Black Powder Battle Report - 02 (Farmhouse Assault)

- Another battle report for Black Powder, this time based on the excellent La Haye Sainte collectors set. This game represents the final push on the farmhouse during the Battle of Waterloo. The Kings German Legion have been holding out all day but the French renew their attack with overwhelming numbers. Can the defenders hold out long enough...?
For some reason i kept including the status of the unit being shaken when calculating the modification to the morale save. This does not confer an additional -1 to the morale check.
Hope you all enjoy

Really loving the series, and I’m learning with Hayley. Wish I’d actually played BP before now. Thank you Martin
Thanks so much, she went from learning to teaching me a lesson very quickly 😁
Wonderful to watch - Great way to start the week - Thank you.
Glad you liked it 👍
Thank you for enjoy us all with this great battle Report! To sit down with a cup of coffee/tee and watch this is just great! 👍☕
Well done, thank you!
Thats great to hear 👍😀 thanks very much. There will be more
A truly wonderfully fun game to watch, You've clearly studied at the same school of dice rolling as I have while Haley was out in the garden moon light crying "SIX. . SIX . .SIX" to the goddess of pips. On the other hand any couple that can enjoy that level of gaming is a great thing. Lovely model of La Haye Saint, hadn't realized it could be used on a smaller table as you've done. Thank you guys so much for all the smiles & inspiration you've given in these grim times.
That's really great to hear, thanks very much 😀👍 were enjoying them, though her freaky ability with the dice is somewhat disconcerting. Will be having another game soon
Your very welcome, glad to know we are making people smile in such difficult times x
Great! This and your former Battle Report are the only ones I ever watched completey so far. Keep it up please, its a lot of fun!
Thats high praise 👍😀 thanks very much really glad you enjoyed them, have an idea for the next
Tis cool seeing black powder played with a relatively small amount of units. It gives me hope:). Well done.
Cheers 👍😀 normally id have loads more but haven't got the room
@@7thson726 I like to play black powder in 10mm for that reason... suddenly my dining table can be a huge battlefield.
@@Caradepato that's a great thing about smaller scales 👍
Pull yourself together man!! 2-0, unless you win one soon, you'll never hear the end of it!! Great watching though whilst I am 'working from home'!!
Haha I'll try for the next one, not alot i can do against such unbelievable break tests 😅👍 glad you enjoyed it
He wants me to play again, not sure I can put him through it a 3rd time 🤣🤣
Enjoyed once again. So fun watching you guys go at it with some fine terrain and miniatures.
Thanks very much 👍😀 i may have created a monster haha
Super job. Thanks for entertaining us!
The pleasure was all mine 😂
Thanks very much 👍 glad you enjoyed it
Really great battle mate. I always wanted to see someone play this battle.
Cheers mate 😀👍 this set is what got me into napoleonics, thought it was about time i gave it another go
I don’t normally watch battle reports, but having recently subscribed I thought I would take a look and am glad I did. Thanks for a really entertaining video. It was very well presented with the time lapse sections keeping the momentum going and the table looked very nice too.
My wife is very supportive of my hobby and is happy to attend wargames shows and battlefield tours, but I haven’t managed to persuade her to actually game.
You both looked like you were enjoying the game and I’ll be sure to check out your other battle reports.
Cheers.
Hi there, thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. We genuinely had a great time playing. My wife enjoys the games when we get the time to play them. I'm really pleased to hear you like the format, it's something I've tried to remain consistent with in my battle reports. Unfortunately it's not always possible with alternate activation systems 😁
Love the paint jobs and the terrain! Very inspiring, keep them coming!
Will do, thanks very much 👍😀
Great battle report, lovely miniatures and terrain. You both are certainly having a lot of fun playing the game 😁👍
Thanks very much, was a great game, its nice to get all the buildings out 👍😀
It seemed to match the original outcome. Basically carnage. The wife talking smack! You must win the next game......
Whats worse is that if it had gone on one more turn the KGL would have recieved 3 Hanoverian battalions to reinforce them 😅
Will definitely be looking for payback, will come up with an interesting scenario 👍
@@7thson726 a whole brigade, that's a lot of reinforcements.
Another fantastic vid, very cinematic. Inspired to start painting the minis from the Warlord 'Waterloo' starter set, i bought years ago. pls keep these bat reps coming :)
Brilliant go for it. Thanks for the kind comments. We are hoping to have another game soon 👍😀
I'm new to BP with a Prussian army arriving in the mail any day now. These battle reps are really, really good for beginners to understand how the game works. Keep up the good videos. Thanks.
Thays awesome, welcome to the joy of Napoleonics 😀 its by far one of my favourite games. I have the next report planned, will hopefully get some time soon to give it a go 👍
Viva La Haley!
👍😀
Good job really enjoyed this one, thanks Martin & Hayley
Glad you enjoyed it mate, i was sure i had it in the bag but those bloody men on the walls just wouldn't break 😅
I love Hayley being quite cheeky @ 34:20
Haha its not just there, she does like to twist the knife 😅
@@7thson726 I really love the battle reports. Please do continue the Napoleonics. 19th century warfare is my favorite period to game.
Great Battle, Really enjoyable video... also loving the emperor shirt!
Thanks very much 👍 got to love Emperor 🤘
Bravo! Battle of The Barn... A Jolly Good Table Top Game.
There were two British 9 lb Guns upon the road near the sand pit
I`m not a war-gamer myself I just love Napoleonic Figures.
All the Best Guys. Stay safe, stay well. BB
Cheers 👍😀 glad you enjoyed it
Didn't know about the 9lb's though I'm glad she didn't have those as well haha would have been even more brutal.
Those Guns are hardly ever mentioned.
ua-cam.com/video/d-0i3CPSZ7o/v-deo.html Some of my fun. Regards to the both of you. BB
Brilliant battle report, I really enjoyed this one along with your last. So nice to see your "Better Half" get the upper hand and win both games. Joking aside, it is so refreshing to see a woman taking part in a game and, looking like she enjoyed it. Nice work with the terrain and the figures.
Thanks very much, really pleased you enjoyed them 👍😀 she really did enjoy them which i think surprised her, she only agreed to the first one because i was grumbling about not having anyone to game currently, now she wants to keep going.
Nice battle report. More Black Powder battles please 👍🏻
Thanks very much 👍😀 got more planned
Fantastic Game, well done guys, great fun!!!
Nice one 👍😀 thanks very much
A fantastic game . Much enjoyed.
awesome, glad you enjoyed it mate, i enjoyed playing it depsite the loss haha 👍😀
Enjoying these bat reps. I love the casualty markers, really cool. The barn doors getting a saving throw feels a bit silly :D.
Cheers 👍 i love using the casualty markers especially when a unit takes loads in one turn. Yeah the scenario rules give it a save of 3+ unless the engineer attack it in which case its 5+. Think it's meant to represent the men on the otherside bracing it and the supports they put in the way 😀
Great game
Cheers mate 👍
New subscriber here...recently returned to historical gaming after too long distracted elsewhere. Love some of your painting guides and this was great fun too. Keep up the good work and thanks!
Thanks very much 👍😀 glad you like them, will have some new painting stuff soon as well
@@7thson726 Great! And looking forward to more batreps too. Tried to sell MY missus on the idea but her response was "Don't even think about it..."!
Love it. Great scenario
Cheers mate 👍 hope you're keeping well
Nice game. Very close scenario in the end but the right side won!
cheers mate 👍😀 The emperor will have his day soon 😂
This is a very fun looking game! Your videos convinced me to play it and to quite possibly make it a regular hobby. I've always been into strategy video games, but now I can convince my friends to play! Haha I do have to change some rules though cause I'm irked by breaking at the first movement roll haha
Sorry for the slow reply, unbelievably hectic week at work. Thays awesome to hear, im pleased its gotten you to give it a go 😁 the great thing about black powder is the author at the start comes staright out and says if you need to change something then do it, hence we don't use broken brigades for the level of games we play
What an Awesome game, it was a bit of a nail biter. I can’t believe how the allies held the farm for so long. Cheers 🍻
Glad you liked it 😃 yeah they held out well, to be fair the real life defence went similarly. It was those bloody ones on the walls that i couldnt shift! 😅
The way Hayley rolls break tests and dice in general I don't fancy your chances in any game! 😂
Its ridiculous!!! i was going to sit there and work out the odds but it got depressing haha 😂
I'm sure my luck will run out soon 🙈
26:15 look at the cat above the table
I don't even need to click on that to know exactly what the little exhibitionist is doing 👍
Is that an Emperor shirt? Nicely done...You should give Summoning a try. They're one of my fav.s
It is indeed 😀🤘, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is one of my favourite albums. Big fan of Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame is a brilliant album.
Was a great game even knowing the end result (saw the game for the bridge first) it was still very entertaining.
Ah i see haha 👍 well to be fair it was quite close 😉
Love you guys battle reports. It baffles me why there aren't more Black Powder reports. Did you have to modify anything in the rules to make your games small enough for home?
Hi there, thanks so much, really appreciate it 😁 we reduce movement to 9" for infantry and 15" for cavalry but we keep the weapon ranges the same, simply because we forgot once and it just seemed to work better than when we did reduce them 👍
Good fun,Which is what its all about :)
Thanks very much, we're certainly enjoying playing
Enjoyed watching. What size playing area did use for this game?
thanks very much thats great to hear 👍
this one was played on a 6 x 4
28mm? Looks like you bases many of the miniatures single. Why not in groups of 2x2 or 3x2? What size table do you play on? Love the cat @ 26:00
Yeah 28mm, there are alot of skirmishers in this game, to be fair the majority of my Napoleonic miniatures are bases 3x2 on 60mm x 40mm bases. I base Skirmishers on single bases though. I tend to play on 6x4, 7x4.5 (which is the largest i can manage at home) and 8x6 👍
Change of plan . You play the British next time. Charge her with the Scots Grey's. Could be a small Waterloo. You need a win m8.
Not a bad plan 👍 I feel responsible for the French now, think it would drive me crazy if we switch sides and she won with the French 😂
Nice touch on the use of actual musket balls to rep low ammo.
Does the cat ever jump on the table and interfere with the game? Mine do.
Haha cheers, thought they would do well 👍nah he tends to avoid the table, think the fields put him off
Wonderful game! So close to the real thing. Only difference is that Hayley does even better than Major von Baring and the 2nd KGL Light!!!!!!!!! Respect! You play like a real gentleman. Keep rolling 6s. Happy gaming!
Really glad you enjoyed that 👍 its a great scenario, i really thought i had it but i just couldn't shift those ones on the walls near the gate 😀
loving the battle reports man. have you tried sharpes practice or Grand Armee?
Thanks very much, glad you like them. I actually haven't, have you? would you recommend them
@@7thson726 I haven't but heard good things. Sharps practice is for skirmish games and seems to have some cool rules for lending narratives to individual soldiers and commanders. General d'Armee* is for brigade level games and uses Aid de Camps (need a commander model per brigade for this) to issue commands to brigades. Both seem neat but haven't heard that many opinions from those that have those games and black powder to compare.
Awesome game. Maybe you need to pick a different game? Maybe Guess Who? Lol.
Always love a game when it becomes cinematic.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. it definitley started to get desperate at the end haha
I think your onto somehting there though if i loose that where do i go haha 😀
A few questions as I replay this, what was the rating for the French command? French lights were only 2 companies? Any other special rules for company of engineers? they hit gates on plus one.. any other rules? you force the French to be in March column?
You say "company's" so they fire with 2 dice, but only fight with 2 ? (is this because defending a building). any other victory points for terrain pieces like the Sand Pit? the Hanoverian reinforcements.. were they thrown for? or was this a rouse? what were they going to be? Is it a rifle company? or companies!
No Problem, will try my best to answer all of them;
French Command was 8
French forces were 6 line battalions (2 classed as elites) 1 unit of skirmishers and the engineers
the engineers just have a shoot of 1 and are Brave and Elite 4+. When attacking the main gate they need 3+ to hit and the gate saves on 4+. When anyone other than them attacks the gate they hit it on 5+ and it saves on 2+
i chosse to out the french in march column but on the road there is a bank opposite the farm so the unit wouldnt be able to foem an attack coloumn as its an obstacle
regarding the fighting, thats correct.
victory points are; House 3, Kitchen Garden 3, Barn 2, Gate 4, Stables 1, Barricade 1. none for any other features. everyting else is worked out on shaken or destroyed units.
The hanoverian's arrive once the French capture a building, i just didn't bring them in as she didnt need help and the game was nearly over so didn't see the point. it was just 3 line battalions
game is meant to last 8/12 turns, but we ended it after 6.
i hope this is helpful 👍
@@7thson726 Awesome... well done! Finally what size were the engineers, French light and 95 rifles?
@@saunter1965 no problem, the engineers were tiny (6 models), French Skirmishers were small (12 models) and the 95th were tiny as well 👍
Great game and vids. 🙂. You may not be using this rule so apologies, but do shaken units in close combat draws take a test?
Thanks very much 👍😀 glad you enjoyed it. Yes units that are shaken and draw in close comabt should take a break test, did i miss one haha?
7th Son yep love the size of games as well. Not to daunting getting into this period 🙂
@@hamsteronthepaintingtable6465 the buildings conferred different morale bonuses depending on what part of the farm the unit was in, thats why the ones on the wall were always passing morale saves on 2+.
Id just play whatever size suits you best, its totally playable with just a couple of Brigades of say 3 battalions each and some artillery 👍😀 i have enough to build 6/7 brigades a side, hopefully once lockdown is iver i can do a report with all of them on a large table 😁
Thanks for explaining, yep that would be great to see 😊
Nice what scale are you playing with?
Cheers mate 👍 this is all 28mm
do you know the name of the film that there is a snippet from in the video, thanks.
Sure dude its "Waterloo" from 1970 👍 great film
@@7thson726 thanks, love your videos. i'm just starting black powder, and you help a ton.
Interesting game. How can skirmish troops be disordered? That rule makes no sense, I can understand a column or large body of men being disordered...But light skirmish troops that occupy a building?
Totally get what you say. I think it also represents say an nco or junior officer getting put out of action, or general confusion in the unit, hesitant trooos maybe, not just issues with the ranks 👍 they get bonuses to there morale saves while in the buildings
Greetings again I enjoyed your video but if I may say you need to slow down your editing as we your viewers can’t read the dice to see what was rolled. Also maybe slow down and describe the rules or make a rules video explaining various rules like building a army ( not painting) Command, movement, firing etc. I’m going to subscribe after posting this. PS what’s your cats name ? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for your feedback. I'm trying to get the hang of the editing, this is just the 3rd report i've done so learning new things each time, have alrady made a note to linger on the dice a bit more 👍
With the rules videos, i did think about this however there are already some great instructional vids out there like this one ua-cam.com/video/LhcjedxFqFk/v-deo.html its part of a whole series Pancake did and they are excellent. they are based on the 1st edition rules but not a great deal changed between the two books in the core mechanics.
Thanks for the sub, thats awesome. im going to be doing another game soon. Cats called Ted, i've started counting how many times he drifts through the house as we play 😀
Ted stole the show when he stopped in frail and started licking him self.
How did you make the very pretty
Long grass field
Fur right?
Hi, yeah its teddy bear fur thats been combed through a few times and brushed with various yellows and greens and then combed again, it certainly does the trick 👍
@@7thson726 ok il try that I have a late painted la haye sainte set just no other terrain
Oh its looks like mount and blade napoleonic war map, didin't it ?
Spot on, bit more trapped in this one haha
sharpe
Stuck in the sandpit with the rest of the 95th 😂
Bastard's 🤣
I wish in your battle reports you would show the order rolls.
To include them would increase the video length by at least another 30 mins and thats just the rolls without showing the movement. This seemed the best way to keep the momentum going in the video 👍
@@7thson726 I respect that answer.
I could do with a bird like that, to come and play soldiers with me, 😂
All you need to do is stay with them 14 years, have a lockdown and have them take pity on you.... Then they beat you at the game as well 😅
i have had 7 games v the mrs since xmas (20) and lost all 7 ......due to my very poor dice rolls ....thats what i tell her anyway
Haha I feel your pain 😁👍
