Tiny but Powerful - Building a Custom 23" Short- Scale Bass From Scratch

- After all those "I wish your videos were longer" comments, I decided to make a half an hour video. Also something you haven't seen before, not a single frame in this video is speed up. Everything is 100% the same speed as it was done. This gives more of the chance to see finer details and a closer idea of the time it takes to finish a project like this. As for the instrument, my brother drew the shape, and the design waited for the right customer for over a year. This one will find it's home in California. The wood we used for this project is
Padouk for the neck with maple veneer in between the slats, and oak wood for the body. Riviera single headless head pieces hold the strings at the head and Riviera headless single bridges tension them at the body. We chose Delano SONAR 2 buffer paired with THE EXTENDER 5HE/S pickup for this build. Schaller S-locks hold the straps. Fret-board is oiled and the body is sprayed in two coats of matte varnish. We tried something new for the fret markers this time, LEDs light them up! For more details about the build, turn on the CC for captions. I hope you enjoyed this a bit longer video than usual. Thank you for watching! If you liked this video, don't forget to press that thumb up icon and subscribe for more! :D

Absolutely gorgeous bass. Love your hours and hours of hands on and CNC wizardry. Lots of features, compressed fit back plate, zero frets, led fingerboard, and lots more. Sounds fabulously epic for such a tiny bass. Can’t wait to play it. Thanks guys for your hard work.
Those are some great old tools you've got in your shop, bet they'll last for another 100 years
Gorgeous instrument & I absolutely love attention to fine detail
Beautiful! Hope the house is going well too and you’re not too cold!
That is an "adorable" little instrument! Bravao. And I appreciate learning your technique, too.
Thank you very much!😁 i appreciate you watching my videos!
Very fine work!
This is extraordinary craftsmanship. Some of the design choices aren’t to my personal taste but the overall execution is phenomenal. Great job!
Amazing... that the only word to describe what I've just seen.
Tidy.....!
Thank you.
Jerry in Everett Ontario Canada.
One sweet bass, like the streamlined of the neck!!
Cracking wee base 👍
A wild knot appeared, gotta catch em all! Amazing instrument as always.
:D thank you very much!
Cute instrument 😊
Have to say that I quite liked hearing the natural noises of the workshop. I guess you probably can only do that when everyone else is out (or on very good behaviour)? 😉
Cool! It reminds me of Stanley Clark’s piccolo basses. I would probably go with a high C from a 6 string set instead of the low b for the fifth string. It’ll be hard getting enough tension on there for the scale length!
It's reminds me of Philip Kubicki bass. Awesome!
i am waiting for the final video of the house ... nice job ... greetings ... since Mexico
Loooove watching your videos!! What a cool, little instrument
Thank you very much!😁
Beautiful..🤗
Love the body shape. Would like to see this on a full scale bass.

Check out Le Fay Pangton,a big Inspiration for this maybe, build for over 30 jears, by the way, cute little critter this time 😅
Grandios! 👍👍👍
Nice bass! I miss the days when i had access to a cnc machine 😞
I really enjoyed watching the process and the tools used in that shop! Yeah, I can't lie, I'd love a shop like that! That arm saw looks like it could rule on Battle Bots! Hahaha
Really great shop!
Very impressed with all of it, except for the bass though, I'm sorry to say. But that's just my own preference, I wont offer more than that.
I always say instruments are like tattoos and girlfriends, as long as you like it and they inspires you to be your best, then good for you!!!
Beautiful choice of woods and attention to details was spot on all through to process, brilliant.
I'd love for you to make a bass for me if I had the money.
Thanks for posting this. This was time well spent for me today, very inspirational!
🤘💀🤘
Loved the video. Really enjoyed the long content. Nice work as always.
I wish you would have shown how to tune it. Do you have to use a hex key?
Really Good Design and Gond Sound❣️🌏I'm Not feel a Short Scale ❣️🌎Amazing Your Good Sense❣️🌍from Japan
Great video...if only it wasn't so long!
Just kidding. Thanks again, I'm building my first bass and have been studying your material intensively.
:)) You got me there! Thank you very much and I'm glad you find my videos useful!
Nice build, it looks gorgeous! And fantastic editing, as always. One question on your nut design, I haven't seen that yet: why that initial zero fret instead of setting the string height with the nut? Are you aiming for more sound consistency between open and fretted strings? And how did you achieve that the zero fret was higher than all the other frets?
Epico saludos desde Uruguay
Thanks! Greetings from Croatia😁
What bridge have you used there? That's a really elegant looking headless tuning system. How easy is it to tune with the string tension at that scale length? That's a really nice instrument, well done!
Love the bass. It would be great for travel, particularly in comparison with say a 4 string Traveler bass. How is the B string not floppy though? What type of strings are you using? I custom built my 30 inch scale 5 string and the B string is borderline in terms of tension. I am just curious how this bass does not have a ton of rattle in the lower strings. Hats off to you for a great build.
And I thought that shielding the electronics cavities with aluminium tape was bungler... But if a prestigious builder like Lignus does it that way... maybe I'm not so wrong...
Looks great. There is some fret buzz on the neck. Are there a few high frets? Did you check with a fret rocker?
Thank you! I'm glad you like the looks🙂 As for the buzz, that's just how my brother likes to set up his instruments, the strings are extremely low, something easily adjusted to anyone's taste.
Exelente, solo hay que subir el puente porque se siente que algunas cuerdas trastean....
Beautiful as always. What CAD/CAM software do you use?
Thank you!🙂 for the cnc we use rhinoceros with rhinocam. For the robot we use irbcam as an additional software for generating kuka code.
Love this build, absolutely delicious
ahhh i see now in the description. Riviera
I wonder if a multiscale neck would have helped tighten up the sound of the lower strings
The final version of this will have Dogal strings on it. It’s specifically made for basses of this scale. It would sound like a normal full scale bass.
So if the LEDs should break or be damaged accidentally, does the finger board have to be heated and removed?
Do you guys wind your own pickups?
Any chance this bass would befor sell ?
You really need a tuner
What sexy Bass!! WOW!
Hey great job! does it use regular strings? gauge? Thanks
I am glad you like it.
Yes, it uses regular gauges, and the best part is that it can be tuned to BEADG or EADGC with same strings (and any tuning in between)
Short Scale = Thicker strings for balanced tension and intonation.
Beautiful. Why is there a ring spanner hanging from the drillbit?
Thank you. 🙂 It's an easy way to see if the drill is level, if it moves to the drill, you need to lift up a drill. If it moves toward the work piece, you need to lower the drill.
That’s something I’m going to do from now on. Never saw that before
That’s an awesome idea, imma steal it
Well I never. You learn something new every day (or you should try to). Thank you.
Just curious, after all of the instruments you guys have built, do you ever sell them.
This is my third bass. Love them!❤
Lovely, but to me natural wood color looked much better.
pretty, but what's up with the wonky intonation?
I am glad you like the build.
The instrument is not out of tune by itself, but actually it requires a bit more skill to play than regular basses. With this scale you can bend the notes for 4 half steps without any problem, and with that in mind, the smallest bend makes the noticeable difference in the pitch. When you combine that with my below average bass playing skills, you get a bit out of tune demo. When played by better musician, it sounds incomparably better. :)
how much for a 32 inch iour string?
🤗
Very nice!!
Where is the classic music?😢
Thank you! I'm sorry but I'm afraid you will have to wait for the next video for the classic music.. I tried to do something new with this video, no speed up frames combined with real noises.
Tá trastejando mais que violão tonante velho😂
Have #CharlesBerthoud tap on it!!!
post more project videos
Do you only use hot glue to fasten the workpiece?
It depends on each project. If we have multiple pieces of the same model at once, we set up the clamps or the vacuum for quick exchange. For unique or pieces we mostly use the hot glue.
@@lignumchannel I'm amazed that the glue is enough 😄
Nice, bass, but it's out of tune. Intonation is way off.
It's out of tune. But looks awesome. Expect the pickup. That looks really out of place.
Don't blame the bass, blame the player😅 This was the first time my bro played an ending for the video and with a such a small scale, the slightest bend changes the pitch, a pro would do a better job for sure but still I'm amazed what he managed to pull out of it.
I think that due to the shorter scale length this instrument is sensitive to accidental string bending, and looking closely it seems that just that is happening.
Needs precise fingering to get the tone right.
Like everything else in smaller scale, just have to get it dial in.
Tú sí que estás fuera de tono, mascachapas!!! Precioso trabajo copón!!!
Great guitar and great build however I would say it's more of a 'programmer and cnc" build. Little if no actual carpentry skills used. The 'finishing" fantastic as always. Design great as ever. Keep up the great work. PS. Would love another video of the house build.
You could say that, time is the biggest advantage of using modern equipment and this way we can assure our models stay in the affordable price range. Next house video is ready for editing and I plan to start next week, I would love to upload it two weeks from now, that would be the first time with such a small time spacing between videos after many years of me being on you-tube.. Hope you will like it!
Thank you for your reply. I was not criticizing the fact that you did much of the work on the cnc. After all the cnc has to be programmed and that in itself is a skill. I commented about the lack of hand work simply because having seen many of your videos in the past, I know you have such skills. My comment was in no way meant to offend however if I did, I apologize. The fact that time is valuable, I fully understand and thank you for finding the time to make and post such videos. The quality of your products is second to none. PS. All the best for the new year. @@lignumchannel
First!!
Almost😁

Всетаки мензура у бас-гитары не спроста такая длинная. Здесь явно не хватает длинны струны, струна натянута плохо и потому такой грязный звук.
не строит
What a shame. After producing such an informative video of the build, which showcases your craft, the bass was out of tune for the demo.
I am glad you like the build.

@@gustavgabrek3047 That's useful to know. Thank you.
Der Schwachsinn kennt keine Grenzen…
гитара не строит. Звучит угрюмо. Много лишних призвуков, дребезг. Все very BAD!!!!!!!
sounds like crap
Everything was going well until he started playing with fingerpicking like on a classical guitar, but on a bass guitar. I'm sorry, but this is beyond the realms of good and evil. It's just shameful. Playing a bass guitar in that manner at the end of the video is a disgrace to bassists everywhere. Please, let's keep some dignity and respect for the instrument. 🤦♂
#Disappointed
