00's salt about the scaling problems with the Pillar of Autumn will never stop being funny.
I get why he gets like that. Nobody can seem to peg it's _actual_ size right.
I had an epiphany about that a few days ago. if Bungie had you double back after Foehammer gets shot down this argument wouldn't happen lol
@@logion567 what do you mean by that? Sorry I didn’t quite understand.
@@hathveon Basically, rather than keep going forward, you're forced to double back, keeping the same distance travelled, but shortening the map to a more logical scale.
All the scaling is bad in any Halo media. The only thing that physically and visually matched up was Halo CE. Even though it's kinda iffy. These people are lugging around huge weapons. The magnum looks small and not anything that's out of ordinary if you're a huge machine suited killing machine. To hold that weapon as a normal human. It's a Desert Eagle on steroids. I mean look at the MA5b. That rifle is basically an LMG in it's size. It's not really scaled down after it's redesigns for game play. These weapons are huge. Plasma pistols are bigger than anything you would think a "pistol" is. I guess it's the lore. You gotta remember this is their weaponry. These normal humans have to carry and use big as fluck major comicically huge weapons just to make a dent against the threats. There are a lot of things that could lighten those things to make big weapons easier to handle and create the punch you needed. The visual lore doesn't make this apparently appropriate nor does the written lore.
The Longsword’s mere existence suggests that Halo’s ships are actually 2.65x their stated measurements
He already did a video on this
@@bigdanbilzan what’s the video called?
@@rickyderby lore scale problem - lore and theory
2.65, I'll keep a note of that
I'll take itvas 2.7x
I really loved the design of the Longsword in *Halo: CE Anniversary.* It's pretty cool how the bottom area of the Longsword is meant for mostly carrying heavy cargo or sometimes carrying a fair amount of UNSC troops into battle.
Why would you want that on a bomber/interceptor ?
@@dynestis2875 Everything is multi role, lol.
Besides, It’s so large that why not? We have munitions designed to be dropped from C-130s. Those are either gun ships or transport. So really “Por que no los dos?” Or sum shit, lol
The longsword is a fighter/bomber/escort, not a troop transport. It’s “bottom area” is purely meant for payload, be that conventional munitions, missiles, mines or tactical nuclear weapons.
The Pelican is the dedicated troop transport, as it’s far more capable to deliver troops where they’re needed than the Longsword would be in atmosphere.
@@DS-wl5pk There’s a huge difference between the C-130 and the AC-130 despite them sharing the same airframe. The AC-130 is incapable of transporting anything due to the cargo area being taken up with its weapon systems and ammunition.
The CH-47 chinook is one of the few examples of a multi role airframe being able to do cargo/troop transport or be a dedicated gunship, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a non rotary wing capable of that.
@@DS-wl5pk how does it or everything being multi rol answer my question? Turning your bomber into a cargoplane does not make it a better bomber or cargo plane for that sake
Great, brutalist-looking ship design. OG Halo Longsword looks like a sturdy, well used ship.
One of the best designed multi purpose fighters ever and is one of my favorites in design fallowed by the ARC 170
Gods I love the ARC-170. It is just a super pretty design.
Longswords or halo ships in general are soo realistic
@@centurymemes1208 no, the expanse is realistic. Halo is a semi realistic sci fi. No disrespect tho
@@terrelldurocher3330 yeah expanse is 1 and halo is second
@@terrelldurocher3330 what about the Alien universe?
Knowing more on the nanolaminated armor of the Covenant would be nice.
The Banished use nanolaminate armor too
@@PackHunter117 The armor was invented by the Covenant to mimic Forerunner material science.
@@WolfeSaber9933 Correct.
If i remember correctly from one of his videos or another creator camt remember exactly but Its essentially a multilayered material but made in such a way that all the materials structures at a mollecular level overlap one another creating a stronger finished product. Or something like that might of got some of the specifics wrong but im pretty sure thats the concept
@@angrycanadian9760 :)
You know what I just realized. Just how God damn big thing is! 80 and something meters is huge for a fighter / bomber hybrid. Jesus, no matter why the covenant had it so easy in dogfight, this thing was the broadside of a damn barn.
Have in mind it has a Turreted Rapid Firing Gauss canon that shoots tank shells, at least the bigger one so if you chase him he can gave you Tank Shell size lead in your face.
S77 Crow is even bigger
@@soumyajyotimukherjee4752 And dumber, like the vast majority of post-Halo 4 additions 343i has made to the series.
They've got funny scaling issues. It seems so much smaller when you look at the cockpit windows and use a human for scale. If you look at a silhouette of a 747 where you see the cockpit windows, you would see just how much bigger it seems compared to a person. It's it's really that big, they need to make the cockpit windows much smaller in the illustrations to show scale. If you go by the cockpit windows, it looks like it's about the size of an A-6 Intruder.
@@cavejohnson8665 It's face profile is quite small. Though I think the requirement for it to be space and atmosphere capable is a major issue cause if it was made space only you don't really need those wings and maybe they should have done a dual one and a space only one
I wished they were featured more in games. I remember them being super bad ass in red vs blue. Thank you for the great video 00
Yo when did RvB have longswords
@@Baguette939 season 8 I think. The debut of north and south on the oil rig. They got chased by longsword in a cool action sequence
@@estarossa1847 o yea
There is that great scene in Halo Legends showcasing the destruction nukes on Longswords can cause
No matter the explanation, its impressive how the longsword even works as an effective fighter in atmosphere and out
Very impressive. Too impressive in fact.
The smaller variant C712 was his name?, is half the size and has like 8 50mm Gauss Canon, the big one has a turreted 120mm Gauss canon, they are good because they have A LOT OF dakka
Yeah, a single stage dip into atmoshphere and return to space yourself spacecraft is kinda dumb, especially in a universe where the broadsword exist and space elevators are a major thing. The same issuees extend to the pelican though...
@@scelonferdi @LennoxPoodle the Broadsword wasn't that good originally, it was created in 2530 I think?, that changed with the new variant wity Shields, Space Elevators allow you to move far more material at the same time and they can work as space station to resuply a Ship I think, the Pelican otherwise is the Ultimate Dropship, it only lacks energy Shields.
I just can’t believe how damn big this ship is.
"That's no moon..."
Well... it is a space ship. But yeah, its suprising when you realize
@@markmulder9845 so’s the Pelican and Broadsword…
@@____________838 Yep. Basically all halo vehicles are chonkers big bois. XD
@@markmulder9845 except… they’re not. That’s my point. Compared to the others, the Longsword is ‘uge! There’s even talk of there not being enough space to house a squadron of them in ships that are supposed to have a squadron.
The fact it was designed to fly is amazing. The fact it looks like a lot of planes we have today.
00 you are a charm in the Halo Community
This is some severely boss-level techno-nerdage.
You, sir, are a steely-eyed missile-man 👍
Longswords are indeed quite the underutilized craft when it comes UNSC combat in the aerospace region. From this video, it is apparent they pack quite a punch. They'd be fun to fly around in if 343/Microsoft ever wanted to make a Halo version of Wing Commander.
A Halo Ace Combat complete with UNSC, Covenant, and Banished space fighters would go pretty hard too!
Dude I was just thinking this as the video ended!! Imagine playing through these scenes in Halo 3 but you're in the LS?!
It's amazing how much The Maw kinda breaks Pillar of Autumn canon, like the warthog run being 3x longer than the ship, the ship having a random open area with a narrow bridge and the longsword somehow being docked inside the ship.
Great breakdown of the Longsword. Always loved the look of them
YESSSSS THE LONGSWORD!
Indeed the long sword
Duuuude i totally had the exact same reaction
Minor slip up at 1:35, should have been F-117 Nighthawk. Otherwise, impeccable research as always!
Pretty sure the ‘f’ designation was to get around budget restrictions when it was developed. So he’s wrong but not far off.
I noticed a slip about the cube of two being six instead of eight during the scaling bit. Lots of numbers make it easy to make clerical errors but that exact quality is why I love his videos, so technical.
B-117 (or A-117) is far more accurate for what the Nighthawk actually was. The F-117 designation was the result of military political shenanigans, its most definitely not a fighter.
@@Nyx_2142 Yea well, its not called the B-117 now is it?
Also he said "2³" is 6. Still understandable tho.
Super minor thing but when you mentioned the inverse square law for the increased size/mass of the craft; you said 2 cubed was 6, whereas it should be 8.
I caught this too. Though I wouldn't call this a 'super minor' thing. Saying "two cubed" means 2^3, which means 2*2*2 = 8, it doesn't mean 2*3 = 6. That's a fundamental math-comprehension thing.
The Longsword reminds me of the Peraguine Fighter from Star Trek DS9. Fast, relatively powerful but not as long lasting as larger ships.
these are more akin to maqui fighters or runabouts than peraguines
For an IRL version of the Rotary Launch System on the scale of a Longsword, look up the B-2 Spirit's Rotary Magazines. It is essentially Identical to what is descibed here.
One of the most coolest fighter/bomber in Halo!
She's a big girl! That's for sure, but honestly it feels like it is about the right size for a human starfighter with relatively conventional technology that has trans atmospheric capabilities.
Agree. I wish 343 release these as model kits actually. I mean yeah, we can 3D print them, but I like it as I can build one & paint it.
One of the coolest fighters in science fiction honestly
I think a story or series needs to focus on space combat with stuff like the longsword being at the forefront to help out with a lot of this and flesh out the UNSC fleet and space forces. I wish I knew about Halo Fleet Battles when it first came out
I'd like a video that explains the reason why the weapons shrink in normal marines hands yet scale to super enhanced levels when you pick them up. These weapons aren't small. They are massively over-indulged for a reason. It makes sense. You gotta fight a force that has a near magic barrier to deflect incoming fire you're gonna create a more extensive and important weapons system that can bypass. The issue is this wasn't the reason. These weapons systems were there before the Covenant War. Was ballistic armor that good that you would need such personal weapon systems to bypass insurgent logistics? It's especially funny when you read or look at Covenant personal weapons. They shrink by 60% in Human hands just to match up with what the Spartans use. It's really just my major gripes with Halo. CE made the weapons look bulky and cumbersome. The other games made them look normal for Marines and ODSTs yet the size for a near 7 foot Armor clad Super Soldier. To shit me up just look at the "Lore accurate" showcase they displayed that shows you the size of things. I'm very privy about the supposed rounds and how these human weapons are functioning. The Covenant weapons are massively mis-represented. Size and lethality. A good break down on Personal weapon systems would be Dope. Any way rant done. Love the content. And Nothing I said really matters.
This is one of the most well-spoken Halo youtubers and I'm all about this nerdy content, I love it.
Way back when, me and my best pal would explore Halopedia to learn all the insignificant details about the ships. Other than the Marathon class, this was my favorite ship in the series.
the amount of detail is outstanding, you certainly know your halo, loved all the drawings as well, the comparison with the planes just adds to the whole video, superb
"And that should include the Pillar Of Autum-!!!" That always kills me every single time
The Longsword is my favorite fictional vehicle. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.
a fusion scramjet wouldn't need to slow down the intake air, as it doesn't need to make anything combust. it just superheats the air and the heat expansion causes it to shoot out the back.
Wonderful breakdown, as always. Your knowledge and effort to research these ships is incredible.
Your most detailed breakdowns are so helpful for me. I’m a bit of a writer (still waiting to hear back about Yellow Team) and engineer, and being able to use your thoughts and research to help inspire my own designs is beyond helpful.
@ 6:26 Ummm, 2^3=8, not 6. Not sure if the rest of your math is based off of that, but that would be a fairly substantial difference if it is.
I appreciate all the extra work you do to enlighten the Halo fans.
21:00 “hello, anger-management-classes R us? Yeah, I’d like to sign someone up for your services...”
What a lot of people forget. In helo 1, longswords were with the pillar of autumn. You see them in the cut scenes an her about them fighting too.
There was a lot of research done for this project. Respect.
Always enjoy seeing your videos, kind of crazy that you can find so much information in the lore from what started as a FPS. I wonder if this was a trial run to do more abstract ships and equipment? Hopefully you're able to do a prowler breakdown someday
Excellent timing - I was looking up the Longsword this morning and several hours later you posted this video. Great work - I love how much effort you put into these detailed breakdowns.
I love the design of the Longsword, with the Hale CE version being my favourite variant. But I would classify the Longsword more as a strike or attack craft, or even as a bomber. I think the sheer size of the Longsword would make it impractical as a fighter.
I assume the Longsword could carry more than a Pelican - it’s way bigger than a Pelican- which could make the Longsword an awesome trans atmospheric shuttle or cargo craft too.
Considering how the Longsword is used both as a figher and attack aircraft, I'd think it would mostly handle interception missions considering how its size would make it turn like a moose in molasses
It's nice that you did such a extensive research you must be smart a man who absorbs so much info cause of all the research you have done for halo and different topics glad I've been sub for I think 2 to 3 years can not member the exact time but ur a really good yt tuber so keep it up and even then ur still a really smart man.
I can’t believe I never noticed that Sergeant Johnson snuck a handful of elite cake right before miraculously escaping the original halo ring
Love it! I've always really liked the longsword and I appreciate your video about it
Ah yes, an upload on my birthday. What more could I ask for? Thanks Install, made my day!
Happy Birthday. Many Happy returns.
@@Installation00 Thank you so much!
The C718's background music perfectly fits the cursed F-117 vibes it gives out
I’d love a detailed breakdown of the sparrow hawk! Great video!
Hey I hate to be that guy, but I think you got your maths mixed up at about 6:30
2 cubed should be 8, not 6. lol I'm sensitive to this mistake, as someone who makes it constantly myself xD
Anyhow, I absolutely love this series, how much thought you put into it and the depth of research. I was super impressed especially during your Titanium-A section during the breakdown of UNSC Infinity. Keep up the good work!
Another awesome breakdown. keep up the good work 00.
20:56 has that just become a running gag for your channel?
Hey 00, maybe the reason the longsword was in the hanger on the autumn was because it was a maintenance hanger, it may not be stored there but it does make some sense that maintenance is easier in a pressurized, warm environment than in space. My theory anyway.
That little tangent was a reference to 00's video on Halo's scaling issues. If the Pillar of Autumn is actually the Canon size of around 1100 meters, then the Longsword shouldn't even be able to fit into the ship's hangar openings.
NSA is absolutely monitoring your internet searches lol
You gotta love how what the UNSC considers a fighter would be considered a dropship or light freighter in other sci-fi universes.
I'm pretty sure this thing is roughly the size of the Millenium Falcon, just with *a lot* more bite.
The largest version is somewhere around 64 m in length, or about double the falcon
@@glenndewolf9659 Which just makes it more of a freaking beast.
@@glenndewolf9659 a good 15m of that length though is just that aesthetic manta-ray tail.
Wonderfull breakdown. Like to see more breakdowns of moore unsc fighters or covenant. Keep up the good work.
I sprayed coffee on my steering wheel when you mentioned scaling the Pillar of Autumn 😂
I wish we got to fly these
I love the long sword, and the sabre interceptor craft from halo. Both are practical, able to effectively be used in space and atmosphere
That 110mm rotary cannon is reaching levels of “it’s so stupidly illogical it’s funny” we’ve never seen before. Like the only other place I’d find stuff like that is halo fanon.
Awesome! I hope you'll do the Brute Choppers and maybe the Prowler at some point.
Ooh. Does this mean you'll do the Shortsword, Broadsword and Sabre?
i’m glad to see more vehicle vids
Love the longsword. One of the my favourite space fighters. The coilgun would be effective up against shields of the seraph
@Installation00, later use of Shivas got me thinking about the 'laserhead' type missiles used prominently in the Honor verse books by David Weber
Everything about this type of content is just 👌
Love this Starfighter! Wish we had a chance in a Halo mission to fly one of them
There was a heavily modded version of halo CE (pc) back in around 2008-2015 known as halo : custom edition that actually had a flyable longsword on the map known as extinction
Ive been waiting a long time for this video
I'm shocked youn made no reference to the ludicrously crazy 110mm rotary cannon, The dimensions were so nutty it was called crazy/stupid by the lead weapon developer.
But I imagine it could do some major damage to capital ships since it's as large as a modern tank gun and larger than some modern ship autocannons safe for maybe a 5" naval autocannon.
ETA it would be hard to store more than a half dozen rounds and I imagine it would have to produce rounds on the fly with nanotechnology.
If the longsword used it's air intakes to compress the air, pass it through the fusion reactor, to heat it before exhausting it you could get specific impulses of over 100,000. In space it could use the metallic gas from the fusion, or just gaseous or liquid hydrogen or light hydrocarbon fuel heated to millions of degrees by the fusion reactor.
I’d like to see long swords just clamped or magnetized on the outside of small frigates. Since it’s kinda big for hangers and it also makes sense.
15:17 That reminds me of the ships from Aliens, where they use water as reaction mass. The USS Sulaco even uses industiral carbon diamonds.
If I'm not mistaken by mashing together the dimension number of C712 and C718 Longsword considering they're roughly the same size the C712 is half the length and width but roughly the same height with C709, so by rough napkin math the volume of 1 C709 equal the volume of 4 C712, which means in upper limit they're only 4 times as heavy as C712 Longsword (around 720 Metric Ton).
For the record, B-2 Spirit have max take-off weight of 170.6 metric ton.
This is my kind of geek content, love your work :P
Just a heads up though, a teeny math error at 6:28 - the cube of 2 is 8, not 6!
I love the Longsword so thank you for this!!!!!!!!
Been reading the Encyclopedia, I'm highly curious about the Owl, hopefully they give more info about it in future or we even get to see it in whatever the next Halo Wars game is
Indeed. The "Owl" was a successor to the pelican. It was a stealth dropship. Would be cool to see in a Halo game
I feel like you just took me to engineering school.
With shielding being on the Broadsword. Shouldn't the Longsword also be shielded post war. It would make common sense for the UNSC to retrofit the same shield generator that the Broadsword has onto the Longsword .
Also the base Titanium used to make Titanium-A in lore is Titanium-50.
I've been watching your content since 2019, and i absolutely love it. However, if i may point out one very small discrepancy.
The missile Shiva is named after the Hindu God of Destruction, it's pronounce as how Americans would pronounce "Shiv".
Lots of love from India.
THIS WHAT WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR, WOOOOOO
My 2nd fave space fighter (below the type 99 cosmo falcon) yessir this gon be lit
Yay, finally a 00 video I want to watch.
Would be great to see a strategy game where you had to watch the heat on ships
I have no idea why I forgot about your channel, and why youtube apparently also forgot you. Comment for the algorithm, and let’s hype Installation 00!
Wonderful video! I want you to know I keep several of your videos saved as references for my own writing (making a little unoriginal Scify universe and I’m writing a lore codex for it)
Great video, but it was the F-117 "Nighthawk". Not entirely sure why it was called a fighter because yeah...it wasn't, but that was the designation. Don't ask me why I wasn't even born when that decision was made. That's all I got, keep doing your thing buddy. Love your work
My favourite of all 😍
"...AND THAT SHOULD INCLUDE THE PILLAR OF AUTUMN!!!! *cut*" 😂🤣
Hi 00! The big longsword is even heavier than suggested... 2 cubed is 8. (2 x 2 x 2). It's a hefty bird!
The videos I came for. Good job
So with the C712 being half the size of the C709, does it make it suitably sized for the Autumn to carry 5, as opposed to the original? Also in lore it does state that the Paris class heavy Frigate can carry at least two, perhaps, on external docking clamps. How much does this fix the original scale issue?
@INstallation00 You know, I get calling the Nighthawk a bomber as it was essentially a strike bomber. But it was designated as the F117 not the B117 and fulfilled a similar roll as the F15 E Strike Fighter minus the ability to carry Air to Air missiles.
I remember playing Halo Ce on the computers in high school and we were on one of the custom maps that had a longsword. Teammate jumps in the pilot seat so I jump in the gunner seat and start testing the weapons. Left click, guns, ok. Right click, what's the whistling sound? I had dropped the nuke in the hangar. We hadn't even taken off yet.
Wasn't the most popular for that one.
You should do videos on the Shortsword and Broadsword
I assume there wasn't any information at all on the Kinjal variant of the chassis, being the missile/bomber version. Admittedly the only time I've seen it is as a fighter class unit in the Halo Homefront mod for Homeworld 1.
sadly the Saber wasn't deploy to service not even produce , just a handful prototypes on Reach
sorry but 2 cubed is 8, not 6?
I want to point at that 2 to the cube is not 6, but 8. 2x2x2 = 4x2 = 8. The scaling of volume and mass between the two Longsword variants is thus misguided. This do not change the spirit of the analysis though, so this is not that important. Great video nonetheless, as always!
Ayo i love you. And your content
00 is on watch list now
this is brilliant.
The flying nuclear apocalypse

Just my 2 cents, 2 cubed is 8 not 6. Nonetheless formidable video.
