Underfloor Heating - My House Build Pt:17
- House update video! Turn on the CC for captions. This episode will cover the floor insulation, underfloor heating and dry screed. I started with hydro insulation, a bitumen primer and then the bitumen sheating. After bitumen, we installed the thermal insulation with heating pipes on top of it. Everything was covered in dry screed as the final step. Much more details in video subtitles.

Surely a full-length presentation of all videos combined would do well at the box office. Nice to win an Oscar for best documentary. Then the rest of the world can be as entertained as most of us, your subscribers, continue to be.
This is such an incredible build. I bet it will be so cozy warm in winter with all that insulation in the floors. This will be the last standing house on earth probably 🤣
:) Yeah, I think I'm on a right track, a week ago, the temperature in the morning was -5°C and inside was 15° with no heating turned on for 2 weeks..
This house is going to be a fortified bunker dressed up as a nice home. I have never seen someone put so much effort in the details, just to be sure of things that could and might happen in the future. And I thought I was bad. Better safe then sorry. And it seems like you know who to ask for the particular jobs. I'm curious for the final home decoration and style.
I think when somebody is gonna fart in your house, the house is heated at least for a week! Well insulated!
Im impressed that you are able to pump that dry pack mortar.
The hose looked like a snake regurgitating it's last meal! 😄
A lot of dedication and attention to detail. It is going to be a beautiful house when it is done. 👍👍👍
Probably the most thoroughly built house in the world.
What does that even mean? lol
@@noiJadisCailleachprecision, foresight, and building beyond the code specs.
As a german, I am very proud of the Quality in our Buildings. But this much effort can't come someone up with, not working for his own. Nice job!
Indeed, have pro's for dry screeding your floor, noth worth the hassle and the mistakes you can make for the price they offer you.
Very well done, and you being a carpenter I suppose you come up with a solution to get the whole distributor with air vents in a nice cabinet.
This has all been so interesting. Your home is going to be so much more rewarding to live in because of all of the blood, sweat, tears, and love that you both have put into it. Thanks, as always, for sharing it all with us.
Old School plumbers are 100% correct! I had 3 attempts at getting my bathroom radiator to stop leaking with PTFE as I didn't have any hemp to hand. After rummaging in the shed I found hemp string on a sack of potatoes and applied that and it worked a treat!!!!🤓
Nice! Two months have passed here and so far no leaks detected.. I hope it stays this way!
Indeed, hemp combined with modern synthetic thread sealant works like a charm. Very useful when dealing with non-conical thread metal fittings, different materials and poorly manufactured fittings with loose tolerances.
Hemp is legendary
If you want a modern solution, Loctite PST.
it's indicated for use in petroleum refineries and chemical plants.
Withstands tremendous heat and pressure. Works fine with steam👍
RectorSeal T+2 works great too.
@@branchandfoundry560 IDK, do they have that in Europe?

i am your subscriber from philippines i am wating every part of your house build i like the house very much
we missed you
Thursday night treat! I guess it never registered with me that the floor was that much lower than the threshold of the doors until now, What a process and what an incredibly detailed floor! Thanks for keeping us posted :-)
Yes it took a few days after screeding to get accustomed to new zero height, especially after walking on it for two years:) Thank you for watching!
Leveling the floors in 2 days for the entire house really worth it. Looking forward for the completion
Yes it is! Some things are just better to be left to the pros.. I'm looking forward to it also!;)
Welcome back. I was anxiously waiting for another house update. Already can't wait for next video 😅
Coming soon! I don't have so much time to edit lately but I have footage for next two videos, still much to cover! Thank you for following the build:)
I just saw a screed pumping machine for the first time the other day here in Riga. I had no idea what it was for. Now I know.
Great video.
When I watch the day's latest videos in my subscriptions feed, I put Lignum's video(s) last, so the music can play in my head for a few hours afterwards.
The apprentice is back on the job! Always nice to see her contribution. And as others have said, that dry pack pumping was impressive. I was a little skeptical at first about a pump handling dry pack but, wow, it worked well.
Beautiful house. Lots of hard work, but over engineered at way more cost. 😮
Fantastic update. I was concerned I had missed your most recent video. I see the foreman is keeping a close eye on the process and helping out as usual.
I was waiting for this episode like 3 months :D
:) I plan to put out videos more often this year than last one.. hopefully..
@@lignumchannel I love your building videos :) Have watched every part more than twice. This house is gorgeous as well :)
I always get excited when I see this series pop up!
:) Thank you!
That is state of the Art my friend.👍
:) Thank you very much!

An amazing work! and go on
Bude to top, bravo!
The grey paint will enhance anything you decorate it with. Well done!
Nice 👌
My wife and I laid UFH all throughout our house on our own. Backbreaking work but we did it.
UFH is wonderful.
You’re building a lovely house
Cheers from 🇬🇧
That is awesome! Then we sure understand each others back pain;) Cheers from Croatia!

You are right! Thank you very much!
Coming out nicely.
Glad you like it!
I love seeing the interesting construction techniques used in other parts of the world. Outstanding series of videos!
Vrhunski ko inače💪💪💪
Hi 👋 , that was a great job, well done, well worth the effort, I live in a very old moulin in France, I wanted to put in underfloor heating, my ex, just wanted log burner, put in, I’m now thinking of undoing some of my work that I’ve done back in 2013 14, and now installing underfloor heating, Good luck with your project,
I never lived in a place with underfloor heating but anyone who I talked to said all the best things. i hope I wont be disappointed. Thank you for good wishes!:)
Looking so good so far, and that screeding was very satisfying to watch!
Yes it was! I wish I could be more with the guys but I was running around all day.. I'm glad I found these awesome professionals and I'm sure if I'l ever need screeding again, I'l hire them. Glad you like it Ellie! Thank you:)
Thank you so much for making these videos! I always turn on the CC and learn something every time!
And thank you for watching! I'm glad the subtitles come in handy!
looks good!
Thank you!
I wasn't too sure about the design of the building but i have to say now that it's actually built i love the whole thing, its definitely taking shape .
Also i take it that the whole process of what you are doing is to make sure you're new home is carbon neutral and with that as cheap as possible to heat etc 🤔. At first when I watched you pouring the bitumen on the floor i actually thought you might have gone mad but then realised that the intention was to seal the whole floor from any moisture coming up from below causing a damp problem. Great idea and honestly I wouldn't even have thought of it. Especially when we are more likely to see that product put on the roof of a shed or outbuilding. I recon it took alot of foreign people by surprise seeing you doing that 😅.
As alway's guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Yes it always surprises me when I read how the things are done in the other parts of the world. The plan is to use as little energy as possible and what I can see during this winter, things are better than expected. When days are sunny, I can work in short sleeves all day and night with outside temperatures going to -5°c or lower. South oriented glass wall was a bingo. This bitumen water barrier is a standard here and probably was for more than 50 years, I know my grandfather did the same thing but they had to melt it in a bucket on site and it was a very dangerous process. Now it's safer to apply it but the solvents will knock you out..XD Thank you very much for following Simon!
wow, well done as always. I'm excited to see how it performs during a cold winter. Looks so well insulated and the in floor heat layout looks great.
Thank you very much! Next winter will be a true test and I hope all the effort and insulation will be worth it..
Your knowledge and skill set is so impressive, you rarely need others to do the job. I guess it's hard to scam you when it's about construction :D
:D I learn a lot during construction.. For instance, half a year ago I knew almost nothing about underfloor heating..
Bravo!!!
Thank you:)
Nice.
Is this still going on? First video was 2yrs ago and it stopped at pt17 ... was following all videos ❤
more videos from this house please🤩
Loving it as always. Can't wait until you start making your own furniture... 😍 Or at least I hope so 😉
I'm waiting for that for two and a half years now:) Some are already done!
Music. that IS the best.
Glad you like the music choice for this one!:)
Pozdrav i velika pohvala prije svega! Uživam pratiti vaš napredak.
Zanima me što će vam pogoniti grijanje? Lijepi pozdrav
I absolutely love your videos. The amount of experience and skill is just breathtaking. Plus, it's been a while since I've seen anyone use a hemp and fermage/ferrrule (I hope I managed to translate it correctly) and if that isn't proof of honest and perfect work, I don't know what is. As always, thank you so much for another amazing video and fingers crossed that the work goes well and most importantly that you and your family are healthy.
Thank you very much for this nice comment and for all the best wishes!:) I'm glad you like my videos!
Grandios!
Thank you very much Werner!

Thank you!:)
I put underfloor heating in the woodshop I built last year. It is so comfortable and very efficient. You ran your loops really close together - definitely won't have any cold spots!
Yes I hope I will have the same experience.. Depending on the area and screed thickness, I spaced the pipes from 10 to 15 cm apart.
@@lignumchannel That'll work great. My loops are 12 inches apart which is twice the distance you have. You definitely won't have any cold spots because I don't with my spacing.
Subbed.
Hemp is useful is so many ways 😉😉
So many uses!:)
From earlier videos it looks like you already casted a concrete slab? Why didnt you put all isolation under the concrete slab and put the floor heating in the concreteslab you castedbefore you started with the walls? Seams like dubbelwork to me? Or is this the way you do it in your country?
@9:00 - I see the introduction of a cable spool; did you not fancy continuing to fight with 100m of pipe by hand? 😆
Seeing all the extra insulation you're putting in, I assume you're aiming for quite a high energy efficiency target?
Fantastičan rad!
Od gledanja me bole leđa, a ja još krov nisam napravio, estrih će biti veselica 😂
Vaša kuća je sve bliže useljenju! Ili već živite unutra? Lijepi pozdrav iz Istre 😊
Hvala! Još malo i unutra smo.. Cekam da prođe taj tehnički da konačno skinem brigu s leđa.. Pozdrav iz Svete Nedelje!
Serbia is a tough place, well done
It is croatia, not serbia

Why waterproofing the floor with black membrane? What thickness is the insulation?
superb effort all round - where in the world are you ? it clearly gets pretty cold going on your efforts with insulation etc
Croatia, yeah winters can be pretty cold, although each year less and less..
fabulous build @@lignumchannel

why you didnt went over the wall with waterproofing felt? and whats the point of spraying the pu foam/glue between the styro and thin foil? im really curious
I tried to explain as much as I could in the subtitles. You can turn them on by clicking the CC icon. Thank you very much for watching🙂!
Can I get your plans when it comes time for me to build a house?
Imas li iskustva sa dvokomponentnim tekucim bitumenskim hidroizolacijama ? Moze li ona posluziti umjesto klasicne ljepenke ?
hello good evening, I was wondering why you lay the bituminous sheath on the concrete
To prevent any capillary moisture from rising. I insulated the outside of the foundations as best as I could but there is still a chance for some water to climb from the bottom of the foundations, that's why there is a hydro insulating barrier between all the walls and the slab, and also now between the slab and all the layers that come on top of it.
please anyone tell me why they put all those pipes in the floor

Yes , I have put it under pressure to test it and it was under pressure while screeding. If you want, you can turn on the CC for English subtitles where I explain things in a video..
What if a hose breaks?
Talk about measure twice, cut once. You will never have to tear up that floor to fix a thing. Probably ever.
Mislim da su meni bitumen i kondor bili omiljeni dio kad smo kucu gradili 😂😂😂
@@lignumchannel isplati se uloziti na startu 😊 bravo 👏

Some parts bit slower and with comments would be awesome!
I'l try to go slower in the next video. If you want, you can turn on the CC for subtitles where I tried to explain as much as I could.
@@lignumchannel I really like your videos, and your work btw! I think it would add even more value to do some parts slower, to really understand the difficulties or skills you encounter.
She is the hottest construction worker I've ever seen on the job.
nicely done. differently in details: for example in my house they added fibre to the screed instead of the rebar, and the water pipes were stapled to the insulation.
Question: Why no hydro insulation under the stairs, so there might be water vapor coming up. I thought the water barrier must be one piece.
Cheers
If you watch closely you can see that there is a gray layer underneath the bricks. I'm sorry but that scene was shot with a cellphone cos I forgot my camera that day so quality is not the greatest.. Anyway, that is sika polymer cement hydro insulation coating. The bitumen sheets are connected with that coating so there is no break in the barrier. I will insulate the area underneath the staircase later on with bitumen and also drainage waterproof foil. This area will be indoor garden and the soil will be flush with surrounding flooring.
@@lignumchannel very good. I thought something like that.
@@lignumchannel "This area will be indoor garden and the soil will be flush with surrounding flooring" Wow! That will be very beatiful in that space as big and tall as it is, + plenty of light!
Can you not get concrete trucks to bring the concrete? Also, how long has the house taken? Are you done with it already and releasing videos delayed?
Love it as always!
This is pretty dry mix, concrete would be too wet to finish it that easily. Pretty common in EU to do sand-cement floors
This is a mix that has very little water and needs specialized mixer like this one in a video. It is usually done this way here. The house is ready for technical inspection at this moment but I have so much work that I'm forced to edit with a little bit of delay.. But being ready for inspection doesn't make it completely finished though, so more videos are yet to be filmed..

:) Yes , well said
For a channel that prides itself on beautiful wood projects, it’s a shame your own house is so unenviromental! Loads of concrete, plastics and oil-based products; a missed opportunity to show off what could be made from your glulam wood.
He did say in his earlier videos that they changed their plans due to unexpected high wood prices ...
Unfortunately invasion of Ukraine and jump in glulam prices of more than 150% forced me to change the building structure to more classical (affordable) method. Original design was glulam and visible concrete so I share your opinion. In my defense, I tried to insulate the house to bring the future energy consumption down to a minimum.
🎉🎉
I'm sure someone has asked this before, but are all of these techniques part of the building code for that area or more of a "I can do this, so I will"? This build has been a pleasure to watch, such inspiring craftsmanship 🤌
This is a classic building technique in this area and most houses are built similarly but some things I wanted to do better. I wanted a few things extra during the build like insulating the foundations, a bit extra insulation in the roof, better bricks with better thermal and seismic properties etc.. Thank you very much for watching!:)
@@lignumchannel Thanks for the reply! It's such a stark contrast to how we build homes in the southern hemisphere. We could definitely adopt some of these techniques to increase longevity. I've shared this series with my wife who is a building surveyor, and I hope she enjoys it as much as I do! Thanks again :)
