didn't watch the video but probably with microphones
Thanks
Underrated comment 😂
You are a very smart guy
This is funny 😄...the description should have been...what was the process of recording how to pimp a butterfly 🦋.
Nope, telepathy! Should have watched.
damn those recordings passed through a lot of super rare and expensive gear. best of the best
most pop music does.
@@articlepaper wrong. 85% of grammys were made with Burl Audio (high end) and while maybe produced with plugins are 100% mixed in professional studios on consoles and use outboard fx and dynamics.
@@articlepaper ok bud. well done. who cares.
yall hilarious
@@mollyoko i care.
TPAB is one of the best listening experiences in popular music period led alone just in hip hop. I put it in my top 5 all time albums list. Just throw on some high quality headphones and you'll see why this gear was utilized so well
Very true.
I still listen to this album at least once a week
The fact he knows "Bitch I'm in the Club" which Kendrick confirmed is his worst song really shows the dedication he had as a producer and his ability to know what works and what doesn't for an artist
I like that it's been only 8 years abd the record is already spoken of like it's a classic, like it's Giant Steps by Coltrane.
Wow I just looked up his age, 33 years old. He was 24, 25 when he did TPAB? insane
It's about what you knew and who you know... From what I recall he did some recording and mixing for someone who blew up. That's how he made his name and that's how a lot of other people make their name. A little bit of luck and working with the right talent.
He was 28 when he did it and 35 now. Im the same age as him lol
@@RealHomeRecording he been mixing for kendrick since section 80
@@superproducer247 nice
@@superproducer247 Since the Kendrick Lamar EP actually. Been there in house for Top Dawg since the name change.
Tracking digital sounds through analog gear THEN mixing, will get you a lot closer to a finished and full sound. I've learned that over the years of mixing hybrid, re-recording stems and vocals through outboard gear (with great converters) makes for less work in the long run. Great video!
Well how else would you do it? I'm not aware of a digital microphone
Wtf is a digital sound...audio is audio and you have a subjective method
@@miahdona8161 -- Digital sound is audio created by software instruments. The reason for this explanation is to distinguish between the two (hardware .and software synths/instruments)
@@americanantagon1st a synth is a synth. Im not sure if there is a meaningful difference between the two
@@dmetriusmarch -- To many, the hardware synths sound better. The plugins may be convenient, but doesn't sound quite the same. To know is to experience. If all you know is software instruments and mixing on a computer, you will never know.
I was in audio school when TPAB came out and my instructor, who used to work with Dre, heard it, the first thing he said was "Aw man that SSL goodness!" I was like "How tf did you know that??" and he said "I used to record there, duh!" Lol. I used to prefer the Neve sound over SSL because I trained on an old 4000E while the Neve I trained on was a VR70 that used to belong to Lucasfilm and was used to mix Jurassic Park. Once I tried the 9000 series I was sold, though.
This was sick, thanks man
you can tell a lot of work was put into this video. awesome video!
When this showed up in my recommended I thought it was going to be just another video essay that contributes nothing new to the conversation and uses Kendrick's name for easy views. Well, I'm glad I still watched it because turns out I was totally wrong. Really good work collecting and piecing together all these clips from various interviews and streams, most of which I had never seen, and making a cool and interesting video out of it.
favorite video of yours bro I've never seen those studio photos
kepp uploading those videos brooooo!!!
Man this was dope🔥 My man bought the machine that propelled his career...THat's a solid smart move.
well made video. lots of compiled research thank you!
This is a gem.
crazy information thanks for the vid :)
THE GEAR IS FUCKING INSANE, best of the best of the best
Yesss... this album will be talked about forever! 💯
Fr
bro's video is 8:08 mins as well lol dope stuff man !!
This channel is a hidden gem.
Man, there is a NAMM 2016 footage in collaboration with UAD, i tried to record that live when mixedbyali show the mix from these walls, but i never could catch the schedule and lost the oportunity to record it. I have some footage of post malone engenier and lizzo in the NAMM. But never could find the live again. Maybe some guy record it and still keep the video, so anyway im triying to find that live video, indeed the video with fab dupont its the same session they show in the live stream. Best regards.
,
sick, clean cut and very interesting, the video ended and I wanted to see more.
Where do u find all this shit 😂 insane, good stuff
TPAB is also my fav butterfly too
clicked only because of the thumbnail arrow! elite placement 💯
I know know why it sounds so glued together. I’m sure Views by Drake had similar effect chains. S/O to Ali for not letting the ego to him and realising he doesn’t know something and asking for advice on how to mixing live instruments. Kudos to him man. An idol of him for sho’.
Wow crazy
Dope video, subbed
could you make a kendrick lamar mixing preset, or just a video to his mixing in the box
"You'r not still doing that mono shit are you" Dave Pensado😂
Must need a Mike Bozzi Mastering video
So basically he used the best top world class outboard REAL equipment in the world with the best players, session guys, and rapper in the industry as well as mixers, mastering- If you can't get a Grammy doing that, get out....
The music industry people are the ones who run the Grammys and they have favorites. They aren’t really thinking about the better album. TPAB was never going to win when Taylor Swift was also nominated
@@nochannelmusician769 lmaooooooooooo
@@nochannelmusician769 you are white, who cares!!!!
The whole album felt like a spike lee movie so, totally makes sense he was inspired by Mo better Blues.
What did Dave Pensado mean by getting the bass to sit right by using the line trim? What is the advantage of doing that?
Line trim on the ssl drives the signal to the board which can create some clipping/ distortion when over which in a way compressed the bass causing it to perhaps sit better. That what I think he is talking about
@@georgetmusic Thanks George, that's awesome!

I like this fool
He used a mic 🎤

This aint free, has incredible mixing on it, ali did his dam thing
if im not doing it on this level im not doing it at all
Who is the elderly guy/engineer
Pensado
I wonder how the mic had been "modified" I've never really heard of a modified mic
mic mods are pretty common in the top studios. They have been modding consoles and gear since the 50s. It means they add higher end circuitry to make the gear more better..
Shit looks like it belongs to nasa
Makes a breakdown essay - can’t control the VO plosives and room sound
🙀
I feel like this album is underrated because when ever I talk about Kendrick to most people the only thing they know is GKMC and a bit of DAMN
it's true.. sad to see
Because that’s his most accessible, more popular albums.
@@Wavy-fs4mryea because it focuses on society more than his personal life , tbh I think TPAB his is best produce album , the music in the album is absolutely flawless 💯
Why you talking so fast? Damn
Do they really need all of that sh*t 2 get a great sound?
you dont need allat yo get a decent sound but for an album like tpab you have to go for the best. were not talking about a soundcloud mixtape here
@@samylemzaoui2298 I understand a lot went in2 that lp with live instruments. I’m a fan of all of the musicians who participated in making that lp but it just seems like so much. I figured a room with great acoustics would get u a great sound no matter what ur recording, the process would be the same. I’m certain that, like all things, experience does play it’s part though.
@@3MUnique nah the quality of your gear definetly affects the sound. for a retro sounding album like tpab you want that analog warmth on the mix and that is easier to archieve when you're literally using the same gear they were using back then
808 MINUTES LONG ..... HAHAHA
Just remember y’all!!!! Macklemore won a Grammy over pimp a butterfly. 😂.
I'm not sure why people give the Grammys any weight at all when it comes to hip hop. The president of my audio school is on the Grammy voting committee and he freely admitted during our orientation that most of the members just ask someone they know "Who's hot right now?" and then vote for them. It's a joke that people take this seriously just like the ROFF. Complete sham.
He actually won it over GKMC
why is head look so big in the thumbnail 🤣 Man said Goldeneye DK Mode Activated
idk i didnt do anything to the image tho
lol who?
