It is something to do gradually and build up to. I walk to and from my office every day (Mon-Fri) and it is 5 miles each way and across country with big hills as I live in a national park. Total is around 22,000 steps per day. However, even though I have been doing this for a number of years there are times when it hurts. I advise to sit for a few minutes during the walk after walking for a while to allow your knees to recover. Also eat some protein during the walk. That's to avoid damaging your knees. Once damaged they never go back. That isn't to discourage you, just do it the right way and you'll be fine.

Hey well done of the 20k steps in 30 days. All I'll say about the shoes is go a size up because your feet will swell. It won't solve everything, but does help!
Thank you! And woah, that's a great tip! 😀 I had not thought of that! Maybe that's what happened to my feet, and I had NO idea. haha. Hope you're well, and have a wonderful week. Thank you for watching my video and leaving the helpful tip here 😍
I aim for 1 hour walks of around 6km, not too long but great exercise. I am also listening to a couple of language study lessons during the walk which forces me to study it, where I often procrastinate if I was to have to study at home.
Hi Andy - I love this! That's a great effort and also double-benefit (you've inspired me to try learning a little bit of language now too whilst walking!). Thank you for watching and sharing your experience 🙂 Wishing you many good walks!
I've been watching a lot of these walking challenge videos, and this is the FIRST one I've seen that mentions blisters in any way at all, which surprises me. How are all these people suddenly putting tons of miles on their feet, and apparently suffering no ill effects, even if they haven't really walked much before? I'm also suffering from blisters, and I've been trying a rack of things to get it to Just. Stop. Already. Not perfect, but getting there. I had new shoes, exact same model as my older ones that had worked really well for me (but before I started walking much, they were just daily shoes). I was getting hot spots, so I taped, or used moleskin, and used gel toe sleeves. I also used the heel-lock lacing. That all worked a bit, but not enough. I got double-layer socks. This has helped the most - my left foot is now blister-free and very happy. But my right foot isn't having it, for some reason, even using it all together. The heel still slips enough to create blisters in multiple places. I picked up some Engo blister patches. These seem like they *ought* to work, but I'm still getting irritation, and all after just 15-20 minutes of walking, it's crazy! I have one last gun in the arsenal - I have some Armaskin socks on order, they have an inner gel lining that's supposed to stop blisters in their tracks. If those don't work - I guess it's off to the running store to get properly fitted for new shoes. And if *that* doesn't work...well, I guess I'll give up and just stick to the elliptical, where I don't wear shoes at all. Stupid feet. 🤕
Hi and thank you for watching and leaving such a helpful comment too! 😃You're definitely not alone in the foot challenges - I had ppl privately reach out to me with the same blister/feet size/shoe issues and got some great tips! One thing I learned is that nobody's feet are identical - often one foot is larger than the other, which explains why one foot can feel squished and get damaged more than the other foot! Secondly, I started learning of "foot shaped shoes" - this was a game changer! Currently I'm testing Altra brand shoes and they're great so far, made like duck feet with a wide toe box, just like how my feet are! Foot coffins are no fun, and finding the right shape and space to spread the feet naturally is ideal. I hope the Armaskin socks work well for you - I will now check these out too, haha! Some days I just want to walk bare feet and give up on shoes and just put a sticky sole on my feet for minimal protection HA. I hope you're able to find shoes that fit, as it could be that! Wishing you the best in finding the foot relief for outside adventures 😊 Thanks again for watching - much appreciated!
I've never had a fitbit or smartwatch or any way to count my steps. I do a specific route in my large neighborhood so I simply got in my car and drove it and let the car tell me how many miles it was. It ended up being just over 5 miles which is about 10,000 steps. If I have time and want more I'll just add in extra on my route. I don't intend on spending a lot of money for a fitness/step watch - I think its a waste for me since I do the same route daily. I rather put that money towards walking/running shoes! 😁
Thank you for your comment 😊 - I enjoyed reading of how you count steps - that is a great way of using what you already have as a marker! Oooh yes, I agree with you - a good pair of shoes is so important! Recently I discovered foot-shaped shoes, and they are changing (releasing?) my feet back to their natural broad non-squished shape and I cannot go back now. If feet could cry 'freedom!', that would be it. HAA! Thank you for watching and hope you have a fantastic weekend! Keep well 😍

Back in Nov I was walking 30K steps. But I found I slept too much afterwards. So I now walk, on average 5 or more days a week between 20k & 26k a day. 😊😅😂❤
Oh wow Christine - 30K?! I would be sleeping too - possibily in between steps 😅 But srsly, your stepcount numbers are great! I have a feeling the 20K+ should be normal, but with our jobs now 8+hours a day sitting, it's messing up the normal 😂

@GemmaAdventures and I forgot to mention I got a Gym Membership Jan 14 & do weight/strength train 3 days a week. I've lost a 1/2 inch off my waist. And honestly I always don't feel like going to the Gym to Weight/Strength train. But I do. And afterwards I feel sooo good. It's worth it. They have a HydroMassage Bed. I go on 10 min b4 walking. Then walk 15-1/2hr. Then 10 min Hydro Massage. Then 45-1 hrs train. Then HydroMassage 10 min again. The Hydro Massage is a real game changer. It's a good incentive for me & keeps me going to the Gym. HydroMassage helps destress, remove toxins in the body, relaxes muscles & so much more. I never have muscle aches or pains from working out. I've lost fat (visceral) & gained muscle. But I must make sure I get enough protein. I'm ovo vegan, so that's abit of a challenge, but doable. If I eat meat I get tired & sluggish. Being vegan gives me way more energy. Thanks for your reply. I hope life treats you well. Hopefully I'll watch another of your videos & we can chat. Until then. Goodbye. Hope life treats you kindly.
Congratulations Gemma, your persistence was rewarded.Maybe check that your shoes are fitting you properly as that should not happen.Your feet deserve a treat,a relaxing foot bath , a few drops of your favourite essential oils ,warm water in a basin or bath ,soak (something like lavender to soothe & to refresh peppermint).if you are pregnant be very careful using essential oils, check it first also if taking medication check it also. If you don't have any epsom salts in warm water is also relaxing.& reflexology which you can do yourself.I use a pedometer.Thankyou for the walk around the Botanic gardens it looks beautiful. The black swans & babies so cute. Enjoy your day 😍
Ahhh thank you! What a really helpful comment with great tips! I will definitely do the foot bath, and many scrubs HA! 😅 You're right, I think my shoes are often not a good fit - I have big feet (size 11, and wide feet, like duck flippers HA!), so I often have to buy men's shoes. Maybe I should wear those bare-foot style ones? Thank you for joining me virtually on the walks! Hope your weeks has been a wonderful one. Thank you for watching, and you have a great day too! 😍

I have done 20,000 steps for 7 days now, solely on a walking pad. I don’t wear any devices, so I walked 5 miles at 4 mph, twice a day. I don’t like the increased washing, but I want to boost weight loss. The inside of the left foot hurts, but not when walking. I love the walking. After the 30 days I may walk a smaller walk in the morning, but still do 5 miles in the evening. My appetite has decreased along with my sweet tooth. That alone is motivation to keep going.

@@AussieGem thank you. Yes, I thought it interesting that I have not wanted any sort of ice cream. Even my daughter will ask if I want a lick of hers, and it sounds so gross to me. Hi Melody! I wear any shoes that fit wide/bigger feet, so New Balance is good for a wider toe fit, Asics gel used to be my go-to for years, some Under Armour brand shoes were light on the feet (which is great for walking!), and currently I am testing Altra shoes (feet-shaped shoes ie. not squish toes into a point like most shoes), and these have been great so far (although they are on the expensive side)! 🙂 Hope you're able to find shoes that fit your feet well - it's definitely an individual fit situation and it can unfortunately take a few pairs to figure it out! Happy walking adventures to you! Thank you for watching 😍

You looked different at the end! Crazy! 30 days 🎉
Thanks for watching Ello ello! 😃 Haha gotta love a good mini transformation! Hope you're well, and have a fantastic week ahead there! 😍
Keep well 😍
Why not get a pedometer? Less than $10 at walmart.
@@WintermelonChanpedometer? thats what its called? 😂😭
Your cell phone may count them for free
30 Step Challenge for the March of Dimes!!!! 4miles before the gym, 4miles after the gym. 3am start time!!!!! My motivation, I found out a mailman was in the challenge!!!! That didn’t make sense to me!!!! He walks all day for a living!!!!!? I got up for the challenge and won!!!! One good thing came out of the challenge. I started running 🏃♂️ which cuts a lot of time vs walking
Woah that's awesome! Big congrats Willie! 😀 Mailman motivation HA I love it - and now you're running! This is such a fantastic story to read - thank you for leaving your comment, it's inspiring and also fascinating to learn how we all get motivated in unique, often surprising ways! Wishing you continued joy in your health and wellness adventures 😍 - have a fantastic week!
Back in Nov I was walking 30K steps. But I found I slept too much afterwards. So I now walk, on average 5 or more days a week between 20k & 26k a day. 😊😅😂❤
I got myself a weighted vest also. In the summer I will also be riding my bike.😊
Oh wow Christine - 30K?! I would be sleeping too - possibily in between steps 😅 But srsly, your stepcount numbers are great! I have a feeling the 20K+ should be normal, but with our jobs now 8+hours a day sitting, it's messing up the normal 😂
Epic stuff! Go you! The weighted vest idea sounds really good - I think the 'rucking' movement is happening and the benefits are starting to be noticed - I hope you enjoy the process! 😍 You're inspiring me to find weight for walking. haha. Thank you for watching! Hope you have an amazing week 😊
My wife and I set walking challenges like 80k steps in 7 days and 60k steps over a 3 day long weekend to motivate ourselves to get out and plan places to walk.
Great memories of Sydney. Thanks for sharing. It's a good story of walking as well. I do 10,000 per day, so I understand the time pressure. 10,000 is good. Enjoy your life. From a fellow content creator!
That is awesome! Thank you for watching John 😀 Great to see a fellow Aussie on YT! 10K steps a day is fantastic, and it feels quite do-able. That 20K was next level HA. Hope you're well and have a wonderful week!
Did that video have a results evaluation or perceived results ?
Hi Gemma,ah yes a great hold on the earth for both of us.I will send you info,i hope you don't mind.
I laughed when you popped in Andrew huberman hahahaha
hahaha ahhh you caught that bit! 😅 I love a good bit of mind-bend info. Thanks Shea for leaving all your fun comments! 🥰 I appreciate you being here!

im just completing my 10k-13k challenge for 30 days, will now do 20k for 7 days, difficult due to work but holiday season calls for it!
Nice work Sleepy Ranger! 😃 That's no small feat (or feet? haha). Thank you for watching and hope you have an awesome week and many great experiences on the step adventures! 😊
I did the 20k challenge…..what I did was JumpRope my first 10k….then walked off the rest. Yes! Feet did hurt in the beginning. Got good zzzz too 👍
Thanks for watching Yabba Dabba Doo! Haaa I'm hearing you on the 'sleep well' bit 😅 That's a great way to mix things up with jump rope! I hadn't thought of that! Thank you for sharing here. Hope you have an awesome week ahead 😊
You too 👍 @@AussieGem
I am 152 kg , and I walk 20000 steps everyday , it’s quite hard for me
Oh wow that is amazing! 🙌20K is a great effort 😊Thank you for watching Horus - I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. I feel inspired by you to walk 20K again now!
Is it roughly about 14km a day nice going😊
I might have missed it but how much weight did you lose in 30 days?
Hi Michael - no, you didn't miss anything! I did not weigh myself at all during this experiment (in hindsight, that would've been a great idea! 😅). Thank you for watching - hope you're well 😊
why was this so fun to watch 😂
Thank you for watching Renegar! So happy you enjoyed 😀 Have a great weekend and keep well! 😊
im doing 15k a day...i found 20k too hard time wise
Hello car lover! Wow, that is a great effort - 15K might be a sweet spot for health and time factors - you've inspired me to try this myself! Hope you're well and you have a great weekend ahead 🙂
@@AussieGem legs are achy today 15k isnt easy but hopefully rewarding in the end its definately not easy, back to it tommorrow morning hope the rain stops here in london
6:57 hello fellow doggy 🤗🐕
Ahh you spotted the little cutie! Always brightens the day 😍 Thank you for watching! 🙏😊
Thank you for watching and sharing your walking experience so far! 😊Wow, the appetite and sweet tooth decrease is so interesting, plus that's so aweome! You're doing really great - I'm excited for your progress. I hope the rest of your walking experiment goes well - it's definitely a great benchmark to know what feels good & what to tweak for future walks. Thanks again for sharing and have an awesome week ahead 😍
@@AussieGem thank you. Yes, I thought it interesting that I have not wanted any sort of ice cream. Even my daughter will ask if I want a lick of hers, and it sounds so gross to me. I enjoy an ice cream here and there. I still eat chocolate, but want far less. I love berries with sugar on them, because they don’t have as much flavor as they once did. I am only 165lb and would rather be 125lb. Just enough to have some work to do. I hope work and Australia are treating you well.
Nice job 👍🏻 New subscriber from beautiful San Diego Ca 🇺🇸 I walk about 20,000 a day ✊ but I take a day off every few days
Thank you John for watching and leaving your kind comment! Welcome 😊 I think you have the right idea with taking a regular day off - glad to hear your solid effort on the 20K steps! Keep well and hope you have a fantastic week 😍
@@AussieGem Thank you 🙏
great and funny video!
Thanks! 😃 Thank you for watching Kristina and sharing your comment! Hope you're well and have an awesome week ahead! 😊
what brand of shoes do you wear I cant seem to find good walking shoes?
@@AussieGemtry Hoka! Great for wide, big feet 😂👍 I love mine. I used to wear new balance
@@eb8589 Thank you E B! 😀That's super helpful - I'll definitely look into this brand! Yay! We need a foot revolution HAHA
20,000 steps is roughly 2h walk
Depends on how fast a person walks I suspect - according to Heart Research Institute of Australia, the average person walks 100steps per minute, "So in order for someone to reach the 10,000 step goal, they would need to walk between four and five miles a day (around two hours of activity)." - a fun read of the full article here: www.hri.org.au/health/your-health/lifestyle/do-we-really-need-to-walk-10-000-steps-a-day#:~:text=It's%20suggested%20the%20average%20person,around%20two%20hours%20of%20activity).
Happy walking! 😀
@@AussieGem yeah I saw yours was way different than mine after I posted.
Maybe I’m off by a wee bit. I was going by memory.
What's the app do you use? My (stepsApp) is so bad it's doesn't count around 6000step of my steps😭
Hi T-J 😊 I used the free iPhone app called 'Fitness' which came with the phone. Hope that works for you! Thank you for watching, and hope you have an awesome week 😃
Hi I just subscribed to your channel. I liked this video. I've been trying to walk 100 minutes a day, trying to get to 20K per day also.
Hello and thank you for subscribing - welcome! 😍 Amazing effort on walking around 100minutes a day! All this walking, our future selves will surely benefit too. 20K is definitely 'next level' especially with our modern jobs of 8+ hours of sitting HA, but we can do it! 🙌 I would love to hear if you hit the 20K and how it went 🙂 Hope you keep well and have a great weekend!
I heard ancient humans did around 17k per day
Woahhhh that's a good wakeup call for our modern sedentary work life! HA! Thanks for sharing Shea 😀
Did you bring snacks and water with you?
Hahah always! 😅 Thanks for watching Dani! Hope you're well 😍
@@AussieGem I was curious because I had about died trying to walk a week or two ago. Getting hotter here in this Arizona desert!
Wow, that is next level though! Desert weather walking, I'd be carrying one of those drink-tube backpacks. haha😂
Why not get a pedometer?
Less than $10 at walmart.
Great idea! Much cheaper than all the fancy gadgets too! Thank you for suggesting - that is on my list for next time now. HA! Thank you for watching and leaving your comment - hope you have a fantastic week! 😍
