Giannis Antetokounmpo grabbed near his achilles tendon and had to helped off the court in the bucks game vs the Boston Celtics. Is it more than a soleus strain?

Hi Brian as always thanks for making this impossibly fast! I have a question. Is there often some degree of warning before an Achilles tear? Lefkoe mentioned Giannis had had "Achilles tendinitis" in early March. I'm curious why any athlete would take the floor with a condition like that, given the risks. If one does have Achilles soreness, what is a safe amount of time to rest it before returning, to minimize risk of a tear? Thanks again!!!

@@Brhoward31 My left achillies exploded whilst playing high school football, CIF championship game, playing middle linebacker, running the defense, etc. Had mild soreness for a few days prior to the game, thinking it was just sore from a hard week of practice, thought nothing of it. Was still sore on game day, so I took an Ibuprofen before warm ups, pain was 86'd, good to go. I was in Ray Lewis mode, mean. We're up 10 at half time. We come out, and the first play, I run to tackle the running back on a draw play, three steps in, I thought I was shot by somebody, my left foot hit the ground and immediately collapsed, I knew what just happened, and I was a combination of sad, heated, and confused. The swelling was horrendous, it was black and blue a day later, and to make matters worse, the imaging showed the tendon completely seperated from my foot, torn off the bone. I was a sophmore, I didn't step onto the grid iron again until my senior year.

I know the Celtics were resting some guys and were missing some guys but the Bucks played extremely well with The Big 3 and They’ve had some good plays with Middleton back, All I’m saying is The Records don’t show the entire story.

Wonder if teams are pressuring athletes not to reveal the extent of their injuries and threatening them with consequences if they do. Giannis has been out with "achillies soreness" in the past seasons. For fans who aren't educated in sports medicine they may assume its just cramps from too much exercise.
Usually when you see a sports doc they give some documents on their findings to you. Wonder if the team threatens players not to reveal their injuries or sit out. or maybe they intercept the documents before it can get to the player and asks the doctor to downplay it or lose their contract with the team. In the end the fans will blame the players for "quitting" like they did with KD until they realized it was serious. I remember fans acting like they learned their lessons about assumptions and will never judge a player for sitting out...yet fans are still accusing players of quitting to this day.

The warriors medical stuff said the same about him. that it wasn't a tendon injury and then he raptured it. I am very stressed right now about Giannis. He plays with so much force.. And he will not miss the playoffs no matter where the injury is.

Hopefully this is not too severe. Not contact injuries are scary. Even with best case scenario, soleus injuries can take a lot of time to heal. I have dealt with some of this as a runner and it not a quick heal.

People need to be educated about the soleus. It’s the most important muscles to train to avoid Achilles injuries. People need to also understand that a soleus injury can feel like a snap just like with the Achilles. It happened to me playing soccer when planting to kick a ball. Scared the living crap out me thinking it was an Achilles rupture because of the “snap” feel and immediate pain. Aaron Rodgers mentioned after his Achilles injury that he has his soleus popped a few times in his career.

Everytime he landed he was falling on his rear, this showed me in the first minutes there was no stability in the legs, something was off from his landings most of the game until this, go rewatch it and tell me its normal to not land properly so many times.
I think he was forcing it, and it could be a reaction to the body compensating disconfort in another area.

Trust me, you DO NOT want that to happen, especially with Giannis' size and build. You saw what happened to KD in 2019 and he was out from round 2 to the finals when it happened to him. Then his Achilles ruptured. This is not the same as what happened in 2021.
