I disagree with the description of dragons. I thought it was like genus and species while you can have a dragon genus and a dragon species with all other species fall in the same genus. Atleast as far as crypto-zoology goes.
Hey Kyle, would'nt a better strategy have been to coat a lance in an LD50 substance, corner it in its lair, and then make a mounted charge?
A warhorse is around 900KG. Add in the weight of a mounted knight to be 80KG + armour and gear to be about 130, and then add barding onto the horse and we'll call the total mass of you and your mount at around 1130KG. Assuming the horse is heavily laden and not running at top speed which has been clocked at 90-ish km/hr and assuming 60, the total force potential is around 157356.2 Newtons-ish, and then if you couch a lance and exert all that force onto a small point. Even IF that doesn't immediately kill the dragon, the internal trauma would be enough to at least stun the beast to allow the LD50 substance to do its work! Plus, you've got a horse to make your withdrawal on! Also, plus plus, you've now got a horse! And horses are majestic.
The dragon uses no weapons but those built into itself, why fight it like a coward? No swords Kyle, no glittering mail, fight the dragon as he fights naked and unarmed only then can you truly claim victory!
@@Fluffy1877 Tactic needs open terrain, a long enough runway, so the horse can get to the 60km/h aaaand the dragon not noticing you while you gallop towards it. I'd say sneaking up to it while it sleeps, cutting the underside of the tail with a poisoned sword and then get the hell away is the better tactic.

1) Stand beside its back legs to avoid most of attacks
2) Cut the tail off
and most importantly
3) You can cheese it by poisoning it and cowardly running away

Attack big muscle connecting leg and tail... I didn't realize going for the buttocks of giant bosses in Dark Souls has science as back up.
Hilariously, the butt is one of the most important muscles in bipeds - Humans have very large, muscly rear ends, and it's one of the few truly unique things about us, allowing us to hunt down prey by simply jogging them to death.

@@beccag2758 I think that if the dragon is cold blooded as soon as the temperature drops too much too quickly he'd basically "shut down" and go to sleep or at least he'd be too slow, weak and sleepy to fight.

What about a hydra? Checkmate, mister science man.
Assuming you didn't blow the heads clean off, so no shotguns or (more) explosive projectiles, and assuming that you managed a kill shot on every single head, it'd probably work just fine.
@@rowanwinn4723 The Hydra's regeneration ability is shown a lot after having the head chopped off, but in the original myth with Hercules: it could regenerate/produce more heads even if they were only crushed by a club. So I think a bullet still wouldn't be able to do the trick.
@@TheChristmasNinja12 True, but one can wound a hydra head without triggering the growth of a new one. (Well, two.) So if one were to keep the damage mostly contained to eye and brain, i.e. by using a low-powered handgun rather than a sniper rifle, you might be able to kill the creature entirely. Unless the growth is triggered by a cessation of signals from the brain, in which case Heracles probably had the best idea.
@@rowanwinn4723 True. I would assume that the regrowth effect is triggered by the "death" of a head, as opposed to some prerequisite amount of damage. I would also like to think of it as being somewhat similar, biologically, to when lizards sacrifice their tails or when crabs willingly detach their limbs.
The hydra, upon sensing the death of a head, simply cuts off blood-flow to the area and pulls the entire head/neck off, detaching it at the shoulders to allow two new heads to grow back in without issue.

I feel like a fantasy world that includes Dragons but doesn't include Sniper Rifles probably wouldn't include concentrated Botox either.
Botox is a trademark and does not appear in scifi either.
Botulinum appears in nature the same way aspirin and antibiotics. You collect them from plants and fungi.
While willow bark extract has also been used by some 10000 years to treat pain and fever, its just last 100 years its been called aspirin. Concentrating botulinum might require a lab, but options are plentiful, and dont actually require actual concentrate to work.. Puffer fish poison and poison arrow frog poison are just some of the most famous examples of nature not only providing cures but strong poisons.
Easiest solution would be bolts and arrows dipped in feces. Slow but certain death also.

@@thomasfplm Well, adequate luck. These poisons are extremely powerful, and since overdose is not a problem, indeed its the goal, proper dosage is "a lot". Shouldnt be a problem to even the sword-wielding warrior-types.

The Dragons he didn't cover are Eastern Dragons, but those are god level nature spirits and not something you can just slay like a European Dragon.

Edit: Well the big thing is that even though a Dragon would be better at breathing in low oxygen environs it still needs a massive amount of oxygen. So the fire breath consuming all that oxygen would just be bad for all parties involved.

You're welcome, my man
Kyle, I think you may be wrong about the approach. Dragons are renown for the acuity of their senses, and in a way, so are reptiles. While the D&D 5e Monsters Manual doesn't indicate that dragons have the heat sensing organs that are found in some reptiles (like boas and pit vipers), we can use Tolkien's The Hobbit as an example of how hard it is to sneak up on a dragon that was awake. Smaug was able to detect Bilbo, even though Bilbo was invisible due to the One Ring. Smaug said, "Well thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath. Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty and to spare!" If dragons compare to other reptiles, it probably has a very acute sense of smell AND the infamous Jacobson Organ. (They even think the Jacobson Organ helps lizards find water in the desert by detecting changes in humidity. How long can you hold your breath?) And, if dragons can use electrical tuning (again, like lizards) to expand their audible range, then it may be able to hear sounds you're making that you can't. The sad thing is, even if you possessed a ring of invisibility, you're probably not masking off everything a dragon can sense. And this means you're probably toast. Or lunch. Or an Ice Cube. Or a melted puddle of goo. etc. So, you probably want to ditch that two handed sword. A crossbow bolt dipped in your Botulism bacteria, however noisy when fired, will probably still find it's mark long before the dragon can react. Sure, it won't cut the muscle, but it'll start working on whatever nervous system parts it comes in contact with. The rear haunches are an excellent target if you just want to poison the dragon and reduce it's mobility. The tail is another, even if you don't cut that muscle. And, if you have several crossbows ready, you probably could fire off several shots into different parts of the dragon, and thus increasing the bacterium's chances of bringing down our lizard boi.
Also, the longsword is a poor weapon if you want to chop into a muscle group. It's great at slicing at the surface and for poking deep into the gut or belly of a beast. But it's not the weapon of choice for cleaving. Instead, you probably want to use either a battle axe or a pole axe. The prior has a mass advantage that helps it chop deeply into flesh, while the latter is better for when you don't want to be in the same area as your target. (It's also why swords tended to be a poor execution tool, as it often took several chops of a sword to behead someone. That's why a Guillotine is closer to an axe than a sword.) And, if you have time to prepare (like if you caught the dragon sleeping), you could even brace spears and lances in the ground in the same manner that medieval warlords would do when faced with mounted nights. Then, just wake up the dragon, insult it to the point of hysteria, try to get it to charge at you, and watch it drive those spears into itself like a meat grinder. (Seriously, those medieval guys really knew how to inflict pain and death.)
Thank you for pointing out the sword issue. Swords were backup weapons, much like pistols are today. They were not very good at penetrating armor, and they really weren't good at cutting deep into unarmored targets compared to axes, hammers and spears. The primary weapons of the day were spears, polearms, and various mass weapons designed to pierce, crush or otherwise defeat armor and cause grievous harm to the enemy.
It has already been pointed out that Smaug is not a true dragon but a Wyvern. Comming back to D&D, dragons have true sight and can see invisable things as well as into the etherial plane.
Going ranged is the right call however useing a crossbow is too slow and noisy compared to a longbow which is much quiter and can fire more arrows faster and at a longer range.

@@MegaPaulobrien The Wyvern/Dragon issue is a bit moot, since a lot of stories and game systems have them mostly mechanically similar. And, I used Smaug to point out specifically how hard it is to sneak up on a dragon, and in this case, they are functionally identical.
I suggested a crossbow instead of a longbow because of the puncturing power. Yeah, longbows, especially if you're talking about the historical English Hardwood Longbow, are murder on armored targets. However, we don't just want to puncture the scale armor draconic creatures have. We want the arrows/bolts to get in as deep as possible to deliver the bacterial payload as close to a main branch of nerves as possible.
Also, I don't think we're going to be too concerned with sound once the first arrow/bolt finds its mark. At that point, the creature is definitely going to know it's under attack.
How long did this even take to type up?
And yes, it's pretty common knowledge that dragons have insanely acute senses. Imagine in DnD having a +50 perception modifier

Few things I've picked up on the subject of dragons over the years.
1. The whole Dragon and Wyvern separation is more of a modern thing. Dragon is actually originated from the word Draco which means serpent. So it's a catch all. We are just sorting out many ages and separate depictions with modern terminology. (Sort of like swords)
2. The where not often actually depicted as big as they are in pop culture. Usually around the same size or smaller than a horse. (Some were HUGE though.)
3. Dragons also spewed poison, water, and miasma and not just fire depending on their depiction.
4. Not all of them could fly.
Fun fact: The term "wyvern" originates from "viper", also a serpent.
Fun facts, dragon are modelled after snakes or lizards. The idea of fire breath was based off their flicking tongues. Them getting wings is attributed to fossils with wings. The famous "Dracula" means son of the dragon.
Those points in distinction are a little iffy. First a Distinction that should have been made about this video that it is using a strictly European set of forms. Second the Distinction you made about the size of a dragon on average comes down to specific types and breeds of dragons, as the breed known as Wyrm was absolutely massive for why it got it's name, and in fact most of the smaller sized depictions of dragons was usually noted as not fully grown. Third, the point on Dragons vs. Wyverns is actually the same as Wolf vs Dog, both came from the same source by are different because of evolutionary advantages, as yes Wyverns were seen as different from dragons but fully recognized as a Draconic creature.

According to the definition of fight, this was absolutely a fight.
was there a violent struggle? yes, once the dragon wakes up it will be very violent, and will attempt to maul Kyle, while also struggling to deal with the wound and poison creeping through it's body.
Does this "involve a exchange of physical blows"? Yes, Kyle physically struck the dragon on his starting attack, meanwhile the dragon for several minutes after the fight begins attempts to use fire, tooth, and nail to kill Kyle.
Were weapons used? Yes, Kyle used his mind, (which is he most effective weapon in warfare) a sword, and a toxin. Meanwhile the dragon relies on it's body as a weapon.
By all accounts this was a fight. A dirty fight? fuck ya. but absolutely a fight.

Hey Kyle! Big fan from Estonia, I have been (binge)watching your videos for years now. I have a Masters degree in molecular biology and right now I am getting my 2nd Masters in high school biology teaching. Also, in 10 days I am officially becoming a biology teacher in a really cool high school and I am most exited for it. Wanted to let you know because I get a lot of inspiration from you - teaching style, how to deliver information efficiently (with humor, cool experiments and stressing the redicilous bad-assness of nature) etc. I truly believe you are (at least one of) the reason(s) why I found my passion, which is teaching (although I don't like the word. Delivering scientific and badass information in a really cool way would be more proper. Teaching sounds too... melancholy. But science is cool and badass and I love it). I admire you because you are a textbook example of a person who is really loving what he is doing and your curiosity, energy and hunger for knowledge is contagious. Hope you had the time to read this.

The GATE: and so the special defense force fought fire dragon arc anime has a scene where a dragon is pretty well quantified including speed, turning radius and resistance to modern weaponry. This could possibly be a good source for the standard comparison of dragon fighting science.

However I want to point out something about your opinion on attacking the dragons throat or underbelly. Because of the fact that the dragons normally don't have an ignition source (like a flame or spark) in their mouth it's logical to assume that whatever comes out of the glands in their mouth is hypergolic of some sort (like some rocket fuels) and is either:
-A chemical that is hypergolic with nearly anything like chlorine trifuoride and reacts with something like the dragons spit.
-Two chemicals that react into another chemical like mentioned above.
OR probably the most realistic case:
-Two chemicals that react hypergolic with the corresponding other, a good example for this would be aniline and nitric acid. (I chose those two because they seemed like the two most realistic to be produced by any animal).
For the last two options the dragon would need two seperate glands and I might have a solution how it could produce them without setting itself on fire internaly or poisen itself. Most hypergolics are non reactive with iron and some other metal oxids. So if the dragon is by biology able to, it could enrich the walls of its galnds or wherever it stores the chemicals in, with one of those and therefore form a protective layer (same for its mouth).
What I want to say with this somewhat rocketsience-ish theory is that if you would be able to hit both of the glands in an attack, like puncture with a speer, the chemicals would mostlikely react internaly and thereby kill it from the inside. However I would advise to run like hell after the attack because most hypergolic fires, and possible explosions, are known to form pretty nasty byproducts and to be more of a "furious" nature.
Nerdy little Extra:
Byproducts of a fire/explosion of chlorine trifuoride and (probably) the spit or blood of the dragon would most likely exist in a form of gas or mist as there is water in those that formswith ClF3 hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid. Which in turn makes the "normal" fire breath even more deadly and somewhat like a chemical weapon (you die from breathing it, even if you hide away from the flames like behind a rock).

That depends on time and place. The distinction between dragon and wyvern based on the number of limbs, first appeared in British heraldry in the 1600s.
Before that, 2-legged dragons were accepted, and everywhere else, they continued to be.
Historically, terms like dragon, wyvern, drake, wyrm... they were all just different names for the same creature. The distinction betweent them all is really more of a modern thing, all though they still seem to be used rather interchangeably.
Also don't forget the chinese depiction of dragons. In most cases they don't even have wings.

Nice Video; but you missed one of the most important weapons of a Dragon: It's intellect. Adult Dragon have up to 18 Intellegence, 15 Wisdom and 24 Charisma. It would be immensely difficult to trick them or outsmart them into a favourable fight. Their lairs (depending on their color) may be filled with traps and minions, have secret escape routes for the dragon and may be built with enough verticality such that the dragon can use it's flight advantage while trapping the assailant in an enclosed space.
Additional correction: green dragons are immune to poison damage or being poisoned. (At least that is the case in DnD lore)

Thing is, originally dragons were symbols of ultimate regional evil, with their every feature designed to convey how utterly insurmountable they (those evils) were.
Once people started literalizing and getting pedantic over all the little details found in artistic renditions and trying to liken them to visually similar animals (ignoring the entire original point of what they were supposed to be) people started taking on an enfeebled and unintelligent strawman that they'd call 'dragons'.
Even on the most base physical mechanical level, if we attribute them the originally intended durability that likened their hide and scales to iron armor (presumably plate with chainmail beneath, as that was the best thing available to compare anything to, back in the days of their conception), contrary to popular opinion: nobody's cutting that. Even having the luxury of aiming for between scales and all, not even stabbing with swords or spears actually penetrates through even cheap chainmail.
If we go the poison route against just the base classic physical profile, the best method of delivery may simply be sneaking up close to its face, and blowing a cloud of blinding glass dust or sawdust treated with Botulinum at its nose and - as you mentioned - immediately high-tailing it. Blood vessels in the nasal passages and cavity are quite absorbent, and the irritating nature of dust (or extra nasty shard variants of it) in them incites a reflexive physical response to try and get it out, which involves some rubbing - which would press more of the toxin into the bloodstream before the physical irritant could be removed.
Though if we're talking a fantasy setting where such beasts naturally exist, we commonly, again, tend to forget just what they are. In a world of magic, they are as long-lived as anything comes and generally sport intelligence a little bit above humans. Between their experience, smarts, and ample resources they'd have undoubtedly secured the absolute best magic in the world and prepared their lairs to be both functional fortresses against and impossible deathtraps for the merry band of veritable demigods that it'd take to even challenge them, complete with amenities to neutralize even the most devious of toxins and other tricks. Then again, given their intellect, it's infinitely more likely that someone in a fantasy setting would end up working with or for a (proper) dragon than ever trying to kill one to begin with.
... much like how one would sooner find themselves working for, with, or around a giant global corporation than single-handedly managing to take it down.
Regarding the origin of dragons you are overly generalizing as different cultures had different mythological significance to dragons ranging from revered divine beings to forces of destruction evil and calamity etc.
Some were even a mix of both such as the Babylonian goddess of creation Tiamat embodiment of primordial chaos the ocean alongside her mate Apsu created life and the first generation of gods whose descendants would later murder her mate leading her to go all out in vengeance and get slain but not before she created dragons to fulfill her revenge. It is particularly interesting among dragon myths since it seems to bridge the western dragons to their more revered eastern counterparts (i.e. linked to water, and thus life, considered divine and serpentine) Basically Tiamat and Apsu seem to have been more like eastern dragons with the western counterparts coming from Tiamat as she sought revenge. (Humans were created by the traitor gods who wanted something to rule over so dragons are naturally hostile and the Babylonian gods were all a holes.) Basically dragons were way more complicated than any one mythology gives.
Otherwise yeah the mythological traits dragons are given basically the best of everything imaginable isn't really biologically plausible as a natural creature since it was never originally intended to be in the first place Dragons were typically either gods or the ultimate evil and or enemy of mankind.

Hey, Kyle - Love this channel! Going back to your comment about not being able to cause the dragon to explode. I refer you back to Reign of Fire. There it appears that the dragon expels a pair of chemicals that burn when they mix, causing the "fire-breath". I suspect these hypergolic fluids would be stored in internal bladders. If you could pierce both of these bladders, the fluids would mix and cause the dragon to get crispy.

Hey Kyle,
If dragons were reptiles, it may help to explain why they're always depicted sleeping or resting and may also change the amount of calories they need. If a dragon were cold blooded they would need less calories because they're not applying energy to making body heat. Therefore they could apply some energy to making fire breathing chemicals and the rest to basic body function.
However, given the fact that there are no true flying reptiles, it would be more plausible to believe that a dragon was more closely related to birds, just like dinosaurs. Meaning it would be Luke-warm to warm blooded. Dragons (wyverns in this case because a true dragons body plan is unrealistic in vertebrates) in this case could also be looked at as proto-birds, possibly with early feathers and hollow bones.
Larger dragons would therefore have to have some kind of flight sack that filled with a lighter than air gas, making them both more likely to fly or glide, and less likely to break under their own weight. Harkening back to your how to beat a T-rex video, large animals take increased fall damage. This flight sack could also provide the needed fuel for fire breathing, however that would mean using the breath would then make the dragon more vulnerable if they missed. So here is what I was thinking.
What if, instead of a duel flight and fire breathing sack, the dragon instead had a chamber that took organic matter and fermented it into an alcohol, distilling it down to a highly flammable end product. Then, opening its mouth past a certain point would cause the chamber to compress, squirting out the fuel into an area containing multiple strike-points for an easily sparked, easily attained material. This would create the flamethrower-like effect we see in many movies, although in this case the flame would probably be less visible. I think this would possibly be a solution to the issue of fire breathing and flying. Two separate chambers for each function.
Also thinking about it, would the deep breath a dragon takes before breathing fire actually be to take in the oxygen to promote burning rather than to have air to breathe back out? Pushing flammable fuel into an environment with no oxygen like the carbon dioxide filled exhale of any vertebrate would be kind of pointless right?

Regarding whether dragons would be cold-blooded by virtue of being reptiles, birds and many non-avian dinosaurs have been warm-blooded despite belonging to the clade Sauropsida (the current official term for reptiles) like turtles, lizards, snakes, and crocodiles.
So by that definition, I think birds would technically qualify as flying reptiles along with the Pterosaurs, and a Dragon could be either cold-blooded or warm-blooded (assuming that it exists as a unique clade of Archosaurs, the family that encompasses Crocodilians, Pterosaurs, and Dinosaurs including birds).
@@markcobuzzi826 Sauropsida is a clade that includes reptiles and birds. It's at a higher level than those more specific classifications, therefore birds are not reptiles.
Dinosaurs have been argued to be mesothermic, exothermic, and endothermic. Last I checked, mesothermic seems to be the leader. I used cold blooded because of how dragons are typically depicted as big reptiles. And I used the dinosaur and bird analogy because dragons remind people of dinosaurs. I could also speculate that dragons could have been mesothermic because their wings could have acted as heat regulation devices. Spear them out and they cool down, pull them close they heat up.

To be fair... actually, would that actually work? I mean, you don't necessarily need to cut anything off to cut off the link from head to body, so would that work if a group managed to coordinate a sneak attack on all of the heads? Or, does it not matter if the head comes off for it to regenerate? Either way, it would be way more difficult every if it would work... and all of this is assuming that the creature can live in the first place without some jellyfish like nervous system, ei, doesn't have a brain.

Does a hydra have a brain in its heads? I don't think the available lore is explicit on the matter, but the fact people kept trying to cut heads off does suggest it was believed so.
But people in history believed plenty of stuff that was wrong.
A hydra could theoretically have a brain in its central body, with the "heads" acting more like bitey tentacles.
If we presume that each head does have its own brain, then we have to consider how the regeneration works, and if there are numerous species of hydra - after all, the lore varies on the nature of the regeneration.
If I were to hypothesise, I would say that when a head is sufficiently damaged, it would be common for the hydra to drop the entire head and neck from the body, thus allowing a potential plurality of heads (and necks) to regenerate from the wound.
In this situation, it would not matter if a head was decapitated or merely (functionally) destroyed. The hydra would simply drop the "limb" and regrow one or more new ones.

Even if a Hydra did not have individual brains in the individual heads, it still relies on what those heads' eyes see for coordination and sight. Meaning if it's blinded that you've significantly reduced its threat level.
At times like these, I recommend fire/napalm. Alternatively: go for the absurd and cut off heads of the Hydra so many times that you cause it to die from respiratory failure trying to supply blood to a bouquet of heads.
Hydra is technically a draconid, just like Heracles was technically a human. In practice, both were demigods, and, possibly, cousins.

Dragons are also notoriously intelligent. Which makes the fight even more difficult.
not all dragons are intelligent. some are just ungodly powerful beasts. For example, the most intelligent of white dragons in Dungeons and Dragons has the intellect of an average person. But for the most part you are right, and there are dragon out there with dazzling intellect.
And some can even can use magic. So killing dragons is not easy even with modern weaponry
In D&D, dragons were supposed to be top tier monsters for the adventurers to take on. Part of it is that dragons are supposed to be getting smarter as they age. They're supposed to be devious, cunning beasts, and not just another monster that does a "claw, claw, bite and then move on to breath weapon". And, to counter Rembanspellsong's comment, while intelligence does vary with dragon species, they are all sentient species with the dumbest of the bunch being at least as intelligent as humans. It's like of like saying that the slowest person of a group of people are still smarter than the average person for the US. Add in the armored hide, powerful physique, and their innate ability to use spells, and even a midlevel party might be in for a world of hurt against a dragon.
And then TSR/WotC thought, "Dragons aren't as OP as we'd like" and created monsters like beholders, illithids, aboliths, terrasks (Okay, they borrowed that from the French).

@Dcard Dcardian Maybe not, depends on whether flight speed is similar to the Jets. Iron Eagle showed that Jets have a hard time against much slower foes. They overshoot them before they can engage, especially if they can't get target lock. Additionally, Dragons were very good at defense. Heat seeking missiles would target, but flame breath can blow it up, or melt it.

What is necessary and what is unnecessary. We need to understand reality to change the world. To understand reality we must let go of desires, maybe in the buddhist sense, so not to have our desires to affect our observations. Letting go of desires leads to nihilism: in the grand scheme of things, survival itself is meaningless.
As an answer to nihilism, there is absurdism. Its not simply about being absurd against the face of reality, it is the simple logic that nihilism does you no good, no matter how you define good. So nihilism itself is the absurd ideology, and finding meaning in whatever is more useful, regardless of whether you believe in there being meaning to anything.
Necessity is very hard to define. A dragon would reason, it is necessary to attack people, since people will not get eaten voluntarily. A nihilist might say survival is not necessary. Its subjective.
In my world, I try to see the world of politics, beyond the petty powerstruggles and ideologies, into whats really happening in peoples hearts and minds. Is that necessary? Not really, but its who I am. Very few have the capability to do that, so the usefulness of what I do is potentially great. Thefore, as one part of my society, there is a necessity for me to do the job others cant.
Yet, by distancing myself emotionally, i deny myself the emotional strength to take action politically.

If lucky, you'll only lose one member of your party - maybe none, if your people are fighting at full HP (unlike certain others I could name...)

Great episode Kyle! Glad to hear our draconologist friend survived being eaten by the beast. A bit of input though. You said you didn’t want to use modern weapons because dragons usually appear in medieval settings, fair enough so let’s stick to medieval weaponry. But why not use ballistae? Or trebuchets? I lack the exact numbers but a heavy duty trebuchet can definitely fling a rock pretty fast. A 100Kg projectile can be sent flying some 200 meters (granted a BIG counterweight of some 6000Kg iirc) or a 50 ish Kg projectile for over 350 meters. Would you be able to hit a dragon with this (a challenge in its own I might add) it would most certainly deal a mighty blow to it and perhaps immobilising the beast enough to take it out. Ballistae with more narrow arrow heads designed to pierce armour would help in the case of incredibly thick scales. Neither of these are very portable though so you’d have to assume the dragon either comes to you or is stationary for great lengths of time. Depending on the legend though they just sort of hibernate in their lairs. I’m sure you considered this but didn’t bring it up because as always you went with... the way of the blade

this is my preferred option (with female dragons. it's never a good idea to string along anything with THAT many ways to kill you, and since I'm straight...). instead of risking your neck to kill a dragon, you risk your neck to get a flying, fire-breathing, army-rending girlfriend who's guaranteed to make sure that anything that DOES succeed in killing/seriously wounding you doesn't exist long enough to regret it.

In the first Panzer Dragoon game you face an Air battleship as your first boss which takes about a minute to beat. During that fight you fire 11 homing laser shots and about 100 smaller rifleshots. When calculating this I took into account that the ships armor would be equal to the Fletcher class destroyer’s hull thickness of ¾ inch of steel. So for the Dragon’s main homing laser I looked for the smallest navel gun that has the ability to sink a destroyer that came to the 3” naval gun which fires an 11 kilogram round with 37,249,000,000 joules of force. For the rifle I looked into the best flack gun as it can take out smaller aircraft type enemies in the game in 1 or 2 shots, that led me to the 88mm anti air guns used by Japan in ww2. Those guns had a force of 1,377,000 joules per shot. Calculated together for total force added would be 909,876,700,000 joules of combined force for all 111 shots fired. As a kicker Steel has a tensile strength of 40,000 ft lb of pressure which equals 54,231.99999999999 joules of force for every ft lb of tensile force. So realistically this Dragon and rider( whose name happen to be Kyle by the way) can take out a naval destroyer rather quickly. Also love the show and this is to get more people to get interested in Panzer Dragoon which has a remaster getting released this winter. Also dont mess with a dragon that can shoot lasers. Also this was done in one day with a paper towel as a writing surface.

Not to burst your bubble but, I would say supernerd but a supernerd wouldn't make the mistake of saying Joules of force not once but 3 times, as force is measured in Newtons and Joules is the unit of energy. Tensile force in ft lbs is incorrect. Tensile force is not measured in ft lbs that would be torque or a moment which is rotational "force" (lb/ft^2 is actually tensile pressure) which converted into the metric system would be Nm^-2 or Pa which is what guns shots are measured in because pressure shows how easily something will penetrate certain materials like flesh. To elaborate there is the ft lbs muzzle energy of a gun which equates to 1.3558 joules ft.lbs is an energy not a force.
We also measure gun shots in Joules because we can then divide by distance penetrated to find out force applied and thus pressure applied over area of the bullet tip. So the force a naval gun would hit with assuming it pierced an inch (with stopping power) into the dragon would be. Knowing pressure that the bullet applies means we can also then know exactly what this bullet can go through.

times this by 111 = 6947590909 Total Newtons of force if localized onto one spot.

In the anime Gate: they just shoot dragons with missiles, machineguns and artillery shells. That kills them pretty well

I just watched a video about black holes since we have ion propulsion engines and they gradually get faster and faster you could potentially surpass the speed of light so technically if you go fast enough you could go into a black hole and come back out.

Also, I thought of something else. Even though it's not typical dragon lore, it would have been interesting to think about the differences in tactics if you were fighting dragons more like the How to Train Your Dragon...dragons. Something like a Toothless that is much smaller, much faster on the ground, and has a different explosive "plasma" attack. Even the Terrible Terrors that are about the size of a house cat can still fly and breath fire, so punting it is out of the question. Anyway, once again, love the show as always.
Good point on dragons the size of house cats. Marvel comics have shown they are not pushovers for decades now in the form of Lockheed the Dragon, a small alien (yes he comes from outer space!) that followed Kitty Pryde back home to Earth. He has all the classic dragon features: fire-breathing, functioning wings, 4 legs, and tail. The only classic feature he lacks is size, his body is usually size of very large house cat like a Main Coon. He's no push over, scales are tough enough that its hard to hurt him and even energy attacks like the Wasp's sting don't phase (yes that word's intentional) him.... he even had Wasp on the run at one point.

In Dark Souls 3 Ringed City, a hell of a boss, that is a dragon, called Dark eater Midir, can super charge his flame breath. Now in game it's a form of dark magic, but could it be that it is actually fire getting so hot it becomes a concetrated beam of plasma? Love the show, keep teaching and entertaining

Hey Kyle, would'nt a better strategy have been to coat a lance in an LD50 substance, corner it in its lair, and then make a mounted charge?
A warhorse is around 900KG. Add in the weight of a mounted knight to be 80KG + armour and gear to be about 130, and then add barding onto the horse and we'll call the total mass of you and your mount at around 1130KG. Assuming the horse is heavily laden and not running at top speed which has been clocked at 90-ish km/hr and assuming 60, the total force potential is around 157356.2 Newtons-ish, and then if you couch a lance and exert all that force onto a small point. Even IF that doesn't immediately kill the dragon, the internal trauma would be enough to at least stun the beast to allow the LD50 substance to do its work! Plus, you've got a horse to make your withdrawal on! Also, plus plus, you've now got a horse! And horses are majestic.
while the potential energy is high, the dragons flame breath and your total lack of a stealthy approach means your horse will be flame roasted and the energy will be expended as the corpse of you and the horse slide along the ground and maybe bump into the dragon. you won't live long enough to aim the lance and make contact.

Shingeki no Bahamut; sadly anything sort of a nuke isn't going to do anything. That said, I do always say it depends on the setting, and Gate is one of the few settings I know of where a dragon and firearms are in the same universe. Though in many other settings, anything short of a rpg doesn't even do damage, and the rpg doesn't blow limbs off, you'd need something bigger. Still I kinda wished Gate had another season, that can be said of most anime however.

@@Mongward technically, the shepherd/dog analogy doesnt really work because whenever wyverns and dragons exist in the same setting, wyverns are their own seperate species of animal. wyverns arent dragons like shepherds are dogs. wyverns are wyverns and dragons are dragons. a more fitting analogy would be to say that people who call wyverns "dragons" in a setting where actual 4 legged dragons dont exist is like creating a setting where only dogs exist, but not cats, but then calling the dogs "cats".
