find your way back. I’ve bought some plans and such off your website and will continue to do so. I’m building a 16x26 woodshop just doing up the forms and sold a few tables similar to yours last year.
Looking forward to everything, you’re doing great.
Love to see more of this type of video. So nice to see the whole process and to hear your thoughts. Thumbs up!
These are my favorite kind of videos!!
Great to see you, have a helper. Your always seem to do things by your, wit, self. Log cabin, that's going to be interesting to see down the roads.
I like it
Yes, love it. Also like the tool showing stuff.
I love it. Just bought 10 acres behind my house with the hope of building a log cabin on it
Nice. Rebuilding history. Roots are important!
This is going to be an awesome series building project ! I guess we all are getting a lot of rain this spring! I hope we get to see you and your dad working together on this log cabin.👍
this is the best kind
It's fun to get the saw out and make some saw dust every once and a while - I was out cutting some firewood this morning. This should be a popular series for you, cabin builds are hot right now.
Yes I’d be interested in watching the progress of your family cabin build. Good luck with it.
So excited to see a log cabin being built!
Welcome back buddy! Great video! Can't wait to see it finished!
I actually love the variety! Keep them coming
Love this!! Cannot wait to see the progress!

Yes me likey! 😊
This is great! Can't wait to see your progress. Love the idea of a cabin like your g'ma grew up in. Good for you. Thanks. :)
Very cool. I have about 30 yellow pine logs drying the same way in my backyard for a timber frame project. Looking forward to watching you build an old style cabin:-)
Like it. Definitely looking forward to future posts like this.
Very cool - this will be interesting. Good on you!
Great video as allways!!want to see the progress.

Where did your Grandmothers cabin go, Were the logs that wasted ? There's a show called Barnwood Builders that specializes in rehabbing those structures, pretty cool.
There's an organic spray you can use to kill that grass. And yes, any video you do, is a great video !!
That picture was taken in the early 80s before I was a twinkle in my father's eye. He disassembled it with the intention of rebuilding it. He was about 20 or so at the time and had two much going on and things got away from him. They ended up rotting. It's something he's always felt bad about so this is a way to make up for it. In the picture you'll notice white tags, he had it all numbered.
@@thehomesteadcraftsman8975, Thanks. Understand 100% !
Okay, based on the 12k house renovation and now this... you are a serious masochist. 👌🏼😰
👍👍👍👍
Sounds like the logs have been seasoning for a couple years; how much longer will they need to season on the new platforms? I didn't catch what species they are--are you using what was used in the original cabin? Looking forward to this series! Props to you and Dad for preserving your family Legacy!
Loblolly pine. I'm sure the original cabin was mixed, most likely poplar. Whatever was close.
Run Forest Run.
You're getting wet. Lol
When it rains that hard you should think about repurposing those logs from building a cabin to building an ark.
😂
yes please?
Between this video (along with the hope of many future ones) and the videos of "The Outsider" (check him out if you haven't already), I am one very happy camper!! Thanks for the great videos!!
This is the coolest thing ever!! It's amazing how many logs you need for a small cabin. Did she pass down any furniture pieces that you're going to put into it once it's done?
The cabin was torn down in the early 80's, luckily my dad has several pieces of furniture that was in the cabinet, a cabinet, table and a large chair that my Great Grandfather made. My Grandmother also has the kitchen table they used. I will make all the other furniture that is needed.
The Homestead Craftsman Amazing! Looking forward to seeing her old furniture that he built.
you gonna put them through a sawmill or just go straight at it with the logs?... most people that timber frame don't do it with dry wood.. I always see them cutting timbers and then it ends up fine even with the shrinkage.. they get cracks but. looks like that was a good day with dad :o)
Are you sticking to one specific log species? I know in the smokey mountains hemlock and poplar where used a lot? Also wouldnt it be easier to hew when there green?
We are using loblolly pine, which was planted 32 years ago and logged out about a year and a half. We had the logger cut and stack 72 logs for our project. Poplar, pine and oak would be the common logs here. I lived in the smokey mountains for a year and got to see a lot of neat cabins.
@@thehomesteadcraftsman8975 i love that area. Cades cove is my favorite place to visit. That huge cantilever barn towards the end is amazing.
What was the spacing of the support beams compared to the lengths of the drying logs? It looked as if maybe the supporting beams were pretty far apart, such that the logs might sag in the middle. Is that not an issue? Do you turn them?
Separately, I'd think a half log would still be salvageable/ useful. No? (You seemed to be leaving it in the ground, so I guessed you thought it wasn't worth drying/ using.)
Young man, just how long have you been owning this property? It sounded from a previous video you had just bought it. But now you are telling that you had cut these logs two years ago?
Whatever. I love the project and I am now invested in it.
God bless you and your family. ✝️❤️
I think he mentioned that this had been his family's land for several generations. He was just adding the house he bought back to the homestead they already owned.
What kind of hat is that? I need one. Also, what kind of logs are you using?
The hat is just a straw hat, I think I got it at good will but it was new. Tractor supply sells them too, about $10. I wear them out pretty quick but they have good shade. The logs are loblolly pine.
The Homestead Craftsman thank you sir
Have you drawn a blueprint or will you just start notching and placing the logs? Dirt floor or boards?
We are going to do a more modern foundation, the cabin will have floor joists and floor boards, wide rough sawn lumber. It will be on a crawl space.
YOU got to get some goats😁👊
Need a tractor and bush hog.
what type of logs, pine, poplar, oak, esc.
Loblolly pine
3:25 What saw sharpener is that?
granberg.com/product/g1012xt-precision-grinder-12v/ I mainly use it for my milling chain because it needs to be as close to perfect as possible and this does great. I now use it for everything because your chain is like new when done. Cut's dead straight because everything is so consistent.
How can I get ahold of you to ask some home improvement questions on a budget
You ran the rope through some tiny engine while standing behind that vehicle... may I know about it. Is it some log pulling machine or some improvisation by you?
It's a gas powered winch made by Portable Winch. They have a few models, here's the one I got. www.portablewinch.com/us_en/winches/gas-winches/pcw5000/ I also have a mix of accessories for different situations. It is a very cool machine. I can take it anywhere, anchor it off trees, rocks, cars, stumps, etc. It does not spool the rope on a drum but instead is a capstan style winch, the rope goes on and off, so you are not limited by the drum capacity of a traditional winch. My rope is 100 meters long, so doing a single line pull, I can pull something from that far away in one go. With that much rope, I can also set up a series of snatch blocks and multiply it's pulling power. The other day I got my full sized truck with a trailer loaded down with thousands of pounds worth of oak slabs stuck and used the winch to pull the whole rig about 25 yards up hill. Ran the rope though 3 snatch blocks to do it. They have some videos on there website showing it's various uses. It's really cool to see even if you have no use for one.
Is there anything you cant do? When do you plan on completing the log cabin? 🙂
I try not to put a timeline on things, expectations are dangerous. I just work on something when I can and it eventually gets done.
what ever happened to the tiny house?
Done and done perfectly !!
Check out @myselfreliance on a log cabin build. He built his all and it is beautiful.
I've seen it, very nice channel and man.
Shawn James is a legend !!
