  • Former West Ham forward Tony Cottee didn't hold back in a scathing review of current Hammers head coach Julen Lopetegui during an appearance on talkSPORT. With Lopetegui under mounting pressure following a poor start to the season, Cottee expressed his doubts about the Spaniard's ability to turn things around, admitting he never supported the appointment in the first place. The West Ham legend voiced his belief that Lopetegui was not the right choice and called the decision to replace David Moyes a "sideways step." As the media spotlight intensifies, will Lopetegui survive the pressure? Watch now to hear the full story and analysis.

No one should be under any illusion if they think Moyes would be better. Under moyes we were subjected to the worst football in years. He mismanaged transfers and tactics. Never played youth. Only played a favoured 13. Was continually outthought by younger managers. Had no idea when to substitute. I’m not saying jlo is great but I’d have anyone other than Moyes

Moyes is a top-three West Ham manager of all time. Last season he finished ninth and reached the quarters of the Europa League. His time may well have been up because the club - and football in general - is moving in a different direction, and West Ham have greater financial fire power than at any point in their history (our wage bill is still only 9th in the league), but the kind of animosity he receives from so-called fans demonstrates the radicalising effects of social media.

Completely agree. Fans cherry pick stats as an argument against Moyes - ignoring all his success. A better arguement is the style of football - hence his departure.

@@beatonthedonis yep he also lost to Bristol city after drawing at home. Conceded 74 goals despite setting up to play defensively. Had good luck to beat Burnley, THFC, AFC, MUFC and even more luck taking a point from 4 others like AVFC, CPFC, NUFC &BHA all of these at home. I said at the beginning year, Moyes was leaving the club in a state and was always going to be an overhaul. That means the first season would always be a transition. We have to wait until December but all this pressure is not helping. I said then, before the transfers, top half finish was good. Then Europe next season. Let him do the job and then see towards the end unless we’re in a relegation battle. Then he would have to go earlier. They gave him a two year contract for a reason.

I’m with you Gonzo, it’s not time to throw him under the bus yet, way too early. He’s a new manager with a new team a lot who haven’t played together, he need time to find his right team. I must admit I didn’t want him, but don’t forget Moyes was beaten by five goals quite a few times. We have good players and hopefully he can turn it around.

Lop has zero credit, come in spent millions, arguably our best ever squad and he's managed to make them all bang out of form and playing with zero tactics.

Moyes spent half a billion pounds on the smallest 2nd oldest squad in the league. His old small side shipped 74 goals, the most we have ever conceded, even though Moyes is a defensive minded manager. Moyes also demanded that he have last say on transfers and threw away huge amounts of money on failures like Hugill, Ajeti, Kral, Vlasic, Philips etc etc
I would have Lopetegui over Moyes all day long

I'm sorry but this is all Sullivans fault, NOBODY wanted FLOPategui, there was even a very public petition against his appointment, I for one was criticised for saying that he is Moyes 2.0, the Spanish David Moyes, that his tactics are poor, that he doesn't give youth players a chance. "But he was good enough for real Madrid..." I kept being bombarded with .... he was SACKED AFTER 14 GAMES as he couldn't get a good performance out of the most exciting and talented squad in world football, it was the worst football the Madrid fans had seen in many decades.. The man is clueless, tactically inept and he needs to go now ...the performances and results have been pathetic and unacceptable and he should never have been appointed. The FLOPategui experiment has failed... he needs to go now !! Do not want this dragging on like with Moyes where it was constantly "3 games to save his job" throughout the season...he IS Moyes 2.0 the Spanish edition!!! He needs to go NOW !!!

It's all very knee-jerk and far too soon to want someone out who's taken on a team that needs completely changing. The media pile-on is frankly embarrassing too. I've not seen a single fan call in to defend Loppy, all Moyes lovers. So contrived. And shame about TC. He was my hero growing up but since the whole PAI nonsense, he's just come across as a bit of a bitter jebend who'll say whatever people want him to say for money. Really hope we see a massive improvement in the next couple of games so the noise dies down a little and J-Lo can get on with his job.

Steidtman has a very good reputation. He has the right to distance himself from a clearly obvious appointment failure. Steidtman doesnt want that on his cv. People have to stick up for themselves when sullivan is involved. Sullivan makes some car crash decisions. I would distance myself from these decisions, and so must Steidtman. Its now glaringly obvious lopetegi is not the man to lead us and the quicker the plug is pulled the better. The season is in danger of becoming a disaster. Lets salvage it now.

I hope Julian does really really well we just have to figure out away when we lose the ball to be faster the transition to defend a lot better then we have been
We have to find a way of stopping teams running straight through us I know Liverpool are very fast team but true far too easy 3 and 4 passes and they are in our own box
Let's be pretty honest our midfield of Alvarez and whoever else is in there is not up to it
Alvarez should be the one open yellow card trouble instead of Porchetta because if you if you were to be a Scenic I think Like Me he gets booked every game and 3 or 4 passes go astray
I don't think I'll midfield is strong enough is heaping pressure on the backline anell Julian as well
There is no doubt to me we have the firepower put we have to try and keep the ball other than that we have to defend better the defending last week was shameful and yes I am talking about Max kilman and John Claude they were useless Max kilman played everybody on side instead of attacking the ball who played them all

I think Simon Jordan who is a Moyes fan had a good summing up of things so far - which was quite a surprise given where he sits with Moyes
But he told Jim White that it’s early doors to be talking sack - he acknowledged that some of the performances havnt been great and team selections have also been a bit mystifying but we’ve beaten Bournemouth (Cup) drawn at Fulham and beaten Palace at palace and we all know what they did to us last year
And played four of the best teams in Europe and lost - the performance against Liverpool was an improvement and that’s what has to continue today and going forward
People including me are questioning some of his decisions - the most o virus to me is why take off Summerville and bring on Creswell when 0-3 against Chelsea that needs explaining what’s the rationale behind that move
Still no answer to KUDUS where does he play him if Summerville owns the left side and Bowen the right - well with no real striker (of any note) why not use kudus through the middle he’s skillfull has tremendous pace and most defenders hate having to look after him and generally when in possession has two or more defenders around him with him in the box centrally the worse thing he’s gonna do
Is win you penalties because he’ll get hacked over for sure - and let’s be honest what on earth have we got to lose by trying it as they’ve mainly been saying it’s already a problem and where do we play him - Bowen didn’t make any impact so give the dammed thing a try I’m not gonna hammer JLO for trying stuff - I’d rather he did that than just make poor changes that don’t impact a game

Bit rich of Cottee saying that, he wanted Moyes gone many times last year. We need to get behind the manager and team. Don't forget we lost to Man City, Chelsea and Villa. 3 teams who are doing well. We played better against Liverpool but it wasn't our night. Lopetgui wasn't my first choice but we needed Moyes out and I think it will work out ok. I'm getting sick of the Moyes cronies in the media spouting the 'Be careful what you wish for' line. If Moyes was that good why hasn't he been grabbed by a bigger club? The board have backed Lopetegui and we can't really complain about that, however the board will never take a risk on a manager and will always take the safe and cheap option. That's our biggest problem. Let's get behind the team and manager and see how things go. Be positive I say.

I think Tony should have measured his view. Lopetegui could still tun it around like he did at Wolves. Of course we are hoping for more, but when you change managers things don't always get better right away. In terms of results Moyes was a top three manger at this club and deserved better treatment.
His style of football did not please everyone, but even that was exaggerated. The 5-0 win over Freiburg and the 4-2 win Over Brentford in the middle of a bad run (which all teams have) showed we could play a variety of styles and get results.
I love the idea of the West Ham way as much as the next fan, but that style was very inconsistent. Former greats have given their opinion on the West Ham Way.
Bobby Moore at the end of his career lamented the fact that West Ham never won the title or even mounted a challenge. Look for yourself at how many bottom half finished a team with three world cup winners achieved.
Brooking toward the end of his playing time lamented West Ham's lack of consistency.
The joke in football was West Ham came down with the Christmas decorations. In 1976 We didn't win a single league game in the second half of the season after being two points off top with a game in hand.
Fans who know the history of this club will appreciate when we have it good.
Those who don't Find the "Robert Banks" Channel as it is one of the best west ham history channels I have seen.

We should be looking at teams like Brighton who have a clear strategy so it doesn't matter when the manager or sporting directors etc. get poached, because there's a proper succession plan in place to replace them. However, that can only come from the top and Sullivan has proved time and again he has no vision to do this.

How can any chairman expect results when the chairman himself does not complete a squad build , we have no mobile striker which will cost 50million plus and also a top defensive midfielder . We have not solved our squad problems we never do. 100 million spent ? So what we are still short .

Cottee has been rimming Moyes in public for 18 months - he used to be my hero as a kid and tbh I’m astonished that as a life long West Ham fan he was happy with that utter turgid crap we had to watch
He’d have changed his tune if he was playing Moyesball 30 yards away from the nearest team mate and fighting to win the ball in the air against two 6ft 6 centre halves
I don’t want JL but I want DM less

Absolutely deluded and toxic 'fans'...

Great Video Gonzo. I wanted Lopetegui out but to think about it in the clear light of day, I agree with you he should be given a chance for a given time. I saw some encouraging signs at Liverpool which is unbelievable considering the result. I have my doubts to whether he can do it but he is here now.

  • @philmcdonald7956
    @philmcdonald7956 20 годин тому

Agreed Gonzo, Loppy wasn't my pick either, but that's history. He isn't playing Moyesball as some have suggested and personally I want him to have a reasonable chance of making us work. I also heartily approve of his attitude to subs and their timing (one of my biggest gripes with Moyes). Far too early to be thinking about ditching him IMHO. Before the start of the season it was being mentioned that we might have zero points after 4 games because it takes time for a new coach and so many new players to gel. How times change.

  • @DanHolder-s4m
    @DanHolder-s4m 18 годин тому

What we’re seeing now is Moyes’ legacy. A threadbare squad of aging and overworked players with no established tactics other than a low block and counter attack. Every week. Against every team. For four years. Is it any wonder established players are struggling to adapt to new tactics and a raft of new players are struggling to find their feet. Moyes is the first to highlight and criticise our current failings. But there’s no acknowledgement for the state he left the club in. Give Lopetegui time.

David Moyes and his cronies must be rubbing their hands together. I'd rather be relegated than have Moyes back. Lopetegui wasn't my choice but I'm behind him for now. Another channel is saying Tim wants to leave. Seems like there's a boardroom meltdown coming which is the last thing we need.

  • @philnotley5138

Most west ham fans had had it with Moyes after last season. The hammerings we got home and away we gutting the record number of goals conceded was the final straws. It’s all very well being dour pragmatic killing the game is all very well til it stops working. The state and quality of squad Moyes left was frankly shocking
The fans didn’t force him out the board didn’t renew his contract the lazy be careful what you wish for is just pizz poor journalism frankly why shouldn’t a club like west ham want to progress. No one wanted Lopetegu the fans had a petition saying no thanks it’s a cheap option because he was a freebie. Most fans watched the recruitment and thought we’ll give him a chance well it’s not our fault it’s not happening

Lopetegui has a particular style of play which requires two things to be successful slower paced leagues and a squad full of pace. He needs to except with this group of players in the Premier league he's preferred playing style doesn't work. To be honest If he doesn't change I expect that he'll be gone by Christmas.

  • @kevingoodman3725

Sean Dyche!!!! A terrible idea, same as Moyes negative. Don’t think very many people wanted this manager but he needs to start applying tactics that suit the premier league rather than lower level football and using his players wisely and in the right position and hopefully we will get a few wins and the pressure drops and he can keep changing the team until it’s working right. The defence is still the biggest problem apart from a natural finisher but let’s hope we don’t ever see a repeat of the chelsea game tactics.

I want us to do well but it's going to have to take time, we were never going to be charging back into Europe this year, at best we would hold mid table, we ain't relegated yet we got plenty of football still to come.
