Halo 3's warthog had another problem. Seeing as Bungie made it to where a vehicle will not explode if the player is still driving it. Bungie had to balance it by having you take damage as the vehicle get's shot at. In Halo 2, your warthog would shield you from most attacks, but not in Halo 3. The fact that you called the Golden Hog "orange" tells me everything I need to know. It is fun to see people so pressed about improvements to their toys though.
The most iconic vehicle in all of Halo. Had literally 2 runs with it, the runs were named after it, has the most variants, the first vehicle you drive, and is one of the few things the player can use that remained in all games since CE. The Warthog, long may it serve us Spartans, as transport, in battle, and for entertainment. Long may it honk that glorious horn. To the Warthog, the true Halo vehicle.
The Warthog has truly fallen from grace. It was godly in the right hands in Halo 3, but the introduction of anti-armor capabilities to the Sniper Rifle and changes to the vehicles balance in _Halo: Reach_ have rendered the Warthog all but useless in multiplayer... unless you're using the Gauss Hog. The vehicle has become too fragile, too bouncy, and there are too many ways to counter vehicles in general in all of the _Halo_ games that have come since _Halo: Reach;_ whether it's the plethora of anti-vehicle weapons like the Sniper Rifle, Spartan Laser, and Plasma Launcher in _Halo: Reach,_ loadouts and ordnance in _Halo 4,_ requisitions in _Halo 5: Guardians,_ or the mixture of Dynamo Grenades, Shock Rifles, Disruptors, the Sniper Rifle, and the Hydra in _Halo: Infinite,_ the odds just haven't been in the Warthog's favor since _Halo 3._
Just a little correction, the CE warthogs Insta-splatter is not due to the physics, the reason the warthog splatters anything instantly is because in the warthogs vehicle tag, splatters are setup to do an overall damage of 10,000 to all characters regardless of speed and angle, we still arnt quite sure why bungie chose for the Hog to do so much damage. - Great vid EBR
They didn't have a proper physics engine so they decided it was better to have slow impacts finish an enemy rather than fast ones not manage it. Same reason why nothing in the environment moves, like crates or such, and the reason there are no ragdolls. Halo 2 onward include Havok physics engine which allows for actual physics
The CE hog still has the best turret, this includes the awesome muzzle flash and sound. (This goes with CE still having the best effects for sparks, bullet collision, grenade explosions and bullet casings raining down on the battlefield) these specific things aesthetically went downhill after CE/H2 imo.
I think Reach did good use of the hog use. You use vehicles in roughly this order: 1. Civilian car/truck 2. Warthog followed by optimal gauss hog later 3. Rocket hog 4. Revenant/ghost and rocket hog if you push it trough a certain section. 5. Sabre and Easter egg pelican/Seraph 6. Basic hog, ghost or wraith. 7. Falcon or banshee(and possible Easter pelican and phantom) 8. Scorpion and later optional mongoose or banshee. 9. Mongoose. This is more or less what I remember the vehicle order of reach going as.
The trooper hog in halo reach is fun to use when loaded with Marines. Armed with rockets. You need to stun it correctly when you get out of the gate and reverse. Don't drive forward or you'll hit the kill barrier for it.
I love your takes and agree with many although I think the halo infinite warthog deserves a bit more credit for fun it is to drive, in my opinion at least. I love the speed/quickness and bouncy ness to it. With a full worth it full of your friends trying to get the flag back and you’re just hauling and getting tossed around is one of the most fun things ever. I love your videos keep doing more!! ❤
The new model warthogs have axels with shock spring suspension. The old model was split suspension with multiple transmissions. I prefer the old ones more. (Edit:the split suspension would be better on alien terrain and uneven ground) Halo ce-3 warthog for the win. The reach hog was fast as fuck boi
something funny with halo, vehcles did had damage range for spalleting, but its at 1000 for all speeds, some mods do change it to be simular to other games so bumping at crawl speed dos no damage, and medium speed dos slight damage.
Excellent vid ! Just 3 **CRITIQUES** ... 1) You didn't point out the backwards step in suspension design between Bungie and 343. 2) I think at the end having all the variants lined up side by side would have been nice. 3) At the end have each games hog sound compared one after the other so one can hear the difference immediately. That being said your presentation here is by far the best on Utube TY for taking the considerable time to put this all together. IMO, 343's hog is a step back. The edges are too soft, rounded and the suspension looks like that of a modern truck, not the futuristic look of Bungies.
Don’t agree with the engine sound takes. The Warthog is stated to utilize a big-block Hydrogen combustion V8, which Bungie era sound design fails to reflect, despite the fact that they decided it used a hydrogen engine. Logically, it would sound like a V8 which I feel was captured well in 4 and 5. Infinite’s sounds like a V6 at best.
I like the Halo 4 Warthog. Only thing I don't like is the overheat, and the engine sound while I still like, is less enjoyable. My personal favorite Warthog is the Halo 2 version.
My list goes like this: - Favorite-looking Warthog: Reach has the best definitive design of the Hog i believe. - Favorite Driving gameplay: I have 0 complains about Halo 3 Warthog gameplay and i am having maximum fun whenever i drive a warthog in that game. - Favorite scout hog: the Rally Hog from Halo 5. That paint job is awesome. - Favorite Chaingun Hog: ONI SF Chaingun Warthog from 5. Black&Red and explosive rounds?! Totally hardcore! - Favorite Gauss Hog: Halo Reach with the big thunder-shooting gun!! - Favorite Rocket Hog: Halo Infinites' 1rocketatatime Hog is better rate-of-fire for me.
Nope, the CE warthog cannot be destroyed even if the player gets killed in it don't know where you got that from. CE also kicked up debris from the tyres. The Halo Reach Gauss display is actually LESS detailes than Halo 3 not more. In Halo 3 it will display a real-time IR screen just like the sniper rifle. Halo Reach warthog interior will flash red when damaged. Also a huge detail about the CE turret rounds, unlike the human near hitscan weapons it is more realistic with not every round being a tracer, realistic bullet velocity, bullet richocet and it will even penetrate some objects. Yes, you can kill enemies shooting through trees with it. How do you miss so many things?
I'm a little disappointed you don't mention the Halo 2 and 3 warthogs are player health dependent whereas all after are vehicle health dependent. In theory the Halo 2 and 3 can absorb an infinite amount of small arms damage provided the driver is allowed to charge their shields
I've said this before somewhere else but in halo reach you can save the trooper hog and marines by using the target locator on the rock to the right of where it drives through
Fun fact Halo reach and it's transport warthog is completely reachable use a target locater where it won't destroy it so that the beam of the raths don't hit it and destroy them
the razorback is definitely loved for me because the troop warthog can live on but better. i loved the troop hog id use it every chance I got. the only problem i had was how much marines you could fit ln it in the back there's like five seats but the marines would just spread there lags out so there would be less room. and now the razorback feels like a fix (even tho just add one more set in the back.
The vehicle destruction of Halo Infinite's hog is just pathetic. There isn't even a texture change indicating that it has blown up, the fire effects look horrendous and the 'explosion' itself looks more like a glitch than anything. 343 had this obsession of telling the player whether their hog is going to explode (from warning sounds in H4 to color changes in Infinite), but the actual explosion itself is really lackluster (like so many other things). It really does feel and look like a plastic toy. Infinite isn't a very polished game when it comes to small details like this, which is sad. How does a 15 year old game look better than what we have now?
Me and my brothers refer to Halo 4's warthog as the Jesus hog. Mostly due to the sound of the engine. Infinite's is okay, and I still love the lawnmower noise in the Bungie games, but man would I be psyched to get 4's sound bag.
A little unrelated, but the first time I completed Halo: Reach, a checkpoint was saved when Emile was driving a Mongoose I was riding the back of, right before a jump, and locked me in an infinite loop of Emile driving me off a cliff. I had to restart the entire mission so that I could make sure that I always take control of whatever vehicle we drive. The A.I. driving honestly so horrendous!
The halo 4 era fail to me its just the weird metal bars obv the sounds and basically the colours and machine gun. The base model its different but I you paint it as a classic bungie hog its extremely sexy. I had paint a scale model like that and then an entire 3d model I posted in art station years ago and I have to say that its a really cool design. The fail its just that. But I absolutely adore the bungie era hogs. To me they are just all diferent versions like the US marines humvee, the army marines and other similar vehicles like the humvee like the Spanish uro vamtrac. Asthetically to me has sense that the unsc has different models. For example halo wars 2 make a good use of this mixing different modifications for hogs and different eras vehicles and stuff.
i agree sound design took a hit for Halo 4s warthogs, but i disagree about the friendly AI, Halo 3 easily had the dumbest marine AI n the series followed closely by Reach,, they just wouldn't bloody shoot their targets when they had clear shots and prioritisation was terrible when choosing their targets, also Marines on The Storm with rocket launchers don't get started lol I've found Halo 4s friendly AI can over compensate at times by over shooting enemies but its also one of the most responsive AI in the series and you were purposefully positioning your warthog where they couldn't acquire another target (the marine shot the sniper tower once you inched closer and id imagine if its ranged was nerfed its because 343 didn't want players cheesing the game with a warthog gunner half the map away) Reach had the same problem with overshooting enemies and it wasn't a big deal then, as for the Spartan IV's they're a more reliable AI than any other AI except noble team (which can't die) in the Bungie games and their AI is certainly much smarter than Noble team So in regards to Halo 4s friendly AI i gotta call BS mate Bungie's friendly AI post Halo 2 was dreadful, feels like you just had a bone to pick with the game and went overboard
The Halo 2 bias is pretty clear in the series as it goes on. The Halo 2 hog drives like trash. And the destructive rig is excessive. It happens so quickly to every vehicle that you are staring at a fiery smoking heap on wheels.
I think overall its hard to beat the halo 3 hog it looks good, sounds good, has good turret sfx, drives really well and good mechanics reach's was cool but ill always prefer 3's which for me is how i feel about alot of the vehicle's in halo 3 there simply overall the best of each generation. Infinites vehicle designs are nice and have some of the old school touch but still feel kind of a backwards step i, take the scorpion for example other then the support machine gunner it can have no passangers players or bot

simply an excellent video.
one issue: you mention that the warthog in halo 4 didn't get much of a redesign, which i think is a mistake
Bungie's Warthog had a unique drivetrain and suspension system, a kind of hybrid between independent suspension and off-road displacement offered by rigid axles. which translates into their particular physiques
If you look in detail every time you jump or lean on the ground, the vertical displacement of its wheels is very large and independent from one another, which gives you those uncontrollable and funny rebounds, it is observed that the wheels move vertically below what would be the chassis
the 343 warthog uses a more conventional system practically of our present, which is independent suspension
In detail in the jumps or inclines, the wheels do not have as much displacement and the vertical displacement is across the width of the warthog, which could translate into greater stability, the work of the suspension in the Forza Horizon games can be seen very well .
sorry for the long comment but the warthog is my favorite halo vehicle and I've always been wondering how bungie's design would work in real life
I built a "scale" RC model of the warthog
Not built to any particular scale but more to fit the larger components
Electric motors servos
I even wired an old controller into the radio so I could drive it with the controller
It wasn't perfect and had it's limits speed from reduction geared motors to fit in the wheel hub housings
Limited steering due to servo size and limited mechanical advantage
But it worked well enough
I got it done and a mate invited me to a big convention I had never been to one
so I took it and wore it like a backpack as I didn't think I would be allowed to drive it in
once I got in not long after I stared driving it around I got approached by a bloke who offered me stupid stupid money for it
I accepted thinking he wouldn't have or be able to get the cash a few hours later he found me and he had the money and I never seen it again
It's sad but It was a test case for building a real one after I won a ride in the wetta one from a midnight launch event ODST I think
And we got a bit of a rundown on how it was made what it was made from and why it was live axel largely due to budget
I got to ask how it would be made if budget wasn't an issue it was planned with torsion rods for suspension and electric forklift motors used for drives and steering
That's sort of how i managed to build a the RC one with those ideas
I am really just waiting on electric cars to become disposable enough that I can start to find drive motors small enough and cheap enough that I could make it work in a real world scale
The chassis is relatively easy as the flat squared off nature of the body design allows me to use SHS as I'd need flat mounting surfaces for the body panels
I have CADed up a hydraulic set up to make the suspension adjustable I just haven't run the numbers to see if the hydraulic forces required are beyond the yield strength of the steel I'd have room to use

- general design evolution like how forerunner structures look throughout the games
- your personal top 5 favorite campaign missions
LateNIghtGaming has done most of these already
I really liked the mid air attitude control in 5. Added another skill based method of preventing it from flipping.
You did not mention warthog bumper cars on blood gulch… absolute classic split screen gameplay in halo CE
The fact that you called the Golden Hog "orange" tells me everything I need to know. It is fun to see people so pressed about improvements to their toys though.
About the H2A warthog, in the campaign they are different sounds, the engine noise being one that I find quite nice to listen to.
Tbh the only thing 343 didn’t completely fuck up was the warthog (in design)
I think we've all accidentally ran over our co-op friend, or accidentally ran over a marine causing us to reload a checkpoint because we feel bad.
Every time I see Halo CE Remastered, it just looks worse
“barely bump into a marine ally” as he proceeds to hunt down and slaughter the marine that desperately tries to dive, for his life, out of the way
343: How should we change the Warthog?
Also 343: Nothing cooler than handicap grab handles 😅
“Nothing can stop your attacks even on legendary”
Not if the sniper jackal has anything to say about it
Also it was their second try at ai driving. They tried doing it on CE but couldnt get it right
The CE hog still has the best turret, this includes the awesome muzzle flash and sound. (This goes with CE still having the best effects for sparks, bullet collision, grenade explosions and bullet casings raining down on the battlefield) these specific things aesthetically went downhill after CE/H2 imo.
Thanks to the Warthog, we have Halo as an FPS and not an RTS (in the first builds of halo called monkey nuts/Blam)
I don’t know that thing looks more like a large cat rather than a warthog, more like a puma
I think Reach did good use of the hog use.
You use vehicles in roughly this order:
1. Civilian car/truck
2. Warthog followed by optimal gauss hog later
3. Rocket hog
4. Revenant/ghost and rocket hog if you push it trough a certain section.
5. Sabre and Easter egg pelican/Seraph
6. Basic hog, ghost or wraith.
7. Falcon or banshee(and possible Easter pelican and phantom)
I'm a bit disappointed, cuz no small mention of the ODST or the halo wars worthogs , and maybe a couple other games as well,
I hate the bounciness its like the tires are filled with helium, yeah its funny but it gets annoying quick
@@bdog_6224 I'm pretty sure the odst warthog is the exact same as the halo 3 warthog
The new model warthogs have axels with shock spring suspension.
The old model was split suspension with multiple transmissions.
I prefer the old ones more.
(Edit:the split suspension would be better on alien terrain and uneven ground)
Halo ce-3 warthog for the win.
The reach hog was fast as fuck boi
am I the only one that saves the reach troop transport every time with a grenade? having 2 sniper marines and 2 rocket marines by the end of the level
I think it would be cool if you did an evolution of the arbiter even though he's only in a few games
something funny with halo, vehcles did had damage range for spalleting, but its at 1000 for all speeds, some mods do change it to be simular to other games so bumping at crawl speed dos no damage, and medium speed dos slight damage.
EBR, you are the absolute BEST at covering Halo. Please continue and keep Halo alive
Halo is a pretty cool guy he kills alien and doesnt afraid of anything
Excellent vid ! Just 3 **CRITIQUES** ... 1) You didn't point out the backwards step in suspension design between Bungie and 343. 2) I think at the end having all the variants lined up side by side would have been nice. 3) At the end have each games hog sound compared one after the other so one can hear the difference immediately. That being said your presentation here is by far the best on Utube TY for taking the considerable time to put this all together. IMO, 343's hog is a step back. The edges are too soft, rounded and the suspension looks like that of a modern truck, not the futuristic look of Bungies.
Big agree, something I miss from Reach onward was that 80's sci fi shit
“-metal tusks”
Now what kind of animal has tusks
A walrus
Didn’t I just tell you to stop making up animals!
YESSS missed your videos man. Much love from Narcoleptik ❤️
You missed something with the rocket hog in Infinite. It can lock on to 2 targets and each half of the turret fires on on.
Another awesome video mate, looking forward to the next vehicles
We need the ghost evolution next
My list goes like this:
- Favorite-looking Warthog: Reach has the best definitive design of the Hog i believe.
Halo CE didn't have power slide, that was introduced in halo 2
Ive been playing Snowrunner and God the Warthog would be the best Scout ever.
I've said this before somewhere else but in halo reach you can save the trooper hog and marines by using the target locator on the rock to the right of where it drives through
I always save it too but I do a well thrown grenade
didnt even mention the fact that the chaingun's ammo cooks and explodes in h2 and h3
I’m gonna be honest, I like Infinite’s deeper sound
Warthog in CE won’t explode at all dude
The hogs in the final ce level are faster than normal ones
finally the king uploaded
am I the only one who noticed when he said "super easy, barely an inconvenience"?
This feels like a car ad lmao
Thank you for pointing out the overheating not making sense! That always annoyed me
Fun fact Halo reach and it's transport warthog is completely reachable use a target locater where it won't destroy it so that the beam of the raths don't hit it and destroy them
You can actually use the target designator to get the transport Warthog in reach if you time it right.
Yes but it's not available in any other mission or in forge
@@tommymaxey2665 343 added it to forge for MCC.
19:29 mmm yeah look at that screen tearing mm 343 is so good at art design
Also off context but there the one from Forza Horizon frnchise, a Halo 4 Warthog without chaingun turret
That marine ok? 14:07
Ah yes, the Warthog, a fine social killing machine
Since you talked about the Elites in Halo Infinite, you should do the other Covenant as well. Maybe do them in one video.
He has a series on all covenant
@@Utter_Disc I’m aware, but other than the Elites, none of them have been discussed for Infinite yet.
Nice to see you alive!
I thought the v8 sound was amazing in halo 4
the razorback is definitely loved for me because the troop warthog can live on but better. i loved the troop hog id use it every chance I got. the only problem i had was how much marines you could fit ln it in the back there's like five seats but the marines would just spread there lags out so there would be less room. and now the razorback feels like a fix (even tho just add one more set in the back.
Infinite vehicle destruction is like a lego minifigure dying. putting the Yoda death sound over the explosion would fit perfectly.
call me crazy, but I actually enjoy the 343 designs for the hog, seems more utilitarian
How does a 15 year old game look better than what we have now?
halo reach's troop transport is actually drivable. you just have to use the target locator to blast it to the left
For example halo wars 2 make a good use of this mixing different modifications for hogs and different eras vehicles and stuff.
i agree sound design took a hit for Halo 4s warthogs, but i disagree about the friendly AI, Halo 3 easily had the dumbest marine AI n the series followed closely by Reach,, they just wouldn't bloody shoot their targets when they had clear shots and prioritisation was terrible when choosing their targets, also Marines on The Storm with rocket launchers don't get started lol I've found Halo 4s friendly AI can over compensate at times by over shooting enemies but its also one of the most responsive AI in the series and you were purposefully positioning your warthog where they couldn't acquire another target (the marine shot the sniper tower once you inched closer and id imagine if its ranged was nerfed its because 343 didn't want players cheesing the game with a warthog gunner half the map away) Reach had the same problem with overshooting enemies and it wasn't a big deal then, as for the Spartan IV's they're a more reliable AI than any other AI except noble team (which can't die) in the Bungie games and their AI is certainly much smarter than Noble team
So in regards to Halo 4s friendly AI i gotta call BS mate Bungie's friendly AI post Halo 2 was dreadful, feels like you just had a bone to pick with the game and went overboard
You are really talented and i really like your videos, i also want to wish you good luck with the channel.
The Halo 2 bias is pretty clear in the series as it goes on.
The Halo 2 hog drives like trash. And the destructive rig is excessive. It happens so quickly to every vehicle that you are staring at a fiery smoking heap on wheels.
I'm in between CE and Reach warthogs.
Scorpion, Ghost, Wraith, Pelican and Banshee please
Surprised you didn't complain about the overheat on the halo 5 machine gun hogs
Normal person: wart-hog
Insane person: war-thog
