  • How To Predict If A Watch Will Go UP In Value ! - Federico Talks Watches
    In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I am going to talk about something that many people get wrong. Watches that will go up in value. Specifically, how to predict if a watch will go up in value. Looking and things such as the personality of the watch, watch brand perception and the condition of the watch. All of these things link directly to a watches value. Let me know what you guys think in the description below.

    Great video, one thing I've noticed is that if you post a picture of a watch you like on a forum or facebook group invariably somebody comments that your watch is a horrible investment and you will lose money when you sell it. That does not happen when I post a picture of a car, TV, shoes, or anything else

    Great Vid. I liked the information in this video. The obvious famous example of a watch which had its value increased due to celebrity and exposure and as you said, changes of "how the watches are perceived", is of course the Newman Daytona. Eventually becoming the most expensive Rolex on the planet.

    In my view, a fine watch destined to be a "lifetime keeper", should always be purchased new.
    Over the course of decades, I purchased all my keepers directly from the manufacturer's boutique in Geneva, where I've had a long-term relationship. That way you can be completely assured of its provenance and authenticity. I purchased watches to mark special benchmarks in my life, and I have always used emotions to make the final decision after "sleeping on it". Try to avoid impulse buying as often that can result in regret. Make your decision carefully, take care of your timepiece and enjoy! These are made for those who love and appreciate them, not those who want to make a profit from later sale..

    Being a watch fan newbie. I fell into the trap of buying a second hand timex. It arrived not working. I took it to a watch repairer who said it wasn't worth fixing and to just throw it away. I've only got a skx007 and a g shock. I've sold a few crappy watches I don't wear and I'm going to save for something worth having. But wasting £25 on non working timex sucks. Appreciate your honesty.

    Hi Fed. I've got a Romain Jerome Moondust that needed a replacement in the carbon fiber of the case. The service was made in Switzerland by the actual factory and since the problem was a result of the own brand and not a bad use of the watch the top of the case was replaced by the brand itself. Does that mean that it's a no no if I ever try to sell it (not that I'm willing to get rid of my timepiece)? Keep up with the awesome content and cheers from Brazil. You're channel is amazing!

    IMHO following patterns on Hodinkee is the best way to smell blood. Their PR machine works. 2 or 3 articles in a month about Tudor, and Tudor became hot, then it was IWC, then TAG, now Breitling. Not to mention steel Rolexes and FPJournes. Even the Seiko 5 SNKL23 went from $60 to $150.

    Great vid! I've been collecting for awhile and I have yet to profit off of any watch I've sold. Granted I'm not collecting mid to high end watches, it is of my opinion that your thoughts are spot on. The one watch I've sold at 10% above of what I paid for, was offset by the cost of the upgraded strap that was put in the place of the mediocre stock strap. Breaking even is the best I can do unless I buy at a huge discount (30-50%), which is rarely possible.
    Bottom line, watches = terrible investment

    I really hope there's a resurgence of Girard Perregaux soon. I know, I know. The Laureato is slowly making a comeback, but the brand itself is still quite weak in the market. That said, in my humble opinion, they are every bit as prestigious as JLC. One can expect an in-house movement as well as some incredibly well-executed, often rare complications (if not the most original designs). I'm concerned that the Ferrari partnership may have hurt them though (as it did Panerai). GP suited a classic Ferrari, not a modern one, and by the time the partnership was formed, Ferrari was much more associated with Hublot and other flashier brands than its actual brand partner (though, with the current Hublot partnership, it looks like Ferrari has finally gotten it right). What do you think, Fed. Is there any reason for GP to make a comeback, particularly given the comparatively weak and inexperienced Kering Group ownership?

    I'm a new watch collector but there is a question that is driving me nuts. Why is it that the majority of wristwatches I see on display are always set at the time, 10 minutes after 10 or 8 minutes after 10? Not all watches on display are set at that time but I've noticed many many many of them are. Why? What is it about that time? This is going to drive me crazy.

      The hands 1) form a "V" shape, signify victory, 2) frame and accentuate the logo, 3)do not obstruct the date or other functions, 4) There is no other position that would make sense or symmetrically aesthetic.

    Investing in vintage is a pretty risky endeavor unless you really know what you are doing. As their are many great modern brands especially some of the independents but their are really two safe bets in general, Rolex & Patek Philippe. With that said if the Millennials & upcoming gen Z don't take a real interest in mechanical watches then its all over, the baby boomers are aging & not consuming like they once did & the gen Xers having the smallest birth rate just don't have the numbers to drive the market.

    Well ya just threw TGV under the bus.....he has a vid about watches that will go up in value recently released. I almost made a comment on that vid saying there is no way anyone can say a watch will go up in value, it’s a lie, but didn’t want to start a drama war. Anyways it is good that you say that, while,better then most, you even know most watches lose their value. Good vid and keep up the good work.
    On a side note. Your wearing a watch that someone already bought? Yikes. Unless they said that’s ok, I think that’s a poor business move as it really isn’t yours. Also saying you did “pretty good” on the sale is kinda a shameless pat on the back and another sorta low move especially if the buyer is watching this vid. Honestly if I were that buyer and saw this video I would cancel the order

    • @FedericoTalksWatches
      @FedericoTalksWatches  6 років тому +5

      Bradley, it sold to a very good friend and I had permission. The watch also sold for fair market value (actually under). Excuse me for making a profit and using a real life example. I am a business after all!

    • @bradleysmith7542
      @bradleysmith7542 6 років тому +7

      If you had permission then no worries. I guess as regards the profit margin on the watch the choice of words made it seem off putting. Saying that a good deal was made but the way you put it made it seems like the buyer overpaid and you made a killing. It’s fine if you did but saying so would have ticked me off as a buyer. Anyways just an opinion. Keep up the good work on your vids

    Tudor Submariner (40mm) any any vintage Tudor Chronograph...even the Tiger. Anything sports steel watches with Rolex parts will go up. But I will admit that I sold a very nice 94010 Snowflake because I just didn't like it that much...I'm sure I will bang my head on the wall in a few years when they go for about 10k standard.
    The Tudor 79090 and 79190 are great buys right now and many can be had in good condition for just at or under 4k with blue dial and bezel. If I get another Tudor it will be a 79190.
    If you are going to pay 4k for any Tudor and want to get your money back someday, the 79x90 is the way to go.
    Speaking bout vintage chronos...I have a sweet Longines Diving Chrono with a V72 that is 42mm. The prices have skyrocketed on anything like this. Shit I sold a Aristo Chrono with a non-lumed dial(i.e. no nasty radium) for around 1.5k which is nuts considering what I got it for. Agreed, vintage 3 register manual wind over sized chronos are going up.

    Well with every “collectible” market there are a very small percentage of items that will increase in value. Cars, guns, pocket knives, baseball cards, etc. I don’t see the harm in saying you think a watch will increase in value. Of course adding the caveat that investing in watches is not the best way to “get rich.” Idk obviously this is a response to TGV but in this case I don’t have a real problem with what TGV did.

    And yet the contradiction of this video is that Fed is a watch dealer. He makes a living out of selling watches. So it can’t be the case that 9/10 times watches are a horrible investment. A truer statement is you really need to know your stuff if you want to make a return. But that aside, I enjoyed the video and the advice. Thanks

    • @FedericoTalksWatches
      @FedericoTalksWatches  6 років тому

    • @vishy

      Federico Talks Watches ... you buy watches at a lower price that are undervalued and then sell them on for a profit. So by definition you sell watches that were undervalued. I’m not criticising as I love your videos - it’s just that it seems a slight contradiction to me. Otherwise how would the second hand watch dealing market exist? If you always buy wisely and at the right price you will very rarely lose a dime on watches. But your choice will be severely restricted and you will lose out on certain frivolous joys. Keep up the great vids Fed and wish you continued success in your new venture

    The more I think about it, watches in the upper-shitter segment that gain in value might be the Raymond Weil Beatles and David Bowie limited editions. They have a proprietary movement (for now) that they claim was developed with and manufactured by (read: cloned) by Sellita (read: drop-in). They might not be on par horologically with others in their price range but there are far more fans of the Beatles and David Bowie fans than there are watch enthusiasts, certainly a lot more than the 3000 units of each watch. I think the value of these would be worth monitoring in 10 years when music fans discover or rediscover their existence and overvalue them.
