    Thank you so much for watching! I hope that everyone who celebrates had a wonderful holiday, and has a happy New Year. This video was a ton of fun (obviously) -- also the last main episode of our first year as a channel! I CANNOT WAIT to show you all the stuff we have coming up in 2019. Just finished a giant project at the end of this month for early next year. It's going to be awesome. -- kH

      but how is it that the more energy you use to "lift" it, the more mass is get? Comics said gravitons, but how about m=E/c² ?
      How about strong fundamental forces, maybe a gluon field from trying to separate quark/anti-quark? The hammer could have anti-quark properties..but it's too quantum now, and I dont know how to calculate that. I'll just say that the hammer is the manifestation of m=E/c²,...or maybe Newton's 3rd law

    Actually, my theory has always been that mass has nothing to do with it. I mean, it doesn't actually seem to grow more massive - in that one scene in Age of Ultron, that would probably have broken the table Thor placed the hammer on, and when he uses it to hold the Hulk down, you would expect something that heavy to push Hulk into the ground, dent the floor, etc.
    What we do know is that Mjolnir can legit fly, even in space, changing direction as needed. That pretty much means it can project some sort of invisible propulsive force. So I've always assumed that when someone unworthy tries to lift it, Mjolnir simply projects a force in the opposite direction which cancels out the force of the one trying to move it. This would make the hammer seem impossibly heavy without changing its mass, so no broken tables or the hammer sinking into the ground.
    This would also mean it could resist being moved in space since it would be sorta like trying to push a spaceship while it's flying towards you with exactly the same amount of force you are applying to it, if that makes sense.

      It’s a mass thing because the canon material says it is. But gravity itself is usually a mass thing (though it can be an acceleration thing let’s not even try that okay?). It being a gravity thing would literally make the zero gravity/weightless argument in the comics not make sense. It being a kinetic force thing (acceleration okay we can talk about it) would also work but kinetic force and kinetic energy can be attributed to mass and gravity. The problem with this is that kinetic force is absolute. It could in theory make its kinetic force 0 at any time despite weight by making its potential energy go up (some weird conversions where as you push it transfers all that force into potential energy instead of attributing it to kinetic energy) or it could make its net velocity 0 by using kinetic force equal to the force put upon it the literal opposite direction. Both of these would make the example where characters not worthy moved it in certain area (ie. space) not make sense.

      Well if you want to get all **technical** about it then:
      Mjolnir can only be moved (wielded) by someone worthy because, if anyone else tried to, it says to the surrounding universe "Nope, not happening" and the universe complies and the hammer doesn't move.
      's basic science, really.

    Kyle, canonically the hammer's general mass is about 42 lbs. Thor weighs about 600 lbs.
    When Thor flies he's actually throwing his hammer with enough force to carry himself along for the ride.
    How fast does Thor have to throw the hammer, or how much strength is required to throw the hammer to move Thor 1 KM at a decent speed?

    • @emmettobrian1874
      @emmettobrian1874 5 років тому +2

      It doesn't have to be that massive. So for one, if the hammer flight is powered by Thor's arm (possibly not since it can move on it's own) and the thing that propels him is the hammer's mass the hammer couldn't move Thor any faster than he could swing the hammer. That's not what you asked, but it's related. Thor doesn't really swing it at superhuman speed. Not that he couldn't, he just doesn't seem to. So say he's swinging it at a pro baseball pitcher's speed. That tops out at around 160 Km/h but probably a bit faster because the handle would act like a longer arm. A sling can hurl a stone at 220 Km/h so that might be a better gauge. For instance if the hammer just made itself as massive as Thor (270 Kg) the energy of the throw would be split between the hammer and Thor's momentum and both go flying off at 110 Km/h. The thing is that a lot of the time, the hammer's flight path is pretty flat so it would have to be much more massive than Thor to pull off something like that. Still, if it became ten times more massive (2700 Kg) it wouldn't be that heavy compared to how heavy it would have to become so that the Hulk couldn't lift it.

    • @Saimeren
      @Saimeren 5 років тому +3

      @@emmettobrian1874 I'm not talking about changing the mass of the hammer though. That's not how it works in the canon media. That's how Kyle wants it to work, but that doesn't mean it's how it works. I want to know how fast he would have to throw a 42lbs hammer to lift himself off the ground and get hurled a kilometer down the road.
      Throwing yourself is the issue. How much energy would Thor have to put into an object that light (comparatively) to be able to move himself.
      Edit: Hammer is 42 lbs, not KG. My mistake.

      @@Saimeren that equations actually alot simpler than you think. As it essentially comes down to him not throwing the hammer, it's him throwing himself, just with the hammer in front. Basically you need to decide some things in advance tho, how much does Thor weigh, is he travelling in a straight line, or an arch with gravity, and how fast he is travelling the 1km also does he need to stop when he gets there, either via landing, air resistance or just gravity slowing him to a stop (or a combination of the 3).
      Oh almost forget, you also need the weight and length of his arm, and possibly his shoulder height. Ok so the maths not as simple as I hoped, but it's doable. First figure out the force required to travel the distance in your chosen flight, that's the energy required from the throw, now using more math figure out how fast his throw would need to be so that when his arm stopped moving it would have the appropriate velocity to deliver the force in the direction needed.
      I am not doing that math.

    Alternate Theory:
    Mjolnir was (as Odin told Thor) meant to be a focus for his lightning abilities. Thus, Mjolnir is some sort of mega conductor for EM forces. Therefore, it's all done with magnets. So, just as epic but done differently, Mjolnir does not move/not-move by messing with their own mass/gravity, but via hyper refined super powerful mag-lev. (This is one plausible explanation why Mjolnir stuck to the deck of the helecarrier when Hulk tried to lift it, without causing the ship to plummet.)
    One the other hand, a trillion kg Mjolnir in space means that you could stand on it.

Which both makes more sense, And prevents objects that it is placed upon while it is trying to be lifted, (i.e. the coffee table in Starks living room among many others), from being crushed under it's new mass. 5:14 that is so awesome, Odinson! XD Anyway, you forgot about relativity. You can hold on to the handle of Thor's hammer in space, and in trying to lift it, the forces you apply to the hammer through your arm and muscles would have an equal and opposite reaction on your body, repositioning yourself in such a way that if you look at yourself from a different angle, you are indeed lifting it, or, if you use yourself as a point of reference, instead of you moving yourself down trying to lift the hammer, you are effectively moving the hammer above you. I mean... assuming the gravitational pull of the massive hammer doesn't spaghettify you before you even get close to it. Actually... if you tried to lift Mjolnir in an indestructible planet and you were strong enough, would you push the planet down instead of lifting up the hammer, kinda like Chuck Norris does every time he does a push up, or should I say, "push down"?

    I always thought of Mjolnir as a precision instrument, capable of regulating gravitational effects on itself, whether increasing or decreasing it, and sometimes in different ways simultaneously that should be mutually exclusive. This effect was probably extended to the wielder as well, allowing Thor to fly. This ability would account for not only its ability to be "immovable" but the non-parabolic flight it often has at sub-ballistic speed.
    A great example of this is at the beginning of Ragnarok when Thor fights Surtur's demons and Mjolnir "orbits" Thor while he's using his fists. The hammer describes an orbit around Thor, stays consistently about four feet off the ground(defying the planet's gravity which should pull it downward in a second or so) yet is pretty much irresistible to anything it encounters (implying a significant mass/force) yet is only moving at about the speed of a football thrown by a quarterback, if that. We're observing different effects in this single shot that have Mjolnir seem both very light and very heavy at the same time.
    For all we know, Uru is actually very light, and every time it impacts a target it optimizes gravity's effect to make it hit exactly as Thor intends. After all, Vision did comment how "perfectly balanced" it was, not to mention Thor casually hanging it on Darcy's coat rack towards the end of Dark World.

    I actually got thinking about this one the minute you announced it in your last Footnotes episode! I anticipated a similar problem to what you briefly discussed at 4:48. As almost an immediate reaction to the question, I realized that the hammer would increase its mass until it stuck to you like a magnet, because plot twist: you are a surface. At this point, you'd better stop bugging the hammer or really bad things are going to happen.
    If, for example, Mjolnir keeps increasing its mass past a certain point, its surface gravity will exert 409 g, my estimation of the surface gravity needed to break the strongest bone in your body: the femur. This is thanks to a figure you shared in your superhero landing episode. Mjolnir would break every bone in your body! If it gained even more weight all of your bones would dissolve under its gravity, transforming you into a disgusting, evenly dispersed tiny ocean of squishyness burying a magic hammer lifelessly floating through space forever.
    Never mess with the hammer.

    What if the hammer does not actually change its mass but rather it uses some form of hypnotic suggestion to make those trying to lift it think that it is heavy (or unliftable) but actually they're barely putting any force into trying to pick it up. Think a mime pushing against a balloon. It is a magic hammer after all.

    • @ToabyToastbrot
      @ToabyToastbrot 5 років тому

    • @McDDcM
      @McDDcM 5 років тому +1

      That's the point, it's not Thor planting the suggestion but the hammer itself. If the hammer is the one using some form of hypnotic suggestion then it wouldn't matter if the person knew of its properties or not. Also, the Quicksilver moment from Age of Ultron could still be explained by this; the hammer planted the suggestion when Quicksilver touched it so he actually put no effort into trying to move it himself and was therefore pulled by its momentum from Thor's throw. He did try catch a god's hammer mid-flight, he's going to be affected by its momentum if he's not putting in a lot of effort to stop it.

    • @ToabyToastbrot
      @ToabyToastbrot 5 років тому

      @@McDDcM Not saying the idea isn't f***ing awsome, but when he holds on to the hammer he couldn't be pulled that far with just the hammers momentum (his mass is to big).

    • @McDDcM
      @McDDcM 5 років тому

      Thanks for liking my theory. To try and cover the Quicksilver thing, we could consider that the hammer is made of Uru (so its mass may be much larger than an earth made hammer of similar dimensions) and it was thrown by a god (who can take a punch from the Hulk) so would be travelling with a lot of force behind it. Therefore, Quicksilver lazily (due to the hypnotic suggestion) trying to catch it would still result in him being pulled off his feet by the hammer. I’m picturing him basically trying to stop something mid-flight that’s the weight of a small car but the size of a hammer travelling at say 47m/s (this is based on the fastest recorded baseball pitch). I think he would still be pulled off his feet, especially if we consider that Mjolnir implants the suggestion of not actually putting in your full strength. On the other hand, Quicksilver was travelling at superhuman speed at he time he tried to catch it so the inherent strength and momentum he would have while travelling at such speeds might negate the velocity of the hammer despite it being thrown by Thor and being heavier than expected.

Would the hammer increase its mass to be greater than the earth and pull the earth to it. if a person is holding the hammer and earth begins to pull on both the hammer and individual does it then becomes the dominant force. would that then make the earth worthy? Your thoughts?

    • @dowfreak7
      @dowfreak7 5 років тому

      If we go with just the basic "counter-acts force by making itself heavier", then it'd only ever need to be heavy enough to out-do the one trying to lift/move it.
      So unless we're talking super-mega-hulk or whatever, I don't think it'd need to become terribly heavy.

    • @aurigo_tech
      @aurigo_tech 5 років тому

      Well I would think that the person grabing Mjölnir would move along with it and thus only hold onto it but not wield it (=being able to change its direction). Also the Hammer is affected by gravity in a normal way, meaning it gets attracted. So, in a way, ANY gravitational source could move the Hammer. One could argue though if attraction by gravity is "moving" at all, as gravity bends spacetime and an object is only following that path of spacetime curvature and gravity is only a kind of "pseudo force" in that model of thought.

What I’m referring to is Thor #132 where they 1st introduced Ego the Living Planet. They never specified on if Ego could hold Thor’s hammer, he is a planet so does resting the hammer on egos surface count as lifting it? If so then we discovered that the hammer has a limit to how much mass it can have or Ego is worthy or planets are excluded from the hammer’s abilities or the hammer is resting on his surface is because the hammer has greater mass and Ego is resting on the hammer’s surface.

I mean possibly the emiting of gravitons could be using gravity to help you swing it despite it always weighing that amount, and make it seem like it weighs less than it does, but then that'd be a lot more powerful than just lightning, as thor's hammer could pull on any part of the universe to move itself and that object in any way. When it returns to thor it wouldn't be pulling on thor as that would rip thor apart into a goo, but then thor should be able to do that to his enemies. Just imagine the power Thor could weild, being able to use his hammer as a tractor beam, and he wouldn't shoot off as the hammer would still be as massive as it is.

    I hate to be "that guy" but technically the hammer is always moving. The earth and Galaxy are always spinning. The correct terminology is unwieldable.

      I understand why Kal El can Lift thors Hammer because mjorlnir And the eye of odin sees what kal-el is trying to do And well We could see that happen And After seeing How hurt he was trying to kill someone like general Zod And I Think the eye of odin understand why he doesn't want to kill Can I think there might be a chance where he can lift It But however If he Can't Then that means there must be other requirements that he needs to work on.😇✊🤘

    Hey Kyle, another awesome episode, quick question concerning your mention of if thors hammer made itself more massive it would pull you to it. If it were to become massive like that of a neutron star, would its gravitational pull on you towards it be so great that if you collided with it, it could possibly create a black hole?

    I'd actually love a scene where Hulk tries to lift it again, and keeps pulling harder and harder buying his legs in the ground and nearby the avengers scream at him to stop, but his rage has him focused on finally beating this stupid hammer... and Black Widow is trying to get close to calm him down and her hair starts to float toward the hammer, along with the dust, air, and debris around all slowly rolling and drifting towards the hammer... it's ever increasing mass slowly overcoming the local gravity of earth.. She gets closer and looks like she's walking downhill now.. she slips and starts sliding toward the hammer... being pulled to them... as Hulk screams and yells and pulls at the hammer... she yells out to him "Bruce! STOP! Look what you're doing!" He looks at her struggling on the ground sliding toward the hammer, dirt and debris piled up around it, air swirling toward them, a nearby tree, branches bending toward the hammer, leaves falling the wrong way, straight toward is hands... this potentially catastrophic event triggers Banners scientific mind and he stops...
    The tree bends back, the air calms Natasha flops down, and everything settles ...
    Hulk just looks around and goes... "Stupid hammer... Hulk don't need hammer anyway!" and he walks away.
    Natasha looks over at Tony, and Cap... Tony recognizes the potential chaos they averted, Cap doesn't understand why but he knows that could've been bad...
    Who knows... maybe they might need _bad_ sometime soon ;]
    Maybe sometime later, in space, the Avengers ship is destroyed, they start to float away in space and maybe Hulk is near Doc Strange or Wong... Hulk, (now intelligent with Banners mind) has an idea, He asks Thor to throw his hammer at him, Wong on his back makes a magic platform for the hammer to land on, and Banner grabs the hammer and begins to pull... harder and harder... Wong starts to sweat... his platform struggles under the power of Hulks massively powerful feet! Threatening to shatter this magic platform Banner pulls harder and harder on the hammer... First, Cap, being closest starts to slowly stop drifting away... Banner struggles, grits his teeth and looks tired.. Wong now sweating hard, looking very tired as well... Falcon, unconscious is getting further away! Cap yells, "BANNER! C'MON! PULL HARDER PAL! You can do this! We need you!" Cap starts slowly drifting toward Banner, but Banner has reached his limit! He just isn't as angry as the big guy..
    cut to an inner monologue...
    In a vast dark open space, with a dull glowing green light all around... Banner sees Hulk sitting, angry.. just staring through some sort of portal, representing Hulk/Banners eyes, watching life happen... listening to Cap, as an echo all around "Banner! Please! We need you! We need the Hulk! You can do this!" Seeing Natasha "Come on big guy! We know you can do this! You're the only one who can!"
    As banner approaches, and puts his hand on his massive shoulder, Hulk flinches and snaps his head around.. "Go away!" Swats Banner and he dissolves like smoke.. Banner reappears in front of him "No. They need you. You see what's happening. You don't want to lose them. Lose _her._ Do you?" Hulk growls "This what you wanted. Now you control both! You got rid of Hulk. You only want Hulk when in trouble! Only when in trouble! From now on.. you solve. Now you strong! Smart, _and_ strong. Now Hulk... nothing. Just... WATCH! JUST WATCH! ONLY WATCH! NEVER AM!" as he bursts up, swatting and smashing and destroying the Banner illusion over and over..
    Banner says "I only took control to show people what everyone already knew, what _they_ already knew. Hulk is a hero. You are. You just aren't good at showing it. All those times you saved everyone. That was _YOU!_ Not me. Hulk. It takes true strength to be a hero. More strength than I have. So, Hulk. Be a hero. Be the strongest there is, prove our friends right for believing in you."
    Cap getting closer to Hulk now, still calling out to him on comms, sees Wong struggling to keep his platform together.. he sees Hulk look over, a slight smile comes across his big green face and he looks down at the hammer, eyes now glowing green, muscles rippling... *"STUPID HAMMMEEER! HULK. IS. STRONGEST THERE IS! GWRAAAAAHGGGGG"* He pulls hard, causing cracks to form in the glowing platform, Wong now past his limit, looks as though he was punched in the gut! "Hurry Hulk! I cannot do this forever! We must... hurry!"
    Hulk pulls harder and harder and Cap picks up speed and lands on Hulks back. "Great job! Keep up the good work pal! I knew you could do it!"
    One by one the Avengers float toward Hulk and are all together safe, the injured and unconscious ones now safe and Hulk and Wong can finally relax.
    Thor grabs the hammer, he and Hulk lock hands and with a quick spin of the hammer the Avengers are off and flying.
    (My excuse is that Thor can only fly in long straight lines, and can't control direction well enough in space.. he couldn't gather them up.. whatever. It's just a cool scene I thought up. Whatever. Haha)
