  • DeMarcus Cousins is getting set to return from his torn achilles tendon suffered last season. In anticipation of his return to the Warriors starting lineup, I'll review his injury and explain why he's in a unique situation for his injury. Plus, what is a key thing to watch for in how he'll perform following this injury!

I am 23 years old and I tore my left Achilles when I was 16 years old and tore my right Achilles 19 years old. Both playing basketball. Doctor told me I have a higher change of tearing the other when I had the injury due to favoring the non injured foot prior to the second injury. This injury is more than physical pain. It was emotional draining since you have to take slow step to get into a full recovery. God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers. Boogie and myself had similar stat line for our first game back from Achilles Injury. That’s why his story hits hard to my heart.

That's a good point about DeMarcus' age. The rehab he has access to in combination with how relatively young he still is, it was a good move by the Warriors to sign him since it's virtually a no-risk contract. It was also a good move for Cousins as well because he can still prove he's worth a max deal contract that he's seeking.

Thank you for your videos, and this one in particular. I also ruptured mine at the age of 23 playing college football. It completely transformed my life and my body. I went from a thin fast guy to a slow heavy guy. It took about 5 years before it felt “ok” again. The surgery caused me to have never hypersensitivity down the outside of my leg that still persists today 18 years later, although it has lessened significantly. The injury happened in 2001, I returned to playing football in 2008 and am still going at 40.

Dedicated every moment to rehabbing and made it back to competition at 3 months 3 weeks and 2 days. 23rd will be 5 months and I’m back running, jumping and feeling back to my old self. SO, to anyone else who ruptures - recovery can be expedited based on your dedication to rehabilitating the achilles/calf muscle. Make it happen!

I ruptured my Achilles’ tendon on April, 27, 2018 playing competitive soccer (football) and I greatly appreciate this video! I’m only 22 years old which left me totally confused when I sustained this injury as I’m physically in good shape.
It’s good to hear another person say this likely won’t affect me in a year or two. Gives me a lot of hope.

Hey mate, ruptured mine back in November 2016 also playing soccer here in Germany. Let it heal completely, do not rush anything but be sure to do your homeworks. I can confirm that you need 1-2 years to nearly get back to your old capabilities and its a long way, but you can do it. Just believe in yourself! I started feeling a lot better in summer 2018 pre-season workout, so yes...you need that time.

I have a question that I got varying answers to and would love to have some certainty on.
This is certainly one of the scarier injuries to have in mind when you play.
I severely strained other foot tendons on several occasions but never the achilles and never seem to have had a rupture according to my doc at the time.
Now some of my teammates said that for a soccer player suffering several strains is actually worse than having one rupture would have been.
Is that true? If so: Is it true for all tendons or only the ones we soccer players usually deal with (knees and ankles, rarely hips, very rarely the achilles)?

Had this injury myself and can confirm, you really need 1-2 years to fully...or at least get near your athletic capabilities you had pre-injury.

I’ve heard a long Achilles’ tendon is the most important variable for a high vertical jump. Is that necessarily true?

No matter how disadvantaged you are, getting stronger and more explosive will make you a very high jumper.

I know this may be a college team and a lot of people don't like his school, but can you talk about McKenzie Milton's leg injury, and go through on what made it a very severe injury?
