Black Friday Sale now live: www.clubreadydjschool.com/club-ready-dj-course/ I added so much new content and bonus material - I have been devoting so much love and energy to it these past few months, hopefully you like :)
I just love the way this guy explains things, I’ve been djing for 8 years more or less, and I’ve always wanted someone as good as this guy to tech me with this good vibe and determination, thanks for that mate
From a DJ here who started on vinyl 25 years ago, this is sage advice. Even with sync on newer gear, you need this foundational skill. Great video brother!
Late reply, but yes even with all your tracks prepped to perfection, you still need these fundamentals. Different key snares for example can sound of even tho their grids are synced perfectly. This needs some micro adjustments on the fly.
It is not only that you are teaching really valuable lessons about djing, it is also that you truly enjoy doing it. Man you've got such a good vibe, love it. From everything you said I'm staying with this: "step up and focus on what is truly important: connecting like minded people through music and creating world class atmospheres that leave people inspired and wanting more". Thank you Andrew!
Using the boosted highs to hear if things are beat matched is genius. Because you can hear the music "phasing" in the highs a lot more clearly than in the bass. Things can sound phasey even if they are super closely matched, so when they are fully synced the phasing sound will disappear. Nice dude!
I have been DJ'ing for over a decade......and you sir have a special gift for teaching this stuff. You also have some incredible thoughts and tips on how to get better that I have never seen other DJs talk about. You are a nation treasure. Thank You
These explanations are the best I've seen on beatmatching, no doubt. Add to that your absolutely non-menacing and non-exclusive encouraging and willing to share attitude, and the result can only be one: You're a great teacher.
new to DJing so i dont know if this is good practice, but a trick I use to beatmatch a lot easier is that I hit play right after the down beat, that way I know for sure to spin the jog wheel clockwise. This allows me to beat match much quicker.
Mixing on high hats is the tightest way to beat match, I was taught this over 20 years ago using vinyl. Nice 1 for sharing this on a vid for others to learn
I've only been practising DJing since the weekend, so I'm totally new to this at 43. This is by far the best way I've heard this explained, and I've been watching lots of videos. Looking forward to getting some practice in. Great video
i've been mixing for atleast 5 years and I still watch this, don't know why... had nobody to learn me back then i was learning by myself and i think its the best way, but the way you show and explain to people is awesome, also what helped me mostly about beatmatching techno is that i went on full on oldschool equipement with DJM 400 and CDJ 350 , therefore u dont have visuals only track lenght and your ears, best way to learn how to beatmatch, no need to cover anything :) what also got me better in beatmatching is my playstyle i love to mix tracks 130-133 bpm with hardtechno 142+ , those are way off from each other and once u get them together feeling is increadible :D
Been DJing since the 80's during the era of vinyl, and I used to train DJs back then as well. We had nothing buy vinyl, so there was no way we could loop intros or instrumental breaks, All we had was a manually counted BPM. I still spin today, but looking back, I've always felt all those who wanted to be DJs should start on vinyl. They would immediately learn these basics of beat matching. Your video brings back memories of the old days!
Ive been a vinyl dj for 20 years and retired..BUT now i need another go as kids are grown up..A dj i knew rocked his vinyl on the hi hats ( Im a drummer too before a dj) It seemed weird and never re seen ubtil watching your video..Im about to get my first controller,I need to relearn since cdj 1000's..This is a superb video ,No ego just love for giving the people your experience,Kudos 🙏🙏
bought a pioneer DDJ-SR last week off impulse because I just love music so much and have pondered DJing but was caught up in the hard truth that I’ll have to be terrible before I’m great. Nobody likes to suck but I wanna do it for the love not for the results. You clearly got that love for it, for the art form and this video was super helpful! Keep it up cuz ur really helping us!
If you're using rekordbox, press Space bar to hide the waveforms. Definitely the hi's/mids are a better option. Especially so when I play bass/deep dubstep where it's easier to match the snares than the kick.
Great video! I agree about the highs, I truly feel the beats are "locked in" when you get those highs in line. It gives that "crisp" feeling. Beat matching is all about "feeling." Once you get it, you will "feel" when the beats lock in.
Yea it makes sense since snare and hi hats shorter "notes" than the kick therefore you don't have much room for error so it will be more precise but harder to master.
Hey Andrew I just came home pretty tired ready to chill and watch some of your videos in view only mode. Well not possible so I am standing behind my new DDJ-400 practising to beatmatch now. Your energy and vibes are truly amazing. Thanks man! Super excited to do the beginner course. 🙌🏽
Great video and that’s a great tip about the high hats / treble EQ for fine tuning beat matching. People think it’s the bass beats, actually easier to spot the issue with high hats. Never see this mentioned anywhere 👍
Coming from vinyl and without saying it after the fact, the highs are what I use and have always used for beat matching...You are absolutely right, the precise limited sound of the highs make it the best way to beat match, in my humble opinion and until I switched to Denon gear, the blue in the RGB waveform and the way it is laid out in Traktor and Rekordbox, give you the same reference point.....Awesome vid, cool vibes! Thanks so much.
I've worked many types of decks for over 3 decades and followed the development of DJ equipment. Learning all types of styles, from looping, cutting and scratching vinyl of Funk and Hip Hip, blending Soul and an eclectic range of music, to beat mixing soundscapes of House music. I have also embraced the experimental and creative use that can be found in CD Decks and controllers. I know my stuff and have delivered DJing classes. You know your stuff and delivered a great tutorial here. Respect, peace and love to you.
Thats Amazing advice! In my first gig 3 days ago where I was promised CDJ-2000s but got surprised with CDJ-900 , No hotcues , no Sync , No waveforms and I messed up first 3 songs of my beatmatching bcoz of the delay. This video is such a huge help!
This is a video I wish I had watched last week! Had my first club gig on the weekend and found out the hard way how much I rely on the stacked waveforms. This video is amazing - appreciate your content!
My life changed since I bought his course. The level of confidence that he gave me,the way he explains everything, the patience, the quality and clarity of his videos, his passion-are all amazing. I made a huge jump from where i was and where I am now (and still have a long way to go) - thanks to this man’s course and I’m looking forward to dig deeper and deeper because this journey is absolutely beautiful(hard but beautiful). Andrew, you and your course rock and I cannot thank you enough for what you do for us! Congrats! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just brilliant. Still getting value from your content even after your course and being able to DJ now. Great teacher and looks like a wonderful person!
You'r fantastic, and I truthly believe that you inspire lots of djs. I'm a begginer and I love the way how you make it's seems djing is easy. It's not, it's an art and it must have lots of pratice. You'r a great teacher. Thank you very much for all, and for that hhappiness.
These are great techniques. Another method I never see as much anymore is only using the pitch fader without touching the platters. It's a great tool to have for making adjustments while both tracks are in the mix. obviously more useful without master tempo on (and essential for vinyl mixing imo). Essentially instead of nudging the platter to line up the beats you pitch up or down past the bpm of the other track a bit then pull it back to position just as the beats line up.
Using the highs is how i learned to be on time with introducing vocals into a mix. Hip hop really focuses on the highs for counts and will mix into alot more then I ever realized one I got better at counting the highs.
Awwww you're so sweet and smiley, Andrew. You've made me feel so much clearer about my DJing, and the way you explain techniques actually make sense - and I remember what you teach. I mean thinking of the jog wheel as a clock, so simple... genius! :) The course is so worth it and so welcoming, no matter what level you're at eg, I got so much out of the material which I didn't expect. I've had musical training and a natural ear but had been winging it DJing for years, probably made it much harder for myself tbh!
Finally someone who understands hardtechno beat matching. Sooo much easier on higs. Sometimes even when I already put track in and I hear that tiny mistake. I put down bass and correct it 😅. But never saw anyone who knows that.
The High EQ boost wast the icing on the cake ! I always use that while mixing to enhance the transition when it doesn't feel crisp enough . thanks for explaining that
Nice tips for newbies……regarding understanding phrasing and beats…. I keep telling the kids that ask me about how music works to go and do a few step or aerobic classes…. Then they will start to realise when to hit the ‘1’ & how phrasing works. (Glad to see u back in your studio man)
Regardless of the fact that the video was incredibly educational, you are very likeable. I could listen to you explain things for hours. Keep it that way brother!
Super cool video! In college I would DJ at the local bars and I was sloppy, I would stare at the screen and try to line up the beats and id be more focused on the screen rather than listening to the average person they couldn't tell but too someone who actually pays attention to DJs it was atrocious, after college I stopped mixing and start traveling all the US for work, I Decided to pick up the craft again and your excitement has motivated me and I'm starting from scratch after 2 years, throwing out all my bad habits! I go to shows and see my favorite DJ's every weekend depending if they're in whatever city I'm in and I actually go for the music rather than the other stuff.
YOU ARE AWESOME!!! THANK YOU! - The hihat EQ trick is a great actually as the low end tends to mask the rest of the frequencies tricking our ears into thinking is on point. Thanks for the tip!
Quick tip also: To get your Rekordbox on Windows/Mac into Browse mode, you can just hit the spacebar on your keyboard to engage browse mode quickly as long as Rekordbox is in the Performance view.
I’ve been following you for a while now. But I haven’t watch most of your beginners vids. This one auto played and when you got to the third way to beat match it made me smile. I learned on vinyl. And it took me more than 5 years to learn how to beat match. Being partially deaf in one ear. Also has left me close to tone deff. So the bass all blends together more often than not. So when I was learning how to mix. I had to find a marker in the music to use. Well I mix off the highs and mids. High hats or snares. To me they sound like a metronome, so those tones became my natural marker to mix on. Keep up the good work! From Melbourne Florida! DjJohnkaoss
Absolutely wow, the video was great but the postive, happy, joyness in your brother has got me hooked and thank you sooo much for creating this video. I have subscribed and can't wait to see more of your positive energy and sharing your knowledge. Thank you made my day and got me out of a low and back into the mood to get my decks out!
Hey Andrew, absoloutly love this! I will get practicing! For anyone that hasn't purchased the full course yet what are you waiting for? Its the best investment I'v ever made!
Hallelujaaa!!! Your beat matching lessons are the first ones and I am afraid still the only ones (not searching for another ones as I do not need them anymore because of you 🤩) that are showing and explaining the way how to effectively learn and understand the way how to beat match. I have learned and practised your methods and beat matching became a game and stopped to be the problem. And it really brought the better understanding and feeling the songs and music. And I started to hear that even beat grid synchronization does not necessarily mean that the beats are matching, because the main core of the beat is often little further in the curve that can be seen on the screen. So beginnings of the beatwaves helps to match the tempo, but does not mean the real beat matching. In such situations DJ has to have the ability to hear it (eyes are not helpful) and make the right micromovements to correct it. So we really cannot rely just on the analysis of the software, nor our own eyes, but just the knowledge of beat matching by ear. All DJs learn it!!!! So master thank you thank you thank youuuu for these lessons!!!! Perfect learning methods! Simply explained, good examples, absolutely perfect learning material!!! And your enthusiasm and smile is just energizing 🤗 I am just enjoying your every lesson!!! Thank you!!! Tip for beginners: Good headphones are needed! Such headphones that are capable to let you hear the gradation of the sounds once the beat match is reached. Not all headphones can play it and make the learning much harder or even impossible. Believe me, I have such model at home... Really bad choice...
Oh wow, I’ve actually been doing the trick with the highs for a while now just out of intuition, love your description of it as a ball point pen vs a thick marker!
Dude you’re awesome ive been watching your vids for a couple months and it’s drastically improved me since day one. To see how genuine you are about the art and the music is such a dope thing! Youre stuff its truly helpful keep it up🤙🏼
Thank you big time for the info and the tips and hints. => "Focus on what's truly important: Connecting like-minded people through music and creating world class atmospheres that leave people inspired and wanting more." Sign every word of that. That's what drives me when I play sets. Creating waves of positive energy to affect hearts and souls in a good way and have it multiplied by listeners in the best case. in my existence as rather "young" DJ with about 2 yrs. of practical experience I can play more with beats meanwhile and I do feel them definitely better than at the start but proper beat matching by ear I still can't do (laziness and the availability of a synch button is one part of the problem 😁 ). Thanks for the inspiration, I'm going to practice again now (..in a bit 😀 ).
Just one minute into this and I finally have a moment to say and remind us all that we listen to music, we don't see it. Of course I will continue to enjoy the rest of this tutorial as I always have in the past because I have a good feeling this is going to be another real very good one especially, enjoy.
I can beatmatch, no problem. But on such occasions as showed: loop, small difference in bpm etc. one still can use the sync and quantize. Most club gear have sync. I do not want to argue, beatmatching is learning music but is sometimes time-consuming in a live mix. Time that could be used for other creative work, setting up fx, samples etc..... Love your videos and keep up the good work!!!!
Bollocks. Stop looking at bpms, beat match by ear, practice, practice and practice, it becomes so easy. Thats the problem with 'djing' now, wouldn't call using the sync button or CDJs as djing, could teach a chimp to use either. Proper djs use Vinyl (even though they'll be seen using cdjs at events, as that's what's in place, you know, for the good looking chimps that use sync, like Charlotte etc) the ones that are good, practice or learned their trade using Vinyl. All good using effects and shit after you've hit the sync button, but if you plan your set well enough, you eo t need effects to add to it.
@@davidrowan3853 As said I can beatmatch, also Vinyl. Beatmatching is good to learn your music, to understand it. I wouldn't call myself a chimp if I use sync. And it has always been the discussion between beat matching and sync. If I have the time I beat match, but doing it in fast remixes consumes too much time. That is why I use the sync button too. I also like to quantize because I like to use samples and have them on beat. As for the effects, I like effects in the right place and at the right time. Sure, some DJ's over do it. As said time is, depending on the Genre, essential. I like to use my gear to the fullest. Try to be creative with e. g. slip and slice. I see a DJ more as a musician.
@@danielschulmann539 if you have the time? How long does it take you catch how much the beats off? 30 secs, max. Plenty of time to fanny about about with fx if that's what your in to. I didn't call you a chimp either but you COULD train a chimp to use cdjs. No problem.
Brilliant video Andrew. Would love you to do a video on 'riding the tempo' for tracks (disco funk etc) where the bpms fluctauate. Nobody is doing videos like that. best ive found is watching djs like 'Motor City Drum Ensemble'. Be great to see you deal with those generes for the actual mixing too, as IMO the tree/eqs work doesnt tend to work for these genres, and its more about fades.....
Always cool videos. I didn't have a mixer when I started DJing in the 80's. Just two old decks. Had to use ears only and slow the platter with my finger as there were no pitch controls. Just have fun and don't reply on the gear too much.
haha I rarely say this on a video, but man this dude is so likable. I wonder if he's just a generally happy and nice guy. Helpful tutorial and easy to watch.
I do love this video! After 3 years djing I just understand how to use the wheels. I buy a new machine with better wheels that my old one. I’m gonna practice as you propose. Thanks mate!
Awesome video and very informative for new djs! I do the same thing but instead of using the hi eq, I use the color knob and rotate it to high to capture the crisp percussion in the track the. Phase it back in during the merge..
Great Video! Your energy and the way you explain things is just amazing. You really have pushed my method to beat match and use Pioneer Gear. thank you, please keep on going!
Super helpful. Thank you very much. This was the one thing that kept driving me nuts when mixing. I can beat match and I have used micro movements during long intros or outros but I just couldn't get my brain to function when it came to not using the wave form to beat match. Now I have something I can practice on specifically.
This is really great, Phil. As a beginner who is doing twitch, but about to start having some live gigs, I realy wanted some things to practice so I don't sound like I bought the controller that morning. Lovely things like this give me actionable things to play with!
I've tried that second method before but without knowing any structure of how to diagnosis it. You explained it perfectly so im going to give that another try!
i have to get ready for cdj2000s in a few weeks and ive been trying to find an actual good video on beat matching and im so glad i finally found you!!!
I've learnt how to dj about 10 years ago on vinyl and autophon concord needles, and it was a lot harder to learn back then, then it is to learn now. But also djing is something either you got it or you don't. You have to have that ear for it. Another way to practice is also to listen to other people dj and listen to long sets and count the beats and the drops and the cross over timings, sfx timing, beat matching over laps and ect.
Good tips and really good material for beginners mate.I'm one of them and i can tell you that i can see results.thank you for all of your videos and for your free mini course.Good stuff!

I go to shows and see my favorite DJ's every weekend depending if they're in whatever city I'm in and I actually go for the music rather than the other stuff.
Man I love this guy so much, he teaches with ease and he looks so happy doing so, keep up !
Keep up the good work!

love this guy, true passion and smiling all the time. thank you youtube algorithm for pop this video up
Absolutely wow, the video was great but the postive, happy, joyness in your brother has got me hooked and thank you sooo much for creating this video.
Really bad choice...
well said, I appreciate your support!
The best beat matching tutorial I have seen! Thanks for sharing your skills :)
Oh wow, I’ve actually been doing the trick with the highs for a while now just out of intuition, love your description of it as a ball point pen vs a thick marker!
I love your enthusiasm! You got me feeling better about myself even though I not great. Keep up the great videos! House music all life long!
Awesome! Thank you!
What a shout using the highs as a clearer guide for beat matching I'll be trying this out when I'm putting my next mix together. 👍👍
Love it!! Your teaching and your energy is fantastic!!!
Just one minute into this and I finally have a moment to say and remind us all that we listen to music, we don't see it. Of course I will continue to enjoy the rest of this tutorial as I always have in the past because I have a good feeling this is going to be another real very good one especially, enjoy.
Well said!
The way you're explaining you've convinced me to get your courses! Cheers man, I can't wait to get to work! 💪💪💪
This is awesome news!!!!! www.clubreadydjschool.com/club-ready-dj-course/
Love your videos and keep up the good work!!!!
when you analyse those tracks in rekordbox or serato just change the bpm if its not perfect so lets say 128.07 change to 128 :)
@@matej22 Do not get it. Why would one do that?
No problem.
I subscribed to this channel because he always smile. He brings positivity while im learning. thank you for the vibe 😉😉
Thanks for subbing!
Great tutorials as always! Sharing with my newbie dj friends :)
Lik ima neverovatnu energiju, sve pohvale ! BRAVO !
I don’t even have any DJ gear I’m
Just watching this cuz the Dj seems like a cool knowledgeable person. Inspirational
Great shout. I would also be interested in seeing Andrew do a video for this
Third that. Always tricky.
you are such a nice and Kind Person.
Wish all DJs were Like that
Cheers and thank you
Always cool videos.
This guy is simply the best teacher I've found so far
Thanks mate :)
great tips as always, cant find a more enthusiastic dj on youtube love your vids man
Your energy alone is so inspiring! I'm transitioning from my comp to newer club decks so I really appreciate your videos! Thank your =)
I do love this video!
Love your energy bro 🙌🏽
You are awesome! Thank you 4 the NRJ and the techtips!
I have been watching your videos for sometime and I absolutely love that atmosphere and the way you teach, I will definitely be joining soon 🔥
Super informative dude! Many thanks that tip for determining pitch is invaluable! so simple yet so good! Big thanks, big up and peace out 🙂
This is really great, Phil. As a beginner who is doing twitch, but about to start having some live gigs, I realy wanted some things to practice so I don't sound like I bought the controller that morning. Lovely things like this give me actionable things to play with!
Absolutely brilliant video
after 5 months of boring beat matching practise, i wish i could seen your video sooner, thank you!!
I've tried that second method before but without knowing any structure of how to diagnosis it. You explained it perfectly so im going to give that another try!
i have to get ready for cdj2000s in a few weeks and ive been trying to find an actual good video on beat matching and im so glad i finally found you!!!
Good luck!
If you are considering the paid course, go for it, its brilliant
Turning up the hi’s really is a gamechanger, thanks for sharing! 🔥
