There's an easier way to do it. Open your portait video in photos --> edit --> rotate to horizontal --> save --> THEN import it to iMovie and edit as you like --> save video --> open the new file in photos and rotate it back to portrait. Not only it's quicker, it also preserves original quality as cropping degrades video quality
THANK YOU!!! I just switched to iphone from android, because I thought social media use would be faster/easier, but I'm having major regrets, due to the incredible amount of extra steps to do anything with an Iphone. This tip made my life MUCH easier. Thanks!
Thank you!! I've never thought of that, always done it the same way the tutorial says and was looking for a solution as maybe there was one and I didn't know, cause the quality gets quite bad.
Yeah that was my thought, you're just removing something like 2/3 of the frame. I mean if you shoot in 4k and don't do any other crops it'll probably look ok on a phone, but it's not ideal.
For many years I used iMovie to edit all my videos and never had a problem with it, till one day my videos started coming out in a square format and I didn’t know how to fix this problem so I stop using and when to other platforms and till now I saw this video and how to fix this problem. Thank you for making this videos
This has been such a pain. I use iMovie horizontal for nearly everything and that makes using platforms that that use vertical something ot be avoided...which seems stupid. Your video just showed how easy it is-thank you.

OMG! You have no idea as to how much time you saved me by offering this in detail video explation on how to edit vertical videos on Imovie. Thanks a million!
Awesome video! I'm a total newb but your teaching style is such you made it super easy for me to figure out how to edit vertical videos in iMovie. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing! I applied this on my Macbook and worked just fine. However the thumbnail icon, when I look at the file in the Finder window, is still viewing a horizontal image. If I open it its vertical and the preview is vertical too. Just the icon/thumbnail that stays horizontal. Do you have any fixes for this? Thanks in advance 💥🙌
I’ve already done every single thing edit wise and all I needed was that little bit in the actual photo editor!! Peace and blessings bc I was not editing a video sideways 🙌🏾🙌🏾✨✨✨
Thanks for making it so easy to understand and follow. Do you have a tutorial on adding music, like from a Spotify playlist? Thanks again, and keep up the great tutorial vibes!
When I use a photo the magnifier glas doesn’t t show when I select a fragment . It does show when I use a vertical video. So is it not possible to make a vertical video with pictures?
iMovie on my iPhone suddenly asks for access to photos and music to get started. Didn’t do that before. I managed to let it get access to photos, ut don’t know how to let it get access to music. Refusing to start before I do it
I did that it still will not upload on youtube under shorts. They will if I don't edit them. Is there a fix to that? Same issue in my edit program on my computer.
i used to be able to do this but now i can’t seem to find that zoom icon on vertical pictures.. did apple update imovie?? i don’t understand because it used to work😩
My magnifier glass does not appear when I select the video. I clicked “edit video” to get into editing mode, selected the video, and nothing popped up. Did anyone else have this problem?
Absolutely ridiculous that Apple hasn’t added vertical support in 2023! Unreal…
Yep! I recommend using the CapCut app instead of iMovie app
Totally agree
I know right? Im fed up of using luma fusion for quick edits.
Yep. Having major regrets having switched from android...
@@mercedesescobarmusic Same here
I wish everyone made UA-cam videos this way, absolutely a perfect narrative, down to business and no beating around the bush!
Glad you noticed.
instagram and tiktok are perfect for sales. Horizontal videos was the only standard BEFORE instagram appeared.

This is the best way for sure
Does this method also preserve higher resolution results? I'd imagine so.

@@karibrasuka yeah neat workaround but also totally insane this is the "best" way to edit videos natively on the iphone 🫠
Thank you so much. This was easy to understand. No frills, no tech-talk, no nonsense, just a simple step-by-step.
hello i have a question doesnt it mess with the quality of the video
Yeah that was my thought, you're just removing something like 2/3 of the frame. I mean if you shoot in 4k and don't do any other crops it'll probably look ok on a phone, but it's not ideal.
It will pixelate the video a bit but then again it’s mobile video, so quality is a toss up
Thanks man. Great explanation, right to the point, no bs. One more time, thanks!!!

Awesome thanks!
I’m not getting the pinch to zoom tool when I select the clip to work with pictures in iMovie. Any suggestions!
With pictures, click to disable Ken Burns and then pinch to zoom on the video screen.

Looks great but I couldn’t figure out how to size the text properly that it’s not cut off from the frame after the editing. 🤔
iMovie doesn’t give you to many text resizing options. Trial and error
Thank you! IG took away the scale option on Reels. Hopefully this keeps my videos hi res as IG reduces and makes them Grainy
You’ll be better off editing with CapCut to ensure hi res
Hello on my iPad I don't see this possibility, is this normal ?
Greetings! Thanks for this video! How do we pinch to zoom on a picture? I’m not seeing the magnifying glass. Thanks
Tap the clip in the timeline to reveal the magnifying glass
OMG! You have no idea as to how much time you saved me by offering this in detail video explation on how to edit vertical videos on Imovie. Thanks a million!
iMovie been bugging me because couldn’t figure out to make shorts and TikTok’s on iMovie. Thanks for this! This help so much thanks!
I would recommend editing on TikTok’s native app called CapCut. It’s free for desktop and mobile. Many more features than iMovie
Thank you!! Greetings from Perú 🇵🇪
Thanks! What if you have a lot of videos? Do you have to pinch each one?
is there any loss of quality when you crop?
Hi yes there is loss of quality when you pinch. Try CapCut app - it’s free and has a vertical setting, no pinch required.
@@VideoZeusthanks! Can you add several videos at once? I find that lumafusion is so slow bc I have to add each video and there are like 30 in my list
@AlejandraSura absolutely capcut is the real deal. Available for mobile, desktop and online.
Really helpful, thanks. Saved me time on my school project

thanks heaps! are we loosing quality in the process? :0
incredible missing functionality this is hilariously xD
You’ll definitely loose some quality. Agreed iMovie needs to add that.
This is the definitely the only way to do it in iMovie. It's a shame we have to lose all that resolution.
This was so helpful and answered every question I had - thank you so much.
I’ve already done every single thing edit wise and all I needed was that little bit in the actual photo editor!! Peace and blessings bc I was not editing a video sideways 🙌🏾🙌🏾✨✨✨
Do I need to do this for each and every clip?
OMG….!!!! This info was sooooo simple and yet gold. Thanks BIG TIME ❤
Oh my gosh, you explained this perfectly! Thank you so much
I don’t have that magnifying glass on my app?
Thanks for making it so easy to understand and follow. Do you have a tutorial on adding music, like from a Spotify playlist? Thanks again, and keep up the great tutorial vibes!
I will look into it
How can you do this on your Mac? Preserving portrait? There seems to be no pinch option available also..
Create a new project in App mode
Is there a way for me to do this on iMovie on my desktop iMac?
When I use a photo the magnifier glas doesn’t t show when I select a fragment . It does show when I use a vertical video. So is it not possible to make a vertical video with pictures?
Not in iMovie. Give CapCut app a try, its free and can do a lot more than imovie
Thank you SO much for this easy to follow video!
This was SO HELPFUL!! Thank you
You’re welcome

Simple instructions, great video! Thank you!
Very helpful! 👍
Great video. was struggling with this for a while. Thanks so much
Thanks! So helpful ❤
How do you save it now? The only options are to export or share and sharing it and then saving it drastically reduces the video quality
Great tutorial 👍
That magnifying glass button is not there on my i movie
You're a wizard. Thank you!
I was looking for this.
Many thanks 👍

What is the length of the final video
@@VideoZeus under 60. I did 3 different ones. Range from 16 seconds to 57 seconds.
Have you cropped it to 9:16, last step in video?
@@VideoZeus yes
iMovie is strange most times. I would suggest trying CapCut app, free and native to edit vertical video.
Perfect tutorial. Thank you!

Great video except my iPhone not showing the magnifying glass 😅
Tap on the clip to reveal the glass
this vidio really helped thnx 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You’re most welcome
Question: Does the video lose quality, using this trick? Thanks :)
Super helpful, thanks! And like top comment, so true! I can't believe in this day and age apple has still been unable to fix this.. ridicilous
Thanks! Just what I needed
Great advice, why didn't I think of that LOL Easy hack but genius!
