How Real Is Fake News? | Sharyl Attkisson | TEDxUniversityofNevada

- Was the effort to focus America's attention on the idea of “fake news”-itself a propaganda effort? Connect the dots and learn who’s behind it and why. It’s not what you think. Sharyl Attkisson is a five-time Emmy Award winner and recipient of the Edward R. Murrow award for investigative reporting and author of two New York Times bestsellers: “The Smear” and “Stonewalled.” Attkisson hosts the Sunday national TV news program “Full Measure,” which focuses on investigative and accountability reporting. For thirty years, Attkisson was a correspondent and anchor at PBS, CNN and CBS News, where the Washington Post described her as "a persistent voice of news-media skepticism about the government's story.” She’s a fourth degree blackbelt in TaeKwonDo. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I'm surprised Ted Talks and youtube are leaving this up.
The harder they squeeze, the more truth will slip through the liberal's fingers.
Just because someone won't go to a far out place, doesn't mean they're what you say. You've taken a logical leap you have no way of proving.
Truth shall set us free. Deep down most people know Truth will save the species since ultimately the lies will destroy us. The people spreading the lies are too selfish to see past their own lust.
Yes, can i post that again lol!
Sherlock MacGyver agreed. She doesn’t need to “go” anywhere. Just the topic of the talk itself inspires skepticism. Great to the point speech.
Shockingly relevant these days. I am surprised this hasnt been taken down. God bless this woman.
why would they take this down were not living in a dystopic society, this isn't totalitarian. We're not in 1984 or Fahrenheit 451 so why would they take it town. TED talks are for information seriously
@@jarofjam6594 when you speak too hard truths on youtube, your videos can either get demonetized or removed for some BS reason
@@dzllz why would they remove this video. Also they remove explicit videos because no one uses UA-cam kids not educational stuff. Also UA-cam is not mentioned in this once nor is UA-cam owned by meta so there’s no reason to take it down
@@jarofjam6594 They are also known for removing non violating content. So, it might've been just some worker at UA-cam abusing their authority. There's been records for illegitimate takedowns. And yes, they also do remove violating content as well. It's just that sometimes or a certain period of times they could be illegitimately taken down.
But often this non violating content is not made by a respecting authority such as TED. Also while it may not directly violate the guidelines it can provide harmful opinions that people can formulate without doing proper research. In my opinion, if someone wants to propose an idea on the internet they must look at both sides of the argument and discuss with a factual explanation why their's holds more correct information.@@killertruth186
I like you. You make people develop their own opinion instead of telling them.
Also be wary of "authorities, experts, polls, (one-sided) graphs and statistics, unnamed sources, etc..."
Check every article you read for sources. If you cannot find a name of a person who stands behind a statement, don't believe it.
And then be willing to check on and read those sources. Destroyed a few "works" of people claiming so much falsehoods by taking one sentence or part of a paragraph out of context on their resources to prove the lies. Just takes some work and effort.
what the polls stand for propaganda only leaning left sided.
@@LG-km8fw you can always take a poll yourself.
"Truth is treason in an empire of lies"
Yeye
I watched a video of an old man who said that his dad taught him when he was a child : don't believe anything you hear and only believe half of what you see.
The problem with news is not so much that it fails to check facts, but that it tends to report only facts which support a narrative. The thought that you can receive "truth" from a news story sound byte is absolutely ridiculous!
Again the truth. Thank you.
Love her. One of the few people talking about the elephant in the room.
I'm very impressed with her presentation, this the kind of analysis we need
@Hello Jorge Torres, How are you doing?

Thankful there are still real journalists out there!
I am in love... She is the first person I have seen that really understands how our reality is controlled. Blew my mind when she described the manipulation of reality. I write on this extensively on my blog and have not seen anyone else talking about it... anywhere... It is far more than just big pharma though, think full spectrum dominance, and when they say full spectrum they mean it. You're amazing, keep up the good work!
She's right Trump never made up the term 'fake news' but he was the first one to make the public to be obsessed with such a damaging thought to among people who already believed in conspiracy theories. She too is not saying the entire information leading unto "fake news" as some people may categorize it.
I keep a Journal. Over the years, I have filled quite a few of them.On the first leaf of every one, I write what I believe is a statement that pertains to the theme at that time. The one I'm writing in now has this written on the inside leaf. " The destruction of a great nation, from within, can only be accomplished through a complete suspension of reality and truth"... Frankly, I believe it's safe to say that ALL news is politically motivated. Not just on the left or on the right. All of it. Just pick the lies you like best and believe them. This is how we are divided. Neighbors, families and friends are now set at odds by the divisiveness of political discourse. This can only result in anarchy and that will result in martial law. Jesus showed the way through. He ignored politics and only spoke the truth. No matter what the cost, and the cost was His life. Now, if we think before speaking, we will be part of the solution. Is it true? What do I really know? Is it any of my business?Am I judging or condemning, by what I say? Would I like to hear what I said, said to me?Ask these questions and their answers will lead us out of the quagmire. It's just that simple.
You are a brave woman. Bless you.
The public alone must decide what is fake. To that end we need to get out there and investigate ourselves, be nosy, cross the tape, ask for information for ourselves, not rely on the report in the media. Stop at an accident or incident and see what's going on. And demand a court case for accusations. Plea bargaining should be considered a level of failure of justice. We must do it ourselves until the media start realising we're not going to believe them until they improve their track record.
This gives me chills in 2020.
God bless Sharyl Atkinson. I remember when she was on CBS during the 1990s when she was my current age. Too bad all this happened.
Yeah, I always thought she was a real journalist. Like Brit Hume, she did a good job hiding her conservative bias.
In media literacy education, we are highly concerned about the field being co-opted after decades of hard work to encourage critical thinking and skepticism. Media literacy is about asking questions -- NOT having "the answers." Those who are presenting media literacy as telling people what to believe or how to believe or what is accurate or what is not accurate are NOT practicing or teaching media literacy according to best practices. PLEASE check out our website at the Center for Media Literacy to learn more -- and let others know that media literacy is about empowerment through education, so that wise choices, made by individuals and communities, are more possible. We believe in free speech and the marketplace of ideas! Those that don't -- don't know what media literacy is. We'd be happy to speak with Sharyl to discuss because we are well are that some people are misrepresenting media literacy and we who have long advocated for empowerment are in danger of being swamped. We must challenge mis-representation on ALL levels, and help provide all citizens skills of discernment.
Media literacy is about learning skills to discern propaganda. And yes, I am a strong advocate for learning these skills!
great presentation and very timely. Thanks Sharyl! and thanks to TEDx Univ. of Nevada.
Thank you for your valuable information
I want the news that we don't see, the real stories and not the packaged for the masses news.
It is time to retire the MSN, that way WE'RE rid of the fake news.
shes completely right follow the money. if their are financial ties to someone or a company that stand to profit from the information that makes the information more suspect. and i completely agree be careful when to many different sorces are useing the exact same words.
She is my hero.
why don't we address this type of news by it's proper name , " LIES "
...because she has the guts to tell the truth.
People need to trust their own gut.
I truly enjoy hearing the truth and the reality of everything we need more people to push this cut the cable hit them where it counts in the pocket God bless America
Very intersting Lady!
No one featured on TED will ever mention Twanna Brawley. Ever wonder why?
You need to do your own due diligence pertaining to any information before you believe in it. Information is propaganda because what's objective to other people is subjective to you, and what's objective to you is subjective to others until they believe the same way you do. It's confusing, but that's life in general. We all come with our own unique biases.
OMG! someone who sees things like I do!
Is this lady an animatron? Omg she’s doing an excellent job reading the TelePrompTer.
PTPOP, it's called technology. Imagine having note cards, but instead of holding them at a podium, they are projected on a screen, freeing up your hands and allowing you to look forward while you speak. Yeah, shame on her.
Jamband BillyD hence that’s why said TELEPROMPTER in my comment. She is fake and Insincere as most members of the CIA are.
That's delusional. Come on she has been in the news games for almost two decades now. She has reputation of stellar integrity. Just because you are not in agreement with her then you need to talk her down. The MSM is nothing but a public disinformation campaign washed on both sides. It leans heavily to the left right now but the tide will turn again to the other side soon enough. It is just a cycle. It is the rational person responsibility to do their own homework and figure out what is malarkey and what is not. Have an open mind. Closed minded people are blind.
Donald Trump called CNN's questions "Fake questions" back in the 90's
that was really great
WOW!!! Thank you for the history of the phrase.
Operation Mocking Bird: "We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." Former CIA Director William Casey.
Tough to find objective journalists these days. Our founding fathers thought free press to be important enough to be mentioned in the Bill of Rights. Those in the profession should take grater care so as to not loose it.
Very good talk Sharyl Attkisson.
Most of those in the profession _chose_ that profession so that they could distort information in an effort to install their own political views on the masses. It's no coincidence that 95% of journalists are far left-wing.
And they hated the Press too. You should look up what Thomas Jefferson said about the Press after he became President.
Why do you think she is objective? Give me a break! She is working for CNN, lol...
She left CNN 25 years ago.
It doesn't matter if it were 25 years ago or 2 years ago. She actually worked when CNN was religiously followed by many, many people, including myself. Luckily we have now the choice to listen to others... and I try to choose those who sound genuine and logical in their thinking process.
Well done, Sharyl.
Nice to know that true professionals still exist in journalism.
Thank you for your articles and your great books, "Stonewalled" and "The Smear" ."

An excellent and insightful journalist. Was spied on by the Obama administration, which shows how much they feared her honest, fair and hard hitting reporting.
MSM avoids her like the plague...ergo: go, Sharyl
Willydz59 she is currently in a multimillion dollar lawsuit that names people in the Obama Administration, as well as Verizon, and .........wait for it... the FBI for unlawful surveillance of a US citizen!!! It seems The Obama Attorney General (Loretta Lynch) violated FISA warrant protocol.....something called the Woods act, that declares that not one single unverified fact shall be included in a FISA warrant application, under penalty of law!!! ........sound familiar!! Hmmmmmm This is according to an interview I saw of her on another channel. If this is true why is it that the gop doesn't say something?? I believe her, I just wonder why the GOP is silent??
glass houses keep silent prisoners
I record her Full Measure show - which his on in the worst time slot .. Sunday's at 11am .. ain't no one home watching a show on Sunday's at 11am
Getting spied on by the obama administration is nothing.
This video needs at least 10 million views and not 10,000. I've been a fan of Sharyl Attkisson for quite a while and particularly since she brought the story of Fast and Furious gun-running to CBS News and forced the mainstream media to report on these crimes of the US government. If only our news media was composed of high quality professional journalists like Sharyl Attkisson.
Amen brother!
More ...chutzpah...than a boatload of soyboys...
Then retweet it to all your followers and ask them to do the same.
Liberty4Ever *Correction* the true number is 10 million and UA-cam deep six'd it.
People think that just because you work for a news org. that is now fake news that means all journalists are bad, they aren't. There are a loooot of good journalists out there trying to make their way.
Thanks for the history lesson, you rock Sheryl Atkinson
She completely skipped the fact that a series of polls in 2003 showed that over 60% of Fox News viewers believed Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11.
This is but one example of why Fox News has been known as Faux News since the turn of the century.
Faux is French for fake.
CNN; constantly spewing hate, over reaction and bitterness between groups, WHY?
Zinc Man same thing with FOX news, it’s sad
Because they have an agenda and because they make advertising dollars, and they're getting worse because they are dying out.
SAS yeah we should ban both Fox News and cnn
@@Alex-sy7wn That would be a violation of the Bill of Rights, Amendment 1. You can cancel them with your wallet/attention, but they cannot be "banned". Plus, Fox actually does a decent job with both their opinion and hard news coverage.
Why? Because Trump exposes the truth about all the malice doings the Democrats do on a daily basis.
Lady with integrity
Lady with a huge paycheck from Sinclair Broadcast Group.
Liberal twisting words and selecting 'facts' to suit her Marxist god.
we all have to eat! but seriously, what is your point? what she is saying is true.
+TREASURE GOBLIN. She accused both sides of politics of spewing out fake news. When everyone knows the overwhelming majority of fake news comes from the mainstream media (media arm of the Democrats) and the Democrats etc. She dances around the topic of fake news never reaching a conclusion. She talks about fake news perse not its purpose to lie and mislead the public into voting for the Democrats. As for your comments ? She's a liberal trying to redefine fake news itself as a blurred event connected to paid interests, who she neglects to mention (misdirection). Her goal is to steer the term 'fake news' away from the Democrat controlled mainstream media etc and into the horizon. Unfortunately the globalists control both Democrat & Republican while Trump seems to be more independent. Time will tell how just how independent he is or not.
Listen to the words in this video. She explicitly tells people to be wary of ALL media, and to think for yourself.
Sharyl is one of the very few credible investigative journalists left today.
You can Count them on one hand,
Sharyl, who works for the right-wing Sinclair Broadcast Group, which is currently engaged in buying up independent lacal news stations around the country.
Ive been trying to compile a list: Sharyl, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi....it starts rolling downhill after that.
Greenwald is particularly interesting (to me, at least). He started out as a defender of civil rights and a champion against the surveillance state, but over the past few years he has been increasingly leaning towards the "Julian Assange and Putin are heroes, and Wikileaks is the voice of God" attitude, and any contrary opinion is blasphemy. I have never followed Taibbi, so I can't comment on him.
Yeah. I'm not saying Greenwald gets it right every time. Just that hes brave enough to a be contrarian who forms his own opinions regardless of the consequences.
this was excellent. These TED Talks are generally viewed more by liberals so I'm not sure how many people in that crowd were too thrilled to hear that but she did a great job
The problem is that Trump fans believe Fake News and conspiracy. They believe anything that doesn't hate the left and spin things in a conservative light is "fake news" Everything Trump fans don't like including polls and general info is "fake" merely because they don't like it.
I wouldn't be too overjoyed. You have to take into the fact that she reports on news that is supposed to have journalistic standards. The right-wing pundits which seem to be the only people right-wingers think are "real news" aren't even considered because they're opinion entertainment and not journalists. The right hated Shep Smith which was the only actual "news" on Fox.
Jonathan Mosher most likely because their UA-cam channel and their radios talk shows keep reminding them every day that major media are fake news and how the left hate America and US constitution lol. So, basically they been brainwashing daily but they don’t know it. However, every day I listen to conservative radio station at where I live and the host keep attack the left daily lol.
@@vodoo3dx243 Right-wing pundits are profoundly more diabolical then left-wing pundits for the most part. The right-wing pundits use every propaganda method in the book. They start out with false equivalencies and base entire shows on that talking point. It's no wonder crazy people listen to their shows and start sending bombs and killing people.
@@jonathanmosher72 Ask Nick Sandmann about fake news, CNN is the first but not the last to pay for their 'honest' reporting.
Sharyl has a news program called Full Measure that exhibits the same integrity and insight she demonstrates in this Tedx Talk....wouldn't it be great if more people seeking quality journalism watched less of the 'mainstream media' and more of shows like hers? I have a dream...does anyone else?
My goodness! The schools are already so far left! Any further left and you will see glowing inspirational posters of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong on the walls. Oh, wait a minute. You see that now!
Watched this again after Sharyl suggested viewing it on her recent newsletter. Great talk then and great talk now!
I'm in love with Sharyl Attkisson -- and that's the truth. :)
I saw her first!
A great body. A shame its all poisoned by her regressive mind. No thanks.
mat. me thinks you missed her point completely! smh
*Andrew Baroch:* Yes, but if she's not in love with YOU, it's all over!! Just sayin'! ; P
She too smart for all you guys. I dated her in high school...had to dump her because she was too smart to raise my pigs and chickens back on the farm
Great Speech! Every Millennial should watch this video. Thanks Cheryl.
If it's over 3 minutes long good luck.
This woman is a REAL Journalist who is telling her story in a truly non partisan dialog.
Sure wish there were more of them like her....
This same process is being used as they "rewrite " our history books used in our public schools. Take some time to compare today's versions to the versions of the past. The true issue lies in the fact that we never presented history in an unbias manner. A great deal was left out, but, now, the other side steps in, rubs that in our face and then proceeds to write history the way they want us to remember it History can vary greatly depending on who is writing it. What, then, is being taught in our public scools?
The main stream media has direct access into every living room. The majority of people will not look for the truth, they settle for what the main stream tells them. It's the perfect gateway to the minds of the masses and such an easy way to push anything in anyway they wish.
They're called 4am drops. DVR all msm braoadcast, and see for yourself. They ALL use the same narratives, key words, and phrases.
Excellent! Thank you Ms. Attkisson for being a force for Truth and honest journalism in this time of the vast corruption of Big Media by biased elites.
I missed Sharyl when she disappeared from CNN long ago.
Post this video on your Facebook feed and see if it gets pulled down.
Share it with friends and family via email as well....expose them to real rational words from a journalist.
We the people ARE FED UP!!!
I was there live and had the pleasure of getting to meet her there ... If you want more info read her book "The Smear"
@Hello Randolph, How are you doing?
The problem with fake news is an easy fix.
Congress passes legislation requiring cable and satellite providers to allow customers to purchase only the channels they, the customers, want instead of the bundled packages they, the providers, require the customers to purchase -- in order to have the service. ( John McCain was working on this but it died on the vine! )
Currently I cannot choose NOT to have CNN, MSNBC, MTV, or Univision if I want a TV service. If I purchase cable, or satellite TV, I will be PAYING FOR THE CHANNELS I DETEST!
When are finally allowed to buy the channels we want, CNN, MSNBC, ect. will go out of business because very few people will want to pay for them!
Unless you are talking to your congressman about this issue, DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT FAKE NEWS! PASS IT ON.
Nope, your view numbers don't go up. HOw sad that youtube is so threatened by differing pov. smh Great video.
You're right, the view counter is not adjusting. I just watched and the view count is still at 94533.
Loved this:
"There are two ways to tell that powerful interests are trying to manipulate your opinion...
#1 When the media seems to be trying to shape or censor facts and opinions rather than report them.
#2 When so many in the media are reporting the same stories, promulgating the same narratives, relying on the same sources, even using the same phrases.
I mean, think of it, there are literally thousands of legitimate news stories that could be reported in a given day, and an infinite number of ways to report them. When everybody's on the same page, it might be the result of an organized campaign."
Wow... 'So well-stated!
Like these leftist organization that call themselves fact checkers when we all know they are all bias and never tell you the truth....
Much respect for Sharyl Attkisson.
Google must have missed this with their content filtering algorithm.
Donald Trump is awesome. That's my takeaway.
I understood that technical usage of the term arose from a news report with unsubstantiated sources which then get repeated endlessly by the MSM, giving it the appearance of fact.
I love how after watching this (which was a great video), everyone in the comments is like “fake CNN” or “fake Fox” lol and no one learned a thing...they all have elements of “fake news” people need to use discretion and common sense when listening to the news
This woman is a rare gem.
Sharyl Attikisson thank you very much for this. This needs to be standard viewing for young people that are being brainwashed.

Sharyl is one outstanding investigative reporter. I've been a fan of her since her early days on a Tampa News channel. She is an actual real News person.
We have the best media manipulation this world has ever seen. I've come close to being arrested for peaceful protest, and my own parents, who I've had a million rational discussions with and who align with me politically, think I'm the unfortunate result of russian propaganda. Good luck, I'm out.
This Lady is great! Just wondering where, when, and from what school and Master did she receive her 4th from? The content here is great, I'm just curious... I'm a 20 year practitioner of the Martial Arts, and respect them greatly. Great talk, Sharyl! Thumbs Up, BTW!!!
Example: Examples like the Altlanta Olympic or even the plane at Camp David are mistakes / errors, Not fake stories created delibarately to attack someone you dont like, big difference, the intent.
Great insight from a credible investigator. Why isn't youtube posting recent comments?
example: RUSSIAN COLLUSION !!!
Me, too! Everything I suspected was written in STONEWALLED!
Absolutely fantastic.

Have you heard of "The Last DJ"? Here we have "The Last Journalist".
Check out Lawrence Wright, he does great work too.
The last great reporter.
The term "media literacy" has been around since at least the 1990s, when I was a university student and it seemed everybody in my program was reading Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent.
Sharyl has always been interested in the truth, regardless of the implications. She is one of the few legitimate journalists around.
Well-done, Sharyl, as always.
EVERY news story I was a party to, when reported by the media, was wrong on so many facts, I wondered if they deliberately got it wrong. It was almost like that game you play when you are in grade school when the teacher tells a story to the first child, by the time it is finally told to the 20'th the story is so tortured, twisted & wrong the only problem is that "Adults" do this today when reporting the "news". Ask an elderly person what "journalists" and "news" men are known for/as. Its is not a kind view.
Mockingbird .
It's always important to have conversations about our media-heavy world and how bias can creep in both innocently and sometimes in organized ways. There's a serious problem in this talk, however, and that is a misrepresentation of what media literacy is (or is supposed to be). Media literacy is not a new term or field (has been around for decades), neither is it designed to do the thinking for you. It's quite the opposite. Media literacy in principle is about helping people (including children) be conscious, deliberate, thoughtful, careful (and even skeptical) media consumers and creators. Media literacy includes the kinds of skills I would expect an investigative journalist to be *celebrating,* not criticizing.
Yes, there will always be those who will try to jump on hot-button bandwagons to make a buck, but media literacy is not an anti-fake-news panacea. It's a solid framework (again, one that has been around for decades) of principles and practices that encourages people to build the skills necessary to look at different sides of issues, to trace ideas to their sources, to make their own judgments and decisions based on their own conscience and values, and to be part of the solution against things like fake news (and a whole host of other problems) rather than part of the problem. Again, imo, it should be the kind of thing an investigative journalist should celebrate, not undermine.
My hope is that people like Sharyl will do more homework on this. Learn more about the history of media literacy. Talk to people who have been in this space for years, decades -- before the internet was even a thing!
People like Sharyl could help media literacy be what it should be rather than assuming it is what they may be seeing in a reactive social, cultural, and political world. As a parent, the concepts of media literacy changed my parenting. As a nonprofit leader working to curate strong ideas out there to help parents, teachers, and other mentors help kids navigate their digital world, I see media literacy as one of the best philosophical frameworks that can help. As such, I was really disappointed to see how Sharyl ended her TED talk and hope she'll reach out to those who can help her understand more of what media literacy is all about. It's a powerful concept.
Bravo!
We don’t need media literacy the same way we don’t need doctors lawyers or engineers to go to school to get an education to be a professional. I think the idea of educating those in media to check facts and report in an unbiased way is a good idea. It plays better to an uneducated base to report sensational news rather than factual news. What she’s advocating is a kind of control though it is subtle enough you might not see it at first.
