I have been a 100% behind the scenes UA-cam watcher for the better part of a decade, but I had to break my silence to give you kudos on this video. There may be others explaining this, but the interwebs landed me here to find a solution to a problem that has plagued me for years. And it came at the perfect time. THANK YOU!
This is a game changer. The hoops I was having to jump through to edit vertical videos was about to drive me away from iMovie altogether. This workflow is already making my life easier. Thanks for sharing!
Another tip: the export method (export file) in this clip generates a low quality movie when working with HQ footage (ie 4k). choose "app preview" to get the original quality, it will generate a MP4 too.
This video is perfection...finally found a tutorial on youtube that actually worked for me lol. And you were clear, concise, and didn't skip over anything. Kudos, sir!
This was an enormous help to me as I prepared my first vertical video. There are always plenty of how-to videos to be found on online, but in my experience, few are as simple, clear, and thorough as this. Many thanks, Mike. Subscribed! Keep up the great work.
Complete game changer! Thank you! I've spent all evening trying to look at solutions to turning my landscape UA-cam clips into TikTok verticals and this worked so easy.
For anyone else wondering this, you can even remove the vertical video in the beginning and it'll preserve the frame size! So for me I just dumped in any vertical video from my phone, then removed it after I saw it had correctly setup the orientation for a vertical video and continued editing the footage I had that was landscape. Worked an absolute charm, thank you!!!
Michael thank you so much. It's creators like yourself that inspired me to start creating content and things that I'm good at and sharing those skills here on UA-cam.
Thank you! This 54 yo learning new things... you have excellent explanations and you've guided me to make my first TikTok for my furbaby & my purrbaby. Subscribed! I think you are going to be a big part in my journey.
Thank you for all the iMovie power tips! You can also use a vertical size image instead of movie to start it off in the right shape - I have a “shorts template” image file saved to quickly drag in whenever I’m doing this.
Why Apple has not added this to the "Create New" popup menu is beyond me. It's like they just put iMovie on a shelf 5 years ago and forgot about it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This was a HUGE help for me. There seem to be so many tutorials with ways to do this, but your video is the BEST one. Your way is much easier, I didn't lose out on video quality, and worked perfectly. THANK YOU!
YES. I knew there had to be an easier way. Thank-you!! (P.S. It's so funny to think that just a few years ago, vertical filming was looked down upon -- and now we're all scrambling to do it.)
Brilliant! I too was going crazy trying to figure out how to share a vertical video that contained a vertical image. These tips solved the problem - thanks!
I have been looking for a video with this particular subject and I have to tell you. This is the BEST explanation of all UA-cam, simple, clear and understandable. Thank you so much 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
I like the way you show and explain each and every step, without assuming any foreknowledge of software specifics on the viewer’s part. This is what I need.
I make 4 shorts every week from our church service and all that flippity flipping was making me crazy! What a find! I'm definitely a subscriber to your channel! Thank you!
did a collaborative project for a colleague's retirement and forgot to tell people to film in landscape so I ended up with a bunch of vertical clips. At first I thought I would have to go back and re-film so this was a time saving miracle, thank you!!
THANK YOU! As a photographer (definitely not a videographer), I've been incredibly frustrated by the way Instagram now gives preference to reels almost exclusively. Engagement for still photos has fallen off a cliff-bad news for a professional photographer like me. The Ken Burns effect is great for showcasing still photos, and no other amateur video editor I've found does the Ken Burns effect as easily as iMovie-but I've been stuck trying to make vertical reels using the old-school horizontal format. Not ideal, to say the least. This tutorial is a huge, huge help. Thank you!
Your following is well-deserved as are the likes and views on this video. Your tutorial was very thorough yet succinct enough not to be too long. Thanks so much for sharing how to make vertical format videos with us!
This is such great news! I made a vertical using your old system and was very pleased but THIS is even better news. Thank you for all your work for your subscribers.
To say that you saved my day would be the understatement of the decade. Thank you for such an instructive and well crafted tutorial. And you have a broadcasting voice to kill for!!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to make a horizontal into a vertical. I shoot 100% in landscape mode and making shorts has been a nightmare! But your method worked perfectly and I finally have a short that was so much easier than the crazy work around I have been doing! Thank you again!! You just earned me as a subscriber!
I literally refer back to this video each time I create a short, just to be sure I followed every step! Thank you for this effective, yet simple detailed tutorial :)
I can't be more grateful I've always been wanting to upload shorts but I just never knew how can I thank you so so much for this it's gonna change my YT channel life now
This is incredible!!! Exactly the functionality I have been looking for. It’s really awesome to be able to use the Ken Burns effect to slowly pan and keep the moving subject on the middle. Just repurposed a long form video for TikTok with this information.
OMG I CANNOT believe I've finally found out how to edit vertical videos in imovie!! THANK YOU! I have been struggling for months with tiny little editing tool apps which take an age and are just totally inaccessible for someone with limited fine motor skills. I am already familiar with imovie and did not know this was possible. Is it too crass to say you just saved my life!!! lol I am Deliriously happy right now!! 🥰🤪🤩
I am soooo happy I found this video, although it took a long time to find it. You explained everything I needed to know and more. Thank you so much, it is very clear and helpful.
Excellent! I've watched a handful of your videos now and they have helped me immensely in learning to make videos for my channel. With the clear and concise instruction I always finish ready to take on a new skill. I'll now be adding UA-cam shorts to my repertoire thanks to this one.
This is genius! Thank you for sharing this feature as well as other capabilities within this mode. I love your teaching style as well- starting with a “problem” and running through the solution- your tips and features in the second half were enjoyable to watch!
I have just acquired a MacBook again finally. Subscribed after using this video to help me start doing this. You explained this so well, thank you. It's 330 in the morning, but im just so excited to be able to do this.
Thanks for saving me a ton of time and energy in learning how to convert horizontal videos to vertical ones. This video is invaluable! Excellent job of explaining this awesome iMovie hack.
Thank you for this video it is sooo helpful I like the way you explained everything so well detail and straight to the point and still keeping it short.
this is the second time I am looking for help with how to do something on iMovie....and you come up clutch, will be checking your channel first from now on
FYI, App Preview currently exports at a maximum of 1080p @ 30 fps.
So I cant export a vertical video to 1080p x 1920p?
Trying to create vertical videos has been driving me crazy for ages.... Thank you so much for posting this, it's changed my life!
Glad it helped!
This did not work for me - dragged vertical footage in first, but the horizontal footage just resets itself once I drop it in. Any other tips here?

dude didnt even heart your comment
Apologies, missed this comment. 😅 Thank you for the Super Thanks! Glad you’re putting the method to good use. It’s how I make all my Shorts.
same!!! holy god what a gamechanger.
Michael, thank you! WOW! This may be just the trick to push me toward creating shorts for UA-cam. This feature is literally a game changer.
Another tip: the export method (export file) in this clip generates a low quality movie when working with HQ footage (ie 4k). choose "app preview" to get the original quality, it will generate a MP4 too.
Great tip, thanks!
Thank you!
great tip, works fine. thank you too!
Great tip! Thank you!
even export in app preview it still gives 1080 not 4K even though my original file is in 4K 60 ..... or am i missing something !! Alok
This is the perfect UA-cam tutorial. Helpful, straight to the point, no fluff, just perfect suggestions. Worked like a charm, thank you so much!

You are so crystal clear and have the most calm voice that says: "It's all ok and will work this time! I've got you!" Thank you!
Love your description! ❤ Thank you for the kind words, glad I could help.
My sentiments exactly!!

@@MacVideoMagic Can you tell me where can I download an image right to be used?
OMG you just saved my life, working on a grant for a community organization and needed to edit together their IG reels and stories! Perfect.
Why Apple has not added this to the "Create New" popup menu is beyond me. It's like they just put iMovie on a shelf 5 years ago and forgot about it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
So true!
Agreed. And again thanks so much!
This was a HUGE help for me. There seem to be so many tutorials with ways to do this, but your video is the BEST one. Your way is much easier, I didn't lose out on video quality, and worked perfectly. THANK YOU!
You are a wizard! And now I feel a relief that I can still use iMovie for my videos. Thank you a million times!
YES. I knew there had to be an easier way. Thank-you!! (P.S. It's so funny to think that just a few years ago, vertical filming was looked down upon -- and now we're all scrambling to do it.)
Nailed it. This video wastes no time, and teaches all and then some. Thank you!

Dude, I love you. I've spent an embarrassing amount of time agonizing over this, unsuccessfully fighting with this, etc. Thank you so much.
