East New York has roads that look like they were lifted straight off the surface of the moon they are so pitted and lumpy. They would be more acceptable on a bike with fat mountain bike tires, but are terrible with 100psi 16" Brompton tires. I've taken that way once and don't intend to go back without good reason.
Great to see you take almost my exact route to work. Liberty Ave is such a tough shared bike lane. I have no idea why it is considered apart of the brooklyn queens greenway. I generally go down to pitkin, it's a wider street.
I get cut off everyday. Riding in NY is not for everyone. After a ride, I am pretty tired from having to pay constant attention to cars, cycists, pedestrians, etc. But I still enjoy it.
3:00 I saw 3 or 4 run-over rats when I was riding up Mulburry Street two weeks ago. smh 3:30 BTW: In future if you continue down Schimmerhorn past Flatbush you will come to Ashland which will take you to the Barclay Center without having to brave Flatbush. 7:40 In Brooklyn they have different parking rules. 10:13 No prob my man. Enjoy your ride. We will enjoy it with you. 11:00 Row houses, or what are known in the UK as Closes. 11:30 Your brakes are pretty squeaky. 15:15 Ahhh, East New York. Land of lunar crater'd roads. Roads so bad only a mountain bike would be fit to ride. Its like going off-roading while still in New York City. 17:45 That is the sketchiest looking Deli/Grocery I've ever seen. 21:15 If you need to get into shape look for a route near you you can take regularly which involves some modest climbs. A combination of short but effortful climbs and low effort spinning will build you up. I realize there aren't many hills on Long Island but you can look up elevation on routes with Komoot and use that to find modest climbs near you. Bananas are good to avoid muscle fatigue. Eat one before heading out and then carry one or two more for your ride depending on length. If you can reduce your gears so you are spinning more than grinding this will transfer the effort from your legs to your lungs and thus reduce muscle fatigue, though you will need to use heavy breathing exercises to compensate and avoid becoming winded.
It said 16.5 miles at the end. And to your first question no, but frankly neither are almost all bike lanes unless they are completely separated off from everyone else and mopeds don't use them. Even protected bike lanes are at major risk of turning cars.
34:51 Thanks you for the video I enjoyed it. Why not show the coffee break? I found this ride quite challenging. Perhaps I found New York so much more Industrial than Sydney.
Yes, we are signed up. We may be in a different group than the local ride group (Team Brompton Mafia if your joining I recommend the group. They are all nice!).
Yes, everytime I am in the city or a new area. I am happy to have it. That said, the battery life is horrible so you have to charge it before you leave.
As always, great video. Thanks for taking us for a ride!
A lot of that pavement looks to be in pretty rough shape. You are courageous to take it on on that bicycle.

It really slows you down. Its a work out avoiding potholes and paying attention to cars.
I've done that riding on only 10 inch electric scooter wheels! Tough but fun!
I use to ride my scooter but I flipped and fell twice so I gave up. I still have my Amish scooter though lol.
SO, enjoyed that! Will watch again!

Near the start the car had its right-hand indicator on , I thought it was going to cut you off 😮 .

Thanks for the tip. I wll give bananas a try. Now that the weather is finally getting nice again I will ride longer.
Is any street safe for cyclists if there are no protected bike lanes? What was your total mileage that day?
It said 16.5 miles at the end. And to your first question no, but frankly neither are almost all bike lanes unless they are completely separated off from everyone else and mopeds don't use them. Even protected bike lanes are at major risk of turning cars.
I probably rode over 20 miles that day. I was pretty tired when I finished lol.

When I took a break my leg cramped up so I didn't record anthing lol.
Moin! Great stuff, looks like germany…too many SUVs, bad roads and less people on the streets…
