My view is pinhole glasses will reduce eye strain since you're not using your ciliary muscles. Which will prevent spasms for extended close up work. But to improve your eyesight, the ciliary muscles need to be exercised. Pinhole glasses for extended close up but get out there and focus far and close during the day without them. What do you think?
Pinhole glasses prove that the real cause of myopia is a deficiency in "centralization" with regard to a person's overall visual system. I am going to try making the pinholes a bit bigger (with a drill and small diameter bit) and see if this will help as a progressive tool.
And how exactly do they prove this? Curious since most prevailing science is pretty clear on NITM and lens-induced myopia. Always open to new ideas. ;)
@@endmyopia Why else does the ability to see something with accuity improve while looking through a tiny pinhole? My explanation is the pinhole does the centralizing for you. No need for a corrective lense to correct for incorrect focal length, eyeball shape, etc. I think Bates and others maintain this position as well. Because the real problem apparently is a lack of centralization which the pinhole provides. I agree that NITM and eyeglasses destroy natural eyesight, so you bring up a good point. Perhaps the constant near point activity impairs a person's natural centralization ability?
I've been using pinhole glasses for 30 years. I have no doubt that eye strain is reduced using pinhole glasses. Prescription lenses cultivate a stare, causing eye strain. I have prescription glasses, I hate wearing them.
I am short-sighted and when using a pc all day I needed a stronger prescription, upon taking up a driving job for a year my eyes improved a lot. Now sadly back to the pc and I'm back to needing a stronger prescription. So yes sitting close to a screen does make your vision worse. Proven.
I wear prescription glasses that adjust to light ( Inside and out ), even on my computer and with a larger monitor, there is less strain on the eyes as opposed to a smaller one. Wearing the glasses removes the glare and strain...

I saw a comment on a different video saying that from using pinhole glasses, their vision is now 20/10. It sure helped them. So I don’t see why people say otherwise.
Jake, I like this video, and it's clear you wanted to make the video to better inform your audience, but I honestly believe that the person(s) asking about these glasses only meant to ask if the pinhole glasses work like prescription glasses do with correcting "short term" eye sight/focus. Not like they would do anything for long term improvement. The glass shop behind you has me wondering if you are a little biased against the pinhole glasses, perhaps to sell more of your product instead. :)
Hi Jake! You're great but so are pinholes, especially for high myopias with astigmatism, maybe not so much for low myops. I actually find it easier to perform active focus on an object and letters at a distance with and after removing pinhole glasses. It's comfortable actually, feeling my eye muscles relaxing, of course using it for distance and not more close up. Hope you would give pinhole a little more credit, cheers! 😉
I just wear this glass and its really improve my vision, black font much blacker and thicker, I can read electrical information written on laptop adapter but need some more light to see clearly, without it I cannot read it at all its too blurry
I've experienced immediate benefits with my pinhole glasses received as a gift. I can read all sorts of fine print that I previously required glasses for. My long and medium distance vision is nearly perfect but it's been close up vision that's bothered me. They look odd but I don't care! They work.
Don’t get the glasses if you have floaters it makes the floaters even more pronounce and Boulder It’s like you’re trying to see underwater with someone splashing in front of you
I have pinhole glasses really exercise and blood circulation... I feel refreshed...I don't think improved vision not that much.. feel a bit lighter eyesight... Look more clearly.
I can't read sheet music with my glasses or my reading glasses. Just had my yearly eye exam and was told this as good as it gets. Great. I will try pinhole glasses and see if it helps. Nice video but, it would be more believable if it was given by someone with thick glasses and knows what it is like to be blind without them.
I have tried them and do find an improvement while wearing them. I have no idea if there's any long term effects and there are no serious studies out there. Question: Ophtalmologists and optometrists use a pinhole eye cover to test vision. Why?
heres proof, put on a pair wear for 10 minutes and start reading a document in your hand, then take off and watch as you have to push the document further away to continue reading
but i can read with pinhole glasses and relax my eye way more then if i am reading without. So straying all the time in front of the computer this pinhole glasses helps me out alot as i dont feel that closeup strain when wearing them.
Pinhole works, yes, sir. But Pinhole does not work alone to cure myopia, the person has to do some exercises together, I tell you this because I used it and it worked perfectly to me, but as I said I did several exercises with discipline, everyday for hour, but the person have to do the exercise at least 2 hours and use the Pinhole glasses should only be used for 1 hour per day, not more that this. Note: I do not sell pinhole, I do not know personal or work for anyone who sells, plus I tell you that you use your creativity to make yourselves your own pinhole glasses, because it's easy. In yotube there are several videos where some person teaches the exercises to improve your eyes. Now I tell you need discipline, discipline, discipline, then in 6 months you are healed if you have low myopia, but if you have high will need more discipline, means more time to exercise. For who have problem to read, it will be faster, 3 months. Many different problems can get excellent results. I have to say doing the exercises with discipline, Practicing, Practicing you will have success. Believe me.
1) Pinhole glasses do not "work". 2) There are no eye exercises. There are only habits. "Eye exercises" are a scam designed to waste your time and money.
Ok be a slave to your glasses No one is forcing you to try exercising, but do not affirm what you certainly did not try for at least 3 months every day.
jorrgefromage Exercises do exist, to strengthen the ciliary muscles in the eyes (Bates method). I don't see how doing exercises would waste money but I do see how eye glasses would waste money for a simple crutch which only panders to the symptom and not to the root of the problem. How much have you looked into exercises ('Habits', whatever you want to call them) like the Bates Method for you to come to such a conclusion or is the conclusion you have come to based on ignorance? I have done Bate's Method to a degree where I have seen improvement over a month's timeline. What excuse you make will not do you or anyone else any favours unless you are a sadist (Getting off to putting people's hopes down based on disinformation) or you are in the spectacle industry and doing so may keep others from improving eyesight and therefore improving revenue.
Hey, bud. I just read your article about this and have one question: Wouldn't wearing pinhole glasses instead of the usual glass ones reduce progressive, lens-induced myopia? Thanks! Glad to have found your page.
I am going to take off my -6 contact lenses and try this with something that requires my eyes to focus on far distance for long periods of time. I'll ride a bike or drive for a few weeks and I'll let everyone in these comments know if it works! I'll keep you guys updated
With -6 myopia if that person drove a car with only pinhole glasses I bet they crashed into something or might be in jail for dangerous driving so you might never have any answer.
I want to tell you that my eyesight is very strong meaning that my peripheral vision annoys me. It doesn't annoy me much but when I was little it used to annoy me a lot more. For example; one object will bother my peripheral vision and I would have to move it away. The object never bothered me when I looked directly at it, it only bothered me when I didn't look directly at it, meaning that it bothered just my peripheral vision. Later on I discovered the pinhole glasses and it seemed to downgrade my vision which made the object not annoy my peripheral vision if they are in the spectrum of the pinhole glasses.
Pin hole glasses will work if u slowly start from from pin hole size hole to to slightly bigger hole every month.....it will strech ur muscles same way like if u strech ur legs day by day
im so lost rn, this comment section is so divided, ARE PINHOLE GLASSES GOOD OR BAD???? 😭 edit: i wanna clarify what i mean by this, if there is the SLGHTEST bit of evidence pinhole glasses can help reduce myopia, that is good and i will try them. if there is no evidence whatsoever and it may even increase myopia, that would be bad.
I have been using them as "differntial" glasses instead of "reading" glasses just for computer work. Do they not do the same thing, or am I totally misunderstanding your blog posts?
Pinhole glasses are only 20 & while prescription glasses put thousands of dolars in big pharma pocket . I am using them they do work How can a 20 buck plastic thing be a scam???? And whats the benefit of advertising it ???
so pinholes dont work by themselves but with relaxation and Active focusing, they probably will....pinholes enable me to AF further like when watching tv which is very helpful indoors where I would need to AF very close to my face
I use pinhole for using computers. Generally while using a phone or reading I just don't use glasses but computers that I need to use two hours a week are too close to use my prescriptions glasses but too far for me to type properly pinholes are good alternatives
Exactly which eye muscles that have anything to do with myopia, focus, or acuity are "weak" precisely? Right answer: None. Myopia isn't a "weak eye muscle" problem. And what determines focus is the ciliary muscle, which isn't affected by pinhole glasses. #knowyourbiology
All that is good, except that it seems that this review on pinhole glasses is based more on ignorance and confirmation bias more than anything though. The idea of using pinhole glasses instead of minus lenses is that it forces the light rays to be projected to your eyes in tiny bundles, thereby dramatically reducing aberrations both in the center and the periphery of the eye. This means that for someone with -6D of myopia or less, doing close work with pinhole (instead of minus lenses) can help eliminate the hyperopic defocus induced to both the central and peripheral retina. In fact, if you ever wear pinhole glasses, you should be able to tell that wearing pinhole for close work does not incur the nasty blurring vision as the usual minus glasses would do - and this is sometimes even true when an appropriately underprescribed pair of minus lenses is used. But then of course, it's always a good idea to refrain from oversimplification in general. Since pinhole glasses restrict an enormous amount of light to the eyes, it's much harder for it to be used for reading physical books than, say, computer work, where the monitor itself already provides an appropriate amount of light. In addition, the honeycomb effect of pinhole can be a bit annoying to get used to - since it can occur at times that one needs to look through some specific holes to attain clarity of vision. So as with any other topic, the effects of pinhole glasses is a bit more subtle than most of us realize. While substituting pinhole with minus lenses for close work can address the cause of myopia, there is no evidence that it can actually provide stimulus to reverse it. So while it could be part of a myopia mitigation strategy (along with an appropriated prescribed distance lenses), it would probably be a stretch (and perhaps debilitating) to use it for distance activities.
+Thomas Lu I barely scratched the surface. Serious optical distortion from pinhole images -try wearing pinhole glasses for close up for any length of time and witness the mother of all headaches. The logical way to deal with myopia is addressing focal planes, not increasing depth of field at the serious expense of image continuity and ignoring myopia degree in that process. Also yes, myopic defocus does provide the stimulus necessary to potentially reverse axial elongation. Check the studies.
He’s just telling you what he believes, of course he hasn’t done any research to prove what he says. With a wall full of glasses behind him, I don’t think it’s in his best interest to recommend pinhole glasses. They do actually help you become more independent from prescription glasses, not 100% but they do help.
this video is old but how come one person can have the opinion of everybody else.there is ppl that say using thos glasses their vision improve... he sell somethig else is why
I just received my pinhole glasses today and i tried it on immediately and it looks cool though 😎 well i hope it works! There's just one thing how come i feel sleepy on this glasses? 😆
That is simple to answer..but i suggest you do a read up about sleeping cycles..and why we feel sleepy...but in short..it's because the eyes gets lesser light..signaling to the brain that it is night..the brain starts to produce some chemicals and preparing the body/tells the body it's night..it's time to sleep....but as i said..look it up.
$2000 contacts that temporarily flatten your cornea? 😂😆👍🏻 See my article on Ortho. Of all the silly shortcut attempts to patent some “slow down myopia” trinket, Ortho-K is provably the most embarrassing (and with pretty serious side effects potential).
Ok but can you tell me someone who has benefited or got better vision with prescription glasses? Everyone I know with glasses (including me as well) have got worse eyes and no benefits from glasses, because your industry is just a scam. It's like putting a blindfold on and expecting one day to start seeing through the blindfold. In fact, I don't think anyone ever has got any kind of benefit from regular glasses, why has nobody realized this? Why is nobody going against it? It is the same thing media has done with cancer, brainwashing us to think their meds or therapy helps, but does it really? I wish I could go back to fifth grade where it first started and do natural ways and exercises for my eyes, but I was too brainwashed. I bet my eyes would be fixed to 20/20 vision within a year or two
Madison Swendsen so true i agree with you. these are money hungry commercial industries that profit from your eyes getting worse. children should start immediately the moment a bit of myopia is diagnosed to exercise eyes wear pinholes and if required ortho k ... no glasses ever
U are right about does glasses and I decided made one and I took the metal from microwave door which are with smaller distance between holes and I don’t need set up eye to hole, and I can read clearly, I notice that I can exercise eye retina, something like gazing, mowing slowly up and down glasses during reading.
what about astigmatism jake? myopia i can understand but shouldn't this have some effect on angular vision? I'm just curious. i am not a fan of pinhole glasses but if you could tell
Looking through a pinhole will improve sharpness of vision for those with astigmatism, but just like myopia, pinhole glasses doesn't address the cause. That is, it will not reverse astigmatism. Caveat: I'm not an expert, but I am astigmatic and have done a reasonable amount of research.
Thank you so much, we were reading in those but switched to reading by putting a book as far as it’s still possible to read. I understand now that a healthy child is better than super smart one but in glasses. We’re waiting for videos with ideas for games with kids.
Thanks useful, but I am still going to try those pinhole glasses because my understanding is that they probably make a very useful cheap pair of reading glasses without the possible side effects of lenses. If that is true maybe you shoud reconsider your answer to whether they work or not... I never really trusted the Bates method as i don't trust any Olistic theory, so I never believed these glasses would heal anything... but the physical effect of actually being able to read wearing them, is proven. If what you are saying is that the Bates method doesn't work, well I am with you on that one: it's an olistic "science", therefore a NOT a science at all :)

I've worn pinhole glasses for years. I find also that they don't improve vision. I've used it to reduce residual eyestrain after a long day of near point work.
While pin-holes are good against snow-blindness and so on, the reasons why they do not improve vision is, just as your nose is one of two structures which grows all your life long, the other is the lense of your eye, . . . and so, as the lens diameter is increasing, the muscles are weakening, . . .
Jake Steiner thanks I reversed it once back to were it almost was a couple of years before I'm having a harder time this time. just heard about your channel.
For the most part, yes. Similar principles, though of course different cause than myopia. Even though the lens hardens, plus lenses only become necessary if close vision isn't regularly challenged. Use it or lose it! :)

@JakeSteiner I thought they helped because they make you shift and your eyes make loads of small movements because of the barriers (between the holes). Is this untrue?

My view is pinhole glasses will reduce eye strain since you're not using your ciliary muscles. Which will prevent spasms for extended close up work. But to improve your eyesight, the ciliary muscles need to be exercised. Pinhole glasses for extended close up but get out there and focus far and close during the day without them. What do you think?
With regular glasses distance is still a problem, bring something too close and it's hard to focus, with pinholes close distances are better
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!" -- Upton Sinclair
I'd be interested in making some pinholes with a peripheral defocus. Can we try it on your eyes first ; )
Wow a lot of positive comments on pin hole glasses
I've been using pinhole glasses for 30 years. I have no doubt that eye strain is reduced using pinhole glasses. Prescription lenses cultivate a stare, causing eye strain. I have prescription glasses, I hate wearing them.
Hi did you notice an improvement with your eyesight please?
Do you use them for near or far vision?
I am short-sighted and when using a pc all day I needed a stronger prescription, upon taking up a driving job for a year my eyes improved a lot. Now sadly back to the pc and I'm back to needing a stronger prescription. So yes sitting close to a screen does make your vision worse. Proven.
I wear prescription glasses that adjust to light ( Inside and out ), even on my computer and with a larger monitor, there is less strain on the eyes as opposed to a smaller one.
Wearing the glasses removes the glare and strain...
I would not take advice from someone who hasn't at-least bought one and tried one.

I sometimes wonder if Jake is told to say this stuff. Maybe he is funded by certain institutions that he doesn’t want to piss off.
Agreed!!!!!!
They work.

If it works for you ... do it.
The only thing i need to know is that if these will do any harm...if not, I'll try them
Can these glasses help far sighted vision too?
True, I was using them by aprox 8 months and absolutly nothing happened to my eyesight , myopia still there :P
Eye exercises do not exist. Endmyopia teach "habits". It's two different things.
jorrgefromage Exercises do exist, to strengthen the ciliary muscles in the eyes (Bates method).
Hey, bud. I just read your article about this and have one question:
Wouldn't wearing pinhole glasses instead of the usual glass ones reduce progressive, lens-induced myopia?
Thanks! Glad to have found your page.
I am going to take off my -6 contact lenses and try this with something that requires my eyes to focus on far distance for long periods of time. I'll ride a bike or drive for a few weeks and I'll let everyone in these comments know if it works! I'll keep you guys updated
how did it go?
Would love to know too, any improvements on your sight?
With -6 myopia if that person drove a car with only pinhole glasses I bet they crashed into something or might be in jail for dangerous driving so you might never have any answer.
@@onaorkal think he died in a car crash...You should never ever wear pinhole glasses when driving or riding on the road.
Its unsafe
Hey how is it going?
edit: i wanna clarify what i mean by this, if there is the SLGHTEST bit of evidence pinhole glasses can help reduce myopia, that is good and i will try them. if there is no evidence whatsoever and it may even increase myopia, that would be bad.
I have been using them as "differntial" glasses instead of "reading" glasses just for computer work. Do they not do the same thing, or am I totally misunderstanding your blog posts?
I wouldn't use pinhole glasses. Not the right stimulus, doesn't change the focal plane!
i know this vid is old but i think one place where pin hole shades will shine is when you dont want foggy glasses when going out in the cold
Pinhole glasses are only 20 & while prescription glasses put thousands of dolars in big pharma pocket . I am using them they do work
How can a 20 buck plastic thing be a scam???? And whats the benefit of advertising it ???
The point is, they don't benefit your eyes in any ways at all. If you just got the right diopter differentials, they're less than $20 online. 🤷🏼♂️
so pinholes dont work by themselves but with relaxation and Active focusing, they probably will....pinholes enable me to AF further like when watching tv which is very helpful indoors where I would need to AF very close to my face
Would if we use the pinhole glasses the right way by challenging our vision with longer distances?
Pinhole glasses work for me.
I use pinhole for using computers. Generally while using a phone or reading I just don't use glasses but computers that I need to use two hours a week are too close to use my prescriptions glasses but too far for me to type properly pinholes are good alternatives
Pin hole glasses are great for light reading to help strength your eye muscles.
@@endmyopia muscles.... Ciliary muscles.....strong weak ...lens fixed at same point due to less active ciliary movements...

Or also, not any of that. 🤔😉
@@endmyopia ???
^^^ Jake You Need To Respond To This ^^^
+Thomas Lu I barely scratched the surface.

Prescription glasses don't improve eyesight either
I just received my pinhole glasses today and i tried it on immediately and it looks cool though 😎 well i hope it works! There's just one thing how come i feel sleepy on this glasses? 😆
That is simple to answer..but i suggest you do a read up about sleeping cycles..and why we feel sleepy...but in short..it's because the eyes gets lesser light..signaling to the brain that it is night..the brain starts to produce some chemicals and preparing the body/tells the body it's night..it's time to sleep....but as i said..look it up.
I guess you have never heard about Orthokeratology, pinhole glasses work the same way, so you do not need to wear glasses outside or 24/7.

Am I bad at English, or is this is hard to be understood?
I bet my eyes would be fixed to 20/20 vision within a year or two
It is only two dollars anyway better then buying $400 glasses

Just make sure not to use that microwave anymore. That metal is supposed to protect you from the microwaves.
what about astigmatism jake? myopia i can understand but shouldn't this have some effect on angular vision? I'm just curious. i am not a fan of pinhole glasses but if you could tell
Looking through a pinhole will improve sharpness of vision for those with astigmatism, but just like myopia, pinhole glasses doesn't address the cause.
That is, it will not reverse astigmatism.
Caveat: I'm not an expert, but I am astigmatic and have done a reasonable amount of research.

Would laser eye surgery work even better to improve eye sight?
Even. Yes.

While pin-holes are good against snow-blindness and so on, the reasons why they do not improve vision is, just as your nose is one of two structures which grows all your life long, the other is the lense of your eye, . . . and so, as the lens diameter is increasing, the muscles are weakening, . . .
