A-Frame Cabin: Building a Tongue & Groove Roof

- Building a structural tongue and groove roof deck!
Among other things, this video covers how we're doing the insulation in a way that leaves the framing and T&G exposed inside, by using rigid foam insulation on the outside.
AWC guide on T&G roof decks, including layup, spans and nailing schedules: www.awc.org/codes-standards/p...
The spruce T&G we're using is a 2x6 V-groove from Meadow Valley Log Siding in Wisconsin: log-siding.com/ - Навчання та стиль
This is obviously a little late, but many of those adhesive membranes and tapes use a pressure activated adhesive which requires you to use a roller at the edges to press it down and get it to stick. It could also be that it was improperly stored though. I have actually been thinking about building my own A-frame as house prices have gone up dramatically, so this really helped.
I see great value in that beautiful 2 x 6 T&G planking, it's your roof structure/decking as well as your finish interior sirface (no more interior materials or labor intensive drywall, etc) and instead of thin OSB/plywood materials, you've got a full inch plus of solid wood to attach to! Great video as always
Dood this is sweet! thanks for sharing! I've seen A-frames with the tongue and groove on the inside and wondered how they were insulated. Really cool, I hope to build something like this one day!
You seem real sincere & are well-spoken, thanks for your videos
Great explanation, can’t wait to see how you put the foam board insulation in top.
You certainly have made it so much fun, even though I would believe that it is a lot of heavy and intensive work at the same time. Well done, and very inspiring!
Back again UA-cam feeds great stuff I'm very envious
Thanks for the reference for the nailing schedule. It will come in useful during inspection for my porch roof of T&G.
I have an a frame in eastern Kentucky with a tongue and groove deck and 24” cedars shakes. It was built in 1975 and not a single leak and shakes are original-even after a couple of trees have fallen on the cabin. The pitch of the roof is what makes this roof hard to fail. Also the pitch mitigates UV exposure. The tongue and groove was lightly stained on the interior and it still looks beautiful.
Do you put insulation in ceilings? Or does it need any insulation? I don't know anything about it.
Appreciate your research on a frame roofing. I believe this will be my approach as well.
Dude, your vid save me. I'm developing my own projy, so 100% helpful. Thanks!
You can get structural 1 1/2 TandG which does add structural stability. I'm positive the inch stuff you have is still giving more stability than ply.
Just found this, would love some updates! Also would love the prints!
If I were looking at that kinda plank roof, (which is essentially your interior ceiling/wall too, I'd put a thick rubberized or modified asphalt weather membrane over it all instead of simple tar paper. This is a house in the woods that can suffer damage from trees and even if you have significant damage to the outer roofing materials, the heavier membrane can much better protect more than a thin easily ripped tar paper. It's not that expensive and worth the added protection and peace of mind. I used it on my entire roof and even if I lost all my shingles it would be water tight. Plus it adds an extra amount of insulation against heat loss.
Ice and water shield for sure
I enjoy watching your progress because I'm about to start my own cabin. Too bad about the membrane. My experience-anytime you use a fastener you provide a hole for a leak.
What are you doing for amount, type, r value of roof insulation?
Cool video bro! 👍 Best regards from Russia. Wish to build something similar. 😁 It's a great to use this kind of plank! It should be very groove!
I would like to see the next layer foam and OSB, paper and shingles. Please go in detail. Is there a air gap between TG and OSB?
hey great videos thanks so much. how are you going to fix the insulation? and what type of insulation are you using? how did you work out the spacings between the rafters? thank you
Do you have a link to the old drawings you based the building design off still? Would love to have a look. Trying my hand at an A-frame here soon in Atlantic Canada...
Would it be adquate to lay down a tin roof on top of the current moisture barrier?
Are you gonna put skylight? A frame are sometime dark, can you give us some info about light, window, the way natural light enter the building?
@@jonathanlund8070 Better yet add fiber-optic natural lighting. No need for big skylights that make it hard to keep the place cool in the summer. I have them and it's like a greenhouse. Fiber-optic lighting allows you to run small FO wires from collectors outside and magnify it again once it's inside to where ever you want sun light to be. dornob.com/windowless-daylight-fiber-optics-project-sun-sky-inside/
Any reason you didn't insulate the portion of the roof that is sticking out from the front wall?
Do you know what the square footage of the roof is and how much it costed to do the roof? Also what is the size of the cabin? I'm thinking of building an a frame cabin and I think the tongue and groove method looks amazing but I just want to know how expensive it is.
@@OzarkMountainCabin Thanks!
is it ONE real inch or a 2x4 , wich mean a nominal 1/2 by 3 1/2?. Or is it only 3/4 (nominal one inch?)?
I know that Code allows for a one inch (nominal, so 3/4) plank, for a flat roof, 2 feet on center. You are 4 feet, but i guess that your member are stronger and that because of the angle, the roof is stronger and snow cannot accumulate...
He keeps saying "one inch" but it's clearly larger than that. And his description says "we're using a 2x6 V-groove" so it's actually 1.5" thick by 5.5" wide. And, yes, the slope makes 4' spans within code for 2x6 T&G decking.
Sorry if its been asked before but what are the dimensions for this A-frame? Thanks for the videos, there is a painfully small amount of info out there for building one of these.
@@OzarkMountainCabin thanks! im building a 20x20 myself. I saw your video about trouble with a foundation contractor and I've had the exaxt same problem! fingers frossed but after many delays he is finally supossed to start on the 7th.
Can you point me to where I can buy the plans to your cabin?
He linked this in another comment: www.ag.ndsu.edu/aben-plans/5965.pdf
Where did you find these plans? I would love to see them.
NDSU, here: www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension-aben/buildingplans
We changed them to add the glass wall, "great room" living room and the treated wood foundation, but it worked great to use those plans as a base, make changes we wanted and have a local engineering firm sign off on them.
Carrying plywood sheets from my boat to my cabin site requires two people.... carrying 8 inch wide T&G or shiplap requires only me.....
Were my property somewhere I could drive my pickup right up to the build site plywood is the way to go.... still haven’t decided if I will be using ply or T&G to finish the first cabin...

Hey man it’s me again! Wondering, what all did you have to do in terms of paperwork/permits before you could actually get going on this project? I’ve taken a look at some of the plans you used and came up with, wondering what all you ended up needing before you could start getting to work. Appreciate it!
Ozark Mountain Cabin wow I didn’t know that existed! I’m scared of doing all that cause I hate paperwork and assume the gov. is just gonna ruin everything for fun haha. Would you be willing to share your materials list that you came up with? I checked out your drawing and plans and stuff and that was super helpful, I think I might just copy your work if that’s ok! Might even stop by to see it in person if that was cool cause I’m just over in Illinois. My email is Jordancdillard1@gmail.com if you had anything you’d be willing to send my way or any pointers! Thanks man!
Ozark Mountain Cabin hey man! Not sure if you saw my reply but wondering your thoughts! Thanks 🙏🏼
Ozark Mountain Cabin no problem I know you don’t just sit around on UA-cam all day 😂 that all sounds great thanks! Thanks man 👍🏼
What size are the rafters, 2x6 or 2x8?
2x8, they are specified in the NDSU A-frame plans here: www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension-aben/buildingplans
What will the overall price be?
Thank you very much.
@@OzarkMountainCabin Damn that's really good value!
