I feel like you're treating Kril like a blank slate, someone like the hero from Dark Souls, someone to project your ideals and personality onto. But he's not. At the end of the day, he's not a hero out to save the world, or some monster hunter hellbent on taking out all evil. He's just....a guy. A scared, tired guy who just wants to go home. Thrust into a world he never even wanted to be in because he was scared of it, and...he's right, the ocean is fucking terrifying! He feels more like a person than a video game character, with multiple motives, and some having more importance than most. Firth, I feel, is the same way. He's not a good man, wanting to save the world, and he's not a bad man, wanting to doom it. He's just...a guy. A capitalist. While he may have disagreed with Roland's methods, his IDEALS are still intact. His bottom line is, of course, money. It always was. So naturally, he'd go for a balance between making the most money and helping rid the ocean of pollution, thinking of helping people in the long term, but getting richer in the short term. It makes him feel more like a person and less like a archetypical villain. Ever hear the phrase "Anger makes you stupid"? That's what the ending of the game feels like. As the game continues, Kril's anger toward the ocean and it's people for unwillingly polluting it builds up slowly, though he doesn't show it, as his main motivation is, again, getting his heccin house back. When at his lowest point, deep within the trench, his resolve begins to crack and he reveals his true feelings for the people he traveled with. Likely not showing them earlier because he planned to leave once he got his shell. And the rage finally reaches a boiling point and is all he can think about when he gains the Whorl. To him, at that *EXACT MOMENT*, the only thing he cared about, was to beat the everliving SHIT out of that traitor. At that moment, he could not see the trash island, or the dying Chitan (who never actually died, btw, she survives in the ending slideshow), or even his own shell. All he saw was Firth, and how he needed an outlet for all the pent up stress and anger. Its only AFTERWARDS that he sees the result of the anger, and now that it's all petered out, he gains a new perspective, and decides to stay and help. Because Kril is not a hero. He never was meant to be. He's just a person. This world is full of people. Love the video, though! Liked the music choices too!
@DoctorTex Great analysis! You sum up the characters really well and highlight I think exactly what the devs were going for! I think what bothers me most is how the characters are portrayed to come to this finale. the outcome is fine at the end of the day but the dialogue just feels a little too forced and phony for me. The characters come off as dumb which leads to a feeling of unrealistic characters where an actual person couldn't possibly be so oblivious and ignorant and it makes the outcome unsatisfying bc instead of the like "the struggle was hopeless" vibe that they were going for it's like the characters had so many things to learn from over the course of the story and just ignored all of it so it's their own fault. Which again could be linked to how humans treat the problem of trash pollution but the way it's done is frustrating and sours the actual messages that could've been learned from the story
@@dancorona yes but if krill is just a guy in the real world what is one guy meant to do stop pollution all by himself while everyone else just watch because if you or i try by are self we can't do anything at the end of the day
Exactly he gives up his shell to someone in need in the end and sets out he realizes that he can make some kind of difference if even a minor one he grows from his experience and not in some extraordinary way but in a way that's believable for an average person he's still trying to help out after learning from his adventure
I don’t know if you will read this, but Krill never fell off for me, only going high the more I thought about him. For context, I’m 20 turning 21, I live with my parents and younger sister who goes to college on our family’s farm. I seldom leave the property unless I have to. A part of me does want to change and get out of my comfort zone, but that is easier said than done. Krill represents shut-ins who stopped caring about the outside world. That's why the more I think about the ending the more I respect it. Problems can’t be magicked away and only you can decide to be the hero that inspires others.
My opinions on the representation of the other characters Nemma - the average good person who tries to help others but overall doesn't have the power to fix the problem Konche - the scientific community that has the knowledge to fix the problem but is focused on its own goals to do so. Firth - Rich/Famous people who say they want to help but ultimately not fixing the problem. Chitan - people who want to help but only show violence and aggression to those who they perceive as the problem and not fixing the problem itself. At least she changes at the end for the better Praya Dubai - same as Chitan but has the power to help, but again only shows violence and aggression and accomplishes nothing Roland - greedy businessmen who only care about themselves and their profits. Nothing new Inkerton - the people who don’t think can do anything meaningful despite being incredibly skilled and reinforces it with the people and places around them.
I just started Another Crab's Treasure, currently at the Expired Grove. I guess I could consider myself a hermit. I am 25, yet I still live with my parents. I am going to college, but I don't have a strong desire to go to the outside world and live on my own as I still don't have any outside world experience.

The dlc should be called shadow of the birds three and the final boss should be a trio of seagulls stuck together that coughs up the gunk like a dragon's fire
We see Chitan in the game's ending cutscenes. I believe Kril did go back to help get them healed back up and they help fight polluted crabs with him in the sands between. I feel like that should at least lighten things up a little bit even after all the other wasted opportunities. In this I see more a message about sometimes we just have to roll with what life throws at us and what consequences we have to learn from after we make mistakes.
I think you're being a bit too hard of Kril. He's not a perfect hero and that's okay. He's not "YOU". Also, Chitan's not dead. Kril went back for her after retrieving his shell, which you would know if you had been paying closer attention during the final cutscene instead of being angry at everything. Honestly, with all your ranting, you sound just like the Praya Dubia.🐚🦞
Carcino comes from the greek world karkinos that means both crab and cancer, because in the old days people tought that cancer was caused by crab-like parasites
you missed the point entirely. the point is to be unsatisfying bc you are krill! krill has no conviction bc neither do most people about climate change. his motivation is to "go back to the good old days" and at the very end when it's already too late is when he decides to act.
Except it's not too late bc he literally gets the perfect whorl after defeating Firth, and makes quite possibly the worst decision ever by breaking the only thing that could have redeemed his whole character after he had already started changing for the better
@dancorona right I knew I forgot to address something. the perfect worl is supposed to represent power. Who ever holds the true power can make change. Problem is the power only ever gets held by people who misuse it for their own gain, don't know how to, or end up making a personal decition that affects everyone. krill is the last one, he was so overcome with emotion and power that he made things worse. again krill is and never has been the hero he is both us and someone we hope not to be. even at the end he's still not doing things for others he's trying to find himself through helping others.
@jonathanhargrove1057 yeah in that sense I agree, I think it's just written poorly where the characters make it blatantly obvious to Kril and he's just dumb, it could've been done in a more clever and meaningful way where instead it makes it just frustrating
Clicked on this video out of curiosity when it was recommended. Was confused by what this 'Major problem' was, and then you finally started to talk about it. And honestly? I just don't see it. And I think the fact that I haven't heard any other video mention the plot or characterization as flaws, it honestly just feels like you missed the point. Firth's plan doesn't make sense and is illogical because he doesn't know what he's talking about when he thinks he does. He literally saw Rolland as a role model and flat out said that he feels weird about caring about how poorly the workers have been treated in some optional dialogue. He doesn't just feel bad, it's WEIRD to him that he feels bad. He clearly has some kind of disconnect between reality and what he thinks is right. He thinks the short-term economic boom he plans to create will be enough to solve the long-term issue, but it won't, because he doesn't actually care, or at least 'thinks' he cares. He mainly just wants to act like he's better than Rolland, which comes with treating people better, even though he doesn't actually know HOW to do that. This is showcased clear as day when he refuses to give up the Whorl for even a second to help save one life, instead more concerned about 'thinking big.' Making him literally just flat "MUAHAHA I AM EVIL AND WILL POLLUTE FOR MONEY' is just generic environmental bad guy nonsense seen a million times and would actively detract from the story. That's literally was Rolland was and he got an unceremonious death because that's what he deserved. Corporations don't do bad stuff because they're evil. They do bad stuff because they just don't care, and often time will pretend to care for their public image, which is literally was Firth is doing. He is portraying himself as the good guy to Kril so Kril will take his side. The fact that you take his words at face value without looking deeper is literally what corporations want, so that you support them without questioning their real intentions. And no, you shouldn't be able to choose an ending. Kril is his own character. The entire point is that he spends the whole game trying to get back to his complacent, lonely life, because that's what he's used to. That's what his shell represents. Complacency. He does everything in this game for the chance to go back to NOT doing everything he's doing in the game. He is APATHETIC to everything and everyone else, and only wants his old life back. His character is literally about being AGAINST character growth and change. And just when he starts caring about other things, like Konche and almost Chiten (because she didn't die and I don't know how you forgot that when you showed slides of her alive in the end), the world continues to take these things away from him. Kril flat out says at his lowest point that he DOESN'T like the world. It's cruel and scary. It's why he wants his safe, stable shell back. So, when he thinks he only has one last change to save someone he cares about, only to have that ripped away by someone who REFUSES to listen to what he cares about, he gives into the anger Praya Dubia talked about, lashing out and screaming in rage at Firth for basically embodying everything about the world that he hates. That's why Praya Dubia is presented as evil. She is rage without solution, which is why Kril did what he did in that moment. I also have no clue why you ragged on Kril giving away his shell. THAT'S THE CHARACTER GROWTH. He finally gives up his safe, sheltered life, in order to help SOMEONE ELSE. And him going around, traveling and what is literally shown of him PROTECTING others from the continued gunk'd enemies. If he settled down with Nemma, that would've been Kril basically resigning again to a life of complacency. But he doesn't. He decides to see the world, and help those he meets along the way. I literally don't get how you see that and not think Kril grew as a character. I also think showing the areas as 'lush with life' afterwards would've actually cheapened the message. There's tons of environmental media that acts as though beating the big bad evil corporations and pollution will instantly heal nature. It won't. It's a slow, arduous process to undo what's been done to the planet, and treating it like it's easy does not help the message. You're more than welcome to be unsatisfied with the ending, but it feels like you just.... Ignored what ACTUALLY happened in the ending, refused to look deeper than the surface level, and called it shit writing. Which is why I had to write all this out even for how old this video is. Calling the writing bad just because it didn't do what YOU wanted, even though everything within is actually completely sound and thematically appropriate, is very shallow and rude to the writers of this game.
By expecting to be the ultimate hero and save the day, youre already setting yourself up for disappointment when it comes to Aggro Crabs style of story telling. Its likely you wouldnt really enjoy their last games story either. They dont do happy endings. Thats not the point of their games. This ending is one of the most satisfying ive ever seen in a video game personally, and has stuck with me for months. Firth's motivations are very consistent imo. Hes trying to have his cake and eat it too. Hes not supposed to be unlikable or evil. He is a representation of people who procure power they dont deserve, whil kril is someone who works for his strength. Theres a lot more i can say. Its upsetting you didnt see it the same way i did, but we each have our own opinions and i still get where youre coming from.
just want to say the thimble is OP. the umami power is to let you not take damage for 3 hits, but it lasts WAY longer than 3 hits. do with this information what you will.
Grovekeeper Tapoda isnt a lobster. Hes a mantis shrimp. They have a punch that superheats water around the impact. And the" jellyfish" boss shes a siphonophore a collection of creatures that form an animal colony Good vid btw
I don’t see the plot holes or mischaracterization you complain about in the video I feel like you’re trying to seek out a happy ending where there is none and everything you criticize is just the reality of the situation when it comes to pollution and climate change since they have some intersection in the theming of the story. You critique Kril’s characterization when it’s spelled out right in the beginning There are predators, scavengers and those who just want to be left alone. People like Krill exist. Even knowing the gravity of the situation, it doesn’t take priority over their comfortability or desire to “keep things the same” Firth’s plan with the shell makes sense because it amplifies his motivation which is still greed. It just takes it to its forgone conclusion that his fiscal ambition combined with that level of power would spell disaster in the name of profit basically evolving his greed from entrepreneur to that of like a CEO the ending is frustrating because it’s the same as real life. Even with all of the knowledge of our harm to the environment. Most of us will just carry on as normal because there’s only so much that we can do as individuals. Most people are not the heroes nor the villains of their stories. They’re just the protagonist of their own individual tales TL:DR Kril just wants to grill Capitalism bad We’re all fucked unless we can start to see further than our own eyes Realistic ending feels bad in crab souls game
For me people don’t realize that Krill wasn’t really in the wrong that much at the end (in terms of the treasure plotline), little bro was fighting off zombie crabs, Massive Underwater Horrors and such WHILE dealing with everyone’s bs for the first time since he’s always be isolated up to this point like none of the characters genuinely know what he had to deal with and hit him with the “we all have our own problems kid” Obviously I’m not justifying him being reckless and getting everyone almost killed but you might get the idea Idk the ending irked me but that doesn’t ruin the game imo It’s decent
When I was fighting camtscha I got pushed under his old shell and the arena where I pulled him down and pulled myself to him until I staggered him and did the big stab before we both fell into the abyss, still won tho
I like to torture myself cause I did the shell splitter first before doing anything else, and same goes for Pagarus, like literally I sat fought Pagarus 30 times before beating him, I was also a parry crab
I accidentally fought the sludge roller by mistake thinking he was mandatory Edit: Just wanted to comment on some things also 1: I was wondering if you could beat the Sand Between boss and sequence break, and I was right. 2: Carcinia is straight up based off Anor Londo, in one of the developement shorts the devs straight said "We imported Anor Lando into the game" it was obviously a joke since people were complaining about it being too similar to the Souls series and what not but yeah Carcinia, the Bleached City is based off Anor Lando to a big degree
i think you kind of get it with how you think behind the character writing with him not really caring i always interpreted as there is nothing that can be done about it no matter how much someone fights and even if they think they have won that fight new corruption and pollution will always follow and you need to do your best just to make even one life better because the bigger issues no matter how much you ever fight can never be fixed and people only ever look out for themselves in the end
If you're up for another colorful, creative, solid (semi) Soulslike with a level of writing, voice acting, characters and music that many may find surprising, i can warmly recommend Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. It's a prequel to the Zeno Clash series. All things considered, the actual story is quite small scale. There's not really many grandiose monsters as such, but there is a fascinating world full of freaks, monsters, and proper history to sink one's teeth into.
1:10:30 I always understood it as firth/corporations are always using the idea of environmentalism to expand their operations, like how coffee labeled free trade isn’t always produced in “free trade” guidelines and has become a consumer label at this point, firth just uses the notion of eventually using less trash so that people don’t get mad / accept and tolerate what he is doing
I also agree with you, I am unsatisfied by the ending of the game but by the end I was fuckin Ballin my eyes out😅. I was sincerely crying cause even tho I was unsatisfied with the ending, this game was so shucking good. It has something the games nowadays sometimes lack, it has passion, even with it's flaws you can feel the tangible passion behind this. I love this game man, hope it wins some awards this year. (Tho I doubt it'll win anything at TGA cause...well it's a smaller game.)
The UA-cam algorithm doing you a disservice man, maybe try posting your videos on a few Reddit pages (if they’re related to the video obviously). I’ll like the video as well tho, you’re so underrated it’s actually nuts
I think you kinda don’t get Firth a little bit, especially his plan. To me Firth was always just using Kril and the others to get treasure because he idolizes Roland and thinks that’s the best way. I’ve always kinda seen Firth as Kril if he grew up under the ocean rather than the tide pool and his plan to sink trash island is because he still wants to get rich. He doesn’t actually care about the people he just wants the fame and admiration of others
To me, the story was really good, especially going into the Unfathom, but then, after literally the best part of the whole story and game, the story just crumbles into pieces. It's a shame really.
I think that the point the developers were trying to make is that trash can’t be gotten rid of, because of our actions or something. I feel like it could’ve been done better though. Like, you can have the crab fail, but not because he’s dumb. Make him fail because of a hopeless fight, there was nothing he could’ve done instead :P it’d be funny I love your editing style also
Damn... That ending sucks... But this was a pretty good video, probably not gonna play Another Crab's Treasure because I have anger issues and don't want to break my TV (Plus I'm bad at souls games). I hope you continue to make amazing videos and have a great life.
@dancorona I'm hinting at the fact that prawnathan IS the loan shark, and there's evidence to support this that after you meet him you find the grabby toy behind the pawn shop
@sunburst2740 I know, I was asking if it was satire bc it's obviously the case that the loan shark and prawnathan are the exact same person it's confirmed to us in prawnathans first few lines of dialogue

I just 'beat' pagrus by fighting him and he just ...fell off a cliff before I even knew what happened. Obtained all his delicious microplastics.
It took me too long to realize inkerton was a Pinkerton pun.
just want to say the thimble is OP. the umami power is to let you not take damage for 3 hits, but it lasts WAY longer than 3 hits. do with this information what you will.
Grovekeeper Tapoda isnt a lobster. Hes a mantis shrimp. They have a punch that superheats water around the impact.
And the" jellyfish" boss shes a siphonophore a collection of creatures that form an animal colony
Good vid btw
Thank you, and great info! I was definetly being a bit loose on the sea creatures lol
It now makes more sense that she’s the collective anger of those who died from pollution.
I personally like this game and the story makes a bit of sense to me (I’m racking my brain together)
The game is phenomenal the story just has issues in the writing imo
Pretty sure the lazer shooting crabs in the abyss are a reference to the silence brand meme
I don’t see the plot holes or mischaracterization you complain about in the video
I feel like you’re trying to seek out a happy ending where there is none and everything you criticize is just the reality of the situation when it comes to pollution and climate change since they have some intersection in the theming of the story.
You critique Kril’s characterization when it’s spelled out right in the beginning
There are predators, scavengers and those who just want to be left alone.
People like Krill exist. Even knowing the gravity of the situation, it doesn’t take priority over their comfortability or desire to “keep things the same”
Firth’s plan with the shell makes sense because it amplifies his motivation which is still greed.
It just takes it to its forgone conclusion that his fiscal ambition combined with that level of power would spell disaster in the name of profit basically evolving his greed from entrepreneur to that of like a CEO
the ending is frustrating because it’s the same as real life. Even with all of the knowledge of our harm to the environment. Most of us will just carry on as normal because there’s only so much that we can do as individuals. Most people are not the heroes nor the villains of their stories. They’re just the protagonist of their own individual tales
TL:DR
Kril just wants to grill
Capitalism bad
We’re all fucked unless we can start to see further than our own eyes
Realistic ending feels bad in crab souls game
25:12 that “oh” of realizations is funny
For me people don’t realize that Krill wasn’t really in the wrong that much at the end (in terms of the treasure plotline), little bro was fighting off zombie crabs, Massive Underwater Horrors and such WHILE dealing with everyone’s bs for the first time since he’s always be isolated up to this point like none of the characters genuinely know what he had to deal with and hit him with the
“we all have our own problems kid”
Obviously I’m not justifying him being reckless and getting everyone almost killed but you might get the idea
Idk the ending irked me but that doesn’t ruin the game imo
It’s decent
Krill is one of the Mc that develops a lot in ths game ike it changes him as a craberson 360
And that is great story writting
The geek inside me is going insane after you called Praya dubia a jellyfish
Parry is really good for staggar. Wait for them to attack you, then release block to parry.
When I was fighting camtscha I got pushed under his old shell and the arena where I pulled him down and pulled myself to him until I staggered him and did the big stab before we both fell into the abyss, still won tho
Btw, levee was the enemy by the helmet
About topoda. most of his normal attacks can be easily parried. do NOT, however, do NOT riposte. he punishes riposte VERY harshly
31:42 "but not that kind of gun-" "holy f-"
I like to torture myself cause I did the shell splitter first before doing anything else, and same goes for Pagarus, like literally I sat fought Pagarus 30 times before beating him, I was also a parry crab
I love the ending of this game. Sometimes you don’t get what you want not even close. It’s a sad ending and you saved no one get over it
I accidentally fought the sludge roller by mistake thinking he was mandatory
Edit: Just wanted to comment on some things also
1: I was wondering if you could beat the Sand Between boss and sequence break, and I was right.
44:46 he low-key sounds like gumball
i think you kind of get it with how you think behind the character writing with him not really caring i always interpreted as there is nothing that can be done about it no matter how much someone fights and even if they think they have won that fight new corruption and pollution will always follow and you need to do your best just to make even one life better because the bigger issues no matter how much you ever fight can never be fixed and people only ever look out for themselves in the end
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that kril's entire personality and the ending were dogshit. Good game though, in terms of actual gameplay.
I finished hollow knight but couldnt even beat the first boss here, then i got a gun and destroyed everyone
Carcinia likely refers to Carcinisation, the form of evolution where every non-crab crustacean eventually evolves to, well, crab.
Oh my god lichenthrope is so good
Maybe they will make a DLC to improve the ending?
The UA-cam algorithm doing you a disservice man, maybe try posting your videos on a few Reddit pages (if they’re related to the video obviously). I’ll like the video as well tho, you’re so underrated it’s actually nuts
Did anyone kill Pagurus after going into Flotsam Vale?
its actually genuinely insane how underrated you are
I think you kinda don’t get Firth a little bit, especially his plan. To me Firth was always just using Kril and the others to get treasure because he idolizes Roland and thinks that’s the best way. I’ve always kinda seen Firth as Kril if he grew up under the ocean rather than the tide pool and his plan to sink trash island is because he still wants to get rich. He doesn’t actually care about the people he just wants the fame and admiration of others
how does this video only have 50 likes??
To me, the story was really good, especially going into the Unfathom, but then, after literally the best part of the whole story and game, the story just crumbles into pieces. It's a shame really.
I fought Pagurus when I first encoutered him and it was painful. Banana Cheeze carried
I fr thought your pfp was that one image where the black cat has his face covered in milk besides that great video subscribed
I think that the point the developers were trying to make is that trash can’t be gotten rid of, because of our actions or something. I feel like it could’ve been done better though. Like, you can have the crab fail, but not because he’s dumb. Make him fail because of a hopeless fight, there was nothing he could’ve done instead :P it’d be funny
I love your editing style also
Yea I agree the characters just kind of fell flat at the end :/ I'm glad you enjoy the video! thank you 🙏
Damn... That ending sucks... But this was a pretty good video, probably not gonna play Another Crab's Treasure because I have anger issues and don't want to break my TV (Plus I'm bad at souls games). I hope you continue to make amazing videos and have a great life.
Thank you cooldudeninja 🙏❤️
Does Michael Reeves do the Loan Sharks voice? That's awesome! I knew he was in it but not that guy.
@@SickTruck yep!
21:55 JET STREAM SAM ?!?!?!!
Nephro(the first boss) Is voiced by Giannini(Gabriel Ultrakill)
@@TytheGhost Nah,Brazilian samurai big booty
Ayo? 37:40 is so wild, wtf
Lmaooo
Hey just saying it's a moon snail not a moon jellyfish
Is it just me or does prawnathan sound alot like the loan shark?
@@sunburst2740 is this satire
@dancorona I'm hinting at the fact that prawnathan IS the loan shark, and there's evidence to support this that after you meet him you find the grabby toy behind the pawn shop
@sunburst2740 I know, I was asking if it was satire bc it's obviously the case that the loan shark and prawnathan are the exact same person it's confirmed to us in prawnathans first few lines of dialogue
Awesome video Dan!
DLC PLES FOR THIS GAME MORE STORY
I lik crab gaem🤤
It's a fantastic game
I agree that The story was good until the end.
Got here cuz Crab game, stayed here cuz Chilean Flag
i love the video man. and we share the same opinion about alot of it, but i think you misunderstand microplastic at the end. firth cant just get rid of the economy, if he did then theyd all just be kril in the beginning.
and kril in the end still isnt the best guy, hes still definitely got problems but i do think that hes learned not to be such a shut in
Why does this video have so many views but so little likes lol?
Carcinia likely refers to Carcinisation, the form of evolution where every non-crab crustacean eventually evolves to, well, crab.
Ohhhh interesting 🤔
