  • Was the effort to focus America's attention on the idea of “fake news”-itself a propaganda effort? Connect the dots and learn who’s behind it and why. It’s not what you think. Sharyl Attkisson is a five-time Emmy Award winner and recipient of the Edward R. Murrow award for investigative reporting and author of two New York Times bestsellers: “The Smear” and “Stonewalled.” Attkisson hosts the Sunday national TV news program “Full Measure,” which focuses on investigative and accountability reporting. For thirty years, Attkisson was a correspondent and anchor at PBS, CNN and CBS News, where the Washington Post described her as "a persistent voice of news-media skepticism about the government's story.” She’s a fourth degree blackbelt in TaeKwonDo. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I keep a Journal. Over the years, I have filled quite a few of them.On the first leaf of every one, I write what I believe is a statement that pertains to the theme at that time. The one I'm writing in now has this written on the inside leaf. " The destruction of a great nation, from within, can only be accomplished through a complete suspension of reality and truth"... Frankly, I believe it's safe to say that ALL news is politically motivated. Not just on the left or on the right. All of it. Just pick the lies you like best and believe them. This is how we are divided. Neighbors, families and friends are now set at odds by the divisiveness of political discourse. This can only result in anarchy and that will result in martial law. Jesus showed the way through. He ignored politics and only spoke the truth. No matter what the cost, and the cost was His life. Now, if we think before speaking, we will be part of the solution. Is it true? What do I really know? Is it any of my business?Am I judging or condemning, by what I say? Would I like to hear what I said, said to me?Ask these questions and their answers will lead us out of the quagmire. It's just that simple.

The public alone must decide what is fake. To that end we need to get out there and investigate ourselves, be nosy, cross the tape, ask for information for ourselves, not rely on the report in the media. Stop at an accident or incident and see what's going on. And demand a court case for accusations. Plea bargaining should be considered a level of failure of justice. We must do it ourselves until the media start realising we're not going to believe them until they improve their track record.

In media literacy education, we are highly concerned about the field being co-opted after decades of hard work to encourage critical thinking and skepticism. Media literacy is about asking questions -- NOT having "the answers." Those who are presenting media literacy as telling people what to believe or how to believe or what is accurate or what is not accurate are NOT practicing or teaching media literacy according to best practices. PLEASE check out our website at the Center for Media Literacy to learn more -- and let others know that media literacy is about empowerment through education, so that wise choices, made by individuals and communities, are more possible. We believe in free speech and the marketplace of ideas! Those that don't -- don't know what media literacy is. We'd be happy to speak with Sharyl to discuss because we are well are that some people are misrepresenting media literacy and we who have long advocated for empowerment are in danger of being swamped. We must challenge mis-representation on ALL levels, and help provide all citizens skills of discernment.

You need to do your own due diligence pertaining to any information before you believe in it. Information is propaganda because what's objective to other people is subjective to you, and what's objective to you is subjective to others until they believe the same way you do. It's confusing, but that's life in general. We all come with our own unique biases.

When everyone knows the overwhelming majority of fake news comes from the mainstream media (media arm of the Democrats) and the Democrats etc. She dances around the topic of fake news never reaching a conclusion. She talks about fake news perse not its purpose to lie and mislead the public into voting for the Democrats. As for your comments ? She's a liberal trying to redefine fake news itself as a blurred event connected to paid interests, who she neglects to mention (misdirection). Her goal is to steer the term 'fake news' away from the Democrat controlled mainstream media etc and into the horizon. This same process is being used as they "rewrite " our history books used in our public schools. Take some time to compare today's versions to the versions of the past. The true issue lies in the fact that we never presented history in an unbias manner. A great deal was left out, but, now, the other side steps in, rubs that in our face and then proceeds to write history the way they want us to remember it History can vary greatly depending on who is writing it. What, then, is being taught in our public scools?

The main stream media has direct access into every living room. The majority of people will not look for the truth, they settle for what the main stream tells them. It's the perfect gateway to the minds of the masses and such an easy way to push anything in anyway they wish.

The problem with fake news is an easy fix.
Congress passes legislation requiring cable and satellite providers to allow customers to purchase only the channels they, the customers, want instead of the bundled packages they, the providers, require the customers to purchase -- in order to have the service. ( John McCain was working on this but it died on the vine! )
Currently I cannot choose NOT to have CNN, MSNBC, MTV, or Univision if I want a TV service. If I purchase cable, or satellite TV, I will be PAYING FOR THE CHANNELS I DETEST!
When are finally allowed to buy the channels we want, CNN, MSNBC, ect. will go out of business because very few people will want to pay for them!
Unless you are talking to your congressman about this issue, DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT FAKE NEWS! PASS IT ON.

    Loved this:
"There are two ways to tell that powerful interests are trying to manipulate your opinion...
#1 When the media seems to be trying to shape or censor facts and opinions rather than report them.
#2 When so many in the media are reporting the same stories, promulgating the same narratives, relying on the same sources, even using the same phrases.
I mean, think of it, there are literally thousands of legitimate news stories that could be reported in a given day, and an infinite number of ways to report them. When everybody's on the same page, it might be the result of an organized campaign."

EVERY news story I was a party to, when reported by the media, was wrong on so many facts, I wondered if they deliberately got it wrong. It was almost like that game you play when you are in grade school when the teacher tells a story to the first child, by the time it is finally told to the 20'th the story is so tortured, twisted & wrong the only problem is that "Adults" do this today when reporting the "news". Ask an elderly person what "journalists" and "news" men are known for/as. Its is not a kind view.

It's always important to have conversations about our media-heavy world and how bias can creep in both innocently and sometimes in organized ways. There's a serious problem in this talk, however, and that is a misrepresentation of what media literacy is (or is supposed to be). Media literacy is not a new term or field (has been around for decades), neither is it designed to do the thinking for you. It's quite the opposite. Media literacy in principle is about helping people (including children) be conscious, deliberate, thoughtful, careful (and even skeptical) media consumers and creators. Media literacy includes the kinds of skills I would expect an investigative journalist to be *celebrating,* not criticizing.
Yes, there will always be those who will try to jump on hot-button bandwagons to make a buck, but media literacy is not an anti-fake-news panacea. It's a solid framework (again, one that has been around for decades) of principles and practices that encourages people to build the skills necessary to look at different sides of issues, to trace ideas to their sources, to make their own judgments and decisions based on their own conscience and values, and to be part of the solution against things like fake news (and a whole host of other problems) rather than part of the problem. Again, imo, it should be the kind of thing an investigative journalist should celebrate, not undermine.
My hope is that people like Sharyl will do more homework on this. Learn more about the history of media literacy. Talk to people who have been in this space for years, decades -- before the internet was even a thing!
People like Sharyl could help media literacy be what it should be rather than assuming it is what they may be seeing in a reactive social, cultural, and political world. As a parent, the concepts of media literacy changed my parenting. As a nonprofit leader working to curate strong ideas out there to help parents, teachers, and other mentors help kids navigate their digital world, I see media literacy as one of the best philosophical frameworks that can help. As such, I was really disappointed to see how Sharyl ended her TED talk and hope she'll reach out to those who can help her understand more of what media literacy is all about. It's a powerful concept.

We don’t need media literacy the same way we don’t need doctors lawyers or engineers to go to school to get an education to be a professional. I think the idea of educating those in media to check facts and report in an unbiased way is a good idea. It plays better to an uneducated base to report sensational news rather than factual news. What she’s advocating is a kind of control though it is subtle enough you might not see it at first.
