      There are other IRL songs using the same melody as well (“John Brown’s Body”, “Blood on the Risers”, among others). But I think, in-universe, Mordin would probably have heard it as “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, since that seems to be the most well-known version.

    "From Protein we are Formed" is based off of the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
    EDIT: Alright, I am well aware that several songs share the tune including, but not limited to John Brown's Body (of which the Battle Hymn of the Republic is directly derived from), Blood on the Raisers, the EDF Deploys, the War Chant of Mars (all of which I'm almost certain derive from the Battle Hymn of the Republic), and possibly (probably) Solidarity Forever (of which I don't feel inclined to look up at the moment to determine where it sits in relation to the Battle Hymn of the Republic). I used the Battle Hymn of the Republic on account of it being the most recognizable to a modern (1990's - present) American such as myself. The tendency for songs to share tunes is not unique here, I just don't really see the need to specify that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" also shares a tune with "The ABC song" and "Ah vous dirai-je Maman" or that "The Ants go Marching one by one" also shares a tune with "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"...let alone a potential quagmire like "Over the Hills and Far Away" sharing a tune and name with a dozen other songs with different lyrics.

    • @Matt20264
      @Matt20264 9 років тому +31

      I think it's even worse than that. I think it's a foreshadow to his death along with others in the pursuit of a greater cause. Weirded still, amazing grace came from the composer's experience where he was in a very deadly, horrible storm at which point he called for gods mercy. He went on to survive that storm inspiring the hymn. He felt so amazingly graced. Mordin sings it but ends it with 'perhaps another time'. They all faced the reapers (a horrible storm). In the end, however, he wasn't graced with life, his time was up, just like Shepard's. 'Perhaps another time' they'll all live (the new main characters in mass effect: andromeda?). Thank you for the feels trip Mordin.

    • @KBABZ
      @KBABZ  9 років тому +10

      Matt20264 I wouldn't call it foreshadowing considering you can only hear this song after Tuchanka!

    • @Matt20264
      @Matt20264 9 років тому +5

      KBABZ Well, sad story i never got to play this DLC since the file was corrupt on my Xbox. Recently, I got it on my computer so I'll get to it soon. In light of this however, (and I thank you for the correction) my analysis stands. We found his song after the fact but like MLK Jr. he foreshadowed his own death (Mordin just didn't write his own eulogy per se, however, Amazing Grace is classically sung at funerals so there's that). Moreover, if you somehow managed to get the game after Citadel, then you could still say this is foreshadowing for Shepard considering he sacrifices himself for 1 of 3 options. So a better way to put this is, Mordin foreshadowed his death but for us it was after the fact, but he also foreshadowed what was to come.

    • @KBABZ
      @KBABZ  9 років тому +9

      Matt20264 Aw, that sucks! The Citadel DLC I think is the best one. Mordin does in fact think the Tuchanka mission may be "...problematic", so he records various voice clips that STG deliver to Shepard after his/her party is over. Basically everything from Cell Division onwards is on the datapad, in addition to some clips like a Radio Noir clip on Omega and a segment he did on Perry the Pyjak. Definitely worth listening to!
      The Datapad obviously won't show up if you got Padok Wiks instead, nor if you managed to keep Mordin alive (only possible if Eve is dead and Wreav is the Urdnot leader).

      To be fair, we don't actually know where the melody originally came from. The Battle Hymn of the Republic wasn't the first time it was used. "John Brown's Body" predates it, for example. The first known version being "Canaan's Happy Shore".
      Though it's also likely, that Mordin's sing was based on the Battle Hymn, it is by far the most popular song.

    Mordin is an interesting character in the series. He once served with the Special Tasks Group for a time, he lead a team which developed the Genophage - wait, no not developed, modified the Genophage is more accurate, he left the STG and opened a clinic on Omega. He was soon recruited by Shepard to fight the Collectors while discovering that his own student was looking to cure the Genophage out of guilt. Data saved, student dealt with and Collectors destroyed, he returned to work. Reapers attack, Turians need Krogan to pull them out of the fire, Krogan need Genophage Cure, Mordin used the data to synthesize a cure with the blood of a cured female Krogan.
    Whether or not, Shepard warned Wrex, Mordin would suspect that STG would have a trick to prevent the cure release. Even with the Shroud falling apart, he knew that he won't come back, for it's his project, his cure, his responsibility. He had to be the one who would cure the Genophage.
    Someone else would have gotten it wrong.

  • @jaymessting1474
    @jaymessting1474 11 років тому +3

    Amazing Grace... I imagine him singing it shortly after the Genophage was dispersed. Sitting there, with his Carnifex raised to his temple, singing lightly, ready to go into deep sleep that he'd sent so many others. And then, at the final second, he lowered his gun, and became the Mordin Solus I was proud to call my friend.

    • @KBABZ
      @KBABZ  11 років тому

      A few continuity problems with that; the Genophage was dispersed in 710CE, 1,473 years before the events of the first Mass Effect, so humanity wouldn't have been around for Mordin to have known the song, and given that Salarians only live for around 40 years (Mordin says he's in his last decade in ME2) it would have been far too long ago for Mordin to have been alive at the time.
      However, he could have sung it after updating the Genophage virus.

    • @Opgestaan100
      @Opgestaan100 11 років тому +1

      KBABZ Mordin modified genophage, not created it, so there is nothing illogical. Just listen to him with more attention in ME 2 :)
