Okay, story time on number 35. I was a young, naive exchange student, with maybe a month left in Japan while I was studying abroad. All was going pretty darn well that day. One of my classes was cancelled, and I had been up late the night before finishing an assignment, so marched my merry self back to my dormitory, was sending my daily photos to my friend in the US, and preparing to take a nap. Out of the corner of my eye came one of those mother flipping centipedes crawling around on my curtains, easily a foot long. Again, being the naive American I was, the biggest insect I'd personally witnessed at that point were locusts and wolf spiders. I shrieked and then, crying, proceeded to message my friend about the atrocity as if she could fly over at hyper speed to kill a bug for me. My Japanese was rudimentary at best, but there was no way I could sleep with that bug in my room, so I had two options: wait upward of four hours for my neighbor to return from class to either kill it or help me ask someone to kill it, which could give the demon ample time to hide until it could kill me in my sleep, or utilize the magical powers of Google Translate to attempt to get my dorm parents to help. Cue 20 minutes of me trying to explain to my dorm dad that there was a huge bug in my room that needed to die, partially based on us tip tapping words and phrases into cheap little flip phones and showing one another because we weren't sure if we were saying the word right (me with Japanese, him with English). Once he finally realized what I was saying he motioned to give me a little vacuum cleaner that A) couldn't sweep up something that big, and B) I'm such a cautious person in general I couldn't move fast enough to suck it up without it running away. Instead of risking such horrors, I lied and told him I was allergic xD Which he took super seriously and grabbed some heavy duty bug spray and a larger than life fly swatter, to join me on the epic quest of ridding my room of this bug. Needless to say he didn't get what I meant by "big bug" when I was telling him, because he was horrified too when he saw the thing! But within minutes the beast was finally dead. My neighbor later pointed out that my room was probably the perfect temperature for bugs to feel comfortable at, because while the rooms had AC I was perfectly used to my family and college dorms keeping buildings at a solid 80 degrees, so needless to say I spent my last month burrowed under blankets and in sweaters to make my room nonviable for life of any kind. And thus, the story of how I nearly died in Japan comes to a close .u.

The reason kitchen knives are sharper than katanas isn't due to a lack of sharpening methodology in katanas. It's due to the fact that a katana needs to be sharp _and_ flexible, so it doesn't break when cutting. A harder steel can hold a sharper edge, but a harder steel also is less flexible and breaks more easily. So katanas have to compromise between sharpness and flexibility. They're still plenty sharp though. (One way katanas accomplish this is through differential hardening.) Kitchen cutlery doesn't need to be as flexible as a katana because it isn't exposed to the same longitudinal stresses as a sword. You can pretty much focus on sharpness without worrying about flexibility. Thanks for the awesome video!
As you know, katanas also have areas of three distinct hardness levels as well as differential hardening for the needs of the sword - core, back, and edge.
Wow! Was totally waiting for the classic “Katanas are the best swords ev3r!!!!” But that was extremely informative and something I didn’t know. Thank you!
Konglim Khoo, that would affect individual swords, not katanas as a whole vs. knives as a whole. That was the claim Rachel made-- that kniveS can now be made sharper than katanaS, due to improvements in knife technology. 10:23 Plus you waaaay overstate the differences that would exist in "quality of the metal" among swords made by the same skilled swordsmith. My original point was that knives and swords serve different purposes, so they have different needs when it comes to attributes like sharpness and flexibility. Making a distinction between the sharpness of the two based upon the TECHNICAL ABILITY TO SHARPEN them is misleading at best.

Average Japanese person: Knows 6 different cicada species Average American person: Doesnt even know what continent we live on or How many states there are.
This is such an awesome bunch of facts! The cicadas here (just north of Dallas Texas) are so loud that you have to go inside to have a conversation this time a year.
Yeah, my family and I used to live in Dallas for many years. Our German friends and relatives couldn't get the sound out of their heads after hearing cicadas for the first time. My neighbour friends and I used to tie little firecrackers to the cicadas and set them off into the sky. Bang! Well, that was 1970s when things were different for the kids.
They're quite loud in Florida as well. You can easily hear them inside on a hot day. It's why when I first heard them in a anime during a summer scene, it felt so natural!
i just appreciate that persona 4 was used as an example of japanese media/games with summer cicada background noises. also, it was weird recognising the specific sounds of the different cicadas from different movies i've watched and games ive played.
I’m gonna move to japan some day and I’m gonna own like six of them just for self defense and to be cool I’m kidding about that last bit but my life goal is to move to japan and get two cats and learn Japanese and Korean! XD
right?? recently i visited and the sun rose at 4am and set at 7pm... it should just be pushed back an hour or two!

Sunrise and sunset is determined by date and which latitude, which is how far you are from the equator. So the sunset time in northern Hokkaido will be very different than it is in Okinawa.

THAT’S WHAT I SAID What did they do before gps?! haha To be fair, a lot of places have maps with the numbered regions posted somewhere so maybe people just used to use maps, same as we did back in the day. :p
Simon and Martina (Some other youtubers) mentioned this once in a podcast. They called somebody to pick them up, but Simon and Martina were waiting on one side of the block and the driver was on the other side of the block, and it took them a while to realize. I'm not sure if this was the cause, but it may have been. I'm sure it isn't a problem most of the time for locals, but I'm sure it has to come up
They started doing their podcast on youtube recently, but I think this was before that, when they only had it on SBS PopAsia. I think it was just within the past couple of months, but I don't remember exactly when. Definitely not too long ago. The overarching conversation had something to do with how Martina was saying she couldn't really stay mad at most people in Japan and how polite they are or something like that. This particular story she brought up to illustrate how the taxi driver was so apologetic afterwards even though it wasn't really his fault, and even though she was upset when she thought he was late as soon as he apologized she wasn't upset anymore.
I didn't know they did podcasts on SBS PopAsia :O Iwonder if it's still available. i'll look into it. Edit : it still is ! I now know what to do in my spare time.
Some of the facts Rachel seemed to be completely amazed by are totally normal for me as a Swede, like driving camps. And the sun rising at 4 in summer? Here is never even sets! xD
despairinq that's true. A train in Tokyo stops once a week. And the cause is suicide. Jump in front of the train. Like Mayuri. There are many office workers who commit suicide. The cause is too long working hours. The law stipulates that up to 40 hours per week, but most companies do not. This is just one of many problems in Japan.
We were actually initially planning on one of us throwing it at the other, but we ended up not having the time. I imagine it's not super fun, though. ( ゚д゚ )
Oh whoops I totally assumed this was about the paintballs. Didn’t check the timing. I’m guessing it’s about the buses now... oh my god Hahahahahahahaha
Wish you would have added a tiny bit more to no.8, i.e. the lack of street names. The block and number system also includes the age of the structure, with no. 1 of block X being the oldest or first address in that block. That is why the numbers within a block are sometimes very random in placement. So, the system is only spatially accurate to a point. There are several historic forces at play as to why this is so. Some of these include, most land previously under the control of a monarch or emperor, limited usable land, rapid and continuous rebuilding, frequent disasters or destruction, and even the level of literacy. The type of numbering system stems from and helps reinforce the mental map that a community uses.
dip.C you either know how thick the bread is sliced by that brand or judge by eye or buy unsliced bread. Usually in america all the prepacked loaves are the sameish slice size unless marked otherwise but artisanal breads tend to be the size that that specific bread was traditionally cut at. And sometimes its just whatever they want it cut at. My family buys mostly unsliced bread honestly, or we make our own. XD
6:25 hah! In scandinavia, the sun never really goes down in the middle of summer, especially if you're very north. On the flipside though, on the winters it's the opposite. The sun goes down at 3 p.m and goes up at 8-9 a.m. November, december is pretty depressing... Go to school/work it's dark, come home, it's dark.
There's much more than cute animals and pop culture icons. Each prefecture in Japan has its own mascot, so you'll see them materialised as construction barriers too (a good fact they missed). For example, Iwate's Sobacchi and Miyagi's Musubimaru!
@@rachelrecycles369 In such places people can adopt the times of an area further south in the country or many go by Saudi Arabian time. Otherwise northern Finland would only allow you half an hour to eat every day for the month of Ramadan
I love the sound of cicadas! We have tons of them here in Mississippi in the summer and it's the one redeeming part of the horrible heat and humidity. I love hearing cicadas in the background on Japanese shows.
This video is not only fascinating but also incredibly useful for me! I can use a lot of this information in my geography exams this year, particularly the info on the incompatible grids issue after the earthquake/tsunami and the ageing population. It'll be great to have rather "unique" details (in the sense that not many British 18 year olds know them) in my essays, thanks so much for this and I hope you make more of these! I learned a lot
Well to be honest a lot of foreigners think that, but in reality Japan is really late in many aspects. Sure, technology is more advanced than other countries, but for example the majority of Japanese people still use cash for payment instead of credit cards. I've lived in Japan for basically my whole life, but there are a lot of kids who cant even use a computer properly because the school system doesn't teach them.
Do you mean to tell me that Japanese are so physically clean that their have genes evolved to reflect this?!!! I would PAY to have dry earwax and a little less body odor.
n Unfortunately, the people that don’t have this gene TYPICALLY don’t use deodorant. Rush hour on a Japanese train in the summer can’t get pretty smelly. Then again I’m sure that’s everywhere you go haha
Zoe Kouf It may have been selected for via sexual selection. Some Europeans have the gene but maybe we didn't care enough for it to become widespread. There are things about Europeans Japanese wish they had and maybe it comes down to what we prioritised in mate selection. However it could also be related to other pressures or just random.
@@OneMoreGuyjininJapanTheir deodorants are designed for people with the nonsmelly genes IIRC. I moved there with an agency and they told us to bring our own deodorant from home.
Googled them, and they were a little smaller than I remembered, sorry. Still big enough to take up plenty of space in your palm, and my nightmares 😅 Search "asian giant hornet" if you're interested!
Well in some banks when they get robbed they put paint explosives in, so when the robbers open them they get doused in paint that doesn't wash off. But yeah, imagine how easy I'd be for the police to find a suspect running from the scene of a robbery when they have vibrant colour all over them!
The closest thing I can think of that we have in the US is, in some clothing stores, the clothes have a magnetic tag/clip thing on them that can only be removed at the register once you pay for them. Otherwise, if you try to remove it forcefully, it'll let out a bunch of ink, or dye that is hard to wash off As for convenience/grocery stores, there's just a bunch of cameras everywhere. Or, if the store can't afford enough cameras, they're placed in locations like at the entrance/exit, or right at the register
I visited Japan this August and I heard the Cicadas everywhere! I'd never heard anything like it before, originally I thought it was some sort of bird - really interesting sounds :D
Hahaha in France, the sound of cicadas is both associated with summer (and summer vacations) and with Southern France. Generally, even before you see the shot that will make you go all "oh yeah, Mediterranean coast", you know where the action is because of the cicadas! It's even a common ceramic decoration you can find outside houses in the South (next to a door or a window) - lizard/gecko ceramic decorations are also common. We also have the same thing with driver license, it's super expensive and you can count a month of lessons. One of the driving schools in my town is considered cheap because the base price is 945€ (and of course people generally need more driving lessons, so they end up paying a total of 1200€). However, it's possible to start learning to drive at 16, though you always have to be accompanied by an adult with a driver license, and register a minimum of kilometers per year to validate the certificate. It makes it easier to get a driver license in the long run (two of my cousins did that). We also have a sticker for apprentice drivers! It's a red 'A' in a white circle, and it's mandatory for two years after getting a driver license (if I remember well). Concerning the price for highways, it's way more expensive in Japan than in France! (well, unless you take some highways, which are more expensive than others) Last time I paid the tolls, I spent ~50€ for a Paris-Perpignan (roughly 900km). And we still have national roads that are toll-free (even though it'll take 14 hours for a Paris-Perpignan, while one can count ~10h for the same trip with the highway). Anyway, thanks for that video! It was very informative. :)
Thank you for your information on France! I’m from Canada and I love learning more about new countries. France sounds really fun and I’m even more excited to visit next summer!
Nice to hear france isn't the only country where learning to drive is so expensive. You can't drive with no adult in your car until you're 18, theory and practice are two different types of courses for which you have to pay separately, and it can take way more than a month to obtain your license... it usually costs at least 188616.62¥ (if you get it the first time you take the test, otherwise, the price just goes up up up ^^). Anyways, i love your videos, I've been a fan for a very long time now, and i love Japan! Thank you for posting great videos like this, love from France
7:27 i remember when i used to catch them with my friends. near my apartment there was a park, and during summer there would be a lot of them. so nostalgic, this was 5 years ago 😭😭😭

It's the same in Chicago!

I associate those cicada sounds with Animal Crossing.

what always bothered me in japan: the sun goes down wayyy to early…it gets dark at 6pm, even though its not even close to winter :(
This is probably my biggest complaint. I need more sunlight!
Those of us in the Midwest would be right at home. Sunrise is at 4:55am in the summer, and sunset is at 4pmish in the winter.
very similar to my country, 6pm IS SO DARK.
right?? recently i visited and the sun rose at 4am and set at 7pm... it should just be pushed back an hour or two!
Sunrise and sunset is determined by date and which latitude, which is how far you are from the equator. So the sunset time in northern Hokkaido will be very different than it is in Okinawa.

I'm sure it isn't a problem most of the time for locals, but I'm sure it has to come up
In which podcast?

Emily Barclay I was about to say that. Like I didn't even consider anywhere else would do it differently...
和輝Kazuki In Germany some super markets let you use a machine to slice whatever bread you like however thick you like :)
Fancy Hatching We have that in England as well.
What do they do in countries without this system? sell the bread unsliced?
dip.C you either know how thick the bread is sliced by that brand or judge by eye or buy unsliced bread. Usually in america all the prepacked loaves are the sameish slice size unless marked otherwise but artisanal breads tend to be the size that that specific bread was traditionally cut at. And sometimes its just whatever they want it cut at. My family buys mostly unsliced bread honestly, or we make our own. XD

Japan: Most People are old dependents.
Also Japan: Really fricking Advanced.
I don't like having dry earwax tbh. But I like not having much body odor or in my case body hair as well lol

Wow the paintball idea for the thieves should be used in other countries!
Well in some banks when they get robbed they put paint explosives in, so when the robbers open them they get doused in paint that doesn't wash off.
But yeah, imagine how easy I'd be for the police to find a suspect running from the scene of a robbery when they have vibrant colour all over them!
cant they bring a bag with clothes and change
Dan Catface // Prince Daniel they needs to run, not change clothes.
Measles European Chickenpox ...? Learn decent grammar
The closest thing I can think of that we have in the US is, in some clothing stores, the clothes have a magnetic tag/clip thing on them that can only be removed at the register once you pay for them. Otherwise, if you try to remove it forcefully, it'll let out a bunch of ink, or dye that is hard to wash off
As for convenience/grocery stores, there's just a bunch of cameras everywhere. Or, if the store can't afford enough cameras, they're placed in locations like at the entrance/exit, or right at the register
