  • In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I discuss how to sell your watch. There are many different ways. Sell it to an Authorized Dealer, Gray Market Dealer (diamond district) or online via eBay or a forum. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. From paying paypal fees and security to receiving less money due to margins.

    Federico - I appreciate your perspective in these videos. You've really carved out something special here on UA-cam for all of us watch addicts. I was gonna write to Tristano and tell him that he needs to consecrate you the "Lieutenant Governor," but you really are an original as is he. Keep up the great content!

    regarding eBay, not to mention if you are new to eBay as a seller and your piece is of any value say over $2000 there are many scam artist that will target you, they will request for you to send the watch to an address other than their address listed in the "buy now" response for example. Be very wary of anyone who asks you once they reply to your add in eBay to correspond going forward and do the deal outside of eBay and have any type of story that they need you to respond to a different email address or ship to a different address.. unfortunately a reality as a new seller selling an item like a watch of great value on eBay.

    Why should you delete de serial number from the pictures? I have never really understood the reason.

    • @Dankyjrthethird
      @Dankyjrthethird 5 років тому +1

      I think it has something to do with people using that serial number for their replicas
      For example they can copy the serial number from a real watch, then engrave it on the case of their replica and pass it off as the real thing

    Authorized Dealers: 15 to 35 cents on the dollar! Grey Market 50 cents on the dollar - as a newbie considering to invest in luxury watches that's painful to take in. So basically I would need an investment watch to more than double in value to even break even. How many watches do that over the course of 4 or 5 years? Maybe I'll stick to train robbery

    • @FedericoTalksWatches
      @FedericoTalksWatches  6 років тому +1

      Watches are NOT an investment.

    • @grandvizir
      @grandvizir 5 років тому

      Federico Talks Watches everything is an investment tho... there is some watches, mostly high end, which are worth more than the retail price. I walked in a Rolex AD and found a gmt Batman retail price for 8200 euros and they are selling for 10k at least in the grey market. Needless to say that works with a few watches but if you find the right ones... happen to me with the g-shocks 35th anniversary, during the hype I found 2 of them, sold the golden one for 1000 euros ( paid 550 euros retail ) and the silver one is selling for 650/700 up to 800 ( retail for 500 euro )... gotta watch for the next trend, buy retail max and wait for the sold out to sell.
      You could maybe do a video about “flipping” watches and how hard it is to buy from an ad and sell it after. Here in France ad don’t sell more than one model of a very asked watch because they assume it’s for resale.

    Interesting content Federico! Question: How do you protect yourself as a SELLER when selling online in case of someone returns you a different watch as what you shipped him? Usually PayPal tends to protect buyers way more than sellers in case of disputes. Greets from Italy!

    Federico, I recently when to an AD to sell my wife's Rolex. I had two on-line trade in prices and he offered above both. I thought it was an extremely fair price. I could not have gotten much more on eBay but I would have needed to pay fees and shipping. In good faith, I am giving him 2-weeks to get me a Rolex Explorer II. I have been selling lower end watches on eBay and doing OK.

    The biggest tip I tell people who sell watches is to buy the watch so you can wear the watch so the costumer can see the watch on you! how it looks and wears! I had retailers come to me to yes to trade. So I make them a deal when needed! I trade so many watches to something I want! I barder! Thanks for the video!

    Top notch content as always. I have flipped some watches through eBay and the forums, and your advice is spot on. Pics should look as professional as possible, and the ad should be worded in an intelligent and knowledgeable manner. One thing I hate is when sellers just cut and paste the spec sheet and add no further info. Also, quick shipping and careful packaging can work wonders for your feedback/reputation. Buyers appreciate when they can see that care was taken when packing the watch, and everybody likes getting an item earlier than they expect. Treating each other as we would want to be treated really shows respect for the hobby, and in my experience most watch guys (&gals) get that.

    Regarding sale price, is it industry norm to cut down the price that much? 30~35% for Rolex or Patek seems like quite a huge cut when selling to ADs. Can you elaborate on the conditions? (e.g quality, warranty, years of ownership, etc.)

    Great info, but unfortunately there are too many "cheap" people out there. I like a bargain like the next guy but I also know a great deal (say an authentic like new $10k Rolex for $4k - no brainer) but there are still ALOT of people going to offer $2k or less!!! AD's are like used car dealers- they wont even give you blue book, Ebay has too many PayPal/ebay fees - about 15% when all said and done. Locally- good luck!! Depending where you live - lots of cheapskates!!! People making unreasonable offers for a 6k watch- I tell them maybe they should go buy a Citizen or Invicta with that kind if offer.

    I very rarely comment but I felt I needed too this time about your forum recommendations. I will admit I find the technology a bit dated. My main comment is that playing around a little bit with timezone etc I find that feel that unless one is a fairly "mature" user of those forums, it is not a place a newbie should use to buy or sell a watch. It feels too risky. If one is sophisticated like you then perhaps. Nevertheless, I really appreciate your knowledge in educating us.

    Hello Federico, you do not address a question that I had made before. How to value your watch before you sell. Just to say 30 cents maybe ok but its to broad. I suggest that anyone looking to sell should look for sold listings on eBay to get a better idea of how much consumers are willing to pay for a comparable watch. Additionally since its typically spans several weeks you can see if there is a trend developing in pricing or even in models as you can tailor the search as if you were looking to buy. In absence of a trustworthy source of historical values (a Watch Blue Book) thats about the only tool I use.
    Couple of days ago I was looking at an auction and tracked it to end. And it did confirm my suspicion that there is a trend developing on the upside for an specific Omega model of Seamster from 12 years ago. its going up and if it continues it would confirm that its time to buy now. That why we need a forum or FB page to records recent pricing.

    • @FedericoTalksWatches
      @FedericoTalksWatches  8 років тому +2

      +Ismael Martinez I would use completed eBay listings to value the watch and see what other people are trying to sell it at on forums etc... I do not love auctions (from auction houses), their prices never include the 20-30% buyers premiums and fees... I also do not love eBay because I rely on reputation and eBay feedback is not enough for me...
